Nathan Owens, at almost 40 years of age and single, has taken every opportunity to be trained in survival. In addition to those skills, he is an ER nurse and a reserve sheriff’s deputy. And, it is taking all of that combined to get him home alive. During his trek across the country, he has managed to become responsible for several children. Teaching them as many survival skills as he can, they constantly fight off those that would kill them or worse and try to avoid being found by government troops rounding up citizens into FEMA camps.
Watson’s second novel in the Dark Titan Journey series, Wilderness Travel, chronicles the day-to-day activities of Nathan and his group as they walk across the country. It’s a constant battle to stay alive. And, the good guys don’t always win.
The first book in this series made me mad. This book made me cry. It takes a talented author to bring out my emotions. Watson’s writing skills really do bloom here. This story while harsh and gritty also has some tender moments. And, that makes it feel more real.
This author puts a lot of detail in his books and It’s mostly well written but there are more editorial mistakes In this book than his others. Still not bad, just mostly random words where they shouldn’t be. I like the storyline, It’s interesting but If you’re looking for a more realistic view of prepping or catastrophe, this isn’t the book for you. The main character is a little over the top. Hes a preppier, nurse AND he’s on a SWAT team. He knows how to do everything and is really good at it. The whole time I was reading I kept thinking his character was what men fantasize themselves to be. Especially when all females even under the age of ten, fell in love with him and a nineteen year old keeps getting naked in front of him. Then at the end of the book I read about the author and turns out he is a nurse.....All in all- Makes me roll my eyes at times, very unrealistic but well written and I’ll probably read the rest of the series. Oh and a pet peeve was the main character saying “fixing to” all the time. He’s from the mid-west. It’s not something “northerners” would say a lot of any. FYI- NEVER give a dog a chicken bone. They tend to splinter and get caught in their throat.
After Nathan left the truck stop he wound up adding two young teenagers to his travel plans. A young girl, Amanda was on her own and Nathan’s protective nature took over. Later, a young boy named John who had been following Nathan and Amanda was invited to join them if the boy worked out. This story is a study in people, some that are helpful and self-sufficient, others that are selfish and cruel. As is the case in the majority of this type of tale it is the people that are the main focus, not the event or the journey itself. While traveling through another town a young woman named Jasmine asked to join them and after a brief discussion was added to Nathan’s growing tribe. Some of the stories of survival and/or rescue were quite sad and emotional; others were quite funny and enjoyable. It’s tragic shame that people can lower themselves to such base desires. In the face of chaos and adversity, in a time when strength and compassion are needed, some choose to take advantage of the situation to do harm. At times the author makes you think and wonder how you would react in similar circumstances. What type of person would you be? The difference between this book and the first is like night and day. I liked the story very much, the characters are wonderful, and the writing is excellent. I almost have to go back to look if the author is the same. The narrator has been changed so I’m sure that makes a difference in presentation, but such a difference? There is a third book, which I look forward to getting to see how this tale turns out. If you were on the fence due to the first book, pull the trigger on this one, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
I really enjoy this series! Fast, fun, engaging...just a good read!
Book two in the series has been just as entertaining as the first. The main character has increased his supporting cast of young people to try to get to safety. Some of the dialogue is a little cringe when he talks to the children or his awkwardness around women or distinct men... it just feels dialogue is off. However dialogue during action, or plot sequencing from one scene to the next is enjoyable and makes logical sense. I guess it's just hard to believe the main character as being so awkward, it's just overboard. That said it doesn't ruin the story and it's really enjoyable about a what if scenario that's spooky and makes you think what would happen if you were in that situation. I'm going to continue to read the stories as they're really enjoyable quick, fast-paced action and it leaves me wanting to know what's going to happen next. Book 2 gives you some insight to the world building plot of what's happening to the United States with this massive CME event. Definitely recommend!
Thomas A. Watson is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. The tale continues as Nathan leads his little pack of kids across the country, trying to get back home to Idaho before things get too bad to travel. The dynamic of having a bunch of kids, a hot 19 year-old, and a couple dogs makes for an interesting story. As this part of the series nears its end, the country and wider situation as a whole begin to take more shape. Nathan learns that the federal government is working to clamp down control over the populace, using UN troops to help. Meanwhile, National Guard units, as well as standard military, are fighting back, attempting to protect the Constitution and the people they swore their oaths to. And, all the while, little two-year-old Emma is being what all 2-yr-olds do, being a little stinker, and refusing to work with anyone other than Nathan himself. Makes for an even tougher ride through the land of death and desperate people.
I put off reading this series for a long time...Why? No idea....But now I can't put it down. This Author makes you fall in love with the characters while also opening your eyes to a very possible reality.... There is no boredom or delay in this series...It grabs you immediately...and you are just along for the ride as the scene is changing constantly and the characters are slowly tugging at your heart.....
They are actually journeying this time, though Nathan continues to play Santa on occasion. Still some grammar and word usage errors but not too distracting. This reminds me a bit of the Outlaw Josey Wales where the main character is going somewhere and keeps accumulating people who want/need to travel with him.
Thomas Watson's books are always a good read . While I didn't find this quite as wonderful as the Blue Plague series, it still gave great pleasure. When reading Watson's books you see your dads, brothers, sons. You laugh out loud. You cry a bit. You are never disappointed.
Just wow! The first book was really, but this one was amazing, it was fast paced and action packed, and the plot twists were just mind boggling, it kept me on the edge of my seat, and I finished it in one sitting. I really like Nathan, he's sassy and kicks a$$, I can't wait to see what he's got next in his bag of tricks.
I love how fleshed the characters are. I not reading this series to learn survival tips. I am enjoying the growth of the story. I don't really care about guns but I do like how Nathan teaches the kids how to survive. If you are looking for a preppper tips this may not work for you. However, the story line is great!
I love the storyline. Not too much gore or graphic sexual abuse. Well done. Your books are priced too low. Raise your prices but fix the selling and grammatical errors. I found at least ten in each book. It is distracting. I wish a few more survival tips and techniques were woven into the storyline but it reads well as is.
This was the first one I read because I got the book at a store and didn't realize it was a series. I was very happy to find out that it is. So now I have all 4 on here and this one as a paperback as well.
An amazing series that I can't stop.reading! Outstanding storyline with characters you feel you're walking beside every step of the way. Getting book three now
A different “end of America” book & series; realistic with some license, but really well written & a good story, believable characters, good survival information.
These books are an easy read, very enjoyable the way the lead character goes from a total hard man to a little bit of a softhearted guy who would still protect his charges at all cost. The younger characters are just as I would have imagined if this actually happened, and I just love little Emma. Please read these books and enjoy them.
Nathan has begun the journey back home to his friends in Idaho. He has company with him on his way....and the numbers will only grow. What was once thought of as a solitary sojourn, will anything but...
More challenges, more lessons, and more danger make this second book as thrilling as the first! An outstanding tale that just leaves the reader either cheering for the characters, or trying to read faster out of worry for them. Very entertaining and I look forward to the third book in this 'Dark Titan' series. Well done!
Nathan and his dog Ares are still trying to make it home to the mountains of Idaho. He is now the guardian of six new wards and a new German Shepherd puppy. None over the age of 19 and the youngest being a toddler, that loves her "Nafeen" The government has made their evil plans known. Nathan's only wish is to get his young wards to some sort of safety.
This is the best 'end of the world' story I've read. The story line makes sense as do the often brutal tactics. I especially liked the author including kids into the story as there will be a lot of orphans around. This story is more than a journey, it's a family being built from hardship and need.
Great entertainment. I loved Ares, Amanda, Nathan, Jasmine, John. I loved the travel, how real it felt like it could be. I was entertained, which is why I read. This also made me think. Having a chronic illness I don't plan on living through this, but it will be similar to this book. I just wish there was a Nathan around to save me.
Very exciting. Maybe not too realistic, but I like the authors style. The protagonist is almost too smart, strong and has had too much access to military weapons and ammunition.
I so enjoyed these two books, and was very disappointed that they ended. Now, when is the next one? The characters become so real. The personalities rock. I noticed a few spelling errors, but nothing that took away for the story. Love this author.
The story line stayed interesting but not exciting. Traveling cross country is never fun but I enjoyed the interplay between the different characters. Needs a proof reader.
