Book 2 of The Blue Cases, Heteronomy, is every bit as interesting and satisfying as the first! We meet up with our favorite lesbian law officer Gale Blue as she and her partner catch the case of a human trafficking operation. This is an intriguing and captivating story that draws you in from the first page and doesn’t let go until the very end. It feels very much like watching your favorite crime drama! The author did a fantastic job researching police procedures, criminal laws, crime scene detection methods, and that really comes through in the details of this book. It’s very informative and really holds your interest (and will probably prompt you to look up your local laws!). Of course, in the midst of the intense investigation, we are privy to Gale’s demons, and her various ways of coping and dealing with them, which adds another layer to the captivating storyline. I highly recommend reading Underwater, the first book in the series to really get the full experience of the second, and to fully understand Gale because she is such a complex and fascinating character.
Please do read the trigger warnings, as there are many and violence against women is rampant throughout this book. Gale Blue is the heroine we all need, and the strong female characters in this book really make the story.

This was a really interesting mystery and had me wondering what was going to happen next. I found it a bit slow to start, but really enjoyed it once it got going. It also took a little while for me to get to know the main character, Gale Blue, as I hadn’t read the first book in the series and there was quite a bit of referencing to what had happened previously. Although I haven’t read Underwater, it was refreshing to see the continuity of the character and how her experience in the previous story had affected her, not just brushing those experiences off as if they hadn’t happened. I definitely wish I could have seen more of Gale and Ruby and their relationship.
If you enjoy crime/mystery novels then I would definitely give this one a read, but make sure to take a look at the trigger warnings prior to reading it.

I’m a big fan of Geary’s writing style, and I really loved how this book was written. This is the second novel in *The Blue Cases* series, and I absolutely loved it.
I love the depth of Detective Gale Blue’s character, and I especially appreciated the realistic depiction of a lesbian female police officer navigating a recent but very culturally different time period. The story itself was thrilling and engaging and definitely kept me turning the pages, but what really made me love this book was the complex characters and the gritty, realistic feel.
Another fantastic addition to the series, and I’m definitely looking forward to more from Detective Gale Blue!

I really enjoyed this thrilling crime novel set in early 2000s LA! The protagonist, Detective Gale Blue, was wonderfully flawed but trying to heal from her low point in the previous book (also highly recommended). The central conflict was gripping and well paced with enough turns to keep me reading deep past my bedtime. The relationships between Gale and the other detectives and agents around her are well constructed and really help drive the story along.
While the book can be read and enjoyed on its own, it is a much richer story when paired with the first book, Underwater. I read this one first, when I received the ARC, and loved it so much I bought the first and read them together all through again.
I can't wait for book 3!

Not really for me
As a whole, this book didn't work for me. It had compelling aspects and characters, but the book was filled with too much filler (everything was described in detail) that didn't advance the plot. It could be a much shorter book and be much more fulfilling. It was a slog. I didn't feel like I really got into the main character's head. And the romance with Ruby almost seemed like it was stuffed in at the end. I liked the case. There was a bit too much gratuitous grossness.

First time reading this author, I found the book really engaging. Though this is the second book in the series I was able to jump in without feeling lost.
The main character is a struggling detective suffering from post traumatic stress disorder the characters it was approached by a teenager concerned about her elder sister. It swiftly turns into a sex trafficking case, but manages to avoid the common and overdone tropes.
The writing is good, if sometimes a little slow, the plot was engaging and the characters well written. I read it in a few days and will definitely check out the first book in the series.
Definitely recommend.
