Founders Ministries sent me a copy of “The Baptist Standards: Our Catechisms, Confessions, and Creeds” in exchange for an honest review.
For a long time now, I have been on a quest to find the best collections of confessions for each tradition. I’ve looked at a few Baptist collections and I’ve never quite been satisfied. Until now. I think with the publication of this book my quest for the best collection of Baptist confessions is complete.
The design of the book is simple but nice. The color scheme is green and gold, and these all work well together. Under the dust jacket, it has a pillar impressed on the front cover. The book also features a ribbon bookmark. Overall, the aesthetics are really good. If I could change anything, I would add one more ribbon bookmark. The book is nearly 500 pages long and it would be nice to be able to have multiple places marked.
Regarding the content, this includes everything you could want from a Baptist collection and more. For starters, it includes the creeds (295-311). I would have liked them to be placed at the beginning of the book, but I’m just happy that they’re included at all. Then you have two confessions of faith and two catechisms. With the 1689 confession, you get two for one. It has the original and a modernized version in parallel, with the former on the right and the latter on the left. Both will be extremely helpful for Baptist churches. Finally, a word must be said of the appendices. They include several lesser-known Baptist confessions and one non-Baptist confession (the Savoy Declaration).
As I said, this is everything you could hope for in a book of Baptist confessions. This is an absolute must-own for any serious Baptist. Don’t miss out on this one!
