Homeruns #2

Curve Ball

Rate this book
Jason Klein’s living with the fallout from a decision he knew was the right one at the time. He never told anyone about the love of his life, which left him to mourn alone when he found out the man he gave his heart to had been killed in combat. Now, his heart has had time to heal, but he’s not sure he’s ready to let himself move on. Until he meets Cam Morgan…

Without a job lined up following graduation, Cam Morgan took his best friend up on his offer to move to Milwaukee and stay with him until he could get on his feet. The last thing he wanted to do the day after getting to town was go to a party filled with a bunch of jocks. Sure, they were “professional athletes” but Cam was convinced that bigger bank accounts didn’t make them any more accepting of people like him. He certainly didn’t expect to meet Jason, the Mavericks’ catcher who broke every stereotype he’d had.

What started out as one hot, sweaty night together quickly grows into something deeper. Jason welcomes Cam into his home and his life, but now he has to teach the younger man that it’s not a sign of weakness to let people help you.

Sloan Johnson

26 books836 followers
Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be.

I know, I know. I said I wouldn't try Sloan again, but my friends were all over this book so I gave it a try.

Bad idea. The editing was non-existent, which I could have gotten over had the story been decent but FUCK ME the cliches! Dude, I'm all for diversifying, making sure all types of gay men are represented. But every time I read this author's MF-disguised-as-MM I wonder if she'd ever actually spent time with a gay man that wasn't her hair dresser. I'm not dissing her, I'm just saying there's something inauthentic to her books.

I digress. Aside from that, all of the angst in this book fell flat. Like, NOTHING went beyond the surface. I don't get all the love for this book. But then I see, not much of that love comes from predominantly MM readers, so that's always a sign. Oh well. Definitely done done done with this author.

Things aren’t going well with me and my m/m picks right now. This one (deep sigh) irked me. From the moment Cam and (looks up name) Jason meet its love at first sight. Its instant relationship and instant drama from night one. Sure they had “demons” from their past but this book was so PG-13 with all of it that it just felt…dull. Also Cam….he was a cook, he was way into fashion and his appearance, he was domestic, a nurturer, he hated to be referred to as a twink but he knew that’s what all the athletic boys thought – can we say textbook stereotype (wait, thinks to self - gasp- & HE WAS A MF-ING BOTTOM, you've got to be kidding me)? Oh and he was totally down hanging with the other wives and girlfriends watching the cooking channel and whatever… he even hates beer preferring wine.

I’m 2.5-ing this. It just lacked something for me and having read this particular story over and over I’m going to round down on this because it’s been done better.

Basic book for basic bitches. Nothing special to see here folks.
Couldn't like either MC. One was a terrible friend and the other was a guy who for most of the book saw the relationship as an exchange of sex for food.
Third book in the series is tempting me with a MMM but I am going to skip it. After two books I have not been impressed by this author.

This was going better than the first one, but I stopped at 30% because one of the MCs isn't a baseball player and I got kinda bored because baseball is half the fun for me.

I know I'm wishy-washy. I hope everyone who reads this enjoys it!

Excellent sequel to Wild Pitch!!!

Wow I am so invested in this series. I loved Wild Pitch and couldn't wait to get my hands on the sequel Curve Ball! It didn't disappoint. All of my favorite characters are back and now we get Jason's story.

Another homerun in the Homerun series!!! Next up......Triple Play. Bring it.

Jason is a teammate of Sean's. He lost his only love and has been in morning for 7 years. He's never wanted to try another relationship. Never thought about coming out of the closet before, but all that changes as soon as he catches a glimpse of Cam. Cam is Drew's best friend. Cam ran far away from a terrible home life to attend culinary school. After graduating he accepts Drew's invitation to stay with him until he gets a job and gets on his feet. Jason and Cam meet at one of Mason and Sean's parties and it's instant chemistry.

I couldn't wait for this book. After book one, Wild Pitch, I sat on pins and needles waiting for it. Sloan didn't disappoint. This book was HOT, sweet, romantic and heart breaking at times. I loved the complexity of both characters and enjoyed watching them concur their past demons, to make their relationship work. They had good chemistry and they were both very likable characters.

I loved seeing Mason and Sean. Cam and Mason, a newly stay at home dad, their interactions with the other wives and girlfriends at the home games were hilarious. I loved Mason in book one and was glad to see the characters disposition and humor remained through book 2.

This author has become addictive and is one of my favorites. I am loving this series and can't wait to get to Eric and Drew's stories!

Second on the Homeruns series, Jason and Cam's book was a little bit better than Wild Pitch.
It was an ok book, nothing to call home about. The drama sounded too artificial in my opinion.
As in the first book, a lot of editing errors, but I found the story a little more engaging than the first one. We get to read about Mason and Sean (from the first book) and I liked them better here than in their own story.
I doubt I'll read any more books in this series though. None of the blurbs for the other 4 books call my attention.

4.5 SKILLED STARS!

'It's all skill, baby'

It really is! And this author has it. She has a way of bringing these different men's voices across and the reader (or at least for me) not getting lost. I absolutely ADORED this story! There's nothing earth shattering. There's no gimmicks. It's just a story of two men falling in love. And it is SWEET & SEXY. One a baseball player. And the other a culinary school graduate. It was oh so close to perfection for me!
The only thing keeping this from a full 5 stars from me is...... I'm a whore :// (seriously I'm rounding up to 5 coz there is action. I think I was just in a mood lol) I love a great M/M read and I usually go into it for, well I'm sure you can guess lol. But w/this author I've found I get more caught up w/just the every day lives of the men we are following. I want to be their friend.

Jason we knew from the first book coz he is part of the Mavericks ball team. Who doesn't like a hot baseball player? And then when I saw the cover? BT as Jason?! Ahh, let's just say my imagination had NO probs here ;))
Cam has come to town to stay w/his best friend from childhood, Drew, (Who is also on the Mavericks team) and to figure out what direction he wants to take after culinary school. I loved him from page one! He's really just the sweetest guy.

I loved that these characters, so far in this series, COMMUNICATE. That's not always the case. So it's refreshing for me to stumble on these type of reads from time to time.

I could never sum up how great I believe this series is turning out to be. IMO It really is that awesome of a series. I can't wait til this author catches on and more of you begin to experience it for yourselves. Speaking of, Sean & Mason? The MC's from the first book? Loved them both in this one also. But I especially enjoyed Mason! It was such a treat to have him buddied up w/Cam when their men had ball games <3

If you're looking for a GREAT 'new to you' author in the M/M genre. One who I think can and does hold up to the likes of say, Riley Hart? This series is worth checking out!! I don't think you'll be sorry :))

Happy reading <3

Oh!! And by the little bit I read of the next story coming in this series at the end of this book? I shall be stalking until we get Drew's story lol

This is the second book in the Homerun series and centres around the game of baseball with lots of passion and romance thrown in.

Jason Klein is still getting over the loss of his first love who was killed in combat. He has never stepped out of his self-imposed closet as with being in a tough male sport it was just easier, that is until he meets Cam and then he finds himself not really worrying about what anybody thinks. He wants this young sexy guy who just happens to be a great cook with a cute butt!

Cam Morgan is Drew’s best friend and taking him up on the invite to move to where he is just made sense. He needs to make new friends and sort his life out and what better way than to throw himself into the banter of a group of tough baseball players? But then he meets Jason at the team get together and he finds himself wanting so much more.

I liked the easy glide of this storyline, with less angst and for me that was a winner here. I was just in the mood for some hot m/m romance and that is what I got. I liked the character interaction and the camaraderie that just gelled the story for me. It also helped that I fell for Jason in the last book so was eager to see how his story panned out. I liked that Cam was a little different to the tough guys on the team and was more of a sweet loving guy. I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a twink although he did see himself as that at times and maybe others would too but he just had another kind of strength that drew me to him.

The chemistry was, as with the first book hot and steamy and there was also lots of laughs, though mainly provided by Mason (again!). I liked that Sean and Mason ‘s story also continues in this book but not to detract from Cam and Jason’s story.

This was a real feel good m/m romance that was light to read but intense to dive into. As I say not an overly angst ridden plot that I usually defer to in my m/m reads for some reason but here it gave me just what I was in the mood for.

So if you like your m/m romances to be easy going with a whole lot of fun loving and passion then Curve Ball is a definite must read. Four stars.

I was really disappointed in the characters in this book, both Cam and Jason. I was really looking forward to Jason's story also because he was such a rock to Sean with his relationship issues but he fell really short for me.
My problem with Jason was: 1) why would you go after a team mates friend when you knew he had feelings for
this particular person
2) You were more upset with not having someone to cook you breakfast
rather than Cam not being there in the first place.
3) totally ignoring Cam when the whole team was around

Cam was: 1) being a total CRAP friend to Drew/totally disregarding any of his feelings or just talking to him while he was sober plus not being there as a friend/person should be!
2) saying one thing and meaning another, how messed up is that?!?!!
3) you piss all over someone (Jason) when they are sticking up for you even though they may be outing themselves

Just too many things annoyed me with the one, good thing I read the 3rd book first otherwise I would have never read any more after this book. Sorry to say this one wasn't what I expected it to be. :-( Not even sure if I should go on from here reading the series. ( I did enjoy book 1 and 3 though)

Chau Drew, si te he visto, no me acuerdo.

Less baseball in this one and I like baseball in my baseball stories.

The dedication is worth repeating:

For everyone who's ever had a dream. Don't let anything or anyone take that away from you.

I liked that the women were not total one-dimensional bitches in this one. I could follow the POV changes much better than in the first book. There were also much less grammar/editing errors in this book.

I felt the emotions of the MCs' relationship more in the first book but I liked that one of the MCs in this was was not into baseball but also not a total ignoramus about the game. Although there were things I loved about Cam, I wanted to feel more emotion from him. I wanted to feel his need for love and his fear of ridicule. I wanted to feel the heat of his feelings for Jason. I felt Jason's emotions more than Cam's.

I could have been reading a MF story and that is not what I wanted. I wanted more masculine heat. It was nice that none of the guys were getting hassled by the majority of their team members, but it was not realistic.

I will still read the third one in series as I want to know what happens to the characters. Not my favorite but an entertaining short read.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Cam is out and proud and has taken care of himself for so long he struggles to let anyone close. Jason in the closet and tired of it. Neither of them want anything serious. We know what is going to happen when characters say that.

While Jason's first romance tells a tragic tale and Cam clearly had a difficult upbringing, Curve Ball is ultimate a good fluffy m/m romance. I enjoyed the relationship Cam developed with the WAGs and the constant talk of Cam's cooking and food had me wanting to eat. The steamy scenes are well done and the sneak peak the author provided of Triple Play, the next book in the series, left me wanting more.

I'm giving it three stars since I'm not sure if I liked it.

I liked Cam and Jason's first meeting. It was like I was the one taking with someone I want to know more about. It was the part I liked the most.

There was something lacking in the story. I can't pinpoint it bt I really there is something missing that could have made the story a bit better. I would have liked more elaboration on the back story of Cam, it seemed lacking to me. My heart broke for Jason for losing Adam. I can't even imagine the pain a person is going through losing someone they love.

I came so close marking it DNF but I wanted to make sure to leave myself a few notes so I wouldn't mistakenly pick this series up again.

Insta-love, misunderstandings, no communication, no chemistry, lackluster sex, bigger misunderstanding that didn't make sense, awkward dialog, tantrums that don't make sense, cliche and stereotypical and then on top of all that... what amounted to a bit of a cliff hanger. This managed to tick just about every negative button I have.

I loved this story. From Drew to Bev, the cook. All of the characters were genuine and loveable.

I did not feel that I needed to have read the first book in the series to know what was going on which was nice. From the beginning, I could tell that Drew was a wonderful friend to Cam.

Then there was Cam. While I did not quite understand his insecurities at first, you did get to read a lot about how he was feeling and the reasons why, which helped the reader feel closer to Cam. His character was well developed and even though I wanted to smack the back of his head at times for his stubbornness, I really loved him. His passion for life, the fact that he wears his heart out there for the world to see and the fact that he loves so completely.

Jason is just a hot, romantic stub. When I think of him squatting for the game... YUM! I loved how he was so lost, but not afraid to go after what he wanted - once he figured out what that was. I was relieved that he was able to find people outside of his life to help him see things for what they were/are/could be. He was just so wonderful to Cam - I loved that he encouraged and protected Cam, even if the gestures were sometimes overbearing.

These two were perfectly matched for each other and despite the bumps, when you got to read about their date, Holy smokes was that fun, romantic and just an all around awesome date.

My only hitch was that it definitely needs a good once over. There were a few places where the sentences didn't make sense and the wrong pronouns were used. As long as it goes back to the editor for those places, it will be a hit.

I really hope that next books are just as awesome and I can't wait for Drew and Eric's story.

OMG, I loved this book! I read the first book and loved it as well. Sloan Johnson just has a way of drawing you in and making you love these guys! Cam moves to Milwaukee after his friend Drew asks him too. Cam doesn’t have a job after graduating culinary school so he takes him up on his offer. Drew drags Cam to a party where he meets Jason. Jason is a fellow team mate of Drew and instantly is attracted to Cam. Problem is Jason hasn’t come out to anyone and no one knows about his past love and the heartache he has been through. I just love Cam and his attitude, he doesn’t care what people think and he will defend himself and not take crap from others. Jason has hidden for so long but he really likes Cam and they go home together and things get H.O.T. What was supposed to be just one night turns into something more. The more time they spend together the more they start to develop feelings for each other. There is a little angst and drama in the story but not too much, it all goes well with the story line. We get to see Sean and Mason from the first book and Eric too. I just love this series because I feel like I am right there in the moment and I feel everything that the characters feel and I get so upset when the book is over. I loved the game that Cam and Jason played as they went on their date “grab some pennies and if you flip tails we turn one way, heads we turn another”. I just loved these two and I hope we get to see them in the next book in the series. I also hope that Eric gets his own book since Drew is up next for a book.

Such a great story! I enjoyed it even more than Wild Pitch, loving both Jason and Cam. This time, only Jason is a ball player while Cam is a fledgeling chef. Flamboyant Cam struggles to find his place among the professional athletes while Jason struggles to out himself after years in a Major League closet.

The contrast between lifestyles and interests with Jason and Cam makes the story interesting. Cam’s relationships with the team wives and Mason, a newly retired stay-at- home dad, are fantastic. Cam’s food is drool-worthy even on paper!

We see more of the Mavericks team in this second book and I really enjoyed the interactions between the players as two more of the team outed themselves publically. The author refuses to add drama with unnecessary homophobia - her gay characters find themselves pleasantly surprised by the open minded support they receive from the majority of the team.

This is an easy, enjoyable romance - part of an addictive series. I’m really looking forward to Eric and Drew’s stories!

I liked this book more than I liked the first installment in this series. I really connected to both characters, not to mention their situations.

I did feel like we never really got the full story of what happened between Jason and his first love, we only got hints here and there, but never the full story.

We get to see the characters from the first book, which I always love, but they didn't play a big part so I'd say this was a standalone in the series.

While I really liked both men when they were together.... there was just something about Cam I didn't like. Whether it was his determination to do everything alone or the reason he sets himself up for heartbreak. I just didn't feel that part of the story. Like it was there just to create drama that wasn't really needed.

I will say the few naughty scenes in the book were HOT and I loved them, but then a lot of them were coasted over in a old school romance fashion, which I didn't particularly care for.

That being said, I still greatly look forward to Drew's story and see the man get his happy ever after.

Clearly, what I have learned about myself is that my favorite sports romances are when both people in the relationship are athletes. Otherwise it gets boring for me.

Sometime when you least expect it, you run into that one person who changes your life in ways you never thought would be possible. They give you a second chance to find what you never truly knew you were missing.

When Cameron Morgan agreed to move in with his best friend Drew, he was a bit unsure at first. Knowing that Drew was a professional baseball player, and having endured enough harassment from athletes, he was unsure what he was walking into. But, Drew was determined to involve him in the life that he was leading and refused to let anything happen to Cam. What he didn't expect was to find out about another teammate being gay.

Jason Klein has managed to keep his sexual preferences unknown to almost all of his teammates other than a select few. When her arrives at a cookout and spots Cam getting a dish out of his teammates car he is taken back by the handsome man. Knowing immediately that Cam was gay he could not seem to walk away from him. The only problem is that Cam is still stand offish because of his past and because he doesn't want to cause any problems for his best friend Drew.

Jason finds every chance he can to approach Cam and to find out more from him. When he offers what seems to be a no strings attached hook up, it sounds good to Cam who is trying to convince himself that he doesn't want or need a relationship, just as Jason is doing the same thing. Both men having ghost's holding onto them from the past and neither wanting to open up keeps the other at arms length.

As much as I loved Wild Pitch, I think this one may have just help me captive even more. To see the desperation, fear, and desire that Cam and Jason have, just would not let me go. This book was one that luckily when I started reading it I just so happened to be off the following day because I could not put it down. I found myself still reading at four in the morning wanting to find out if the two would be able to find the happy ending that I so desperately wanted for them. I also loved the fact that we still got to have a part in keeping up with what was happening with Sean and Mason. Sloan Johnson is such a wonderful author who writes her books with such emotion and feeling that you find yourself reacting as if you were right there with in the book. I can not wait to get to read the next story that will show us what happens with Drew, and hopefully will also keep us moving along with our other beloved ball players.

Curveball by Sloan Johnson is a sweet and sexy story about looking beyond the surface to see what truly lies beneath. It is the second book in Sloan Johnson’s new Homeruns series following Wild Pitch, which was released in June.

Jason Klein has managed to keep secret who he is and who he’s lost. He knew it was the right decision when he made up his mind to keep his life private, but now he’s questioning if it’s time to let the past go and move on with his future.

For Cam Morgan, appearances can be deceiving. He craves for people to not judge him on his superficial persona.

On the outside Cam looks like the typical Twink, but on the inside he’s not that weak vulnerable boy who needs protection from the outside world anymore.

CAM IS DETERMINED TO MAKE IT ON HIS OWN AND NOT RELY ON ANYONE FOR HELP

Cam is determined to make it on his own and not rely on anyone for help. Now that he’s out of school and with no current job offers, he decides to take up on his best friend Drew’s invitation to move to Milwaukee where he plays on the Mavericks with Jason.

The last thing Cam wants to do is hang out with Drew’s jock teammates. Even though they’re “professional ball players,” that doesn’t mean that they will accept him for who he is. Despite his reluctance, Drew drags him along to a party where he meets Jason who blows all of his stereotypical thoughts of jocks out of the water and he finds himself falling for this man.

Cam is not Jason’s type but he is inexplicably drawn to the young man. What began as one night of passion leads to their lives intertwining as they become closer to each other than they ever have with anyone else.

But will Jason’s ghosts continue to haunt him and prevent him from moving forward with Cam, or will he finally find peace and be able to move forward? And will Cam be able to let down his guard and accept Jason’s love without sacrificing the strong person he has worked so hard to become?

After book 1, I was really looking forward to Jason's story, and Curveball did not disappoint!

After reading and enjoying Jason in book 1, I was eager to see who could help this hurt man to overcome his past loss, and learn to love again. Anytime I like a character from a previous book, I know it will take a lot from a new character to make me believe they are good enough for their guy, and Cam definitely did that!

I like Cam's complexities and his struggle to reconcile some of the experiences that he had at the hands of athletes with the feelings that he has for Jason. One of the things that I liked most about Jason, and one of the reasons that he was so right for Cam, was that his struggle is about overcoming loss. He is not a big, dumb, homophobic jock, and actually faces his coming out with a lot of reflection and thoughtfulness. He knows that this will be a big announcement to some of his teammates, but the people closest to him already know, and he without someone to love, it doesn't seem like its worth the fallout to him. I get the feeling that due to the earlier loss of a loved one, he doesn't want to address his sexuality because he has almost turned that whole part of himself off out of his hurt.

When he meets Cam, he faces coming out with grace and strength, and is challenged more by the fact that his heart is engaged in ways that it hasn't been for ages. I really enjoyed Cam's struggle to find himself in an environment that is so outside of his comfort zone. I also loved his friend, and Jason's teammate, Drew, and I admired the loyalty that he and Cam have for each other.

This was a great book, with a great romance. I am really loving this series, and I am looking forward to the rest! Don't miss Curveball (releasing on 7/29)!
