4.5 stars rounded up. The editing issues bugged me but I still enjoyed the story. Brandon is not an ogre with with Megan - that is for sure. I loved how he let her know her scars were nothing and her ex was a moron.

Despite the embarrassment of having wrestled a dog to the ground over a shoe, Brandon found himself dropping back onto the grass, husky laughter rumbling deep in his broad chest. “Damn dog,” he said in a forced grumble as he tried to collect himself. He dragged a hand down over his face, looking up as a shadow moved over him.
Megan knelt over him, humor lighting her eyes. Her lush pink lips parted to reveal perfectly aligned pearly whites. “There is no longer any doubt in my mind,” she said, laughing. “Superman has nothing on you.”

“Clearly, you’ve been misinformed. Mr. Barnes is not an ogre. Brandon’s actually a very kind and caring man.”
The woman snorted. “Then he has you fooled. The man is nothing short of cold and callous.”
“Maybe where you’re concerned,” Caitlin joined in. “But what man would be warm towards a woman who spreads easier than mayonnaise?”
The blonde gasped and then shot to her feet in a huff of indignation. “Well, I never!”
“That’s not what I’ve been told,” Caitlin muttered.

She looked up at him, tears shimmering in her eyes. “So you see. I’m nowhere near perfect. I never will be.”
“I’m not looking for perfection,” he said, lowering his head to brush his lips tenderly over hers.
“But you’re a man,” she said with a sniffle.
“The last time I checked,” he agreed with a slight grin, hoping to bring a smile back to her face. It worked.
“Brandon, I’m serious.”
“So am I, darlin’. I’m a man who wants you, scars and all.” She bit at her bottom lip. “But I’m willing to wait until you’re ready.”

He met her worried gaze, his own filled with tenderness. “Scars and all,” he reminded her, brushing his lips lightly over hers. “You don’t have to hide from me, Megan. Ever.” Nodding, she let her hands fall away. “Your trust humbles me,” he said in a husky whisper.

“Open your eyes, Megan.” She forced herself to do as he asked, but she couldn’t meet his gaze. Instead, she focused on his chest. “Look at me,” he said.
“I am.”
“My face,” he said with a soft chuckle. Gathering her nerve, she tipped her chin upward, meeting his gaze.
“You. Are. Beautiful,” he said, enunciating each and every word.
She smiled up at him, tears stinging the backs of her eyes.

“Forget his arm,” Brandon muttered, his gaze still locked with hers. “I’m going to break his mouth.”
“Brandon,” she admonished.
“I can’t help it,” he said. “I’m not about to stand around and do nothing when someone’s cheapening what I feel for you.”
“What you feel for me?” she stammered in surprise.
Then her heart lurched as he reached out to gently caress her cheek. “In case I haven’t made my feelings clear, I’m falling for you, Megan McKinney.”
She gasped. “You are?”
He smiled. A warm, wide smile. “Hard.”

“I’m not closing the blinds or my eyes, nor am I waiting for night to set in to make love to you, because that would mean I agree with your ex and I don’t. Truth is I like seeing the sunlight caress your bare skin. And I’ll be damned if I’m gonna allow some idiot who has no right to call himself a man make the woman I love feel like she needs to hide herself away in the shadows.”

I loved this book, after reading Kidnapped Cowboy a couple of years ago I have been waiting for this story. I loved Brandon's story, although in this book he appeared a lot more relaxed then in the first book although he was still very serious, I also thought Megan was lovely and both were really nice and very likeable characters. I wasn't sure what kind of story Brandon would get but I think this was pretty much perfect for him and I liked the small echo of the kidnapped part of the Kidnapped Cowboy ending where Brandon followed his brothers lead although no hog tying was done. This was a very sweet book and I can still remember a particular line "spreads easier then mayonnaise" which was so funny, the little bit of drama added to the story and the ending was just as sweet as the rest of the book.

I have to thank Lindsey Brookes the lovely author of this book because I emailed her after reading Kidnapped Cowboy asking about Brandon's story and she kept the email (after saying he would be getting a story) and let me know his story had been released almost 2 years after the original email, which was really nice.

This was a great read that had a wonderful cast of characters that left me with a smile. Although there is a lot going on in this book it was easy to get caught up in Brandon and Megan’s story so it read very fast.

Brandon is the epitome of “all work and no play”. He’s always been the responsible one and has put business first. And when he finds his fiancé cheating on him, well business not only comes first, but it is the only thing he wants to focus on. He’s definitely an alpha cowboy type, but he holds his emotions close to his vest and very rarely lets himself have any fun, which has earned him that nickname – the Ogre of Lone Tree.

Megan has been hurt – and she carries the scars both physically and emotionally from the car accident she was in and then the emotional fallout she suffered when her boyfriend walked away making some very nasty accusations. I just loved her strength and resolve to start her life over again, and also her resolve when it came to Brandon.

When fate lands Brandon and Megan together, they are exactly what the other needs. Megan sees the man under the “Ogre” façade, and Brandon accepts Megan exactly as she is, scars and all. Watching these two dance around their attraction was fun – especially seeing Brandon struggle to keep his focus on business because he’s too busy thinking about Megan! They certainly have some issues to work through, but when they finally give in to the attraction between them, you can feel the chemistry on the page.

I loved all the secondary characters in the book – especially Digger, the dog who showed up one day at Brandon’s ranch and decided to stay. It was also great to have Brandon’s brother Dalton and his fiancé Caitlin part of the story. They both have become an important part of Brandon’s life and for me it was because Brandon has seen what true love looks like through Dalton and Caitlin that he becomes open to the idea that maybe he could have that to. Megan’s brother Riley was also a great addition to the story, and I hope that he gets his own happy ever after!

The writing and the dialogue were well done, and the banter at times had me laughing out loud, especially the scene in the diner when Megan and Caitlin run in to Brandon’s ex-fiancé.
Turning, Megan locked eyes with an immaculately dressed blonde who appeared to be dining alone. The woman, not much older than she and Caitlin, looked her up and down with obvious disdain. “Clearly,” she told her, trying hard to contain her irritation at hearing the hurtful nickname Brandon had been giving, “you’ve been misinformed.

“That’s not what I’ve been told,” Caitlin muttered as she took Megan by the arm and led her to one of the booths at the other end of the diner.

All in all, this book had lots to love in it and wasn’t filled with lots of angst and heartache. There were some issues that needed to be worked through, but I loved that fact that the characters would address them head on to minimize the drama and keep the story moving. This is the second book in the series and can be read as a standalone (but Kidnapped Cowboy is also a great read, so check that one out too!). This would be a great addition to anyone’s TBR list!

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

After reading this I so want to read Kidnapped Cowboy I just know it will be a wonderful read as Captive Cowboy was. Do you believe in love at first sight? The characters in this book do not they are about to find out anything is possible when you least expect it. Brandon is a hard nut to crack with his gruff was he never even cracks a smile. When Megan see that smile for the first time she is determine to make it happen again, when she hears him laugh she makes up her mind to do everything in her power to make sure it happens again. These two have so much in common but still so opposite but opposite do attacked and the sparks flying off these two just goes to show you how true that statement is.

Megan has had a hard live growing up with a playboy father who ends up in jail, an ex that thinks the worse of her when really he never loved her. She decides to move on and start a new life what better place than with her brother. Along the way things happen to put her in a town she never heard of with a man that is over powering and very alpha who never cracks a smile and works too much. She sees a side of him that most do not or they would never call him the “Ogre of Lone Tree”. Megan is a wonderful character so full of life after going through so much she is still very strong not letting life get her down. She has a wonderful sense of humor which comes in handy when one must pull from enter strength. She doesn’t trust and will not trust another man she cannot afford to, no way no how will her heart be brought into this friendship.

Brandon has had a hard life growing up with a father that is controlling and not letting him or his brother be children. He had to grow up fast learning to deal with life and run a business. When you have money everyone is out to get it even the women you thought loved you. He had to learn the hard way to guard his heart and his money. When Megan falls into his lap needing his help there is just something about her that draws him in. When she starts to draw him out showing him another side to life he knows he must keep her at all cost. There are other that will get in their way of their happiness, will he believe in their love or what others tell him.

I enjoyed this read the author puts some fun loving characters that know how to live life and get the most out of it. I loved Brandon’s brother and girlfriend they were just to funny as they turn the tables on both Brandon and Megan. Megan’s brother is just a doll I hope he will get his own story someday. I love his protective ways with his sister how no one will hurt her and anyone who tries will get their butts kicked. His playful side is outstanding he was truly funny in so many ways.

The author gives a good plot with a well told story that keeps you interested. I did find my mind wondering a little the author always pulled me back. She gives some hot passionate scenes that will steam up your windows. I am looking forward to reading more from this author I am going to have to make sure I start with Kidnapped Cowboy that sure does look to me a humorous read.

Note: I received a complimentary copy for an honest review.

Megan is starting over. She's ready to move on with her life and try again. The pain from her past is weighing her down. What she doesn't plan on is getting lost in the middle of nowhere Montana.

Brandon is living up to his nickname, the Ogre of Lone Tree. He refuses to smile, laugh, or do anything social. He simply works and refuses to trust anyone.

However, events happen and paths cross. When these two broken people find each other, the healing that they find from the other is sweet and tender.

This is labeled as book 2 and although having read book 1 would have made some of the scenes more understandable, it was not necessary. I do, however, want to go back and read book 1 to help fill in some of the blanks because the same characters from book 1 are in this story. What I'm trying to say is that you don't have to read book 1 in order to read and appreciate this story.

If you enjoy reading about hurting people who find happiness and healing in life with each other, then you will definitely enjoy this book.

Romance - PG-13 - The reader is in the room, but it's not graphic.
Language - PG / PG-13 - mild cussing,

I wish I could comment on the grammar, but I think my copy was an early release because it didn't even have the cover art attached. So, the formatting was wonky, but readable.

My rating - 5 stars.

Megan McKinney finds herself stranded in Lone Tree, Montana when her car breaks down on her way to stay with her brother. The closest place is a ranch where she faints in front of the owner after she fell and hit her head.

She is rescued by its owner Brandon Barnes who takes her to the local doctor where she needed stitches from her fall since it bled. He lets her stay at his place to recover and until her car could be fixed.

Brandon is a bit reserved as he found his fiancée with another man as he learned not to trust anyone. He is considered to be an ogre by the town due to his ex.

Megan has her own problems and secrets. She was in a car accident months ago and is still recovering. Her boyfriend dumped her because of her scars and a father who is in jail due to forging checks from women he seduces for money.

Along the way, these two hurt people learn to fall in love again. But when her secrets are revealed, can these two move past it and take a chance on each again. A nice story that you never know when love strikes.

Super cute love story of love found. Megan just trying to get away from life finds herself in a small little town broke down. Finding a house with lights on she decides to get some help. Being thrown to the grown and ripped of her sandal she ends up at the local Ogre's house in Lone Tree. Brandon who is a workaholic and considered to be not that friendly takes Megan in and helps her out. The bantering between the two is great and comical. This story is like the saying you can't judge a book by it's cover. I think that is what Megan thought of the so called Ogre. A wonderful story that you wont be disappointed about.

Even if you have not yet read book one in this series, Kidnapped Cowboy, you will learn enough about Caitlin and Dalton's story here that you will want to grab it and catch up. This time, in Captive Cowboy, it is Brandon's turn to deal with at least one very stubborn woman. (Not spoiling your enjoyment here.)
At times he seems much more business man than cowboy, but hold onto your heart because he has all those qualities you love in your cowboy heroes.

It was a dark and stormy night when Megan literally drops into Brandon's front yard.
Digger instantly becomes one of my favorite characters in this book. That isn't easy, as all the people populating this story are so well developed. I even loved to hate the horrid ones.
Brandon and Megan are both struggling with emotional issues and bad past relationships. TRUST is a major roadblock.
I thought it was funny that as tough and independent as both Barnes men are, they fall to pieces when they feel women in their care are physically endangered. These guys NEED strong women in their lives.

From an unlikely beginning, a relationship of sorts and an uneasy trust develops. When you think things may be headed for a happy ending, a MAJOR twist and additional misunderstandings seem to thrust that goal away.
You will laugh and cry and smile and gasp while reading this wonderful love story.
It is about loving and trusting oneself as much as others.

I did receive a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I bought Kidnapped cowboy myself.

What a sweet story! This is the story about not knowing where a wrong turn in life can take you. Megan was trying to find a fresh start in her life but she never expected to find it broke down on the side of the road. Megan walks to Brandon’s house for help and finds so much more. Brandon is a loner because of past heartache and prefers to keep to himself. He does not trust easily but even he cannot deny the chemistry between himself and Megan. With a little humor and a little flirting the ogre of Lone Tree has finally met his match. This was such a delightful story that unfolded naturally and seemed so genuine. Both characters were strong minded and well written. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I adored this sweet and swoony western-themed romance!

CAPTIVE COWBOY by Lindsey Brooks follows the trials and tribulations of a beleaguered young woman, Megan McKinney, who ends up stranded in Lone Tree, Montana enroute to her new life in Casper. After her car breaks down in a storm and she injures herself she gets taken in by broody landowner Brandon Barnes when he finds her passed out on his property! What starts as a reluctant arrangement just long enough for Megan to recuperate from her concussion and get the parts needed to repair her car, blossoms into a tender hearted romance that catches them both off guard! But can this “mulish, unsmiling” bachelor and the emotionally insecure woman of his dreams overcome long buried hurts from their pasts and take the ULTIMATE risk on love?

This is my first book by Lindsey Brooks but most certainly won’t be my last. She has a vibrant and engaging writing style and a gift for writing character driven stories filled with heart, heat and humor! Although this is the second book in the CAPTURED HEARTS duet it can be read as a standalone. This whirlwind romance was chock full of timeless western charm, delightful banter, heart fluttery feels and sweet sensuality! I was swept up instantly into this touching romance and loved the themes of acceptance, second chances, healing past hurts and the bonds of friendship and family.

A gruff, grim-faced Brandon, unfairly dubbed the “Ogre of Lone Tree” has been avoiding emotional entanglements due to being burnt in the past and up till now work has been the driving force in his life. Until sweet, spirited Megan bursts into his world and makes him see all that he's been missing. But the sweet natured artist is skittish as well due to a tumultuous past and harbors feelings of inadequacy stemming from a difficult upbringing and a life altering accident that left her physically and emotionally scarred. But the strappingly handsome, chivalrous Brandon makes her feel beautiful, inside and out--flaws and all--and together they breathe life into each other worlds and discover that dreams can in fact come true!

There was plenty of angst, romance and drama throughout to keep me captivated and of course the story culminated with a sigh worthy HEA that gave me giddy feels! I also thoroughly enjoyed the delightful supporting characters, especially Brandon’s ornery brother Dalton and sassy fiancée Caitlin (featured in KIDNAPPED COWBOY), as well as Megan’s fiercely overprotective bro Riley. They were woven perfectly into the plotline and infused the book with wit, humor, warmth and buoyancy! (Oh and note to author…the ALPHALICIOUS Riley needs his own book pronto!! He was quite the scene stealer!)

This was an audio listen for me and OMG…what a DELICIOUS narration it was! This was not only my first book by Ms. Brooks but my first narration by the incredibly talented Kaleo Griffith and I wonder where the heck has he been all my life?! He was the PERFECT narrator for this book….His deep, husky western twang gave me goosebumps and he emotes so beautifully that he pulls you so effortlessly into the story! I adored his raspy depiction of the ruggedly sexy Brandon, and enjoyed the versatility of his voices too. He shifted seamlessly between the male and female narrations and not only did a great job with the dialogue but I also relished his delivery of the hero’s witty internal thoughts. This is a narrator I will definitely be auto buying in the future!

I was provided with review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily written this review.

I don't want this short little series to be over. Don't they have a long lost brother? Maybe? Heck, I'll even take a cousin. Or, Riley.

This is the second book by Lindsey Brookes that I have listened to and was another fun, entertaining and very enjoyable listen. Just as with the first book in the series this one is also well written, flows smoothly, has an engaging storyline, is full of humor, a little steamy romance and great characters all without too much angst and drama.

Technically you could listen to this book as a standalone but I would start with the first book in the series just for the pure enjoyment of it.

Once again the story has a great cast of characters. Both old and new. Even though Brandon has been branded " The Ogre of Lone Tree" he is an immediately likable character. That hard outer shell of his had cracks in it at the end of the first book. Megan is also immediately likable although it did take a bit more time (not long) to completely warm up to her. Riley was also likable with all his big brother overprotectiveness. Digger was a character in class all by himself and lovable from the start. I really enjoyed that Dalton and Caitlin were part of this story as well.

Brandon and Megan have both burned by people they trusted in the past. This makes them both very cautious and wary of relationships. Even though the attraction is there they are both a little skittish. They will both have to take a chance.

Kaleo Griffith does a great job with the narration once again. His voice just pull you into a story and makes it come to life. He has one of those voices that you can listen to for hours on end. His narration is clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Great character voices. Both male and female. Perfect tone and delivery of the humor. It's always a pleasure listening to a story he narrates.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily provided this review.

Can Megan change all work and no play? Brandon Barnes, a workaholic businessman stumbles on Megan McKinney unconscious in his yard. Now with a start like that, you know this book is going to be good! These two characters are so likeable, you want begin to root for them even before their first kiss. Both Megan and Brandon come together with their own set of baggage, that we get to know and hate. The question lies though, will they be able to sort through it all to find their happily ever after? Having Dalton and Kaitlyn in this book, as well as Megan's brother Riley gives the story a lot of home and good friends feeling. The relationships between Megan with Riley and Megan with Kaitlyn are key, almost feeling like Kaitlyn is the glue to the whole family with her no nonsense advice and help right from the first day! But my favorite character is Digger..that shoe stealing, hole digging dog is just show stopping and his relationship with Brandon was so heart warming.

Kaleo Griffith needs no praise, the man can read the phone book and make it sound sexy. He gives life to Brandon, letting you feel the compassion and passion as well as having a very good array of character voices for the rest of the cast. Very enjoyable listen.

I really enjoyed this book much better than Kidnapped Cowboy, because of it's set up or formatting. It was much easier to read. Yes it was predictable, but I was okay with that. I liked Megan and her quest to be independent. When it came time to move out she was willing to do it. She was honest with Brandon about that. I liked how Brandon was willing to open up even with it being out of his comfort zone. I read on Kindle Unlimited

Not as good

This was a nice story about a normal couple, but the first one was way better I kept getting bored as it just seemed like a story on repeat I'm really sorry Ms. Brookes. I did like your writing style and will try other books you've written.

One ogre I wouldn't mind meeting

Captive Cowboy book 2 in the Captured Hearts series was a First time read for me of a Lindsey Brookes title. Read out of series order didn't detract from the story. Yes, there were plenty of references to the first book in the series but I could easy follow the storyline without that 'missing the first 20 minutes of a movie' feel.

Stoic male protagonist had me rooting for him from the get-go. Female came with a tonne of baggage but I can happily say they get their HEA. Fade to black scenes, while not normally my thing, suited the title.

Easy to read writing style had this title read in one sitting. Was a good introduction to author that has tempted me to go back and read the first book in the series. Could just be my wishful thinking but I've got a feeling that if there is a book three, Riley's story might just be my favourite.

I've read both of the books in this series and really enjoyed them.

Captive Cowboy
All work and no play just like his father had done leaves Brandon Barnes, the 'Ogre of Lone Tree', on the outside looking in when it comes to those around him. A man whose trust has been broken, leaving his heart guarded.

Megan McKinney, determined to put her painful past behind her, ends up stranded in Lone Tree, Montana. Love is the last things she’s looking for, but she soon finds herself falling for the gruff, unsmiling cowboy who rescued her. Now it’s her turn to rescue Brandon – from himself. So she sets out to teach him that life is meant to be enjoyed, not just lived. And that sometimes true happiness is only a smile away.

I loved this book, maybe not as much as the first one, but it was hilarious.
In this book, we meet up with Brandon the hard ass we met in the first book, and he has met his match with Megan McKinney. She is the lone person that was able to make Brandon see that life doesn't have to be all work and no play.
I really enjoyed this book and loved the way that these two connected. The plot was hilarious and I really enjoyed watching Brandon learn to mix business with pleasure. Very good! 5/5 stars!

after reading Kidnapped Cowboy i didnt think this book would be as good, how wrong i was, this book was equally as good, following the other brothers story, finding love and turning him from a cold selfish business man to a loving and caring one.

Both Megan and Brandon had been hurt in their past and found trusting someone an issue, but slowly the barriers came down between them and they learned how to love and feel again.

looking forward to reading more from Lindsey x
