When winged paranormal Dante is injured in a demon attack, he faces certain death unless he can reach a healing spring just off the Pacific coast. With his strength waning and the demon poison infesting his system, the spring is his only hope. He never expects to find salvation in the arms of the property’s caretaker, a much younger man. Bren is fascinated by the beautiful winged man who arrives at his family’s sanctuary. He’s determined to save Dante’s life, but he’ll have to find a way to help Dante heal without infecting himself with the demonic poison, and time is running out.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2015 Daily Dose package "Never Too Late."
Set in a alternate reality full of paranormal creatures who have come out of the darkness, and a few shared events like 9/11, this is the story of Dante, mortally wounded by his enemies, and the much younger Bren, guardian of a healing spring Dante needs if he wants to survive. Like any well developed alternate world, this story is full of mystery, the discovery of rules and how things work, and on top of it there is a wonderful beginning of a love story that promises a bright future for Dante and Bren if they can make it work.
Dante is on a mission when he gets injured in a brutal attack that involves a deadly poison. His only hope is a remote healing spring, but it is guarded and he doesn’t know if he is welcome. Not that he has any choice, so he approaches and hopes for the best. What happens is better than anything he could have imagined or expected.
Bren is the guardian of said spring, although it slowly emerges that he isn’t supposed to be. Between him and his talking cat (all logically explained, eventually) they manage to maintain an open house for all paranormals needing help. When Bren finally discovers the mysterious flying creature he has been watching in his spring, he is fascinated. As it turns out, there is a lot more between them than either expected.
If you like to explore alternate worlds filled with interesting paranormal creatures, if two men who might have never met if not for the “bad guys” sound interesting, and if you’re looking for a mysterious read with a touch of darkness and a promise of romance, then you might like this short story.

When Dante’s injured, he heads to a healing spring to get rid of the poison infesting his system. Unfortunately, for it to work, he has to wait until sundown to enter the spring. While he’s waiting, the property’s caretaker, Bren, shows up to help but there’s not much he can do except keeping Dante company. The time spent together creates a spark between them that might just be worth something to explore later on but with the poison eating Dante’s body, will he even survive long enough for that time to come?
This story had a lot of potential but I found it to be a little too dense for me to really get into it. I enjoyed the characters and really liked what there was of the story. I found the connection between Dante and Bren a little hard to believe because there wasn’t much depth but I definitely loved the way the story ended, it was definitely cute. However, this would have been a great story if it were only longer with much more detail and depth to it. As it was, I felt like a majority of it was internal dialogue and a bit of world building but not as much dialogue as I would have preferred.
In the end, I liked the story but I couldn’t get into it because of how short it was. I felt like the story was much too complicated to be this short but I did enjoy the characters. I hope the author considers expanding the story and I really hope we get a sequel for Pix!
I love the whole supernatural world and especially one where its blended with the world we know. I had high hopes for this book, but it fell a little short.
There’s not a lot I can say without giving away the whole plot, but what I can say is this. The premise is amazing and the writing is wonderful. The characters are interesting and compelling. It wasn’t hard to become invested in not only Dante and Bren, but in Bren’s brother’s fate as well. The idea of a magical place of healing that’s completely neutral ground for all paranormals is fascinating. The stories that could be spun from it could be epic.
The problem with this story is that the author tried to put too much into too few pages. We barely have enough time to get attached to Bren and Dante before we are flung toward the end. I understand that the stories are supposed to be short to be part of the anthology, but this would have benefitted greatly from expanding it and letting us see more of the world that the author built for us to get lost in.
I would have loved a little more angst…a little more anticipation so that when the happy ending came, it could really be appreciated. As it is, it feels like a really long summary….or like the Cliff’s Notes version or something.
So, in the end, it’s a great idea, a beautiful world, interesting characters and good writing. But in this case, all those positives end up highlighting the fact that I felt totally cheated by the rush through this potentially great story.

I was really excited to read this story because the blurb sounded fantastic. A bit of Urban Fantasy with winged creatures? Yes, please. There’s something about wings that gets me. And while the idea is great, it’s just too much for a short story, and it felt incredibly rushed from nearly the beginning.
The author builds an interesting world where a variety of creatures coexist with humans. Alexa Silver even connects the attacks of 9/11 into the story, which made it even more intriguing. The human world wasn’t the only world that lost people in the aftermath.
Bren is the son of the caretakers of a hot spring that heals paranormal creatures. He is in charge while his parents are away, even though he shouldn’t have the job to begin with. There’s an interesting bit of backstory in there involving his recklessly amorous twin brother and a witch. When Dante ends up at the springs after a demon attack, Bren is immediately drawn to him. And by immediately, I mean in a matter of minutes they are moving insanely fast. There is no real build up in their relationship, and then suddenly they’re mates, and Bren is part paranormal and… what?
It moved so fast my head spun.
I was also confused by the paranormal creatures mentioned in this story. I wanted to know more about them, but there’s little explanation. Again, I know it’s meant to be short, but it’s just too much of a new world in a thirty-four page story. Were this expanded about two hundred pages and over a longer period of time, I would be thrilled. But, as it stands, it just didn’t make the cut for me.
Bren Harrold was on a mission to get a photograph of the dragon who has been flying near his family’s healing waters. But when Dante actually does appear again, Bren is too busy helping heal the wounded and poisoned shifter.
I was graciously provided an advance copy to read and review. I absolutely loved this story. There was so much contained within the pages. It seemed to be a much larger story than what the page count would indicate, in a good way. I had to savor the words and the universe Silver created. Everything flowed so well and I loved how the author dealt with the various types of paras. Honestly, I got tingles as I read it. That doesn’t happen often. This will be a great series, so much scope to explore. I wish there was something higher than a 5 out of 5 in my rating system, the story was that good.
Okay, so I’m hooked on this Paranormal universe Alexa Silver has created and I want more, so much more. I want more Bren and Dante and more Pix – yes, must have more Pix. Please tell me Pix will get his own story, maybe novel length? (Hint, hint) Though I also happen to like him in the form he is now. But I also hope the author builds a longer story about the creatures that inhabit this particular universe. I want to know more about Dante’s kind and all about the political groups that were mentioned.
Oh yeah, and who wants to read all about LifeFlight and mating en flight? *holds up hand* ME ME ME!
In two words: I’m hooked.
Gimme more! :)
5 stars.

I very much enjoyed this book. The world building definitely makes me want read more and more (and more) books set there. Highly interesting to me. I NEED to know what happens next! Other reviewers already get into the This and That of Bren and Dante's story so I won't repeat everything. The story ends on what feels to me more like a HFN than a HEA which is not my preference. But then again, there isn't enough room in a short story for everything, is there?
Dante and Bren make such a lovely mismatched couple. And yet so right for each other. Alexa introduces us to their world in this story and it's such a tantalizing glimpse. I want to know more about the Demon Wars, prequel perhaps? I hope we get more stories with Dante and Bren, too. Will there be repercussions because of their relationship (I caught hints of potential political problems). Surely she's going to break Pix's curse, too. A delightful read.
prety fun read we have an talking cat pix that used to be an human got cursed till he finds his true love and his brother bren .
So the story goes like this Dante im assuming his an dragon injured in a fight. Bren who heals him in a spring water so is bren not human too oh i wish i sould understand how creatures work well i do but you know somtimes need to know what they are. But beside that the characters were fun.
