Welcome back to Tippermere for the wedding of the year…
Scatty but loveable Lottie Brinkley is famous throughout the village for her disorganised personality so when she steps up to plan the perfect wedding the only likely outcome is disaster.
When her globetrotting, love cheat of an ex, Todd, literally crashes the wedding on a not-so-noble steed, things definitely look set to take a turn for the scandalous. As rumours of why he’s back spread through the village quicker than the stable girl can drop her knickers, is Lottie's future with sexy eventer Rory Steel about to fall at the next fence?
With a wave of unexpected pregnancies, steamy shenanigans in the hay and a farrier with more than shoeing horses on his mind, will Lottie ever be ready to take on the coveted title of Lady of the Manor and restore the Estate to its former glory?
As the heart of the village, Tipping House Estate, makes its move into the 21st Century, pulses start to race in a novel packed full of charm, hunky stallions (the guys that is), and a daring plan that just has to succeed…
Zara Stoneley is the USA Today bestselling author of The Wedding Date.
Born in a small village in the UK, she wanted to be a female James Herriot, a spy, or an author when she grew up. After many (many) years, and many different jobs, her dream of writing a bestseller came true.
She writes about friendship, dreams, love, and happy ever afters, and hopes that her tales make you laugh a lot, cry a little, and occasionally say 'ahhh'.
Zara now lives in a Cheshire village with her family, a lively cockapoo called Harry, and a very bossy (and slightly evil) cat called Saffron.
Zara’s bestselling novels include 'The Wedding Date', 'The Holiday Swap', 'Summer with the Country Village Vet', 'Blackberry Picking at Jasmine Cottage' and the popular Tippermere series - 'Stable Mates', 'Country Affairs' and 'Country Rivals'.
Country Affairs is the second book set in Tippermere, Cheshire. Readers need to be aware that this is bubbling with sexual potential and edges just off the boil of a bonk buster style book. So if you choose to read this don't be shocked to find hot sexy men and women who lust after them.
However this book is much more than that. The Stanthorpe's are aristocracy, running equestrian centres and have the full stately home with leaking roof, gurgling water pipes and moth eaten carpets behind them. They live side-by-side with the rich and famous of the celebrity world who live in Kitterley Heath, to whom money is no object.
Lady Stanthorpe has decided it's time to hand over the debt and the running of Tipping House Estate to her lovable but scatty grand-daughter. Lottie must come up with a money making plan to appease the bank manager and repair the roof. Lady Stanthorpe or Elizabeth to family and friends, is a wily old Lady who manipulates people whilst swigging her G&T. Always with an ulterior motive up her sleeve she is one of my favourite characters.
Poor Lottie is stretched between her love of Tipping House and her love for the sexy Rory and their relationship is put under intense strain when plans to launch Tipping House as a wedding venue get under way. With the help of Sam, Pip and Amanda the storyline romps through a wedding with an impromptu horse jump off, a celebrity charity cricket match, horse mishaps, ex boyfriends and girlfriends and the final celebrity wedding venue showcase.
I loved the continuation of the characters and the storyline from the first book "Stable Mates" and enjoyed the more humorous storyline and a move away from the Jilly Cooper style of the first book showing Zara's own writing ability.
It’s no secret... I already love Tippermere. In fact I fell in love with it when I read a series of taster blog posts, and now, two books on, I love it so much I’d like to go and live there. I first visited with Stable Mates, but I needn’t have, as Country Affairs is a stand alone novel, which works just as well as a first taste of this picturesque setting, which Zara Stonely has created so perfectly. Tippermere is based on Zara's home turf of North Cheshire – the cosy pubs, stable yards, beautiful rural backdrops, country houses, and lovely villages are wonderfully drawn, and the colourful characters and their escapades kept me smiling right through. The horsey side is similarly authentic, and the details are satisfyingly spot on.
The fab thing about Zara’s writing is that from the start it's immediately obvious you are in great hands. This story had an awesome beginning, and sets off at a pace, with a fab multi generational cast list, of hot guys, interesting women, dogs, horses, and oh, did I mention hot guys? Pick up Country Affairs, and you’ll be plunged into a break neck country romp, but alongside the rip roaring fun, it’s fab to find poignant, deeper moments too. But be warned, once you start, if you’re anything like me, you won’t want to put it down. Delicious, naughty, fabulous, hilarious. I loved Stable Mates, but I love Country Affairs even more, and I can’t wait to read the next episode. It's official, I heart Tippermere.
Highly entertaining with lots of twists and turns! I was pleasantly surprised by the ending as I was expecting a different turn of events. There are plenty of sexy men from fun loving Rory to intriguing Irish Mick, as well as loyal friends. Lottie's grandmother Elizabeth is the glue that holds them all together - she meddles in everyone's business, but it seems she is always right. If you read the first book, you will enjoy catching up with previous couples and as well as getting to know possible new ones. While Lottie got her HEA, there are still quite a few happy endings needed for her friends. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next installment!
"Country Affairs" is the second book in the series about Tippermere and it can be read as a stand - alone novel, but I'd highly recommend to read "Stable Mates" first - even if only for fun! You know, when reading I could really feel that I'm starting to panic that it's not going to end like I'd like it to end. I mean, Mick is OK, although I don't belong to his groupies as much as I belong to these of Rory's, and when I've read only about Mick being there for Lottie, and Rory behaving like the last prick, the most spoiled child, I really started to feel very unsure. Yes, I am wholeheartedly Team Rory and I couldn't believe what I've seen - Rory behaving like prima donna, like a real diva, and disappointing Lottie so much. And the author kept me in this suspense till the end of the book!
I am not sure what happened to Lottie? This sunshine, this lovely girl, who was a little scatty and giddy suddenly changed into a very disorganised and forgetting everything person - a little too much for my liking. I could ask, just like Rory did, what happened to this lovely, funny girl that he loved so much? Yes, I do realise Lottie must have had to grow up, mature and started to feel the pressure of responsibility, and it was absolutely OK, but through the most of the book she just seemed so subdued and not so full of life and mischief as she used to be. Having said this, I didn't stop to adore Lottie, oh no, and I still would love to have her among my best friends. Lottie is now being trained as a Lady of the Manor and she really did live up to this challenge. She knew what's more important now and even though she was afraid it's going to spoil her relationship with Rory, she still focused more on growing the funds to help the house, hoping that Rory will eventually come to his senses. Rory, oh man, I could shake him more than once, really! Lottie is of course surrounded by her friends who we know already and are really fond of, and who are so willing to help her to save the house. Apart of Pip, Sam and Amanda, as well as accompanying them male characters, there is also a very unexpected appearance of Lottie's ex, Todd, who has just stolen the show during Amanda and Billy's wedding - wow, to be once at such wedding and then I can say I've seen it all :) And all of them have their own, so significant role, in the book - it wouldn't be the same story without them all.
I know that most of the readers are enchanted by Lady Elizabeth, but I'm not too keen on her. There is interfering and there is interfering, and Elizabeth took this interfering much too high for my liking. That nothing can happen in Tippermere without her knowing about this I can gulp and understand, but playing a good fairy - godmother and meddling with relationships is already too much for me.
So yes, the characters stayed just the same: loving their gossip, meddling, stirring, but also incredibly helpful and you could see they like each other and they feel great in their own company. The overwhelming sense of community in this book is one of the best thing that could happen to me. I love reading about such small communities working with each other and helping each other, and even though those people know about you more than you do, it is still so adoring, and whatever they set their minds on, let it be a wedding, an auction, a cricket match, they just pull it off.
I truly adored this book but I can't shake off the feeling that it could be a little shorter. Almost the whole novel was devoted to developing an idea how to keep Tipping House in the family, and as much as I liked some of the brainstormings, I was waiting for more action, to see some of the ideas by myself, and maybe to also see how they were then created into reality.
As I only lately read "Stable Mates", there was too much of flashbacks and explaining the situation, but I'm sure if I'd read it right after it was published, I'd appreciate the fact that Zara wanted to keep us all up - to - date with everything that happened and has impact and influence on the present, more.
"Country Affairs" is truly a delightful read, full of this what girls like most: horses, dogs, brilliant setting, likeable characters and hot men. Same as the "Stable Mates", also it is incredibly funny read, full of warmth, happiness and this bubbly feeling of optimism and sunshine, and what's more, with a real depth to it. Zara Stoneley has written a book that was not at all predictable and kept you guessing till the very end, made the life of characters complicated, and also made the readers laughing out loud at all the antics and one - liners, but also added some much more gentle scenes. So yes, this novel has it all - again! Zara has this incredible talent to write characters that you want to keep close to your heart, and to throw you direct to the heart of the story. I really didn't want to leave Tippermere and Lottie and I am so hoping for the next book in the series! And - could somebody tell me the way to Tippermere???
I adored the first book in the Tippermere series, Stable Mates, and so I jumped at the chance to read and review the sequel - I couldn't wait to find out what happened to the characters next! I wasn't disappointed! This series has a wonderful cast of characters, both human and animal, and they are just so much fun to read! As a country girl myself I can completely relate to Lottie - right down to the mismatched socks and untamed hair - it's all part of country living!
Unfortunately in my village I don't have quite the same options as Lottie when it comes to men. I'm quite picky when it comes to book boyfriends, so to find myself in love with not just one but TWO gorgeous men was a delight! On the one hand we have the dark and handsome (and Irish!) farrier Mick, on the other the cheeky and carefree eventer Rory. I found myself completely torn between the two of them - and right up until the last chapter I couldn't decide which one of them I wanted Lottie to end up with. But the ending was just so perfect that it couldn't have happened any other way, and it left me with a huge smile on my face.
There is a real sense of community about these books, as all of the characters pull together - be it for a wedding, a cricket match, or to save Tipping House Estate. Each character has their own important role to play; to name but a few there's Pip, the journalist who is slowly tiring of life in the slow lane, Sam, the footballer's wife with a heart of gold, 'bronco' Billy Brinkley, Lottie's grumpy but loveable father, and Tab, the teenage goth turned horse groomer with a shameless crush on Rory. As always though, the best lines in the novel fall to Lady Elizabeth Stanthorpe - Lottie's grandmother. Rarely seen without a G&T and her beloved labradors, she makes it her business to know everything that goes on in Tippermere, whilst orchestrating a fair few dramas herself!
It's worth stating that this book can be read as a standalone - there's a handy cast list at the start to let you know who's who, and plenty of recap of what happened in the previous book. However I would highly recommend reading Stable Mates first for the true Tippermere experience! The informal style of writing endears you to the characters - I feel as if I know them as well as I know my friends in real life - and I don't want their stories to end. There's a fair few loose ends left at the end of the book, which give me strong suspicions (and hope) that there must surely be a third in the pipeline!
5/5 stars: Packed with fun, frolics, and an unforgettable cast of characters, Country Affairs is a must-read this summer!
Country Affairs is another delightful romp into the village of Tippermere. There are horses, dogs, studs, a canny old woman, sex and romance. Country Affairs is a quality sequel to Stable Mates, and is a really enjoyable story.
This story focuses on Lottie, who is being groomed to take over as Lady of the Manor, with a large debt hanging over its head. Lottie needs to come up with a long term fund raising initiative that will not only raise enough money to replace the roof, at Tipping House, but keep funds coming in to help with maintenance of the estate. However Lady Elizabeth has imposed certain restrictions, which makes Lottie have to come up with an amazing idea that works for everyone.
Lottie is helped by her willing friends who all return from Stable Mates. There is Pip, Amanda and Sam, as well as all the hunky men from the first book, including Rory and Mick, This can be read as a standalone, and the cast list at the start of the book really helps, to give an idea to the who's who of Tippermere, but I would recommend reading Stable Mates first.
Lady Elizabeth is my hero. From outward appearances she may look like an old lady, but her mind is a sharp as a tack. There isn't anything occurring in Tippermere, that Elizabeth doesn't know about and in most cases have a hand in subtly manipulating the situation to meet her needs. She is a loveable woman who is central to everything an very partial to a Gin & Tonic!
The beginning of the book is absolutely hilarious as Todd, who is Lottie's ex, rides in to crash a wedding, with information he misunderstood. These scenes from the initial wedding in this book were highly amusing and very entertaining and set the tone for the rest of the book. There are some moments of pure comic genius.
Country Affairs packs a whole lot of plot lines, and depth into its compact bundle, and is a joy to read.
I first became a fan of Zara Stoneley when I read her brilliant book Stablemates so I literally jumped into this book as I just knew it would be good. And, I was right! Full of fantastically interesting and sometimes complex characters, it is a real romp! One can't fail to be charmed by a certain Irish blacksmith. Actually, there are a whole host of dishy men in this book! Whats not to love about that!
I love the character of Lottie and being a wannabe country girl myself, I could picture myself as Lady of the manor too! Oh if only! Great things are expected from Lottie from her crafty and sometimes manipulative grandmother. However, its very hard not to love the old dear as she swigs another Gin! I found her to be a really likeable character. She's not as old and infirm as she sometimes likes to make out! Lottie is being pulled in many directions with her grandmother on one side and the handsome Rory on the other.
Being the second of the Tippermere books, it was nice to see the characters develop further and nothing of the first book was lost with the story and the characters just getting better and better. Don't panic if you haven't read the first book in the series, Stablemates, as this book can be read as a standalone. However, I'd suggest reading it anyway just because its a damn good book! With Country Affairs, yes there is a bit of ohhh laaaa laaaa and sometimes the steam was rising from my kindle but it was all good clean fun with this wonderful bonk buster! If this is how the country set behave then get me out there!! Fast! Jam packed with horses, dogs, beautiful countryside, crazy characters and a wonderful sense of community, I've said it before and I'll say it again...........please let me live in Tippermere!
The opening chapter of 'Country Affairs' sets a high standard for the rest of the book to follow but I'm happy to say, the more you read, the better it gets.
If this is your first visit to Tippermere then the introduction to the cast of characters and the village setting is invaluable. It makes this fun and witty story easy to read as a standalone. If, like me you devoured 'Stable Mates', then this second book in the Tippermere series has all the humour and heat but also shows how the irrepressible Lottie has matured. The only question; has she outgrown sexy Rory?
The characters are a curious mix of realism and caricature and it works well. On the outside they are easily recognisable but each has hidden depths, which makes you want to know their story. The animal characters are a comic delight and will make every reader, who loves dogs and horses, smile.
The simple plot allows the characters to tell the story and keeps you guessing right until the end; who will get the girl? This story would make wonderful television.
I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Ooh I do love to be in Tippermere... I loved Stable Mates and I jumped at the chance to read the sequel. As with Stable Mates there is a handy reference guide at the front of the book explaining who everyone is and how they relate to each other. Which is great because it means that even if it was 6 months ago that you read the previous book you can have a nice little reminder of what went before without lots of explaining throughout the book.
This book sees Lottie take on more responsibility at Tipping House Estate in preparation for the day when the Estate will be hers. Which brings with it a whole bunch of problems for Lottie, both financially and emotionally. The Lottie in this book is very different from the Lottie we met in Stable Mates, she has already grown so much, but in this book she really comes into her own. Don't get me wrong she isn't so different she's unrecognisable, but she's finally starting to see what's important to her, and she is taking to steps to ensure that she can follow through with her own hopes and dreams.
For the record, I'm Team Mick! There wasn't enough shirtless Mick for me in this book...
Stoneley has done a fabulous job of writing a story that will keep you guessing right til the very end (nothing the residents in Tippermere do is ever straightforward) and will also have you laughing til your sides hurt. Not to mention those scenes that will tug at your heart strings. If your looking for a book that welcomes you in and treats you like life long friends then this is the book for you because that is exactly how this feels.
I loved Stable Mates, but Country Affairs is my favourite of the two. Probably down to the skill of the author introducing me to so many wonderful characters and then following up with another knock-out story that really is like revisiting old friends you truly care about. Of course you are reacquainted to Tippermere in the best possible way – with a jump off!
BUT – I have a question…WHY ISN’T THIS A TV SERIES ALREADY???
There’s so much to love and laugh about in this story. Lottie is beginning to step up to her responsibility, even though she fears failure and life is changing swiftly. With a little help from her friends, and some of her past lovers, Lottie is trying her hardest to save the Tipping House Estate. Every step forward seems to be a step away from her relationship with Rory. Not least with the arrival of Lottie’s ex. Despite all of the chaos revolving around Lottie’s nearest and dearest, the wily Elizabeth, Lottie’s grandmother, seems to have her finger on everyones pulse and her clever meddling sends a few of the couples into a spin, and some in a complete opposite direction. Not the right time when there is an important event to plan that could secure the future of the Manor.
There’s romance, the flashing of underwear and many a bulging thigh – but also there are plenty of emotional moments in this fun story. Superbly written, Zara Stoneley’s voice really shines through to make this a fabulous read. Map to Tippermere please!
Having previously read Zara's last book Stable Mates I knew this book would just be as good. There is alot going on but it makes it an enjoyable read. There are dogs, horses, romance and studs, what more could you want? The main character is called Lottie who is going to become Lady of the Manor. I really liked the way Lottie manages to come up with a idea that works as they need to do maintenance to the Estate. There are some amusing parts to this story too, really enjoyed the story too. There are some cracking characters in this book and some hot men, you have been warned. Brilliantly written.
I took this book on holiday this was an entertaining read I enjoyed every minute :))))) Lottie made me laugh out loud at times! I hadn't read the 1st one but for me this worked as a stand alone read Thankyou so much to the author and for the pen and bookmark too which was very kind Thankyou to goodreads for being introduced to zara stoneley.i look forward to reading more of her wonderful books A brilliant 5 stars I would highly recommend to family And friends
Really glad that I bought all 3 books of this series at the same time. Read books 1 and 2 on a cruise and am ready to read the 3rd in the series now I'm home.
Reviewing Book 2 -
Lottie's ex Todd is in town and crashes the wedding (on horseback no less of course!) in Tippermere - bringing the wedding ceremony to a halt. Todd had to do something to stop Lottie making the worse mistake of her life - marrying a much much older man..... but Todd got it wrong... the wedding ceremony was Lottie's dad and his new wife.
Elizabeth is doing poorly in this book, and the decision is made to have Lottie step up, and Lottie becomes Lady in Waiting, and needs to prove herself ready to take on the responsibility of the estate. She needs to get some reserve raised to fix the estate's roof and keep the estate running.
Lots of relationship changes in this story from the first book, babies, foals and puppies are on the mind of many characters, and the wedding of Lottie and Rory is being planned... or is it really?
Rory escaping from Lottie's window is hilarious.
Without wanting to give away the answers..... What will happen to Rory and Lottie?, Will Elizabeth recover her health and keep up her meddlesome ways, and can she ever remember Rory's name. Will Lottie and her friends come up with a plan to get some cash for the estate.
Written for teenagers? Childish writing, childish story
This book was really not for me. I'm no intellectual, but I found the story childishly simple as well as the portrayal of the silly characters. Even the humour was no better than that in an 80s sitcom. I gave it 2 stars rather than 1 as somehow I managed to finish it. Never again, Zara, isn't it time you grew up?
If you are looking for a fun romp in the English countryside, this book is for you. It's number two in the Tippermere Series and it follows all the characters from the first book. In this installment, Charlotte “Lottie” Brinkely is set to take over her inheritance, the country house being left to her by her grandmother Elizabeth. But will the lovable boyfriend Rory be able to cope with all the responsibility, especially when Lottie has to come up with ideas to raise money to cover the estates enormous debts.
I found Country Affairs was a lot more fun than the first book in the series, although book one is good at laying the groundwork for all the characters involved. I felt book two was better developed and a lot more interesting. By the end of book two I was certainly ready for the next in the series entitled, Country Rivals. I read this book, not realising it was part two of The Tippermere Series, and although I now have to go and find Stable Mates, I think it works well as a standalone novel.
The story is reminiscent of Jilly Cooper, but more Chick-Lit than Bonk-Buster (there's a brief mention of sex, but that's about it), with a plot revolving around the wealthy and good-looking, and of course, horses. I was a bit confused about the importance of some characters (such a Tom) but that might have been because I haven't read the first part of the series yet! I loved Lottie though, and her scatty nature. I wasn't sure about her relationship with Todd, Rory and Mick, or who she would end up with, but I did like the ending and will be reading Country Rivals (part three) after I've read Stable Mates and truly got to know the village and its residents.
I've given it four-stars for a couple of reasons. One was that this wasn't a book that I could read in one go - it took me three months to read - but once the story got going, it was a lot easier. Another was the fact that it was written in third-person omnipotent, so there were a few occasions where I had to re-read a paragraph to understand whose POV I was reading from. There were a few typos here and there which left me a little confused but nothing awful, and all easily missed - I couldn't even tell you where they were off the top of my head. (Even Jilly Cooper has typos!) None of that detracts from the plot though.
Zara Stoneley is obviously a very talented author, and I will be seeking out her other books, including her more erotic titles. I would recommend The Tippermere Series for anyone who likes a 'Lust in the Dust' type novel.
This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Thank you to Harper Impulse for approving my request via netgalley for this book. I read the first book in this series Stable Mates earlier this year and was excited to catch up with the gang again.
In the months that we have been gone Lottie has really grown up. She is really starting to come in to her own and becoming Lady of the Manor is the making of her.
I found Rory to be highly irritating throughout the book. He really didn't deserve Lottie and I' m not sure I would have put up with him like Lottie did.
Lottie and rory have a host of great supporting characters. You have Todd who was was an excellent character. He really spiced things up in Tippermere. Sam is really funny and Pip, poor Pip. I felt so sad for her. Elizabeth is just the best. She always knows what's going on.
This was a really sweet story which I enjoyed but I couldn't help but think there was something missing. I don't know what and maybe it was just my mood but there were times when I struggled with this book and times when I loved it. I've also seen that there is a Christmas novella coming out in a few months (which I have of course pre-ordered) so I look forward to seeing the gang again at my favourite time of year.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.
I did not read the first book in this series, so when I began this book it was really confusing. I had to fight through the first few chapters to get a handle on everyone. Zara's writing style is almost like you are sitting there watching two people have a fast pace conversation. Sometimes I had to go back a reread areas to make sure I knew who was talking.
Lottie was the main character in this book. She is taking over estate from her Gram. There are so many twists and turns thrown at her that she can't keep up.(honestly neither could I). She has two love interests in this book. She seems as a character a little naive and scatterbrained, which was the goal of the character because by the end of the book she is to be lady of manor and in charge.
I would say this book was not a stand alone and that until you learn all the characters and Zara's writing style it's a bit confusing. This book took me an unusually long time to read. Once I was 3/4 of the way through it started rolling along. I was a little amazed by the ending it took me off guard.
This is the second installment to the Tippermere series & I loved it as much as the first book. Just gets better and better. Lovely characters, laugh out loud in places & well written story plots throughout.
I found myself routing for Lottie throughout, wanting her to succeed. I'll admit the book didn't end how I'd thought it would but I still loved the ending anyhow.
