It’s time for more tails and coffee!
Before getting to the things I didn’t like so much, I did want to say that this is a decent book, with some things I did enjoy:
- It has the usual witty banter between characters (this is something KD Robertson does really well that almost nobody else seems to be able to match).
- There are a few action scenes that are well done (eg the bar shootout)
- There is a fair bit of political stuff, personally it didn’t work for me but this is something else I have enjoyed about all of KD Robertson’s other works.
Unfortunately, I really didn’t think this was a great book, and definitely think it’s my least favourite KD Robertson book up to now. Let me explain by framing it via a few things the author is good at alongside how I think those things were not done well here:
1. The “Hook”:
KD Robertson is really, really good at coming up with an interesting “hook”, or interesting plot/setting combination. I believe this is the no1 reason they are so popular in this genre. For example, with Mob Sorcery you have a present-day Seattle in a magical world filled with fantastical things, like dragons. Add onto that the various beastkin factions and how they interplay with each other (the wolf mafia, fox Yazuka, etc.) and you have a combination that makes for an interesting story.
Similarly, in Heretic Spellblade, you have the Bastion/Champion system with the gems, ley lines, etc overlaid on a GoT-esque fantasy world. The author can take something that could be generic, like a fantasy world, and put a special spin on things in order to make their work stand out.
This book doesn’t have that at all, really. It’s a standard space romp where a guy is picked to lead a sector of space for some political/corporate maneuvering reason, and most of the book is him either on an ordinary space station or an ordinary ship. The political scheming stuff doesn’t land like it does in the author’s other books as well. It feels like standard sci fi without the “hook” that makes things stand out. I couldn’t tell you anything memorable about it like I just did with Mob Sorcery/Heretic Spellblade.
2. The MC
I found the main character in this book terrible and boring, to be honest. The author always seems to create a sort of stoic/gruff MC in their stories, almost as if they are meant to be a blank slate for us to insert ourselves into. But, for example, take a character such as Nick from Neural Wrath: his lack of an implant and his background with AI give him a lot of agency and make his interactions with the “dolls” interesting. In other words, it gives him the opportunity to at least rise above the “blank slate” status he is grounded in. There isn’t anything like that here unfortunately and the main character is just along for the ride most of the time.
3. The side characters
I didn’t feel like a single side character in this book was even close to being as interesting as some of his characters in his other first books. I thought some of his other characters, like Fei or Pola, were a lot more interesting right out of the gate. The side characters here feel more like cardboard cutouts that exist to glare at the MC’s crotch constantly instead of actually being interesting characters. Like, seriously, it’s a bit crazy how many people glare at his crotch all the time!
4. A few additional issues…
A lot of interactions also fall into the exposition trap where one of the side characters goes a bit too in-depth into various topics, leaving them sounding more like a robot instead of a real person talking.
In addition all of the alien races come off as just humans with tails, really, in terms of how they look, act, talk, etc. I know KD Robertson has a thing with tails but I really wish there was some effort into making the aliens a bit more different than “a humanoid with a fox tail”, for example. I know this is nitpicky, but I just feel like a bit more could be done here.
Never mind that the supposed Warhammer 40k/Mass Effect influences the author mentioned for this book don’t really appear here. For example, There are “psychics” and “psychic nullifiers” (in the 40K vein) but neither really gets much of a chance to do anything interesting or memorable other than one short scene of a spaceship being carved up. I felt like maybe things could have leaned into these properties a bit more (e.g the “grimdark” side of 40k) to stand out.
Overall, it’s definitely worth reading but it just didn’t feel like it hit the point of the author’s other works for me. Hopefully things may get better from here as it still is the first book in a series.

Exceeded all Expectations!!
KDR is by far my favorite author and because of this I started Stellarforged with high expectations, and wow K.D. Robertson was able to exceed them in every aspect!
Stellarforged has a massive setting and extensive world building that Robertson was able to create without feeling hollow. Each character feels real through their actions and interactions causing them to mesh into the world perfectly. Their motives feel both authentic and don't always take the most obvious narrative path. This makes the story a joy to get lost in because the reader can infer choices and paths but you can never truly see what's next. You can only be excited for what you hope to happen and invested when a new piece of the puzzle is revealed!
The political aspect woven into character interactions is one of the things that draws me to KDR’s books. His ability to inform the reader of larger political moves through smaller character interactions and reader intuition is something he has perfected. With Stellarforged’s huge world (an entire galaxy!!), it perfectly showcases the difference between the broader political moves and the small moments between characters that weave Ethan's and therefore the reader's understanding.
I can't write a review of a KDR book without praising how well written the characters are and how they interact. Every character has their own hidden motive whether honest or malicious that evolves over the story. This leads to a lot of authentic relationships building that transform into amazing and believable romance/relationships between the characters! No one in the story feels hollow or just there to be “eye candy”, only people living their lives. I also was blown away by his use of the translation chip, allowing each character to have their own sayings and phrases without it breaking each race's history in the galaxy.
I look forward to the next entry into the Stellarforged series! I hope there will be many books to explore the wonderful world and relationships K.D. Robertson has written! Thank you for writing such an amazing story I can immerse myself in and I couldn't recommend this book more!!!

I'd say this book clocked in at a solid 4.5 stars, as the beginning was pretty rough going, and the middle was just ok. The last third was really strong, though.
The MC is a man from Earth that is more or less a precursor to those that have been allowed to leave the planet and journey to the stars. It's kind of convoluted, but very few humans have left the planet to date. He's a privateer, having "bought" a small ship that can traverse the stars, and is doing what he can to pay his debt down. The series is set in the Milky Way, and outside of Earth, there is a massive gender disparity that sounds like a 1,000-1 female-male ratio. I really hate large gender disparity as a trope, as it leaves women gagging for any penis they can get ahold of.
He's told he's won this fabulous prize of becoming the Administrator for a far rim of the Milky Way through the schemes of one of his potential LIs. The first third of the book is him getting through the notification and other nonsense. The second third is him traveling to his future Administration location. The final third is him dealing with a lot of coup attempts. And those second two parts are were it starts to get interesting.
The other angle I wasn't super fond of his some guy with zero experience at naval combat, or commanding troops, keeps pulling winning tactics out of his tail feathers. Some of it is insights into human/alien nature, such as playing off their greed or seeing their blind spots. But it happens so often it feels somewhat heavy handed by the author. Thankfully, it appears that should diminish as the plot moves into book 2. I look forward to that.
The MC only has one lover by the end of the book, and it was fairly predictable. There are many others that are likely, so it's hard to predict who is next.

I was a big fan of this author's Heretic Spellblade series and had been trying the first book of each subsequent series, but found they all failed to meet the standard set by the original. This is the first series since then that I feel has some real potential.
The author is a good storyteller, and while the MC may be a little too Average Joe for some, I thought he played well to his strengths as a leader by the end of the book. The biggest weakness at this point is that the women are all fairly bland, likely a consequence of introducing a bushel of potential love interests all at once rather than bringing them in gradually and giving each time to develop as the series progresses.
The toughest pill to swallow is that we need to stoically accept the absurd premise that multiple ancient, galaxy-spanning races all suffer from a shortage of men. Despite effective immortality, there are few men around; few are born, and while they can clone the actual baby factories without a problem, they somehow can't clone the sperm donors. It feels a bit like a civilization capable of duplicating intricate Swiss timepieces being completely stumped by a sundial because nobody can figure out how to plant a stick in the dirt.
That said, it's no more ridiculous than our acceptance that all these disparate alien races are somehow sexually and genetically compatible. Or that alien atmospheres are "breathable" to humans, or that we could safely eat alien-grown food. These are all "truths" that science fiction has long conditioned us to accept, so in that respect, extending our suspension of disbelief to men being a galactic rarity probably isn't that much more of an ask.
It just feels like it.
I'm interested in seeing what the series will bring next.

Well damn, KD knocking it out the park already
Having read Mob Sorcery and Neural Wraith I've gotten used to KD's writing style. Add in the fact I binge mass effect and rogue trader in my college years and he has literally given me the kitbash of all kit bashes in sci fi. You can feel the grim touches in this space opera (because it is 100% a space opera) and the distinct mass effect and wh40k touches he has used to craft this story and this galaxy. Add in some touches from other sci fi ips to spice things up(like that amazing reference to transformers in chapter 1) and this is one to definitely keep track. The races are very uniquely designed, the cybernetics and genetic modifications are a treat, the weaponry is nice and fictional but still has enough science to make one smile and the space battle was *chef's kiss*. If you can, I wholeheartedly believe any lover of sci fi, mass effect or rogue trader(warhammer 40k) should give this series a try cause it us definitely setting up for the long haul.

Action, Intrigue, Pouty unicorns, Space battles and the glory
Action packed page turner with plenty of FAFO. Kinda has mob sorcery vibes with the businesses and the structure they fall into but instead of the mc working from the bottom and gaining credibility, this mc starts from the bottom and gets thrown to the top. Play dumb when needed and force the changes he wants with words or violence. Or violent words of patriotism can do the trick in some cases. Going to be a good series to follow and im stoked for the next book.

A fantastic start to a new series
While the series does share some overlaps with other popular books in the genre, this one definitely stands out. All the characters are extremely well done, the politics are interesting, and while the world building takes up a lot of the book it’s important and written well. Would have liked more spice considering the amount it’s danced around and how focal of a topic it is but I get the book went kind of long already.
Great first book and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more of the series.

Awesome new Series
Robertson is back with the first book in a brand new series. As always with his books, the characters, world building, politics and battles are done extremely well. This is an interesting take on space opera, it has elements of a dark fantasy except it’s a space opera and I love it. You can definitely feel the inspiration from Warhammer 40k and Mass Effect which I also enjoy. This series has a lot of potential, and I look forward to where it goes!

disappointing trend continues
Downhill trend in quality and series length in this and recent series is worrisome, hopefully the author focuses on a series or two instead of several that seem to get abandoned and added to a few years later or these mini series.

A perfect start to a new series
Robertson has done it again. I can't quite place why, but i just love how he does his sci-fi. Neural Wraith is by far my favorite series, but this is shaping up to be a very good rival.

Space Opera drama at its peak
Very well crafted galaxy spanding setting. It is a fun story rife with action, drama, political intrigue, and romance. I love KD Robertsons books and this is up there with Heretic Spellblade. Looks like another banger from him. I am excited cor the next book. Ethan is a great diamond in the rough.

Start of another great KD Robertson series
I love Robertsons books - his worlds are deep, his characters are engaging and his editing is strong (if you read alot of Kindle Unlimited books you know how important editing is)

Another amazing story!!!!
This science fiction story would be a must read for anyone who enjoys either sort of hard science fiction!!! Outstanding storytelling by a master storyteller with wonderful unique characters, an aggressive antagonist and some really enjoyable space n battles thrown in!!!

Absolute amazing new series
I love everything about this series so far. It has an amazing story and great characters. It does have that space opera flair with overly complicated empires and exposition but it is not to bad and reasonably easy to follow. I'm super excited to dog more into this story on future books.

Robertson always delivers
Robertson's greatest strength is world building. The politics are always intriguing, and the breadth of the universes that his characters inhabit consistently fascinate. This main character has some notable differences from his previous M.Cs, and I respect it.

Incredible start to a new series
Mass Effect, W40k and a generous helping of non-human women make for an incredible start. Between routing corruption, managing a failing empire and a heaping helping of sci-fi lore, this is fast becoming my book of the year for 2026. Highly, highly recommend, K.D outdid himself again.

An excellent start to the series.
Title says it all. An interesting setting, interesting plot, and a main character that has to use his wits to survive in a lethal galaxy. Get this book right away, you will not be disappointed.

Very good book
This is a fine fantasy harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like the praetorian and the mouse spy. I anxiously await the author's next novel.

What a setup
The book had a bit of a tough start. I was not really vibing with the characters at first and the conversations were very info dumpy. However after about 80 pages it was smooth sailing. From then on the book was running on all cylinders. Looking forward to book 2!

KD delivers as usual
Solid 10/10 book from KD as usual. Man mixing his writing style with space opera is just master class. I love the premise, the world setting and our main characters. The cast is spectacular, each character feels real. I don’t have much else to say other than read this now.

Great read
The space combat was just right, the MC is a believable mix of inexperienced but competent, while the politics and kingdom building are interesting without being too tedious. Highly recommend this.
The space combat was just right, the MC is a believable mix of inexperienced but competent, while the politics and kingdom building are interesting without being too tedious. Highly recommend this.

A real space opera with a satirical twist. Excellent action sequences and simmering plot line. Well written and excellent use of tropes.

Usually the main characters have some sort of special skill or talent, but we've gone for Mr. Super-ordinary this time and as a result the cogs really show. Why is everyone interested in him sexually? Why is he the leader of a whole star system? Why is anyone listening to a word he says? I hadn't solved this mystery by the end, unfortunately. A waste of good prose.
