I’ll talk about the things I didn’t like first to get it out of the way:
1. The author uses apostrophes ( ‘ ) instead of quotation marks ( “ ) for dialogue. I’m unsure if this is normal in other places, but it was often confusing.
2. The author described most things with too many adjectives. It got to the point where I couldn’t picture any one thing because everything had four adjectives depicting them.
3. She had little phases of words she used over and over. There was one chapter early on that said “he swiveled his head” approximately 4 separate times.
4. She would sort of switch between a medieval/old-timey dialogue and text and that of a more modern setting. It sometimes took me out of the story to see such a drastic change in style.
5. Blackmore would often repeat herself, or over explain certain things. I’m sure it was just trying to ensure the reader knew what things were, but she would have Jemmah (or toward the end, Kaybos) explain the purpose of an object or action in their inner dialogue, and then either remind us a few pages later what it was for or say it out loud to another character.
6. Finally, there were a few grammatical errors here and there. Nothing too egregious, and I understand she is a self-published author, so it can be hard to miss little things.
Besides my complaints (there are quite a few, I know, just hoping constructive criticism can help ☺️), I did enjoy the story. The plot was compelling and, to my knowledge, unique. I struggled a bit in the beginning with the world building, but I think that is fairly typical for fantasy books. The lore with the rings and the gods did confuse me sometimes; I did feel like that could have used a little more explaining or setting the groundwork. Once Jemmah met Thorn, things picked up. I really liked their interactions; they were funny and felt realistic for the storyline and setting. The pace after around 25-30% was excellent; it was perfect for keeping me hooked but not going too quickly to where it felt rushed. I loved how Jemmah was able to think so quickly to hatch a plan, and her and Thorn’s willingness to risk themselves for one another and their other loved ones was sweet to read. While the ending was fairly open, and Blackmore stated Valued is a standalone (“for now”), I would love to see perhaps a novella with Jemmah and Thorn tackling some of the future challenges (with more funny bickering, of course).

Valued is a fantastic read! It captured every one of my emotions; love, hope, fear, anger, sadness, pain, and joy. Jemmah's story is set in a wonderfully crafted world filled with magic and well rounded characters. Jemmah and Thorn are both beautifully and realistically flawed characters who make you root for them from begining to end. The magic and caste system created for this book are unique and well done, they make sense and are easy to understand while still being wonderfully intricate.
Following Jemmah as she grows and learns to understand that the world and life you know aren't always the best or the right way of life was an emotional rollercoaster that I couldn't put down. I sincerely hope that this doesn't stay as a stand alone boom and that we get a chance to return to her new world and see what it has to offer!
I highly recommend this book to everyone, but especially to readers who love a good YA fantasy romance with a happy ending.

Yet another enjoyable book from Maria Blackmore. Remaining within the genre, where in a magical land powers are conferred by the acquisition of rings, it examines the need for self worth and belief and the need to be valued by others.
The protagonist Jemmah has high expectations of her potential and the subsequent value to her land but her kindness sacrifices this due to sibling rivalry. This change to her perceived future causes regret to alter her attitudes. This story charts her journey, albeit unwilling at times, to regain her self value and that from others. You don’t have to be in a fantasy land to understand this very human experience, but the magic makes it more exciting.
I am really looking forward to future books by this author. Please keep them coming.

Absolutely loved this book! It hooked me from the very first chapter and completely pulled me out of my reading slump.
Jemmah was a fantastic protagonist, and I loved Thorn (Ralph). The pacing was spot on. Fast enough to keep me turning the pages, but with enough time to really connect with the characters and the world.
There were twists I thought I’d worked out, but just as I was feeling smug, something completely unexpected happened elsewhere in the story. I really enjoyed that the plot kept me guessing without feeling forced.
I also appreciated the strong moral thread running through the book about fairness, prejudice and treating people with kindness and respect. It added real depth to what was already a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy.

Valued is full of compelling characters and difficult family and societal expectations. It was a joy to read and drew me in from the beginning. It has a well thought out class system of magic and power dynamics. I enjoyed seeing Jemmah’s growth through the story as she came to terms with what brings someone value and grew to accept past choices she made. She was challenged to become more than she ever thought possible and was able to find more than she expected. I received an advanced review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. After reading this work I look forward to seeing what this author comes out with next.

"Things will never be perfect, but if we keep trying to make things better for as many as possible... Then hopefully we'll leave the world better than we found it. And that's good enough."
I enjoyed this book a lot. The pace kind of ebbed and flowed, but for the most part I was engaged and eager to see what happened next. There are a lot of characters, so at times it's hard to keep some things straight, but overall. Great book.
There were some lingering plotlines, but I feel like the book ended where it should end and those thing may appropriately be lingering out there.
If you love a spirited underdog story, or a bulldog heart in a Pomeranian body- this story is for you. The moral being that everyone can make a difference if they embrace their own gifts.
I appreciate the opportunity to read this ARC copy and look forward to more titles by this author.

It’s a great read for sure I’m usually very picky when it comes to fantasy books and I mostly read duel pov so it really was a different experience reading this book for me personally , I loved the family dynamics I loved the mfc & mmc , the storyline was good 👍🏻 literally no complaints from this reader.

I absolutely loved this book!
In this novel society judges your worth based on how many rings you have on your fingers. And of course everyone wants as many rings as they can get. If you are a null (someone with 0 rings) you are an outcast with nothing and you will likely live out your life in the forest foraging for your own food and defending yourself against other nulls who want whatever it is you have. It didn't seem like this was a place where you could earn rings either. Whatever you were bestowed on your 15th birthday is how many rings you had for life, how much magic you had. But Jemma was told all her life that she was going to be very powerful, that she would likely have 8 or 9 rings, possibly even 10 even though 10s were unheard of. Then her 2 sisters go and exchange something very valuable to them for more rings then their wildest dreams and Jemma has to save them in exchange for her rings/magic. Jemma then spends the nest few years winning prizes and undermining her sisters so she can win the big rewards because she knows once her father passes, the nobles will not allow her to live in the palace anymore and she will have to live with the other nulls. It takes her a long while to realize that the rings are just a number and she can make her own worth that she isn't defined by a number. She realizes that she can be loved even without the rings. She realizes she is strong and cunning and can help others and herself even being the lowest rank in her society.
I love the interaction between Jemma and Thorn once he kidnaps her. Thorn thinks she is just a spoilt, pampered 'princess' living in the palace and never lifting a finger to do anything. But he realizes she is stronger than she seems.
This is a great YA novel or really a novel for anyone.

This is my third book received from the website BookSirerns. It was an ARC I received a free copy of in exchange for a review. I am so glad I did. It was marvelous.
I will list the only downside first. The ending stretched a little too long for me. I understand why it did, but I could have used maybe one less chapter in the climax. Everything else? I loved.
- The world building was very well done. The author clearly thought out what the magic she was imagining might look like and how it might affect her world. I could clearly follow the magic systems and the consequences there-in.
- The characters rocked! They were interesting, made compelling choices, and mostly refrained from being too annoying. Even some of the places where I wanted to bop the characters on the head for being overly stubborn were places where the characters showed actual growth. (They then metaphorically bopped themselves on the head for their previous poor choices.)
- The twists felt realistic, the character growth felt earned, and the pacing was excellent. Rarely did I ever feel we were staying in one portion of the story too long. I was always eager to read every word.
One more note: This is a "clean" book in the romantasy genre. It could easily be read by and given to a teenager or young adult. There is enough romance (and kissing) to satisfy someone who yearns for that in their stories, but nothing particularly spicy. I like books either way, but i wanted to note it for those who care.
This was a fabulous book. It receives five enthusiastic stars. If you enjoy fantasy with just a hint of romance, or themes of justice overall, you will likely enjoy this book. I give it my heartiest recommendation.

I picked this up on a slow weekend and didn't put it down much until it was done. The premise is easy to summarize. In Jemmah's world the number of rings on your hands decides how much you count for, and you get whatever you're given on your fifteenth birthday with no way to change it after. Come away with none and you're cast out to fend for yourself in the woods. It's a blunt setup, but the book does something worthwhile with the way it twists the people living under it.
Jemmah is the reason I kept turning pages. She begins the story gentle and hopeful, asking for little beyond her sisters treating her decently, and by the time the plot proper kicks in she has curdled into someone who trusts nobody and chases only what she can physically hold onto. I appreciated that the author let her be genuinely sour for a good while. Her bitterness made sense given what her sisters did, and watching her slowly let go of the belief that a number settles everything was enjoyable.
Thorn rounds out the cast. He shows up with all nine rings and a knack for irritating her, and their bickering carries a fair chunk of the middle. I won't pretend the dynamic between them breaks new ground, but there's enough wit in it that I didn't mind covering familiar territory.
For anyone who keeps track of these things, it stays tame. There's a romance and some kissing and that's where it stops, so it would sit fine in the hands of a younger reader.

I found the growth in Jemmah as a character really intriguing in this book. We are not wired to enjoy bitter and sarcastic protagonists in books, however knowing her history and her downfall early on made her compelling. Her devious streak at losing her powers to the crone because of her sisters Tiah and Sassimah made her endearing and I was rooting for her early on. Had the author approached this differently, without establishing such a context, it would have been harder to support her, but the structure in this book worked really well. I loved the plots and ploys she made to get her revenge.
The family dynamic is interesting and the courting and power plays sets up a deep lore and history for the characters. The magic system based on rings and its place in society was interesting and the power that someone with a lot of rings made them an object of power and something to fear. As the story progresses and Jemmah engages more with Thorn, we understand more about her values and what she truly wants. I enjoyed their early dynamic or hostility and teasing, and his patience and perseverance with her was something I found enjoyable. The action packed events with the bear or in the wilderness added depth to their relationship and as the threats against them increased there was some thrilling action scenes in the later seconds, all of which were vividly described and took a darker turn.

‘Valued’ by Maria Blackmore is a standalone YA romantasy following Jemmah, a young teen forced to learn the truth about where one’s worth truly stems from. In a magical land that ties one’s value to the number of their rings, Jemmah is forced to prove herself and accept that reality might just be so far from what she’s always believed.
This was an easy 5 out of 5 for me. From the simple yet powerful title to the beautiful cover art and wonderful writing style, this was such an amazing read. Blackmore did a wonderful job hooking readers right from the jump—and throughout the story as well—with morally conflicting realities. From being disliked amongst one's very own family to not measuring up to society’s value standards, and the absurd tricks, twists, and unbelievable truths… this was such a fun ride of a book.

Valued was such a fun surprise, and I ended up flying through it! From the very first chapter, I was pulled into Jemmah's world, and I loved watching her journey as she challenged everything she'd been taught about power, privilege, and what truly gives someone value.
The world-building was one of my favourite parts. The magic and caste system felt unique, well thought out, and easy to follow without ever feeling overwhelming. I also really enjoyed the family dynamics, which added a lot of heart to the story.
Jemmah and Thorn were a joy to read. They're both wonderfully flawed characters, and their banter, chemistry, and habit of getting under each other's skin made me smile more than once. I found myself rooting for them the whole way through.

I absolutely loved Valued! This book took me on a complete emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. It was engaging, exciting and full of moments that had me desperate to keep reading.
I loved all of the characters and felt that each of them brought something important to the story. There were definitely moments that made me laugh, moments that broke my heart, and plenty that had me questioning what was going to happen next.
I will say, though, I felt Jemmah was done over! 😭 I really wanted her to regain her powers and actually get to keep them. It felt like she deserved so much more. I also couldn’t help feeling that the witch took far more than she ever gave back!
Without giving anything away, the ending has definitely left me hoping there is another book. I NEED to know if there’s still a Ten after all! 👀
Overall, Valued was such an enjoyable read, and I really hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of these characters. I’d happily dive straight back into this world if there’s another book to come!

I absolutely loved Valued! This book took me on a complete emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. It was engaging, exciting and full of moments that had me desperate to keep reading.
I loved all of the characters and felt that each of them brought something important to the story. There were definitely moments that made me laugh, moments that broke my heart, and plenty that had me questioning what was going to happen next.
I will say, though, I felt Jemmah was done over! 😭 I really wanted her to regain her powers and actually get to keep them. It felt like she deserved so much more. I also couldn’t help feeling that the witch took far more than she ever gave back!
Without giving anything away, the ending has definitely left me hoping there is another book. I NEED to know if there’s still a Ten after all! 👀
Overall, Valued was such an enjoyable read, and I really hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of these characters. I’d happily dive straight back into this world if there’s another book to come!

From the first chapter, you’re pulled straight into the world and invested in the story. The main character is taken on an action-packed journey that challenges and completely rethinks everything she’s been taught to value about herself and those around her. It’s a gripping tale that keeps you guessing and wanting more. The ending carries a great message and life lesson, making this a really enjoyable coming-of-age book.
Although you’re thrown straight into the action, you don’t lose any of the world-building. It’s organised and well written, developing naturally alongside the story. Often with YA fantasy, you see the classic, cliché magic system, but as other reviews have noted, this one feels completely unique and blends perfectly with the world and plot.
The characters are well developed and feel lifelike, with complicated and engaging dynamics explored with a depth you wouldn’t expect from such a new author.
This would have certainly been on my bookshelf as a teen, and it has so much potential to be developed into a wider series should the author want to!

I really enjoyed the concept of this book and the first third/half of the book had me gripped. It's a really interesting idea and felt quite unique, which I imagine is rare for the genre. However, the second half lost a lot of the pace and there was a bit too much internal monologue and expressing thoughts that would later be repeated out loud to characters. I also think the middle section with the two protagonists in the forests dragged a bit, and I wanted to know more about who the Crone was or how she came to be.
All that said, I would read a sequel if Blackmore ever wrote one, because the concept is really compelling and the problems with the book would be easily resolved!
I'm looking forward to reading her next book.

Such a fun read, loved Jemmah's attitude
Started reading this yesterday and ended up flying right through it. The whole ring-based magic system is such a cool concept, but honestly Jemmah was the best part for me. She starts out wanting everyone to just be nice, gets completely betrayed by her sisters, and basically turns into a bitter cynic who only cares about getting paid and getting her magic back.
Her back-and-forth with Thorn was super entertaining. He’s got all nine rings and rubs it in, while she’s just trying to ditch him the entire time. A really solid, fast-paced fantasy with great banter. Definitly glad I gave it a shot.

This book was a very cool concept, and I enjoyed the characters. However, I felt like it progressed a bit slowly, and it was a little lacking in the world-building. At times I felt like I was forcing myself to finish it, and switching to other books I'm reading. I'd say it's worth checking out to draw your own conclusions. Valued draws you into a dangerous world of life changing sorcery. The pace of the story held me in its grip throughout. While the true worth of privilege, power, rank and rebellion are all questioned. I loved the relationship between Jemmah and Thorn who annoy eachother in equal measure. Made me smile.
