I’m Harlow Evans. Shortly after my parents were murdered I moved in with my Grandma. It meant switching schools, losing friends, and moving away from the only home I knew. All I wanted was to finish the school year hassle free.
Switching seats on that first day altered my life. After surviving the loss of my parents I never thought anything could break me, but then HE came into my life....
He wants to hurt me Destroy me Ruin me
Tragedy brought me here, and a cruel twist of fate has me desperate to leave. There's also someone here that has me fighting to stay though.
All my life I’ve lived in the shadows, trying to go unnoticed, until I met HIM....
Malik Carter....
He’s broody, quiet, and holding on to a dark past. From that first meeting I was drawn to him, his painfully gorgeous looks and model physique, but I also knew he was totally out of my league.
He's the boy next door who, with his domineering personality, has somehow etched his way into my life.
When the Carter Brothers take it upon themselves to protect me from what’s coming, I’m not sure whether to be relieved or shocked.
You see, when a Carter brother loves, they love fiercely, strongly and protectively. No one can get in their way. They’re also used to getting what they want, even if it means getting hurt.
There’s one thing you should know about the Carter brothers before you read my story.... If you mess with one, you mess with them all.
Main character who doesn't know she's beautiful (but is the most beautiful girl on Earth) Instalove Unrealistic high school bullying Slut-shaming Rape as a plot device Unrealistic adults (teachers, school administrators, grandparents) High school alpha boy that acts like a 30 year old....
It was good, until it got sooo freaking boring! I lost interest and it's so sad because it had so much potential! Perhaps it's just me, because it seems like all the book I read lately is just like that... Rate: 2.5 *I did like about half of the book* stars.
It was somewhat entertaining but so much like the Slater brothers. The bullying was over the top; done in such a disgusting way that I wanted to stop and never finish. It wasn't bullying, it was rape; stalking, disrespect in the worst way. I felt sorry for the heroine for the loss of both her parents in such a tragic way, but she was annoying and dumb. Omg, he is looking at me so I turn red; but can't stop staring back. Are you shy or ballsy?
Harlow Evans had to move away from everything she knew when her parents were brutally murdered. Starting a new life with a Grandmother she doesn't know Harlow is anxious to see how she will fit into this new life. Harlow's life becomes rocky when she is targeted by the school bully but she happens o catch the eye of Malik Carter her next door neighbor.
Five Carter brothers come to Harlow's side to protect her. However with Malik, she has captured the heart of of the brother who does not date. Malik feels like Harlow is his light in a world of dark. He has had a lot of pain in his own life, that only his brothers share. Now he has found a reason for hope, Harlow.
This is a story that broke my heart. The bullying is front and center in the story. Harlow is trying to adjust to life without her parents and this is just another hit she can't deal with. Malik is a wonderful hero, he is intense but his love for Harlow shines bright. Loved all the characters and cannot wait for more. His brother Max is quite the bad boy, look forward to his story in particular.
this was everything i was looking for BUT the ending was OTT. the thing could've both been avoided. The Denny thing honestly wasn't a surprised, it was too predictable.
Mason and Denny could've had a beautiful storyline if it weren't for that.
as for Malik, i have nothing to say. he was perfect. so so perfect.
Good Lord, the DRAMAAAAA!!!!!! Harlow was constantly tripping over and taking insults like a nice punching bag...... And Davis? He took so many punches, but he won't give up that easy nope, he won't have it, he's smoking some real good shit......
Oh blinking hell I read this years ago and remember very much enjoying it, this time around all I could do was just shake my head at my younger self. Defo not going in my re-read pile.
Revolting slut shaming, stalking and high school bullying (that I hope is entirely unrealistic). Issue of rape as part of the plot. Really struggled in my re-read.
This is the first book I have read from this author and well, it left me being just content with what i have read.
The YA drama is somewhat over the top, it started with the INSTA attraction leading towards INSTA claim by friendship then towards more.
Usually I have no problem with it, and I can understand the intense pull, considering we are talking about 17 year olds BUT still, their actions somewhat proceede their age and in the next moment they act truly like "kids".
I caught myself several times with this expression on my face (yeah, i read the book next to a mirror LMAO)
then it would move towards angst, then extra bullying, and then more further nearing the end "BOOM" it really gets "too much"...
BUT if you keep in mind the fact that this is fiction and a YA fiction then you can somewhat let go and well, enjoy even if it deals with the abuse you can't really enjoy, right?!
The characters through the story - meet Malik Carter and Harlow Evans both being parentless and living eich with one grandparent (apart from Malik having 4 brothers around same age or a few years older)...
they bond really quickly despite the "strange" vibe that transparents between them at first, but after they find out they are really neighbours and their grandparents are having this close connection...things also quickly turn into much more, instant Malik's protective care of Harolow, sets them on the path towards each other's arms of discovery, both emotionally and physically. (and yes, the physical attraction and action is way off the steamy charts, and then you shock yourself thinking, shit, they're only 17!!!)
BUT adding the extra tention, they are both thorns in the side of one "bad" prick, a notoriously evil prank guy that plants a seed of evil attempt on destroying Harlow and Malik. (Ah, the glory of highschool days!)
this was a mixture of Tijan's Fallen Crest High series and Nero by Sarah Brianne (without the mafia factor, of course)
the book ends in sort of a cliffy although it sets the path for the secondary characters' story to unravel.
I never usually write a review for a book I DNF but I feel inclined. I've read about many and I mean MANY heroines that are described as 'drop-dead gorgeous and not knowing it', and I understand why, it gives the character a sense of innocence and makes her more attractive simply because she doesn't know how beautiful she is. Truthfully that doesn't bother me, it is a common trait with heroines in NA books so I've come to accept it. What does bother me however is when the heroine describes herself and attempts to talk down her attractiveness.
So in the first chapter our heroine Harlow talks about how she was bullied at her last school and she wasn't sure why. Her friend Lily tells her it was because they were jealous of her looks, in which Harlow believes to be a ridiculous statement. Observe:
"To me I'm just a plain ordinary girl who had mousy brown hair that fell to the middle of my back, dull blue eyes and an hour glass figure, which most boys find really unattractive."
Um what? I'm sorry but since when do boys find hourglass figures unattractive? I mean HELLO Marilyn Monroe is the epitome of hourglass figures and she was a sex icon. Anyway, putting the word mousy in front of the fact that she has long brown hair that fell all the way to the middle of her back was a fail. And I have yet to see someone who has blue eyes I would find dull. Putting negative adjectives in front of otherwise nice-looking features doesn't fool anyone.
To me this moment with Harlow reminded me of a girl I went to school with who used to say bad things about herself in search of compliments. You know that girl who has a rocking body but can't seem to shut-up about how fat she is even though she's wearing a bikini. That girl...I hate that girl.
I got about halfway through the book and just lost interest. Nothing in particular, just grew bored of the story and characters.
11/20/20 - I thought I would give it another try since I bought the book for $1.50. After 55% I got bored and gave up. DNF.
12/30/15 - I got the sample, but unfortunately it did not grab me. Great premise, but I have been leery spending $3.00 for books lately that don't have my full attention by 10%.
This was one awesome read. The storyline was amazing (well sometimes it was kinda cheesy but I loved it though) and the characters were well developed as well. There were many characters in the book and Hollllly Hotness!!! There were 5 of them???
Malik was sweet and a loving boyfriend but don't let that deceive you! He was hot and he was very much alpha. Harlow was sweet and lovely and I felt really bad for her after what she went through.
The plot was very well developed except that . I also would have liked it if the author had taken a little bit more time to develop Malik's and Harlow's relationship. I like a good love-hate relationship. This one went a little too fast for me.
Nonetheless it was a well-done book and ugh let me rant a little here! Can we talk about the cliffhanger! Ughhhhh
I cannot wait to read the other books! ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Hmm how I describe this book..? Worst. Book. I've read. This year. Really disappointed with this one. The plot sounded so interesting, but it definitely did not raise to the challenge. I've read about half of book before giving up. I felt like I was reading the diary of a 15 years old girl. The plot did not come together, her internal monologue was crap. So annoying.
I have no idea where to begin with this review to be honest. My mind is still trying to process the book, even though I've now read it twice!!! Just to make sure I've taken everything in.
After her parents are murdered, Harlow Grace is uprooted from the life she knows, and moves in with her grandmother. She leaves behind the only home she's ever known, school and friends. The only thing she wants is to finish the school year without any problems.
Unfortunately for Harlow, the nightmare she is about to unleash begins on her very first day of school. Through no fault of her own though - she merely switched seats, unbeknownst angering the resident school bully. But its not all bad, on the first day she also meets the Carter brothers, who turn out to be her neighbors. The boys her grandma has been talking about since she arrived.
Malik Carter, one of the five Carter brothers, comes across as this ultimate bad boy alpha male, with a devil-may-care attitude, who isn't interested in relationships. But there's more to him then meets the eye. He's gentle, protective and caring underneath all that. Once you learn about his back story you begin to understand all about the persona that he wants everyone to see.
From the very first moment that Malik holds Harlow in his arms, you know she's going to be different from all the other girls, and watching their relationship unfold is just beautiful.
The question is can their relationship withstand all the ugliness that is thrown at Harlow and above all else can her protect her?
I've been left utterly speechless after reading it both times, my emotions scattered everywhere, and I think that's because the storyline is a very personal one to me. I've stood in Harlow's shoe's, although not to the extent of what she endured, but there none the less. Even all those years later, the scars that I thought had healed felt raw and exposed. More then anything I wanted to reach into the pages and put my arms around Harlow and give her a big hug!!!
Followed by a few swift kicks up the backsides on some characters who utterly deserve them!!!!
This is definitely one of those books that will take you on an emotional roller coaster. Up then down and just when you think you're over the loop, you get hit with another one unexpectedly. There is tears, laughter, anger, drama, tension but above all else there is family, support and a whole lot of love!!!
All the supporting characters were amazing and I especially loved Denny. Her and Mason have left me intrigued and I can't wait for their story. Should be interesting one!!!
I feel like my three star rating two years ago was generous. I thought I enjoyed this more than I actually did. Does that happen to anyone else? Anyway, the relationship between Malik and Harlow along with the relationship between the brothers were the only good parts here.
What made this book so disappointing was all of the slut shaming and unnecessary bullying. Every time I turned a few pages it was there. Not even to mention that teachers were also bullying students?! Also, this book could have been so much shorter. The suspense surrounding Davis could have been cut in half. It was like a cat and mouse game that took forever to play out. Along with that, the author put us through the torment of something happening to Harlow only to be like "well it didn't really happen".
I can definitely say this reread sucked and I'm sure it almost put me in a slump.
Author find alert! Don't you just love it when you find a new author? Not only that but you read their book and instantly you know they will be a new go-to author for you? Yeah, this author totally wowed me and blew out the expectations of what I thought this book would be. While not my typical read, I devoured this book and cannot wait for the next book in the series. I took a chance with this author and book... best decision ever. Get ready to have your heart rocked.
I loved this book. It is one that has stuck with me since I finished it. It was a great story with a beautiful romance that had a lot of flaws, making it so real that I connected instantly. This book was sweet, intense, edgy, passionate, suspenseful, and had quite a few twists and turns along the way. This book spoke to me in such a deep way and made me get tons of the feels. I promise you won't be disappointed that you read this book and by the end you will be begging for more.
This is Malik and Harlow's story. Harlow is new to town and it seems not everyone wants her there. Enter Malik. He is a bossy Carter boy and one of five brothers... that's right ladies, there are more brothers to swoon over. Malik is a guy who is rough around the edges but has a heart of gold. He doesn't do relationships, but when he steps in to protect Harlow, the rest for them is history. Their love is passionate. Their story was not easy. It was hard and painful at times, but it was no less beautiful. Dive in to this book with your heart on your sleeve and your tissues in hand.
I love a reread and I always go back to this when im in a slump and need something that leaves me with butterflies. The whole Carter Boys series is glorious and Malik is my absolute favourite of the lot. Harlow and Malik are just so cute together ❤️❤️
^^^About sums it up. Again....high school students??????? Seriously. This is like college stuff but whatever, I LOVED IT! This story was great! I love the Carter brothers. Mason was an asshole but I need his side of the story before I go accusing him of anything. The story was funny and intense and hot as hell and sad. Had a lot of bullying, unwarranted bullying really, can people be that cruel? And can others just stand by and laugh at the cruel things going on? DOES NO ONE IN THEIR SCHOOL HAVE A F*CKING BACKBONE!? I swear if I went to that school and saw half the sh*t that went on I'd get kicked out for kicking those b*tches asses and scratching their eyes out the judgmental twats. How can someone find it funny to mock another about their parents being murdered!? And how can other stand by and support a b*tch doing that? Serious had some deep bullying and stupidity in this book that made me want to choke someone. Poor Harlow. Honestly she went through a lot of sh*t and she stayed strong. Doesn't hurt to have 5 amazingly hot brothers on you're side at all. God give me Maverick! He's my favourite. I don't know why but he just charmed me from the beginning. Malik was the quiet brooding one. Max the troublemaker. Myles the smart one. Mason the jerk. (he's a troublemaker too I guess) And Maverick the oldest and responsible one. Yet they're all f*cking charming and handsome and absolute TROUBLE! Can't wait for the other stories!
This book brought out a lot of emotions, the topics was written down in this book was really heavy going through. Like death, rape, bullying and even a teacher sleeping with a former student. It was a lot and definitely not a laughing matter. the storyline was really well done lots happened and you didn’t get bored.
The thing that brought the book down to two star’s in my eyes was sadness the female character. She was a bit to emotional for my liking and I’m not talking about when her parents death where involved in a conversation because that was totally understandable. More about how she acted sometimes crying for the smallest thing ,which actually surprised me because in the beginning of the book she acted really strong and at sometimes really funny. So she was a badass queen until suddenly she wasn’t. the whole thing confused me.
The book was a bit dark at times but some how the writing didn’t always make me fell like the were teenagers more like school kids as kindergarten or something. I had to jump over words it became it made me cringe.
The Romance between them however was very fast burning and it became very sweet and beautiful. The connected on such a level that almost nothing could tear them apart.
3 *WTF* Stars I decided to read this book after a rec in a FB book group for the 4th one in the series. Against all the reviews saying the same thing, I gave it a shot… and was a little disappointed. The synopsis seemed promising, but it wasn’t delivered. At the beginning, I automatically thought that is was a lot like Dominic (#1 Slater Brother series, by L.A. Casey) and don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Dominic and all the brothers, so I kept going. 30% in, and I realized I was wrong. It was a mix between Dominic and Nero (#1 Made Men series, by Sarah Brianne) WITH a touch of Bully (#1 Fall Away series, by Penelope Douglas). Again, don’t get me wrong, I love all these books, so again I gave it a shot. Ok, so, my main problem with this book is that it’s all over the top: the bullying, the drama, the blush, the childish acts, the stupidity of the teachers and other families, the perfection of Malik. The amount of times she just stares at him thinking how perfect his is, is too much. Parts of the book were too fast, while others were waaaay slow. I couldn’t get the timeline and only about 80% of book I realized that it sets in England. The disregard of her parents’ death is unnerving. Sure, she has panic attacks and doesn’t like to talk about them, but really? REALLY? Take it from someone who just lost her mom: it’s nothing like that. All the book she is either forgetting about her parents’ death or freaking out about it. She didn’t grow because of it, she just DIDN’T talk about them. At all. She didn’t want the pity that came with it, but if you lost a parent you know that not talking about it is worse. There’s also a lot of misspelling and errors, and I’m not from a English-speaking country and I starting going nuts at a point. The synopsis says and I quote: “All my life I’ve lived in the shadows, trying to go unnoticed, until I met HIM....” SHE WAS BULLIED. All her school life, so how was it even possible? Also, one other thing: How can she and Denny be described as quiet, nerdy, innocent girls and act like that? Something doesn’t add up. Overall, it was a nice read, but I think it could be a shorter book. It has a HEA, but also a cliffhanger, that leads to the 2nd on the series, with a different couple (Mason and Denny). I hope the second one is better.
This book was a good read, the characters were well written, and the storyline was good too.
What Harlow is put through by her fellow school pupils is horrendous. And it's not only the pupils who are party to the humiliation she has to go through.
However it doesn't stop at just humiliation. It goes a lot further than that. I honestly couldn't believe the lengths her tormentors would go to in order to achieve their goal.
What stands out for me in this story is the knowledge that family is everything. Malik is one member of a very strong family unit, and they stick together regardless of the consequences. Harlow finds herself a part of this family unit by default, and as such she can rely on them to protect her, or can she? Is the bond strong enough when lies are told and other people are trying just as hard to break her?
I loved Harlow's nan! What a character! And I love how her nan's story turns out! What a perfect ending to her part of the story.
I will follow with interest the other stories in this series as we discover more about each brother.
