She always puts her career first. Falling for the client was never the plan.

Briar Silva has spent her entire life proving she's worthy of her goals. As one of the top analysts in sports media, she's sacrificed weekends, holidays, and relationships. Now she's one story away from the promotion she's dreamed of. The only problem? The golden boy.

Dylan Summers is the resident golden boy of the MLB. As the face of New York's newest baseball franchise, the new pitcher keeps rising to the top, proving to be a problem for Briar and her company. Not only are his stats annoying for Briar, but his unwavering kindness and optimism also serve as a thorn in her side.

While Briar is determined to crack his image, the more time she spends with him, the more she blurs the lines. When ambition encounters something unexpected, Briar is forced to decide between the career she's desperately chasing and the life she's left behind.

Some stories aren't meant to be written.

This book has all the things: sports, great banter, romance, betrayal, and found family. It is a bit different than my normal reads but I’m glad I ventured off my path!

This was a really great story. Briar and Dylan really made sense together and brought each other out of their shells. I loved Dylan’s character, he was genuinely just trying to be a good person. I got very emotional during several parts of the story, mainly on Briar’s behalf, because she seemed so lost and overwhelmed. The storyline is a good reminder that everyone is fighting silent battles. In the end, for me, Dylan made the story. I’m definitely looking forward to book 4!

Thank you to Brittany Rubin for providing an advanced review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own!

‎
‎Oh, Dylan Summers, what a man you are ... He's such a massive green flag that he made Shrek look pale 🟢☘️🍃
‎
‎After another sports romance disappointed me, I came to Lovely Pain with low expectations. When it comes to this genre, I either love it or hate it. There's nothing in between. Honestly, I wasn't even sure whether to request this book at first because of the low page count. But who could resist a book described by the author as featuring a "morally grey sports analyst FMC"? 😳
‎
‎Hellooo, that sounds so yummy 😋
‎
‎Thankfully, Briar lives up to the title. Forget about a broken compass, Briar yeeted that shit out the window whenever she heard the word promotion. And as a proud supporter of the Evil Women Gang, I fully supported her. Say what you want about her choices. I prefer to call it "dedication". History has shown us that men have been stealing women's work forever. God forbid a woman strikes back at a few wealthy athletes 😐
‎
‎But then there's this fluffy little sunshine sweet muffin chocoball: Dylan.
‎
‎And whoa, look at me melting 🤧
‎
‎Dylan: *𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒚*
‎Briar: sus
‎Me: *𝒈𝒊𝒈𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈* 😂
‎
‎Dylan isn't your typical brooding, rich MMC who throws money around and drives a Ferrari everywhere. He's actually so ... Innocent. He can't even eat properly without getting crumbs all over his shirt. Someone please help this baby??? 😰 I was genuinely frustrated along with Briar while trying to figure him out because, like Briar's boss, I kept thinking, there is NO way this man can be this good???
‎
‎"𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜. 𝙄 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙩.” 𝙄 𝙜𝙧𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙚, 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙞𝙧.
‎“𝘼𝙢 𝙄 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙖 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣?” 𝙃𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙚𝙮𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙨, 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜.
‎
‎Stop smiling, you idiot 😔
‎
‎We live in such a fucked up society that an ordinary man who doesn't drink, loves children, helps his teammates, and drives a bright yellow ass Jeep feels like a mythological creature 💀
‎
‎"𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄’𝙢 𝙩𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙞𝙩. 𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙡𝙙. 𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙡𝙙."
‎
‎They really are perfect for each other. He softens her sharp edges, while she brings more color into his life, all while Briar tries desperately to convince herself that she's being professional.
‎
‎I mean, sure, girl heheh 😏
‎
‎“𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙧𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙞𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩, 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙛𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧?” 𝙃𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙨.
‎“𝙔𝙚𝙥, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩."
‎
‎Now, I have to admit that while I loved the story, I struggled a little with the writing. It's very dialogue heavy, while I'm more of a narration girlie. Sometimes, the transitions from one scene to another felt ... Ugh, jumpy? I don't know how else to describe it 🙂 I also had a trouble distinguishing Briar's best friends and kept mixing them up, but that's on me. The author actually offered me free copies of the other books in the same series, but I declined because I was way too eager to meet Briar 😳
‎
‎And I still stand by this: Premise > writing.
‎
‎“𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙, 𝙇𝙚𝙭. 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙣. 𝙊𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙧 𝙙𝙞𝙚.”
‎
‎Thankfully, all of that was redeemed by the way the author wrapped up the story. The page count turned out to be enough to resolve the main conflict. I was ready to throw hands at Briar if she didn't take accountability for hurting my boo boo, but she surprised me by actually proving that she was sorry, not just saying it. And Dylan didn't forgive her instantly, either.
‎
‎Love didn't conquer all this time. Trust did.
‎
‎And it was well earned. Loved that 😍
‎
‎"𝙏𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨; 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮’𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣."
‎
‎In the end, Lovely Pain is a good story about growth and change. About remembering who you are. About learning to ask for forgiveness, and learning how to forgive. All in just the right amount of balance.
‎
‎Lastly, fuck you, Trevor. Hope your chair is always hot.

Lovely Pain Book 3 of 3: The Lovely Series
Author Brittany Rubin
Publication Date October 10, 2026

First, I want to thank Brittany Rubin for sharing this book with me! ❤️

Yes, this is part of a series, and while I don’t think you absolutely have to read the previous books first, I definitely recommend it. I read three books in this series back-to-back, and I flew through them!

This one follows Briar, who has always put her career first. She’s worked incredibly hard to get where she is and is just one story away from the promotion she’s been chasing. Then there’s Dylan Summers—the MLB’s golden boy, and definitely not the person Briar planned on falling for.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Briar and Dylan. Briar is determined to focus on her career and prove herself, while Dylan’s kindness, optimism, and charm make it increasingly difficult for her to keep things strictly professional.
I loved watching those lines slowly blur as Briar has to figure out what she really wants. The romance had plenty of chemistry, and I really enjoyed the sports/media setting. There was also something really fun about watching someone who is so focused on her career realize that maybe there’s more to life than the next big accomplishment.

Overall, this was another fun addition to the series, and I’m really enjoying these books! If you enjoy romance with a sports setting, workplace tension, strong chemistry, and characters who have to figure out what they really want, I definitely recommend giving this series a try. ❤️⚾️

Definitely my favorite of the series so far! Love the story and the emotional arc of Briar. She grew to be the woman that she wanted to be and I’m so happy she found that part of herself.

As a baseball fan the timing and fast that Dylan was always available was a little suspect but I’ll let it slide because I really did enjoy their story, friendship and romance.

Very much looking forward to the next book already!

Briar, my heart goes out to her. Jaded and burned by love, driven by ambition. The girl is headstrong, I’ll give her that, but GIRL open your eyes. Honestly, she was my least favorite character in previous books, but seeing her transform in this book into her true self was perfect. Dylan may just be my favorite person in the series, my sweet Golden Boy. If you’re ready for a slow burn and a read that hooks you from the start look no further.

Briar and Dylan -- a nice slow burn romance. Briar was a very driven, independent woman that was all about her career who measured her self-worth by what she was able to accomplish. She was unable to fully lean into her relationship with Dylan initially because she kept waiting for it fail. It was fulfilling to see the self-growth and trust develop between them. The side characters, the friendships, and the easy comradery added so much to the story. Very enjoyable.

📚 ARC REVIEW | LOVELY PAIN BY BRITTANY RUBIN 📚
💗 Book 3 in The Lovely Series 💗

Sometimes a book just hits all the right notes, and Lovely Pain was one of those books for me! 😍❤️

First of all, can we take a moment for the slow burn? Because I absolutely LOVE when the tension builds, the feelings deepen, and you find yourself desperate for these characters to finally get what they deserve! 🥹🔥 The kind of slow burn that keeps you invested and makes every little moment feel that much more meaningful.

And the nicknames?! 🫠❤️ There is just something about those little personal touches that makes a romance feel extra special, and I was completely here for them!

Then we have the Disney references AND the country music! 🏰🤠 The Garth Brooks mention had me smiling because, let's be honest, I'm a country girl at heart! Add a little Disney magic into the mix, and you've pretty much found a way straight to my heart. ❤️

This was such a beautifully written book, and I loved how all these little details came together to create a story that felt special. From the country vibes to the Disney moments, the sweet nicknames, and that delicious slow burn, there was so much to love.

And then there's DYLAN. 👀🔥

WOW. JUST WOW.

What a guy! 😍 There are characters you enjoy reading about, and then there are characters who completely steal the show and have you sitting there thinking, where do I find one of these?! Dylan definitely made an impression on me. ❤️

Brittany Rubin has delivered another lovely addition to The Lovely Series, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in this story. It's the little things that make a book memorable, and this one had so many moments that made me smile, swoon, and fall a little bit harder for the characters.

If you love a slow-burn romance, swoon-worthy nicknames, Disney references, country music, and an MMC who makes you say WOW, then this one deserves a spot on your TBR! 🫶🏻📖

Brittany, thank you for the opportunity to read this one! ❤️

⭐ A beautiful addition to The Lovely Series!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Lovely Pain was such an interesting read because Briar is NOT an easy heroine to love at first, and I actually really enjoyed that about her.

She’s ambitious, stubborn, career-driven, and sometimes so determined to prove herself that you want to shake her a little 😭. But underneath all of that is someone who has spent years believing she has to work harder, achieve more, and stay in control to prove that she’s worthy.

And then there’s Dylan. 🥹

He was such a refreshing MMC. He’s kind, genuinely humble, team-oriented, and just… genuinely sweet. Briar spends so much of the book trying to find something wrong with him that watching her slowly realize there might not be a “dark secret” waiting underneath the surface was honestly one of my favorite parts.

I really loved watching their relationship develop naturally instead of having everything happen instantly. Their personalities are so different, but that contrast is exactly what makes them work.

The friendships were another huge highlight for me. Briar’s relationship with Lex, Halle, and Emerson felt genuine, especially because they weren’t afraid to call her out when she needed it while still supporting her.

My biggest struggle was that some parts of Briar’s internal thoughts felt repetitive, especially when it came to her obsession with finding something wrong with Dylan. But overall, I think that frustration was worth it because her character development was one of the strongest parts of the story.

This book gave me romance, friendship, personal growth, humor, and a heroine who had to learn that she didn't have to destroy herself trying to prove her worth.

4.5 ⭐️

Thank you to Brittany Rubin for the ARC! 💕

A slow burn that earns every bit of its payoff
Lovely Pain opens with one of the smartest cold opens I've read in contemporary romance — we watch Briar's wedding fall apart in real time, then jump straight to four years later at her best friend's wedding. In two chapters, without a single info-dump, you understand exactly who this woman is and why she controls every detail of her life down to the minute.
That's really the heart of what makes this book work: Briar's need for control isn't just a quirky personality trait, it's a real, specific wound, and it shows up consistently in her job, her friendships, and eventually her relationship with Dylan. Watching her let her guard down for him, one small moment at a time rather than one big gesture, makes the beach confession scene near the end genuinely earn its emotional weight.
I also loved the workplace thread running alongside the romance — Briar's job puts her in a real ethical bind (chase the story her boss wants, or protect the man she's falling for), and giving the romance those extra stakes elevates this well above a simple will-they-won't-they. Her closing speech about the kind of journalism she wants to build is such a satisfying payoff.
The friend group is a huge part of what makes this series special — Halle, Lex, and Emerson all feel like a real, long-standing friendship, full of banter that sounds like people who actually know each other. And I'm already dying to know more about Lex after her arc gets set up here.

Brittany Rubin has done it AGAIN! I had the honor of receiving an advanced copy of her third book, Lovely Pain, which focuses on Briar and Dylan. I can confidently say it is my favorite book of the series so far!

Briar is a sports analyst working her butt off for a promotion. She'll do whatever it takes to get to the top. But will her new assignment challenge her morals?

Dylan is the golden boy of baseball. He's squeaky clean, which is a problem for Briar, who needs to dig up some dirt on him. Will she be able to find something?

Briar's voice is distinct from the previous FMCs in the series. Her thoughts, actions, feelings, and experiences are uniquely hers, allowing this book to remain fresh for readers. The growth she experiences from beginning to end had me rapidly turning the pages to see what would happen next.

At one point, I knew the other shoe was going to drop, but I had absolutely no idea what direction Rubin was going to take the story! I loved that unpredictability.

I also loved the tie-ins to the other characters in the series. They enrich the story without taking the focus away from Briar and Dylan, and I loved getting little glimpses into how their lives were progressing.

This book hasn't been released yet, but I fully support pre-ordering! You aren't going to want to miss this read!!

My rating: 😍

I received an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Dylan and Briar

Dylan and Briar were honestly so sweet together, especially considering Briar is literally trying to dig up dirt on him. I loved Dylan’s kindness and optimism, and watching Briar slowly struggle with the lines between her career and her feelings for him was really enjoyable.

That said, I struggled with the girls in this one. I liked them in their own books, but some of their choices here really frustrated me.

Because seriously… why are we going to the wedding of the man who left her at the altar?!
That man should have been cut out completely, and the wedding invitation could have gone straight in the trash. And then getting upset with her for not being happy about it? Nope. I was NOT on board.

Thankfully, Dylan and Briar made up for a lot of that. Their relationship was genuinely sweet, and I loved seeing this tough, career-driven woman fall for the “golden boy” she was supposed to expose. But then the betrayal hit, and I was really unsure how it was going to work out.
Thankfully, Ms Rubin worked it through in a way that i didn’t expect!

A sweet sports romance with a lovable hero, a driven heroine, workplace complications, and plenty of emotional moments… even if some of the side characters had me wanting to scream.

When I tell you I’ve been in a reading slump… it’s been bad. This book kicked that slump in the butt! This book had me on my toes almost the whole way through. There were so many “stereotypical” rom com aspects of this book, but the best part was not being able to figure it out until the words were on the page. I loved Briar’s character so much. The way Rubin really makes you feel for her and want the best for her while also wanting to yell at her for some of her decisions, was great writing! I loved how there wasn’t a bunch of the back and forth you see in these kinds of books with the main characters. It felt so real! Like other romance novels out there with a universe that all the characters are interwoven, it is done spectacularly in this book. I read the previous two and loved seeing the other characters in this book and the other stories lining up. Definitely recommend! Great book!

I received an ARC and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'm absolutely obsessed with this series but Briar is my baby. I love Briar and Dylan so much, I could honestly read a whole series just about them.
Briar a sports analyst is put to the task to find something wrong with star player of the up and coming Garnets baseball team, Dylan. She starts to cross a line with him and has to decide if her career or Dylan is more important to her.
Honestly Briar's ambition is so inspiring and when she uses it for good its even more inspiring. My literal only complaint is that I wish we got more Briar and Dylan at the end of the book! I'm super excited to continue this series and wait impatiently for Lex's book to come out!

I had such high hopes for this but the FMC just killed everything that I could have possibly enjoyed. MMC was kind of a bore to me as well, tho I probably would’ve enjoyed dual pov for this so much more because I really would’ve liked for him to be fleshed out.

Briar IMHO is just a horrible friend and person for what she did. Did she hit send? No, but she was looking to do it anyway and didn’t even put up a fight over her name being slapped on something that wasn’t hers.

She should’ve had to grovel a lot more to Dylan and her friends.

Also, unless I missed it in the sea of Alani drink drops, why did she and her crew need to go to her ex fiancé wedding? Maybe there was something more about their friendship circle in the previous books but I just thought that whole bit was so odd.

I enjoyed this book so so much!

Every book of this series has been wonderful, but this one has to be my favorite! Dylan was truly such a saint in this book!

I love the Black Cat x Golden Retriever vibe! Seeing how guarded she is and learning why was so amazing and gave a clear picture to some of her comments in the other two books!

I was thrilled to see an update on Sebastian and Halle and excited to see how that will wrap up in a pretty bow!

Brittany Rubin is a fantastic author and I highly recommend her books!

I love Brittany’s way of opening a character up and letting us in to understand Briar more. Briar wasn’t a character I just fell in love with but I think that’s the point! She’s not ‘easy to love’ but the journey of her mid twenties plays out beautifully and not so beautiful at times. I fell in love with Dylan the moment he did a press conference 😂 something about his sweet demeanor and being nice even when others aren’t nice to him, is always a draw for me. Overall the book was fantastic! It did have more outside of marriage (but still very closed door) intimacy than I usually like to read but nothing that made the story less exquisite. You will want to grab this one in October!

GUYS! This is the one.. I ate this book down. Briar is so complex, and the story has grit because of it! You know why she acts the way she does, but you also don't want to excuse her for it still. Then again you root for her at the same time. This one was a whirlwind of emotions. And DYLAN?? He's a sweetheart! I love him. My favorite MMC so far!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to be an ARC reader! This book was so good. I ate it up! It had emotional depth, personal growth, humor and romance. All was really well executed and left me wanting more. I loved the relationship between Dylan and Briar. Their dynamic was so cute. Dylan was also really refreshing - no bad boy vibes at all. Highly recommend curling up with this book.

This series has been SO cute and such a great palate cleanser from the viral romantasy genre. Brittany has done an amazing job at creating such relatable characters and stories of love and girlhood. Her storytelling and writing keeps me turning the pages. Wanted to shake Briar a couple of times, but man was she a fun character to read. Can't wait for more!!!!
