You Want To Do What?

So this one starts out with a somewhat unique setup. The wife just tells her husband straight up and out of nowhere that she wants to have an affair. The husband doesn't get angry and they just casually talk it out. That of course really stretches believability but hey, at least the author tried something different for this genre.

I did have a few problems with the story.

1. The husband just casually moved into cuckold status without any previous inclination to do so.

2. The wife never said, nor did the husband ask, where her desire for an affair came from. I mean she was willing to risk her marriage and alienation from her children but gave no explanation.

3. The wife never showed any remorse or accountability for risking her marriage and family.

4. Because of the above I didn't find the wife very likable.

5. With the husband peeking over bathroom stalls, sneaking around to spy and never seeking accountability or explanation from her, there wasn't much to like about him either.

Max’s writing is flawless as usual and at the three-fourth mark I was thinking five stars. But the ending was abrupt and unsatisfying leaving me with an empty feeling. It was as if the author just got tired of writing and quit.

The sex scenes were hot and the story was unique so give it a read and see if you like it better than me.

Natasha tells her husband, Jon, that she wants to have an affair with her colleague, Patrick. She needs to decide soon, before their company has its annual, week-long tax season marathon, in which employees work long hours and stay in a hotel in the city. She's ready to quit her job over this. (Staying at the company and subduing her feelings for Patrick doesn't seem to be an option, and she doesn't want to get a divorce.)

Jon realizes he's aroused by the idea of his wife having sex with another man, so they make plans for Jon to be at the hotel and the office to witness Natasha's liaisons with Patrick. (This is one of the few cuckold/hotwife books I've read in which the couple handle the logistics of dealing with children realistically. Jon is a stay-at-home father, but he also sends the kids to their grandparents.)

There is much hot sex, much of which Jon enjoys witnessing. (The logistics of this may not be totally realistic, as another reviewer pointed out.) He also gets to enjoy his own time with Natasha. (Confidential to @BobbyH : It wasn't too angsty for Jon, I thought.)

The book starts with the unlikely line said by Natasha a high flying accountant and mother of two, to her house husband
“I’ve been thinking about having an affair”
The story is told from the husbands point of view, he is surprised by his own reaction to his wife’s admission, their discussion leads to one of the most intense and satisfying lovemaking sessions in their relationship. The husband only has a short time to make up his mind if he should allow her to have the affair or resign from her dream job and so remove the temptation to cheat. Inevitably he gives her his consent to pursue her affair and that sets in motion a train of events that leads her deeper and deeper into adultery.
Natasha researches the situation to better understanding her husbands arousal at her impending adultery and proves to be a resourceful wife engineering the situation where the husband can watch her flirting and eventually the sex act.
I found the book pretty well written as you would expect from Max Sebastian although I did feel this was written very much to a formula and was devoid of any tension or twists. The parts where the husband watched his wife and her lover were to contrived and were not practically realistic as I doubt he would have been able to get as close as he did without being seen by Natasha’s lover. Even when he was out on the hotel balcony watching the couple have sex did not ring true to me, as I doubt anyone could have stayed out there in the cold for so long without making any noise to alert the other man to his presence or even arouse his suspicions. A pleasant book to read but not up to the usual high standards of the authors other works as it lack any real emotion or tension.

I have a great fondness for Max Sebatian's work, and I was not disappointed by "A Calculated Affair." When Jon's wife Natasha announces "I've been thinking about having an affair," Jon is forced to reconsider all he's assumed about his wife and their marriage. She's not in love with her high-powered coworker, but definitely in lust, and contemplating how to proceed. That becomes Jon's challenge as well--and since Sebastian has labeled this novella "a wife-sharing romance," it's not a spoiler to say that Jon gives his blessing to Natasha's adventure. Saying more about how the couple moves forward would indeed be a spoiler, but Sebastian has indeed written a story that is full of both sex and romance and is well worth the readers's attention.

I bought this book almost 18 mo ago and have just read it again for the 3rd time.

I really like this book. It is very well written and, although a little short, there is some solid character and couple development.

I enjoy the pretty open communication between the couple and how this Calculated Affair satisfies both of them. I appreciate the husband standing up and setting some of the boundaries for the wife's relationship(s). It is a positive agreement within a consenting marriage.

Looking forward to Max's next book.

Every page another husband Squirms

This novella kept my brain and genitals from being linked together. So many views about sex, love and cultural dreams of marriage, love and sex.
I really wanted my wife with me as I read the book. I am still looking for a emotionally comfortable answer. Please don't tell my wife!
