Valaztein redefines magic. Transforming the world of fantasy into something that not only reflects on the worst and best of human kind but enhances our very understanding of what those concepts mean. The way sirens are treated in Lightmoon, the taboo around dark magic in Valaztein, the regional splits and literal “wall” in Tashiki, the gravity being mined out of Zhyheria are all a reflection and commentary of real-world events and real-world sentiments. This book made me feel, think, laugh, hurt, and ponder. It is everything fantasy should be: a brilliant plot, characters that are both love-able and hate-able at once, a world that teams with promise and discovery, a mystery, a complex-web of seemingly unsolvable disputes, and a set of heroes so messed up they can’t help but save the world. This book, however, as is the case with the entire Shadow Heir trilogy, also has something most fantasy and young adult books lack: it changes the way you think about the world. It shows you the complexity of how people are and makes you believe we can all still make a difference. If you only read one book in your life, make it this one.

Valaztein was truly a breath of fresh air. It’s rare to find genre novels, especially fantasy, with a writing style like this. You’ll be in the middle of an action-packed fight sequence and find one of the most literary phrases ever.

Urumi’s POV comes to mind for this, and Analuna’s too. They have some of my favorite lines:

“To love someone from behind a throne is to love them to their knees.” - Urumi (while he’s in the Archipelago, I believe?)

“Fate is an excuse for children, not kings.” - Analuna (when she’s talking to Rafi atop Aliz Abdhara, which is this magical dune)

“Youth is a blessing, not a promise.” - Urumi (after the war)

The characters are very well-developed with distinct personalities, and I spent the whole novel so excited to know each POV’s next moment.

I found the inclusion of poetry and music in a fantasy book also a very unique and novel concept. The last poem by the bridge was beautiful, and the formatting felt so mystical.

Absolutely fantastic!

P.S. Valaztein is also beyond funny, specifically with anytime Grek and Miko are on the page.

Thank you to Emilia and R&R Book Tours for an ARC!

This was such a fun read! The world building was well-written to the point where I could picture myself traveling alongside the wide cast of characters. Our primary FMC, Naomi, was determined, courageous, and adventurous, with a clear vision of how she could make the world a better place. Our primary MMC, Ez, was devoted to Naomi and her cause, had a huge heart when it came to her, and was a kick butt dragon changeling. Our remaining MCs, Amethyst, Urumi, Heather, Grek, and Analuna, were all well-developed with full, personal development character arcs. We even got chapters from each of their POVs which provided great insight. Please note, while there were multiple romances between the cast of main characters, this was not the primary focus of the book and not every couple got an HEA. Overall, this one was a fun time!

Valaztein is an immersive fantasy filled with dragons, magic, ancient lands, secrets, and plenty of adventure✨ I really enjoyed the imaginative world the author created and the sense that there was always something new waiting to be uncovered.

The multiple POVs gave the story different perspectives and allowed me to experience the world through different characters. I also loved the mysterious atmosphere and the feeling of discovering the world alongside the characters.

OH MY GOD!!!!! 🥹

Valaztein was so thrilling. Solving that siren song mystery with Urumi at the end was WILD!

Analuna was my fav character by far! I love seeing feminine girls in fantasy cause, yessss, why shouldn’t we have pink gowns and swords too??!

And Grek, omg…

An inspiring, fast-paced read! Definitely would recommend if you’re looking for something to keep you up wayyyy too late. 🩷
