Minami has a reputation of being coldhearted because she never shows her emotions - as far as she can remember, she has never cried. e an outcast in her class. She has also developed a habit of filming things with her camcorder which has further pushed her into the role of an outcast as her classmates don't understand what she keeps filming. Only her classmate Akira, a former teen actor, takes an interest in What Minami is doing - together they share experiences from being both in front and behind the camera.
Manga oneshots are a tricky thing - they're often debut works of authors to get their foot in the door and their length rarely allows any true potential to shine through. They're either sweet but superficial or rushed with unsatisfying conclusions. They can often be a good quick read for in between, but rarely do they really stick. REC was one of the first manga oneshots that's left an impression on me and has been among my favourites since I first read it a decade ago (oh my, 2012, it really has been a decade). My reread hasn't changed much about my opinion.
Makino's artwork is generally quite a generic shoujo style but it has a refined touch that I've always appreciated. Her stories are almost always on the sad side and that's not exactly a bad thing because her characters are great at expressing sorrow. With just a few extra lines to the characters' faces, you can really see the hurt in their eyes. REC arguably makes the easy approach by dealing with subjects that are generally considered emotional such as death. And while it may seem a bit contrived, I like how Makino handles the subject and shows us different perspectives, including how it really is often used in a contrived manner.
Given a few more volumes, REC could have been a meaningful story with a deep character analysis - for example, we never quite learn why Minami is unable to show her emotions (although, mind you, some people just have a personality like that and there may never have been a reason to begin with). Given that it is a oneshot, though, I think Makino does an excellent job of presenting this story without it feeling rushed or axed and some genuine pulling of heartstrings. It may not hold itself as strong as other longer series, but it makes a pretty amazing oneshot.
On a side note, it seems that Akira's name is Satoru in some translations as both are written with the same kanji 暁. That being said, I am inclined to believe that Akira is the correct name as my edition is a licensed translation.
This volume also includes another short story about a girl and her boyfriend's obsession with her hair. It's cute but falls into the cute but not very meaningful group of oneshots - at least it's nice to read something lighthearted after the main story REC
This story is about Aizawa Minami, a high school girl that is never shed a tear and an ex-actor, Satoru Wakabayashi who is also going to the same school as her. The story started with the rumor going around the school that Aizawa likes to film things and always carry camcorder anywhere. Because she is known as a cold girl in school, a junk mail about a dead cat film was rumored to be filmed by her. Satoru Wakabayashi saved her when boys are trying to pick a fight with her just because she cut the computer lines at school. Aizawa felt anxoius about him, yet she never show any expression. From that on, they become friends.
Aizawa said that she never filmed human, because she hate them. But, she started to film Satoru and said that she would not film things that she don’t like. One day, she discovered that Satoru never smile like he meant it. She was getting mad at him, and asked him to show her the real smile to film it. Satoru said that he was smiling all the time. Because she got really mad, she left him and the camcorder. Satoru took the camcorder and saw the content. They were all film about him smiling. But when he saw it, his expression getting really sad.
The day after, Satoru didn’t go to school for about a week. Aizawa thought that it may be her fault. But suddenly, she got a phone call from him at school. Satoru said he wants to see her. She dashed at the place where Satoru firstly approached her. Satoru had waited for her there. He gave her the camcorder she left the past days. That way, she discovered the real reason why he absent, why he always give fake smiles, and why he quit acting. But the facts that make her cried a lot in the end was about what he feels. And, that’s ‘REC’ about: ‘the day you cried’.
I really cried in the climax and the of the story. The advice I could give you is: prepare some tissues..
This is one of the first times I've been so moved after reading a very short manga. In one volume, Makino Aoi managed to overwhelm me with emotions. Her drawings are expressive, shocks and beautiful to watch.
The story is more serious and sad that the ones usually told in this type of structure. It talks about the end of a dream, working in the entertainment industry, image rights, the attractiveness of people for the sensational and sordid pictures/shows too. It is very well led by the artist. Finally, with the characters, the reader follows the courageous choice that Minami and Satoru do during their adventures.
Minami is very shy and quiet. Meanwhile, she supports malice, fear of difference about her behaviour while she is noble and generous in her actions. Satoru is more complex. So used to playing a role in the limelight, he even wants to control and orchestrate the end his life.
But one encounter can change everything ... One person can give you hope! One person may see yourself as you are, reach out for you and give you the desire to be better. This is a beautiful love story, sad and shy. A wonderful job!
I thought it will be kind of 'fluffy' or 'flashy-with-antisocial' kind of romace manga. but it didn't. The writer gave us hints in every chapters about what will happen next, so when the real thing happens, it shocked me how it . But from all things, what makes it fun and enjoyable to read is how the writer developed the two's feelings in such a cute slow pace that allows the readers to understand the two's conditions, feelings and past. The ending stabs in an amazing way. REC - Kimi ga Naita Hi is a well done and beautifully written love story.
This 4 chapter story is about an emotional closed off teenage girl and a retiring teen actor who befriends her. It's a very short but maudlin piece where the story moves quickly and include many of the typical teenage angst tropes in the high school drama shoujou. The beauty of this manga is that it doesn't belabor or drawn out the action and story anymore than it should. While it is a bit on the quick side, it pulls you along. I enjoyed the pacing and the story.
When I saw the first pages I thought about not reading the manga at all. It's not an ugly style but really childish (you know, drawn for 13-year-old girls) and I wasn't in the mood for something like that. Nontheless, I decided to read it, it's a short story and I am good in just ignoring facts that annoy me - like the style. And I have to say it was a really sweet story. Not very realistic, but sweet nontheless. A story for people to read when they are really sad or just want to cry.
i read this on a holiday in the morning next to my mom when she was still sleeping. i finished the manga and my mom woke up and saw i was crying. she asked me what happened and i told her about what i just read. she said i was weird whyyyyy!!!! T^T the ending was sooooo sad best one-shot i read so far
I swear this book should have been called the day I cried! This was one of the best mangas in the world. By the end, I was shedding tears. It was really sad! I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! Waaaaaaaaaaaaah! TT_TT I just, (sob), felt like crying for hours. Every time I see the last scene, I start bawling.

Guter Manga.
Good manga. I like the bittersweet ending. Of course I like happy endings, but if it doesn't fit the story, then so it is. I really like this manga.
I really cry not often, but this story was so absolutly heartbreaking! I just read "the final loop" also by aoi makino and the most storys were just good, the 3 one I started to cry again. Besides I really enjoy her artwork. Definitly recommending it!
Honestly, I thought this story was going to be pretty boring. I thought it was one of those stories where they would end up together but it wasn't like that. I wasn't expecting the illness and there was a lot of honest words and feelings in this manga. It was definitely worth reading!
I love this book so much! I 've got it as a present from a friend and it's WONDERFUL! I cry very often in sad stories, but MAN! This destroyed me! It's so beautiful TwT ♡
Made me cry a bucket of tears. I knew it will happen but I didn't expect to be much painful. Yeah if you love manga that will bring you into tears then this is what you are looking for. :)
Okay, hear me out. I bought REC - Kimi ga Naita Hi as a kid and I loved it then, and it still hits just as hard. This one shot is heartbreak in the best way — tragic and beautiful, the kind of story that stays with you.
The only real complaint is that it’s too short. I wanted more because Makino Aoi packs so much feeling into so few pages. Her art is breathtakingly expressive, every panel full of emotion and small details that make the story land. This is one of the rare times a tiny manga left me genuinely moved. I straight up cried during the climax and again at the end.
If you read it, bring tissues. Short, powerful, and utterly unforgettable. Five stars, no question.
"The snow is gently falling... It disappears in the blink of an eye. The day I cried."
AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH I am still crying after that ending. I love this manga so so much! Words can explain how beautiful, heartbreaking and amazing this manga is. 😭😭😭😭 But no matter what this ending was beautiful! <3 Not getting over this one ever <3
