wild ride! I recently read the author's other book The Book of Our Past Lives and feverishly searched for something else by them to read. I wasn't sure what to expect with GILLS, as the premise seemed to be completely different from the The Book of Our Past Lives. And, absolutely it is completely different and yet totally hooked me.
GILLS is a science fiction (ya) novel about a young teen who discovers she is half alien half human, and yes, she has gills, and yes, she can swim underwater breathing through her gills! First, I love the premise and am personally tired of all the rehashed dystopian books out right now (Hunger Games, Divergent etc). Gills is filled with a million twists and turns which I don't want to touch on and give spoilers - but this author keeps me glued to the pages I swear. Adjectives that come to mind are Fun, Exciting, Sweet, thought provoking (I am thinking about fish and the ocean a bit differently today) and great superpowers I wish I had!!
I am a bit older than a young adult, but loved it anyway. Gave it to my teen nieces and they devoured it, and asked for the sequel. K.M. MacKinnon is my new favorite author. Can't wait to read their next one.

Exciting, a page turner.

Gills is to the ocean, what Maximum Ride is to the air. It leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat wanting more. There were a few typos like first letters missing on a sentence but still very readable. I tried to sign up to receive an email when the sequel comes out but it didn't work. Could be because I'm on a Kindle I will try on my computer tomorrow.

really loved this book and so did my kids. Did not know from one page to the next where it was going - and had a blast reading it. No gratuitous violence or gore. Loved that the heroine learned to trust her own instincts and protected herself if/when necessary. The ending made me both happy and sad - happy for the outcome - but sad because I now have to wait for the sequel!!! loved it.

read this after the author's other book: The Book of Our Past Lives.
Completely different, and definitely geared toward the young adult crowd, but it was strangely compelling and totally engaging.
Love this author.
