It is the beginning of the second century AD, and the first Dacian War has recently ended. While Emperor Trajan is preparing to return to Rome in triumph, Marcus Valerius Vetus, a general in Trajan’s army, learns of a tragedy that takes him home to the Roman province of Aquitania with a thirst for vengeance. But when the trumpets of war sound again, Marcus returns to battle in Dacia to defeat one of the Roman Empire’s fiercest foes. The Roman General follows one man’s journey through battle, misfortune, the triumph of the Dacian Wars, and a victory that leads him to Rome. It is a rousing adventure of courage, adversity, conquest, redemption, honor and love.
I’m a big fan of historical fiction and especially those concerning the Roman empire. Anything from that period of history always fascinates me and I knew little of the events portrayed in this book, which just made it even better. This is really a great book, a true page turner and with grippingly real battle scenes. Not only was the story excellent but it made me want to find out more about the Dacian War and the events after it. The author has a real talent for blending history and the art of crafting a great story, something that can so often go astray in the hands of less talented writers.
Another great book by Jocelyn Murray, who blends real historical timelines with her ability to tell an interesting and exciting story. The Roman General is a good read and a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
i wnjoyed the Christain intrigue at first until the story line became predictable all the way to the end. the military scenes were great except that a the word "sir" was birthed in the middle ages and the woman of the house is referred to as "domina" lady is also middle aged. those are just technical issues. the scenes on Rome and elsewhere were rich and real. it was a nice read
