Ksiazka jest próba przedstawienia nie tylko dziejów rozwoju, lecz takze spolecznego znaczenia i funkcji fotografii oraz zmian w jej odbiorze od czasu prezentacji nowego medium w 1839 roku. Nakreslone tu zostaly sylwetki wybitnych twórców, a na przykladzie znakomitych zdjec udokumentowano najwazniejsze wspólczesne style i trendy, starajac sie zarazem uchwycic wielorakie powiazania fotografii z innymi dziedzinami sztuki.
The book is indeed "small" in the sense that it covers the most important points of the history of photography - from it's beginnings to today - and is volume-wise 'short', thus it cannot include every minutiae but it does what it's supposed to do and it does it well. Concisely written, well explained and coherently structured, this "Small/Short History of Photography" gives the reader the perfect start. It answers questions satisfactorly but it also draws you into the topic and makes you want to delve further. Brauchitsch manages to deliver an academic text without being boring or turning into sensationalist trash and giving you the right amount of information that you feel like you learned something and yet know exactly how and where to look for more. Another bonus is the fact that Brauchitsch is not on some weird "WE GOTTA BASH DEM 'NEW' ACADEMICS AND LEFTIST-SUIJWIUUU!!!" but fair and adequately critical when necessary while being fair to the complexity of photographers during colonial periods.
I can recommend this to anyone interested in the history of photography. But you should know at least medium level German. ;)
