Gone Girl fans looking for something with more heart will find it here: this is a psychological thriller anchored in guilt and grief rather than pure gamesmanship, though it has its own gut-punch twists. What stayed with me was the scene on the boat, when twelve-year-old Luca forces his father to answer for himself over video call, and Ally has to stand back and let a kid do what none of the adults around him managed. Ally isn’t a manipulator like Amy Dunne, she’s someone trying to untangle her own unreliable memory while everyone around her falls apart, and that makes her one of the more human narrators I’ve read in this genre in a while.

I could not put this down. Two kids describing the same murder before it even happens?? The way Ally slowly realizes she’s the one connecting their stories gave me chills. Genuinely one of the smartest thriller premises I’ve read this year.
