He graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in English Creative Writing. He worked for a year as a substitute teacher and worked in the financial services field for seven years while writing in his spare time.
I have only been leaving starred reviews recently and not taking the time to write an actual review. This story however I wanted to explain why I only gave it three stars. About two thirds of the way through the first book the story was progressing in such a generic way that it reminded me of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. So much so that I kept expecting a revelation that the characters in the story were actually being played by real-life modern people . The small bands of "adventurers" keep going through the same trials . They also use transportation spells to get to and from their Guildhall's to the areas that they fight. All of the generic races are representative , good elves, dark elves, gnomes, trolls, etc. Period. They also have healers that cast healing spells during battle and can resurrect dead combatants. Like I said almost exactly like a role-playing game online. Because epic fantasy stories generally start out slowly I try not to judge them by the content of only the first book. So I continued reading the second book and eventually there was a bit more storyline added to the nonstop fighting and adventuring. After completing the first three books in this box set I am slightly invested in the characters and so I will probably continue and finish the series. However this epic fantasy series is certainly not groundbreaking in anyway but it does have some entertainment and escapism value.
Considering I have already read book 1 (Defender) and loved it, I was pleased to see the boxset for the three books available … and nabbed it to immerse myself in Avenger and Champion.
While there were a few instances when I thought it was a bit wordy, none of that prevented me reading on. The story is gripping in a way I cannot explain. Yes, so many of the elements present have been used elsewhere (elves, trolls, gods, realms, battles and so forth) and yet the flow of these tales keep me entertained. Perhaps it is the dynamics between Cyrus and Vara, maybe it’s the succinct use of magic, or maybe Alaric’s secrets simply have to be discovered; whatever it is, the Sanctuary series is highly entertaining.
I will be back for the rest of this series and look forward to it!
Engaging characters with interesting battles and motivations for what they do in Sanctuary. A captivating storyline that kept me engaged through all three volumes. Fortin the Rock Giant is a hoot! Definitely worth a look for sword and sorcery fans.
I wish there were more books in this series. I was fascinated by the characters almost immediately and I am actively enjoying this read. I am very pleased!
Absolutely awesome!! I was not expecting the books to be so good! The author didn't make the time going from town to town long and drawn out which I always cringe at. He did keep you guessing about parts (no spoilers here) and I loved that there were actual guilds in the book. Of course, I have to read the rest in the series now!!
Oh yea, this is a mega series. It revolves around a young adventurer, Cyrus Davidon. Cyrus becomes the General of the Sanctuary forces and leads them to many victories.
This is a different story than what I'm used to immersing myself in. The first hour or so was hard to really get into but after that, I read with a fervor.
I have read all 10 books in this series so far. I have enjoyed every single one. I have stayed up wayyy too late several nights because I didn't want to put the books down.

I have added the name Robert J. Crane to the list of my most favorite authors. And the Sanctuary Series to the list of must read series.
The characters resonate with me. From Cyrus to Vara to Olledan and so forth I developed a bond with them that will last forever. They are on a short list like Dorothy and Atreyu and some other characters who never leave my mind. They have a forever home in my head.
I luved the storyline. It offered everything I want to see in a fantasy series. Magic, wizards, adventure, continuity and sterling characters both good and evil and most of all fabulous creatures that delight me, from magical horse's and dragons to wendigoes. I luv seeing them come to life in these books.
I realy liked the romance slowly growing between Cyrus and Vara; one mortal human and the other an elf. Will it work out? I can't wait to find out. I'm going directly to the 4th book in the series.

WONDERFUL EPIC SERIES THAT KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT!
Author, Robert J. Crane, has done a masterful job creating a world full of characters that leap off the page and leave you wanting more. The characters are well developed and each will remind you of someone you know.
Full of adventure and drama, The Sanctuary adventurers are a cut above other guilds due to their loyalty and honor and their ability to stand for the poor and helpless.
Crane has blended action, adventure, mystery, magic, suspense, even a little romance into a wonderfully rich tale of heroes conquering evil and going on through impossible odds to triumph. You will be able to see everything in your mind's eye.
If you like paranormal, epic reads, this series is for you. I gave The first 3 books a 5 star rating because it was a great story that engaged my mind on every level. I got to adventure with some amazing characters that I came to love and will continue to enjoy to the end.
I am happy to recommend the first trilogy to all fantasy readers, young and old. KUDOS Mr. Crane on a tale well begun....on to the rest of the story...see you there!
'this was a great book to read.. very entertaining. it had words i didnt know and had to look up so was educational great amount of action and adventure.. small amount of romance (that didnt take over and ruin the storyline). spoliers (no sex tho its kinda hinted at and refered to) which is great cos its not all about the sex!!! im really excited to know more about what happens next. also it was great having a small bit of prologue that i kept in mind then entire book which kept me guessing (wrongly i have to add) about the ending. i thought this book was only a trilogy so wasnt prepared to read more in the series, however saying that it left the story in a good place as to allow me to be fullfilled enought that i dont NEEED to read more if i dont wish to. [I prefer trilogys, any longer and its too much]. it took me a while to ready only as i am a busy person and have little time to read but it was hard for me to put this book down.
Okay, so I'm gonna write this review a bit differently than...well, pretty much every other review on this site.
A little bit of warning though: if you don't play the Madden football games (or aren't familiar with them), this might be a bit hard to follow.
Let's pretend that Robert J. Crane (the author) is a college football player. He wasn't a big star. He wasn't even a starter. Nor did he receive a scholarship to college to play the sport. He was a walk on when he first arrived at school.
Crane kinda drifted through his first couple of years. He kept the bench warm before getting a shot to play on special teams as a Junior. During his Senior year, he got in at his regular position and even started a couple of games when the guy he was the back up for went down with an injury.
Then, one day, his college career came to an end. The NFL draft was coming up. He thought he might have a chance to play in the NFL. So he trained, watched film, and learned more from his coaches.
Draft weekend came along. He wasn't selected by anyone. But, much to his surprise, one team gave him a phone call after the draft was over. They offered him a chance to try out for them. He accepted.
Crane showed up at training camp. He put in the work, learned the playbook, stayed late to train more. He impressed the coaching staff in the preseason games, and when cutdown day came, his name wasn't among those being released. He'd made the team.
And even more, when the new Madden game was released, he was included on his team's roster.
*A little aside here: this is where I rate the books in this trio*
As an undrafted free agent in the NFL, you're not gonna be expected of much. Not many truly believe you'll become a starter, let alone a star player.
Crane's player rating for his first season (on Madden) was pretty dismal. He had an overall score of 46. Most of his time that season was spent on the bench. The few times he did get into a game, it was as a special teams player.
But after the season was over, Crane put in more work. That first taste of being a professional football player wasn't good enough for him. He studied game film. He learned from coaches and veterans. He trained with the strength and conditioning staff. He studied the playbook even more. He attended all of the meetings and practices.
By the start of his second season, Crane had improved. He wasn't just a bench-riding special teamer anymore. He was getting into games as a back up at his position. And his improvement was reflected on the new Madden game. His new rating was moved up to 68, a jump of 22 points.
Well, I'm getting tired of writing this, so I'll cut to the chase. In his third season, Crane's Madden rating jumped again. Nothing as drastic as 22 points again, but he'd made it up a good, solid 74.
In other words, or, for those who don't follow the Madden idea at all, the first book was pretty below average. The second was a vast improvement. And the third was better still. I, for one, look forward to reading the rest of the series sometime.
I tried every evening to delve into the first book and find beauty in it. I failed. The characters have no purpose....they just go from fight to fight because they were told to go. There is an attempt to create political reasons why they have to raid and slaughter, but, in the end, it's just a "B" rated action movie jumping from fight scene to fight scene with no transitions or storytelling wedged in between the battles.
It is written entirely in the passive voice and I find it infuriating. I find myself revising each paragraph as I read to remove redundancy, overt "telling" where "showing" was easily possible.
Deep down I'm hoping that the poor quality of the writing is due to the inability of the writer, editor(s), and publisher; but, I fear that books like this exist because there is a market for it. Heck, I might be willing to read a mindless hack-n-slash, if it were written decently well. But this book is pedantic and juvenile. I found it entirely unreadable and finally had to stop at page 147. I sincerely tried to complete it, but life is short and it was wasted time for me.

I'm going directly to the 4th book in the series. Best of all they are all free to read in Kindle Unlimited. The best bargain online. Highly recommended.
When I started reading book 1, I was thinking the characters shallow and puerile. It didn't take long, however, to have difficulty putting the book down. It's a Bildungsroman in its own way - showing the growing emotional maturity of Cyrus as he gains renown as a warrior. Of course, he falls deeply in love with a woman warrior-elf who's adept with her sword but in her fear of being emotionally betrayed adopts a scathing, hands-off manner with him. Overall, there are dragons, elves, trolls and druids that make up the supporting cast in addition to the normal complement of humans and lots of battles. It may still be puerile, but I really enjoyed the read, and may just pick up the continuing novels in the series.
An ad for Amazon Kindle Unlimited lured me into reading "Defender", so I read it during my free trial. The ad described the Sanctuary series as "The Hobbit meets Game of Thrones". Wow! Those are two of my favorite fantasy stories! So I'm thinking here's a top-tier fantasy author, up there with Tolkien and George R.R. Martin! But, no, based on this book I would not make that comparison. But I liked the "Defender" novel, especially in the last quarter or so where more of the characters inner feelings come out. Before that point, it's more like a video game where defeating the next monster is what you have to look forward to. The fantasy setting relies heavily on classic D&D humanoids and monsters, similar to R.A.Salvatore's Forgotten Realms tales.
I was not too impressed when I started the first book. For me the story lacked description and I just could not properly get into it. There were also a couple too many fights for my taste. However, something kept me reading.
By the second book I was taken by the tragic love story of Cyrus (main character) and Vara and the author has started to paint a better picture of the world the story plays in.
By the third book I was taken. The story had taken such curious paths and grown that I just could not stop reading.
If you like fantasy this is a series worth reading.
I enjoyed the books, light and easy to read. However, the true test is if I'm willing to spend money to read the rest of the story (No, I'm not Paul Harvey!). At this point I'm not.
The story read like a D&D Campaign that a friendly DM developed. The hero is constantly being healed and the majority of characters Resurrected. How can you be a Bad Ass if there is no real risk of permanent harm?
Alric though, I might have to buy the books to see if my hunches are correct about him. The question is; does the curiosity open the wallet?
Cyrus Davidon would find out what Sanctuary was to him and what it gave to him and his comrades as he joined it to get what he wanted in life. One was a sword the other a fair elven he hoped would eventually capitulate with him in life. The adventures that were had in these first three books tells of Cyrus’s journey to being in command of an army and possibly getting or losing the girl. I just hope the other books in this series keeps me hoping for a better life for him.
This book was fantastic well written, and I will miss it as because the world of this book became the world. I was living in day after day, intermingled with my work. When the book 1st was opened and I read this first few pages, I thought I will never get as deep in this one as I did the last story I read. I am one for reading epic normal novels, as a fast reader, a book of 100 pages or less is nothing but a commercial. This book is worthy of investing in.
This was the most amazing epic fantasy book I have ever read. Well writ...well planned ...it had me turning pages to the very last pages and even then...it left me desiring more
This was the most epic fantasy book I have ever read... well writ...well planned. It had me turning pages to the very last pages and even then....it left me desiring more. Looking to read more of J cranes works.
An epic novel and I loves all there books in this bundle. The characters were just so alive and I was at my computer being a part of the adventures. The story drew me in and I just couldn't wait to see what would happen next and when the last word was read I wasn't ready for it to end. There are to many unanswered questions. I have to read the next book to find out what happens next. Why and how are Sanctuary destroyed? What happened to everyone?
Five stars for the action, the detail, and the emotions in the book. I found it hard to keep up with at times and had to reread passages to remember. You have a diary being read from but it leaves you with more questions even after going thru the story from a different view. Cyrus and Vara's love story with quest for treasure, hope, power, and more. Very excited to continue the series with book 4.
I highly recommend getting this box set. It was great to have all 3 ebooks ready. I guess my only complaint is not with the books themselves but how to review your notes, as I take notes when I read, it’s a hassle to scroll through notes of previous book to get to current book. Regardless the first 3 books were a great adventure and the characters were amazing, you should definitely read this series.
I did enjoy reading these books, but in many ways I felt I was reading a book version of an online role playing game like Warcraft. There were different classes and races, each with unique skills. You could also go back to challenge "bosses" so you could get more loot. The books were reasonably well written and creative enough so that it wasn't a direct rip-off of one specific game but the general feeling was for an ORPG brought to a book.
I had saved this series on my kindle at least a year ago based on the reviews I had read. Did not know much about it, so it kept getting set aside when it came time to choose a book. Now I am so sorry I did not start it sooner. What a great and original story. The characters are amazing, and their sarcasm and wit are so much fun. Hard to put down, and looking forward to starting book number four!
