A slow, interesting, 45 minute story told in 3 hours.

3.5 stars. Definitely a podcast more than a novel. The topic/subject is absolutely fascinating but the execution is lacking. Several threads are left open and how can this guy still be swindling the world? I looked up his books and they are all still available and have really good reviews but apparently he does not (allegedly) write things that are really true? Unsatisfying the way it abruptly ends with no resolution. Wish lawyers or law enforcement would have been brought in more (they have one FBI who says no way was this guy there).

5 stars. Listened to this via Audible 🎧
I really, really liked it. It was slow at first, but it was super interesting. I cannot believe this man got away with making stuff up for so long! Insane. I guess if you’re charismatic enough, you can get away with anything. I had no idea where this was going at first (I really thought it was about the FBI people who talked to serial killers ala the TV show), but I loved the “twist” it took. This is the kind of article that you’d hear on NPR - so if that’s not your thing, then this short audiobook isn’t for you.

Not even close to what I was expecting. If you are a "True Crime" aficionado, this one might be as appealing as it would be for someone with a more casual reading/listening interest. It does not explore the mind of a serial killer. Instead, this podcast audio presentation follows the career of Paul Harrison, who wrote books about his time as Britain's #1 criminal profiler. He also wrote books about his favorite soccer team, Carlisle United. When a former drinking buddy recognized him on the lecture circuit, the real mystery begins to unravel, and Harrison's past catches up with him.
The book comes with a trigger warning about descriptions of serial killers, language, and reports about child abuse. It also has a great sense of humor, twists and turns, and an exploration of how we see what we expect to see.

This is a compilation of episodes of a podcast. As a true crime fan and serial killer junkie, this was really interesting especially considering Ive heard of some of these books and planned to read them. It’s a very niche deep dive. The story here reminds me of Catch Me If You Can, but if Frank Abagnale was a true crime author instead. Most of the episodes focused on different ‘eras’ of Paul Harrison’s life and authorship, and there was a snippet at the end discussing how he got away with it for so long and who else bears the responsibility for it. I enjoyed the backstory but would have liked if additional episodes were included diving into that last philosophical concept more as well.

An interesting story about a man who has written books on an extraordinarily wide range of subjects – from true crime and Nessie to football clubs – and who also gives talks about his supposed one-to-one encounters with some of the most notorious serial killers in the UK and US.
But something doesn’t quite ring true for one member of his audience. He starts digging, and in doing so opens a can of worms that nobody quite expected.
It’s an intriguing premise and there are some fascinating twists as the story unfolds.
Interesting and certainly unusual, but perhaps not quite as tightly told or conclusive as I’d hoped.

This was a WILD ride of a story! How has this guy gotten away with being in the limelight, yet lying so damn much for decades? I want to know if and what is going to happen to him now. Likely nothing, it floors me how people can lie/cheat/steal for decades and even when the truth comes out......no repercussions at all. It's rather disgusting.

The story was ok. It would have been more impactful several years ago. In this day in age there are so many self-proclaimed "experts" that have no knowledge or credentials and there is so much "news" generated without fact-checking that his story is not unique and, therefore, not very intriguing.

This is a wild story, it's a bit over dramatised for someone committing fraud but a fine story all the same. No harm done.

This was such an insightful listen! I was constantly thinking and pondering and also realising that there are really people out there that lives to be a scammer and believe there own lies.

Interesting in the beginning, got a little boring (for me) when they started talking about football (soccer), then became more interesting again near the end.

More of a 3.5
This was interesting investigation into a man who carried out an elaborate hoax, portraying himself as a criminal profiler.

I found this to be pretty interesting and informative. It probably could have been shortened, but I didn't know any of this information so I am glad to have heard it all.
