Problems in Solid State Physics with Solutions

Rate this book
This book is an updated collection of more than 370 problems (70+ new) with detailed solutions worked out by the author, covering a wide range of subjects in solid state physics for both undergraduate and graduate students. The original Chapter 26 Electron-Phonon Interaction has been split into three chapters with new problems Chapter 26 Electron-Phonon Interaction, Chapter 27 Green's Functions at Zero Temperature, and Chapter 28 Green's Functions at Finite Temperatures. The original Chapter 30 Superconductivity has been split into three new chapters with new problems Chapter 33 Phenomenological Theories of Superconductivity, Chapter 34 BCS Theory of Superconductivity, and Chapter 35 Strong-Coupling Theory of Superconductivity. A new chapter, Chapter 32 Fermi Liquid Theory, has been added; it contains 33 problems that cover many subjects in Fermi liquid theory.

The problems in this book can be used as homework assignments in introductory or advanced courses on solid state physics. It can also serve as a reference book for solving typical problems and grasping mathematical techniques in solid state physics. In practice, it is more fascinating and rewarding to learn a new idea or technique through solving challenging problems rather than through reading only. In this respect, the book is not just a plain collection of problems; it also presents a large number of problem-solving ideas and procedures, some of which are valuable to practitioners in condensed matter physics.
