This was quite a fun ride, even now after having just finished it-- I feel totally wind-blown. The Devil in the Detail was my first experience reading a crime/mystery novel, and all I can say is, its excellent, and a five star read for me. I enjoyed the characters, the dark feel of each scene, the realistic dialog, and some of the humor that balanced out the intensity-- all of which kept me hooked from the beginning. It's a thriller, yet told in a way that resembles a modern-day Sherlock Holmes mystery. This was fast-paced, quick read that'll stick with me for a while.

I met Mr. Nicholls on my publisher's website, WEbook.com and, despite his misguided views on the Spiderman Reboot (you don't just get to remake a movie twelve years later when the original was fine and had Kirsten Dunst in a wet t-shirt)we hit it off. So when he published his debut novella, I was eager to check it out. Ponied up the cash. Sat back and consumed it over the course of about two hours.
There are two important things to note about the Devil In The Details: 1. It's novella. And it's not a serialized novel, either, as others (FinNilPro included) are fond of doing nowadays. So you can expect a set beginning, middle and end. Also, you have to take the character development for what could be accomplished in its short length. This isn't Les Miserables. 2. Nicholls is British, which means the language and formatting are done to the British standards rather than American, which means they're all clearly backward and wrong. Neither of these are listed as pros or cons, but simply so the reader knows what they're getting their hands on.
Now to the actual review:
As I said I read this in a single sitting. Burning through the digital pages at a good pace. The writing is solid, astonishingly so for a self-published debut work. The plot is engaging and the end is absolutely brutal in all the best possible ways. There's a bit of the old school of storytelling here. No flashy mirror work that has become the standard for mysteries and thrillers. Simply an interesting story, well told. It reminded me a great deal of John D MacDonald's storytelling style (if he were misguidedly British). Or, perhaps, the better works of Edgar Rice Burroughs (I happen to adore ALL of his works, but I can understand his critics points, as well).
So if you've got a few hours to waste (like, maybe, on a plane to the New World) I'd recommend it highly. Not necessarily as the finest literary cannon ever penned (who would want to read it if it was?) but as a solid first entry in a career I'll be following with great interest (unlike the new Spiderman series)...

This is a great story. Full of drama and tension, it was a quick read for me, purely because I couldn't put it down!

I will warn readers that there are some rather gruesome scenes, but these have not been overdone, and the plot line and characters are strong enough to take them. In fact, overall, I thought this was a well written/balanced story and I know that the characters will stay in my mind for quite some time.

I recommend 'The Devil In The Detail' to anyone who enjoys crime thrillers.

Quite underwhelming

I was going to give it a respectable 3.5 stars, believe it or not. But then the final sequence happened. To have a guy not give up the entire story, only to finish by hanging himself in some half-assed corruption attempt ending? That alone dropped a star and a half off the rating. Adam Nicholls, work on your endings.

Great storyline - no hanging around, straight in and kept me hooked to the end. Got to know the characters quickly and with ease. I love a book that takes me on a journey without beating around the bush, this book did just that, to the point and gripping. Will look out for others from this budding New author.
