The Inheritance

Rate this book
Melody’s work as a hospice nurse both gives her life purpose and rips her heart out when her patients die. Her latest client left her his lakeside home. After years of living in foster homes, Melody seizes the opportunity for a real home.

Her happy residence comes to an abrupt halt when her benefactor’s missing nephew, Levi, shows up. A bomb shattered his leg and life, which left him in need of a safe place to figure out the rest of his life. The will leaves the house to both of them, but only if they cohabit for a year. Otherwise, the house goes to a third party.

Melody detests Levi for never writing or visiting his dying uncle. Levi considers Melody little more than a gold digger similar to his ex-wife. There’s no way he’ll let her have his inheritance.

Morgan K Wyatt, raised on a steady diet of superheroes, believed she could fly at a very young age. After using trees, barn lofts, sliding boards, and even a second story window as launch pads, she found her flying skills were limited to fast and downward. By the age of nine, her dreams to be a superhero needed some modifications, which caused her to turn to writing and horseback riding as alternatives to flying.

At the age of twenty, she had another chance at superhero greatness as being one of the few female soldiers trained for combat. The fact that women will be able to serve in combat soon indicates that all the witnesses to the grenade incident have retired. The grenade incident didn’t prevent her two sons or daughter-in-law from enlisting in the service. Having different last names probably helped.

Morgan recently retired from teaching special needs students to write fulltime, instead of in the wee hours of the night. With the help of her helpful husband and loyal hound, she creates characters who often grab plot lines and run with them. As for flying, she prefers the airlines now.

Vikki’s Musings

When I accepted The Inheritance from the author, via Goddess Fish Promotions for an honest review, I did not realize it was by an author I was already familiar with. I had read some of her Cougar series and thoroughly enjoyed them. When I read the book description for this book, it appealed to me because I always enjoy military romances. The Inheritance is an enjoyable read that follows a budding romance between a wounded warrior and a hospice nurse.

Melody Gibbons was abandoned by her mother as a very young child, was shuffled from one foster home to another as she grew to adulthood. As an adult, she lives a quiet, withdrawn life as a hospice nurse. When she finds out she has inherited half of the property of one of her hospice patients, she is thrilled. The only problem is: the other half owner is Roy McDaniel’s nephew, a man who couldn’t even be bothered to come see his dying uncle.

Levi McDaniels has returned from the war zones, severely wounded in body and soul. What woman would ever want a man with only one leg? If that was not bad enough, he finds out his wife only married him for his enlistment bonus. When he receives word of his inheritance, and finds out about the hospice nurse inheriting as well, he is determined to contest and keep the gold-digger from inheriting. A woman he is sure is just like his unfaithful, money hungry soon to be ex-wife.

When the will is read, it clearly states that Melody and Levi must live in the house together for one year before either can sell their interest in the dwelling and land. Can two wounded souls learn to live together, and find a love beyond what either of them ever imagined?

The Inheritance is a well-written story that gives the reader clear insight into the workings of Melody’s mind and a glimpse of Levi’s as well. Their goals, motivations and conflict are very clear. Their romance is tender and sweet. I loved the dog, Charmer, and he lightened the sad story of the characters’ lives. Those light-hearted moments had me chuckling at Charmer’s antics.

Much of the book is written through Melody’s introspection and shows how she lives on a daily basis, taking care of patients in the last stages of their illnesses. Most of it is very sad to say the least. In fact, Melody’s character has a very sad life, no wonder she has such low self-esteem. If ever a heroine deserves a “happily ever after,” it’s Melody.

I can see that Ms. Wyatt did a great deal of research for the book and it really shows what a hospice nurse has to deal with every day. Some of the scenes between Melody and her patients are quite touching, if heart-breaking. They had me growing teary-eyed a couple of times.

However, this is somewhat of a slow moving book. At times, I became a bit anxious to get on with the romance. The couple does not have a lot of interaction, since most of the book is narrative. There is very little time spent getting to know one another. Hence, I struggled with them as a couple. It kept me from becoming fully vested in the love story.
Nonetheless, the book does have a satisfying ending, even though a few questions remained unanswered, especially the part about Levi’s wife. If you enjoy a slowly developing, sweet romance with two characters that have wounded hearts, each of them trying to move forward into the light, then you will enjoy The Inheritance. Happy reading!

Two people scarred by their pasts are brought together through the machinations of a cantankerous old man from beyond the grave in this sweet and sentimental romance that touches on a few topical issues too. Ms. Wyatt nicely balances all this amongst two very likable and realistic characters with the help of an endearing cast of secondary characters, including Charmer the dog who does his best to help two bitter people find their HEA.

Melody is a hospice nurse who finds it easy to connect to her patients but hard to form a bond with others after a childhood full of numerous uncaring foster parents. Her own mother even set her up for heartache through broken promises and tarnished dreams that have left Melody doubting herself when it comes to love. She always longed for a family, and with her recent patient offering a place in his home, she thought she'd finally found one. With his death she's once again feeling lost but with his nephew coming to stay Melody will once again find herself nursing another as their mutually bruised hearts can only be healed through their burgeoning relationship and trust. Melody was a strong-willed woman with very low self-esteem who was easy to relate to. Though she wanted to be angry at Levi for not coming home sooner her kind heart wouldn't allow her to punish him more than he's punishing himself. She was a woman deserving of love who wore her heart on her sleeve waiting for her Prince Charming.

Levi had a rough upbringing too until he ended up at his uncle's house. There he found a sense of belonging until a woman's lies had him walking away in anger. Time in the military, and the loss of his leg, were an eye opening experience that left him with regrets but trying to move on with the changes his body's undergone. A duplicitous woman, and his own low self-esteem, have left him a bit cold and untrusting though. Spending time with Melody, per his uncle's will, shows him a woman he can finally count on, but will he let his own self-esteem issues keep him from happiness or will his sensual battle with Melody end in victory? Levi's been through a lot in his life so his initial standoffishness was understandable. His playful yet subtle flirtations towards Melody endeared him to me though and had me rooting for him as his impressions of himself grew through Melody's responses to his sensual onslaught. He might've been mired in pity at the start of the story but quickly gained confidence through his interactions with Melody.

With its appealing characters and their flirty and heartfelt interactions teeming with sexual tension I found myself easily immersed in this romantic tale of self-acceptance and finding love in the unlikeliest of places. The lead characters are strong-willed but traverse a slow journey to HEA because of deep-seated trust issues that left me aching for them both. Small town living, with all its inherent colorful denizens, is charmingly depicted and helped push the main couple together. Topical issues dealing with problems in the foster care system, issues of returning veterans, along with animal adoption are seamlessly incorporated into this tale to bind the main couple together even more. Overall it makes for a sweet and heartwarming tale that starts off a bit slowly but quickly captivates readers.

~~~~~~~~~~Dee's ★★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~
Melody is a hospice nurse whose childhood consisted of abandonment issues and a series of foster homes. As a result, her low self esteem plus her non-belief in love and happy endings left her with a sad, lonely life. Levi is a wounded warrior dealing not only with his self image of being only half a man but also reeling from the betrayal by his wife. He believes women only use men for greedy, controlling purposes so he decides to never open his heart again. His uncle leaves his property to both these damaged people with the stipulation they must live together in the house one year before they can sell it and split the proceeds. The struggles and challenges of these two souls as their cold hearts warm, grow and blossom creates a beautiful and loving story. Very enjoyable and entertaining.
~~~~~~~~~~Sharlene's ★★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~

Melody and Levi are 2 lost souls united by the death of someone they both loved. Now they are sharing the house their loved one left to both of them and trying to figure out what is going on between them. There seemed to be a great deal of focus on Melody's past care in foster homes. Although this was a huge part of her past and a big reason for her being the person she currently is, IMO that could have been cut down a little. There was a focus on Levi's past as well but it didn't seem to overwhelm the story as much as Melody's did. This reminiscing over their pasts slows the pace of the story down a bit. However, the writing is good, easy to understand and follow. This also helps to round out the characters quite a bit as well. I would have liked to have seen more time spent together between Melody and Levi. There's not much discussion in the book but mostly narrative. If you don't mind that, then maybe the rehashing the past won't bother you as much. I loved the small town setting. Between the library and the diner, I felt right at home. The author did an excellent job of covering the hospice workers' details. Obviously some research or experience went on there. There is a lot of romance and passion here but no sex scenes. Still the love is evident between these two characters.

This can be read as a stand alone and does have an HEA.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review

Melody works as a hospice nurse. It is not an easy job, but one she loves. She came from the foster care system and has never really felt accepted. She thinks she has flaws that make her unattractive to men . Throughout her life she has never felt loved or wanted by anyone. . She looks in a mirror and sees an overweight and lonely woman. . Because of these flaws she perceives that she has, she has become insecure .

Levi is a strong determined, no nonsense kind of man. While serving in the military , Levi lost a leg. Now that he is back home as a wounded soldier, he feels that he has nothing to offer a woman. He has returned home an angry man who must deal with a divorce that leaves him bitter and cold.

The story centers around these two different and dynamic characters and how they have to deal with living together in a home that Levi's uncle has left them. It is a great read about two people finding their self worth while opening their hearts to each other. Will Uncle Roy's greatest regret change their life? Will two people who don't trust each other be able to live in the same house?

The author does a great job of exploring the regrets people have, the hope of acceptance and finding love when you don't expect it. Morgan has given us characters that make us cry through their struggles and feel the pain they have suffered over the years. It is a story that will leave you with an emotional journey that shows you what forgiveness and hope can do to change your self esteem. I loved the way the story flowed with a depth of raw emotions and the vulnerablebility the characters experienced.

The Inheritance is the first book I have read by Morgan K. Wyatt but it will not be the last. Thank you for writing such a beautiful story and introducing me to your incredible writing style.

4/5 (Very Good)

I received a copy of this book from Xpress Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This story was sweet and depressing. There were ups and downs throughout the story, with a pretty big downer as the beginning, the loss of Jack, Kate’s twin brother. Kate came back from her year in London to mourn and bury her brother. She reconnects with her best friend and ex-lover, Noah. There are definitely feelings still there but can they get back their history and past to move forward?
This story was a fairly quick read but an intriguing read at the same time. The story line flowed incredibly well and it was easy to keep up with what was going on. I’d say that the characters were developed well and the history of the characters were explained well enough to not need more of a back story. There is a cloud of mystery that surrounds a few of the characters and I definitely hope that the author expands on those characters in future books.
I appreciate that the author takes the time to express the grief that all parties are feeling towards the loss of Jack. The feelings are expressed well and seem to be relayed in a natural way with a natural feeling of healing and for some, the lack there of. I appreciated the way that she wrote Jared’s character in the book and the feelings he was dealing with after being in the car with Jack when he died. Rather than portraying him to be a “bad” person as she very well could have done, she made him a real person with real emotions unlike other books I have read.
This was an all-around good read and I think it would be a good story for you to pick up and read!

Such a great, sweet story.

Melody and Levi can't seem to get out of their own way. Melody's past has taught her that the only person that she can rely on is herself and that she just has to sit back and take the blows that life has dealt her. And Levi has come back a man broken in body, mind, and soul. But what does it take to trust someone and possibly come to love them? You certainly find out in the story. With the help of an adorably cranky mutt named Charmer.

The characters are very well-developed and their reactions to their situation are natural given their past. Nothing ever seemed forced with the relationship at all. The supporting characters all helped move the story forward and give it a real sense of love and family. Even Roy, despite him being gone, and Charmer have their moments.

The small town setting is perfect for this story. It couldn't take place in the city because the small town feel that you get at the diner, at the animal shelter, at the construction site, etc. all give the feeling of support and of being a family.

Maybe I just have an affection for seemingly hopeless cases like Melody (I would have taken Charmer too to be honest LOL) but I truly loved that cantankerous mutt and his new owner. Truly sweet and heartfelt romance.

This was a sweet romance built from the foundation of misconceptions. Both Melody and Levi think the worst of each other and their perception is based on the love they felt for Roy. Both characters are wounded souls struggling for acceptance and love. This was a well written well thought out storyline that flowed easily and engaged your emotions. Melody's job was an interesting play by the author to highlight her reluctance to get close to anyone. The light touch and dignity that was given to Melody's patients clearly showed the authors attempt to broach this tough subject with care. The interactions between the characters were easy to follow, several were very amusing and very realistic. The author did a great job of highlighting some of the struggles returning veterans experience when they get back state side. Charmer was an important character and a great therapist to both characters. The reference to adopting shelter animals and incorporating the message in a major story event shows that the author has compassion and routes for the underdog. This was a great story filled with strong values and a pleasant read.

Morgan Wyatt is a new author for me and I'm glad that she was introduced to me. This was a good solid story. This was a sweet romance (no sexy scenes)and a pretty quick read. Took about a half day.

Melody is a sweet girl and I couldn't help but fall in love with Levi. I always love a book with "me sized" heroine in a story. This book had me smiling and even shed a few tears. The story was believable and heartwarming.

The storyline was good, the dialogue was engaging and the description to details were done well. This was written as a mutli pov.

All in all, a good read.

This was a relatively quick read, the premise hooked my attention and the story was sweet. I loved the characters, Melody was sassy although insecure, Levi had a bit of a chip on his shoulder, but knew what he wanted and went for it. Mary and the Charmer added fun and warmth to the story while Roy's actions really propelled the story. Melody's job as a hospice nurse and the scenes where she's at work tugged at my heart and those experiences really helped to develop the plot. The story had a few twists and turns that kept your attention and the romance was focused on the romance, not sex. I think this would be a great read for the romance readers who like a milder story. Overall, this was an enjoyable read.

I received a copy of an ebook in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book was very emotional. It had me crying, laughing, and being grateful for my life with my family and husband. Levi and Melody are very strong likable characters.

Melody has trust and self esteem issues. She was in foster care. Levi lost his parents and was sent to live with his Uncle Roy. This is a believable story. Uncle Roy set up his will the way he did on purpose. There are 2 reasons, but you will need to find out by reading this book.

My favorite part of the book was the end of it. It was very romantic.

The Inheritance is the first book that I have read from Morgan K. Wyatt and I enjoyed it immensely. The two main characters, Melody and Levi, come together through a series of unfortunate events while they are dealing with their own issues. They learn to appreciate what the other has to offer, transforming this story into a great romantic comedy. There are many amusing moments as the characters are funny and sassy, especially towards each other. This story is much very alive and makes you feel as though you are right there with them. With the elements of love, friendship and life, it has all of the makings of a great book.

This novella is wonderful for anyone that is looking for an excellent short read. It’s well-written and the author does not disappoint.

This was an emotional read but it made me smile at times. I have not had the pleasure of reading this author before, but I am glad I did now. Melody and Levi are strong characters and very well written. You feel their emotions. I could really feel Melody's struggles with self esteem. I thought the hospice scenes were so very well written. Overall, this was a quick read with lots of romance and focus on the journey the characters are taking. Each of the characters, including Mary and the others really add something to the story. This was very believable and loved the fact that Melody was not a rich, skinny debutante and was a person who you could relate to.

I enjoyed reading The Inheritance by Morgan K. Wyatt. It is a great story of two very wounded souls learning to open their hearts and come together. Both Levi and Melody have had it rough, they have both had a life full of struggles and heartache. Morgan did a great job in character development so we empathize and feel the pain they have had in their lives. We understand the hesitation and self-doubt they each struggle with. This wasn’t a see each other and fall into the sack erotic read, it was the self-discovery, self-worth, and growth of two wounded souls who found love where they least expected it.

An emotional roller coaster and the healing journey of two exceptional characters.

Melody it's an insecure woman, with low self-esteem and trusting issues and Levi, a wounded Veteran, full of anger and pain. Both characters are complex and I highly enjoyed reading about how they began to let their walls down, but wait! That's not going to be an easy path, the road is full of pain, heartbreak, laughter, tears, love and healing.
Beautiful written, with a realistic plot, this bittersweet romance is going to have you turning pages like crazy.

Highly Recommended
