About the author

Benton began his career in a custom design t-shirt shop where he started designing his own characters. At the same time, Jim did illustrations and artwork for magazines and newspapers. People magazine named him "the most visible cartoonist in America" .

Benton also created greeting cards and worked in the magazine and publishing industry. In 1998, his SpyDogs characters became an animated series, The Secret Files of the Spy Dogs, that aired on Fox Kids. Licensing his own creations brought them widespread attention on products, such as It's Happy Bunny, The Misters, Just Jimmy and more.

Benton currently lives in Michigan, where he operates out of his own studio.

Hey! This series is super funny!!

This particular title is also good if you've recently gotten married, especially if you want to know the perspective of a middle-school-aged kid who is forced to be a bridesmaid.

Here are a couple of my favorite parts:

ON BRIDESMAID SHOES--
"We tried on a lot of shoes. We tried on some of those ones with really pointy toes that would be handy if you wanted to shish kebab something while looking elegant. We tried on some really flat ones that would be perfect if the look you were going for was a ballerina that doesn't have any other kind of shoe to wear except those blunt slippers that make you look shorter than you actually are. We tried on some of those shoes that restrain you with a lot of straps that also make it look like maybe your foot is a dangerous animal that you're concerned might escape."

ON GETTING READY FOR A WEDDING--
"By the time we were done, I have to say I did NOT understand why people get married. There is just too much work involved. I'm pretty sure that if they made divorces this complicated, more people would stay together out of pure laziness. Here's how I think the Divorce Ceremony should go:
* You have to invite all the guests that were at the wedding, and they get their wedding presents back.
* At the end of the ceremony, instead of kissing, they bite each others faces.
*Bridesmaids still have to wear gross dresses. (They make more sense here.)"

It is a very cute book and I enjoyed both the illustrations and the story. I would recomend it to Junior High Kids, but as you can see older teens (like me) may like it as well

this is the first dear dumb diary book i owned and thus i have read it probably thirty times. and yet the stinker glitter earrings drama still gets me every time.

jamie gay tracker: dreaming about angeline wiping taco sauce off her face; forgetting to be upset about falling down the stairs because angeline is standing there in a beautiful dress; angeline saying the two of them are going to be "grandmas together" because their dogs are in love. they're literally lesbian grandmas to a bunch of puppies what is there to say

Jamie and her titled view of the world are back again. This one completes one chapter in the wedding saga and doesn't seem to be as much in school as in Jamie's after school world. The usual characters are back and I must admit that there are times when I despise Isabella, the best friend more than Angeline the middle school perfect princess. We have an example of irresponsible pet ownership that is a bad lesson for impressionable younger readers.

aunt and she is a brides maid.unfortunatly she has to wear a very ugly dress.she also has

Dear Dumb Diary: Never Underestimate your Dumbness is the book number seven of this great series. It is another book of the life of the main character Jamie Keller, her best friend Isabella, and her enemy Angeline. One thing that I really like about the author Jim Benton, is that the book is in a form made real diary, so imagine you are like reading a real diary of Jamie Keller. The format, drawing of this book will really catch your attention just by looking at the first page of the book! You will find it interesting because you are reading the book or "diary" in Jamie's perspective and the way she is thinking and her interior feelings about people. This story is about Jamie's problems but specially that her aunt Carol is getting marry to a guy that is called Dan. Dan was the principal of the Jamie's school. But Dan is the uncle of Angeline! So Jamie is really frustrated about all the things she has to do related to the wedding. There are many problems related to the wedding, and with her best friend Isabella. This story teaches you that friendship is really valuable, that not all people are bad just try to meet them and give them a chance! I truly recommend you this book, you will pass a time full of laughs reading Jamie Kelly's diary.

This is the first Dear Dumb Diary I have read. I found it in the Lending Library and thought I'd give it a read.
This book took me a bit to get into. I didn't really like the beginning. Jamie's hatred of Angeline (for no reason other than her prettiness) and weird, dysfunctional friendship with Isabella (trying to push her down the stairs???) had me grimacing.
I hated how Jamie's character was so jealous and shallow all of the time. It's another middle grade book about insecure girls tearing down other girls to make themselves feel better. I think we can do better than that. I prefer books with meaningful female relationships.
However, I did like the ending. The book wraps up nicely and there is a teeny tiny glimmer of a message by the end, that (doesn't redeem the whole book, but) negates some of the awfulness in the beginning.
There were some funny bits, but I wouldn't say the whole thing was funny, mostly because there were so many times Jamie was mean out of jealousy. I did like the silly illustrations and some of the lists.
A solid two-star book for me, but the ending bumped it up to three-stars.

It's cute. I'm reading them with a girl in the special needs class when I go there for lunch. If we have time after she's done eating, we read. Someone chose this story for her, so now we are back to book 1, and will read through as much as we can. It's funny, the humour is possibly lost on her sometimes, but it's funny for me :)

Boring meaningless book. It's for teenagers so it's speaking their language. It's horrible little book that teaches teenage girls to be jealous, judgmental and extremely shallow.

This latest advent into the Dumb Diary Universe has a total of 160 pages, which is more than the sixth book, which means only ONE THING--MORE STINKER!!!! YES!!!!!! Okay, I'm calm now so let's review: Jamie has a lot on her puny little brain, and still she revels in her dumbness! Her Aunt Carol is in love with her Assistant Principal and soon to be uncle Devon. The glamorous Angeline is in love with herself as always. Even Stinker is in love--with a poodle more cutely ugly than His Beagleness Himself! Can anything get any better for us DDD disciples? Can anything get any worse for our Beloved Jamie? Yes on both counts! Keep reading this series and continue your Stinker support! THE WORLD IS COUNTING ON YOU!

This book is a very interesting book. It's "Jamie Kelly's" diary where she keeps all of her secrets and all the bad stuff she says about people, gossip and rumors. She writes everything she has in her mind down on the book. But of course 'Jamie Kelly' isn't a real person she is just a made up character by Jim Benton. I gave this book a 4 star rating because i thought it was very funny and it's not really one of my favorite books that i would read all of the time, but a book that i would pick up and read if i am bored and have nothing else to read. I think everyone who likes to read funny/interesting books should read this book but if you don't like reading short stories than i think you should look for another book.

Beautiful way of showing that things can definitely go wrong, like friendships being broken, fights will happen, weddings may be (almost) ruined, and, most importantly, that even the person that may seem the meanest is actually a really good person. This book discusses change in a beautiful and hilarious way, in the view of a young girl named Jamie, that wasn't popular, but dreamed to be. It shows the dream that a lot of young teens may have in this world, to be popular, and with the "in" crowd. But, I really hope that Jamie learns that popularity doesn't matter, and that she is a funny, beautiful, amazing girl in her own way. If you're going through something with change, definitely read this book, because it will introduce humor into that change, and humor can fix almost anything.

"If you are my parents, then YES, i know that i am not allowed to call people dumb and dummy-heads and dumb-face and dumbwad, and all that." (Jamie Kelly, 1) As you can see this book is a super funny and realistic book about a teenage girl dealing with drama school and boys. The book "Dear dumb diary" took place mainly at Jamie's house and also at school. This was very fun book to read because of the attitude Jamie has. The main character in the book is Jamie Kelly, she struggles a lot at school and also has a lot of drama with another girl at school named Angeline. She also has to worry about a stressful wedding that she doesn't want to go too. I would for sure recommend this book to all of my friends because it is a super easy and fun book to read

My husband never reads, but he caught me reading a page of Dear Dumb Diary where Jamie Kelly is talking about how her dog Stinker really smells. To help the reader understand how bad her dog smells she included a drawing of Stinker with arrows pointing to all of his smelliness. For example: Purtrid nostril aroma, ear odor, eye stink, reeking back syndrome, diseased tummy fragrance, and so forth. My husband could not stop laughing at that picture and all of the stink! I thought it was so funny to see him laughing so hard! I guess it just takes a man writing as a middle school aged girl to get another grown man to laugh his eyes out. Thanks Jim.

I love the book very funny and crazy. I believe I've read the whole series too, unless there is more...... If there is I want to read it, Dear Dumb Dairy is addictive!

Isabella is a good friend to Jamie even though she comes out as a mean person she's a real sweet heart inside to Jamie. When Jamie was having a flash back of third grade of Isabella and her. It states " She looked over and saw how how much I hated my lunch and then she did the sweetest thing you could imagine. She pulled Eddy Dooley's hair until he gave me his lunch"(133.)This is presenting that she was a sweetheart to Jamie at least, and they've been friends ever since.

In Dumb Diary fashion this book was cute. I think it appeals to girls. I own a copy and it gets checked out. I don't think it should be NYRA nominated.
Jamie's aunt and Angeline's uncle are tying the knot, but for poor Jamie, the process feels suspiciously like a noose tightening. As both families prepare for the nuptials, the journal keeper of the Dear Dumb Diary series contemplates the end of life as he knows it. Funny, candid, and wise; all the angst and cutting wit of youth.

Why should some one read this book? I think that some one should read because, the book is like a crazy middle school. I say if people like some drama then they could like this book. Now the book is about a middle school girl. She loves to write in her diary every day. But crazy things happen in her life. She dose not like middle because, this one girl is very nice and sweet and every one like her so much. This is why I think that some one should read this book.

I learned not everybody is perfect and sometimes you can be dumb, even though you don't know it.What I learned from this was that Rachel think that she is smart but actually she isn't. Once you read this book and read all about the adventures she has then it will make you think,that you are not that smart as you think you are, because really sometimes we have a dumb side too.

THIS BOOK IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HILARIOUS!!!

I've been reading dear dumb diary since the fourth grade, and I thought it was FANTASTIC! This one, I think, is the funniest one yet!

Another one from my little cousins' bookshelf. The writing is incredibly funny and the characters are great, especially because the popular girl is so much more than that and even though the owner of the diary hates her and says mean things about her you can read between the lines that the girl is actually nice.

All the Dear Dumb Diary books are really good for people from non-English-speaking countries learning the language. On the other hand I would say about it the same thing I said about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid - it's inappropriate for children under the age of eight because it teaches them that school is something really wrong and boring and some people are just bad - it's never like that!

I don't love this series but I have to admit that I remember myself being a little self centered like Jamie as a tween. I still don't get the animosity towards Angeline or why she is friends with Isabela. I think the outline of breeding dogs is a little out of line for this age group.
