Rate this book
A vivid nightmare. Two voices. The murder of her mother. All these things have Dia Swift disoriented and scared to death. Dia's life had been routine. From being home schooled to traveling the globe, her first twenty-three years were ordinary. Everything is about to change. Suddenly, she finds herself in the middle of a woods, standing in front of an old cabin. Will Dia be able to unravel the mystery of what she is and stop the dangerous man that's haunted her dream? The only living relative she has left is her Gram Spina. Gram Spina--who only hangs around long enough to speak in cryptic phrases and then disappears. Strange notes lead her to terrifying adventures of horror. Crows and a little piglet help her discover and develop powers she didn't know existed, or did she? Outerbones, a Bone Triangle, and people called Corvids become the beginning of many mysteries of maiming, mayhem, and murder.

The Bonerunners is a unique story, full of intrigue, mystery, and suspense. What a creative author this is, who conjured up magic bones! Just fantastic! I was worried it would get too scary, but it was just scary enough. But there are also moments of humor - a grandma who makes crazy nonsensical statements and an adorable tiny pig who runs around in circles and sits on shoulders. It all comes together very beautifully as the story unfolds and we don’t learn the entire story until the very end. The author did an excellent job of explaining the backstory and giving details of what the reader needed to know at precisely the right time. I became captivated by this world and the more I learned, the more I wanted to know. The descriptions were so well defined, it made the story come to life. Besides the creativity, humor, and descriptions, I also loved the close bonds formed by a tight knit group of outsiders. This story will leave you wanting more - good thing there are more books in this series!

I really enjoyed this book! I'm all for UF and this was completely awesome! Has the weirdness down pat and I love weird! This gets you from the start and its completely intriguing and has some great characters and world building.

Dia is leading a confusing existence and we get to see how she muddles through all the riddles. I really liked her. Just has you guessing and on the edge of your seat. I'm an official fan of Karen Turkal! Cant wait for more!

Magic & Mahem

The Bonerunners tells the story of a unique physical characteristic which sets a group of people apart from everyone else. These extra bones which grow on the outside of a person’s skin are just the first aspect of their difference, it only begins to tell the story of the magical powers which most often accompany them. I appreciated the action and adventure of this story, as well as the great descriptions which accompany it. The author really brings home the problem of greed and jealousy between the different classes of people.

Misunderstandings have begun the battle, but greed has fueled it until many lives have been lost. When Dia discovers everything her mother has kept secret from her, she learns there is so much more to her seemingly simple life. No longer will she be constantly moving, instead she will have her own home with a handful of amazing friends who share her fate. Great job!

The story is built around a group of people, known as Corvids, who have survived an outbreak of the bird flu and suddenly begin to grow “outerbones,” which are literally bones that grow on the outside of their bodies. The Corvids are hunted by the “bonerunners,” the evil-doers who will stop at nothing to harvest the bones to wear and possess them in order to use the bones’ special powers.

The main character, Dia, must deal with this unspeakable evil and violence with the help of a peculiar but likeable group of new friends, her grandmother, Gram Spina and the magical powers she learns she has inherited.

This book is incredibly imaginative and clever; a cross between a fairy tale and a horror story. And the author’s talent for world-building immerses the reader fully into Dia’s surroundings.

Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Not for me

Almost did not finish the story. And it just ends, period. First chapter, her mother dies and she goes shopping at a thrift store? Uh huh

An unusual premise and interesting characters, although so many that it was confusing. A few editing issues.

A 5 STAR RECOMMENDED READ!!!

This was one of the best books I have read in a long time! The book had everything I look for in a great story: interesting characters, vivid descriptions, and an engaging plot. I love fantasy stories because the only limit is the author's imagination and this story was amazing in its creativity - I have read nothing like it before! There was plenty of action to keep you on the edge of your seat - but it was full of surprises at the same time that kept me wondering what was coming next. I definitely recommend this book and I have already purchased the sequel as I can't wait to immerse myself back into this exciting fantasy world!

Well there is one thing I can honestly say about this book, there's no lack of pace and action. Something exciting and different is happening all the time the story is unfolding. As Karen's first novel it's s very good effort . The story line is entertaining and the are some really funny anecdotes and passages of dialogue mixed in with the serious drama. The tale ends with a view to an other story to come of which I'm looking forward to . A definite recommend to read.
