Not as retarded as the first... sadly.

To understand better this review you have to read what I wrote for the first episode here.

Done? Ok.

Now, that review contains much irony, but there is one big truth: I do REALLY love the first book of the series. It is so bad that it becomes memorable and hence “good”.
Sadly this second episode is much much less funny than the previous. There still are some LOL moments, but for the most part it develops in an average fantasy novel with some interesting turns and a good dose of nonsense. However it is not the funny nonsense of the first book, it’s just bland writing.
On one hand, you can perceive that Kiln is trying to create a complex living world, and in this aspect he is better than many other "pulp" fantasy authors. He also likes to kill his characters, so there is a bit of unpredictability in the story (although sometimes you will be like “Why did he tell me all that story if that character was going to die in such a stupid way??” see for example ). On the other, “Guardian” is not good enough to be considered a “serious” good book and is not bad enough to become a “retarded” good book,

BUT

I’ll give it two stars and not just one because its first sentence is HANDS DOWN the most memorable opening line in Fantasy history! Ahah!

Soooooo… I had really high hopes after the first pages, I thought this could be another retarded fantasy masterpiece, but sadly it is only mediocre and very lazy in parts. But I have not abandoned all hopes, so I will keep on reading the “Warden” and see if there is antything to be enjoyed in it.

Very good and direct follow-up to Mercenary. The escort mission storyline style is over and the story is more along the lines of classic low-magic fantasy this time and we get to see more of the world that the author his creating. I found the writing style of this second book a little more subtle than in the first one and it make the story flow even better. The story itself is a strong point of the series so far, I really liked how the author structure the adventure. Even do it's a classic fantasy adventure, there is some interesting twist and plot lines that took me where I did not expect. I can't wait to continue my journey with Ganry, Myriam and friends and, really, that's the best praise someone can say about a book.

Much Better

Much better than the previous book. I suspect the first novel was an introduction and, starting with this sequel, the story has leaped into better action. There are some minor editing issues and the writing sometimes still seems clipped, as if some information has not been included, or it has been shortened to limit the number of pages. I’m speculating, of course. Still, an engaging read.

The story moves along as Princess Myriam and her group of followers try to take back the throne from her uncle.
Bit more happening than in book 1, but again it seems a bit rushed and basic.

A few more twists than the first book, and it will be interesting to see how they turn out, although you have to wait for the next volume to find out.

Ganry successfully got Mryiam to her grandmother, but his job is nowhere near over; now he has to help her reclaim her throne-which is easier said than done. Her uncle will stop at nothing to keep the throne for himself, and now that she has escaped to Castle Locke he has stepped up his efforts. With the entire Paladian army after them, and danger at every turn, keeping Myriam alive is hard enough; putting her on the throne seems nearly impossible.

Jon Kiln continues his Blade Asunder series perfectly with Guardian. He takes us back to the amazing world he created in Mercenary, and somehow makes it just a little better.
The story picks up at Castle Locke where there is a battle going on that Ganry wants to be part of, but he must protect Myriam. Her uncle's army is about to take the castle and they must escape. All that, and its only the first chapter.
Kiln brings everything to life clearly and perfectly, and he makes you feel like you are in the middle of the action instead of just reading it. You see all of it in your head just as if you were there. He does the same with his characters-they are real people that you can believe and relate to. Myriam and Ganry were already well rounded and well written characters, but you get to learn more about them and see them on a deeper level in Guardian. You also watch their relationship evolve; she is more than a job, he truly cares about her. He sees her as the daughter he should have had and he isn't quite sure how to handle that.
If you are already a fan of Kiln, you know how great his books are and you know you will love this one too. If you are just getting started with his work, hold on tight because you are in for a great experience. I am eagerly waiting to see what he does next and I know you will too!

I love these kind of books because
With loss there can be strength and perseverance.
