Firaq Gorakhpuri, pen name of Raghupati Sahay, is one of those early pioneers of hindi and urdu poetry, belonging to the era of the the Progressive Writers' Movement, which included literature stalwarts such as Munshi Premchand and Mulk Raj Anand among its members.

Love and romance are the focus of his poetry, but as written in the introduction, these are not the words of a desperate and despondent lover. His poetry is on the original side of that fine line that divides original poetry and hubris.

It's originality is enhanced by the strong presence of Urdu, which may appear complex to a reader at first but becomes understandable going forward. It is here that Prakash Pandit's effort has to be lauded. By collecting some of the best works of classic hindi and urdu writers in separate volumes of 'Lokpriya Shayar', he has made hindi and urdu literature more approachable for the youth.

The constant explanation of the urdu words in the footnotes makes the reading a joy as one not only witnesses the amalgamation of two languages but also learn some beautiful words. The fact that Sahay wrote more than a dozen volumes of Urdu poetry makes one realize that how important this volume becomes to introduce a novice to Gorakhpuri's oeuvre.

This is my first of the Prakash Pandit's editions of hindi and urdu classic works. Next is Sahir Ludhianvi. I would recommend not only Firaq Gorakhpuri but also rest of the books in this series to all the readers looking to explore depths of Hindustani poetry.

Abhi tak main Firaq sahab ko theek thaak shayar maanta tha. Par ye kitaab padhke pata chala unka qad sukhan aur haqiqi zindagi mein kitna ooncha hai. Legend aadmi fr.

Ofcourse the rating is not for Firaq sahib. The collection could have been better. Having said which, last 15 pages were magnificent.
