Kate Jarrett has been around the block a few times, her life nothing more than a trail of failures. After her father dies she inherits the family bar, a place where she’s accepted for who she is and loved for who she’s not. Due to the location of her new establishment, a few friends from her past make themselves welcomed and death shows up at her door.
Jon Peterson is a seasoned officer for the NYPD, his record clean and eyes set on being the youngest captain in the history of the force. When his little brother Adam turns up dead at a bar in the seedy side of town, Jon’s focus shifts. Is Kate involved in what happened to Adam or a pawn in a much larger game? Not interested in drama and hell-bent on justice mixed with revenge, Jon finds the one thing he never wanted – love.

TITLE: Blood Money SERIES: (Bad Money #1) AUTHOR: Ali Parker GENRE: Contemporary Romance RELEASE DATE: June 1st 2015
MY RATING: 4 STARS
This book was really enjoyable, we have a tough as nails heroine but when it came to commitments we see a vulnerable softer side to her, loved the intensity of her character, her shady background to her trying to turn her back on that life but no matter what your past usually has a way of finding you..I'm definitely hanging out for the next book..
The only reason why it's not a 5 star read for me is that it was kind of insta love,(and this is just my opinion) I need more of a build up, the flirting, the sexual tension, other than that I did really enjoy this..I loved the authors writing style, her story telling just draws you in, the need to know what's next kept me on the edge of my seat..And yes it did have a sucky cliffy but at least book #2 is just around the corner..
“9-1-1. What's your emergency." "This is Kate Jarret. I'm the owner of Expulsion on Twenty-second and Johnson Avenue. There's been a shooting behind my club and the boy is bleeding out.”
Five large bullet holes oozed blood
Wee bit confusing in the beginning, whilst doing a shift at the club she owns, Kate gets a bad feeling in her gut, tells her mate to be on high alert, says she's going to check things out at the back of the club, hears a gun shot, car tyres squealing, then sees a young man on the ground covered in blood whom she calls Adam..she calls help, has him in her arms then the next minute she's taken in for questioning..
Guessing it's one of those books the further you get in it more is divulged..
The girl was covered in his blood and she's a known criminal. She's been brought up on murder charges multiple times. The bitch did it. I want to question her.
Ohhhh gods lucky me who normally dodges cliffys just saw the big warning from the author: Cliff Hanger..GAH!!
He was just thirteen when they met (Adam) a kid on the run from a hard life with no dad and an overbearing Jesus-loving mother. He had mentioned a brother, but she hadn't gotten the chance to meet him, not that she wanted to.
Now we're getting somewhere..
Piece by piece things are making sense, other than the confusion in the beginning once you've caught up to speed in the story you find it hard to put down, it has my full attention..
He needed to find his brother's killer and she was either it, or knew something about it.
Not bad but completely unmemorable. Kate had turned her life around from a drug dealing junkie to a bar owner. Marcus was her fuck buddy/friend who dealt drugs. Jon was a cop who had a hidden dark side. Jon's brother died in connection with a criminal organization. The suspect was Kate. All of this drama should have been interesting but it wasn't.
I couldn't connect with the characters. None of them had depth. The bad guys were really bad. Everyone else was somewhat bad. I didn't care about Kate one way or the other. Jon was mildly interesting mainly because a secret dark past was alluded to. Marcus was a horny asshole. It was kind of a love triangle. Kate and Marcus were screwing but didn't love each other. I hated them together because his main interest in her was sex. The relationship was Jon and Kate was even wierder. He thought she killed his brother. He met her about a week later. After about 2 days they were in love. None of this felt remotely romantic.
The twist at the end is the main reason I'm not encouraged to keep reading. I'm cool with the criminal organization drama, but
4.5 star review of Blood Money (Bad Money #1) by Ali Parker
This was a new author to me and one I will be reading more from the first chance I get. Be warned that this is book one in the series and does end on a cliff hanger.
This is the story of Kate Jarrett, a tough woman who has had a very colourful past to say the least. Her hero is Jon Peterson a detective with the NOPD who is determined to make it to the top of his profession. The last thing either of them wants is to be attracted to each other.
When tragedy strikes and Jon’s younger brother Adam is murdered, he begins an investigation, starting with the woman who he believes might have murdered him. Kate is the owner of the bar in the not so nice part of town where Adam is shot and subsequently died.
It was interesting to see how Ms. Parker developed the relationship between Jon and Kate. Although I must say it did appear rather rushed but having said that, this is a work of fiction and for me I read to escape reality so it was not that big of a deal to me.
This book was gritty and at times quite edgy and I found myself reading anxiously to find out what happens next. Of course that was before I realised that there was a cliff hanger. On the positive the next book is available and I will be reading that next so I don’t have to wait too long to find out what happens next.
The book does cover subject matter not to my taste, but it was handled well and not just for sensationalism but for content and was absolutely necessary to the storyline. I was also surprised by how she concluded book one and I cannot wait to read.
What did I just read?!?!?!?!? At first, I thought this will be fine. Not award winning literature but a fun way to pass the time. The heroine is tough and no nonsense. She has a gritty past but is trying to overcome while living in a corrupt world. Then a young man is killed behind her club and her world is turned upside down. That's about all the positive I have to say.
Now for the ugly.
The writing and story was less than desirable. Example #1: The heroine's club is burned down. Yet she can walk into the office and have a conversation with a bookkeeper. Huh? Example #2: Every male in her life was obsessed with having anal intercourse with her. Um o.k. Now don't get me wrong. I like some smut. I am happy to read smut for the sake of smut. But the anal obsession?????? It did nothing for me or the plot Example #3: There were misspellings and editing errors. I understand that is not the author's fault but it does detract from the reading experience. Example #4: THE CLIFFHANGER!!!!! This book should have never been made into a serial. It would have been fine if the author beefed it up and left it as a stand alone. Oh by the way the cliffhanger itself.......insert eye roll.
Yeah....I'm not going to read the second one. But best of luck and happy read to those who do :)
Jon Peterson and Kate Jarrett have everything against them. Jon and Kate both loved his brother, and Jon's brother Adam was in love with Kate. After Adam is gone, Kate is arrested and charged with murder.
Jon is angry that he is so attracted to her. Kate tries to fight how she feels for him, but she cannot seem to control how she feels. Jon knows she could have any one she wanted. He just hopes he can convince her to want him.
Kate is surprised by how she is reacting to Jon. She has a man willing to help her with her physical needs, but is now finding she wants more. Can they be with him? Can she learn to trust?
The bar she owns seems to be the center of trouble lately. Jon is a police officer and must investigate if she is involved in the crimes committed there. He wars within himself about her guilt. Her is pretty sure she is innocent but has to prove it somehow.
This book is seriously fast paced and not for the faint of heart. There are many things that make you doubt where the book is going, but the author keeps us hopping as we head to the finish line. There is more coming in the next book in the Bad Money Series and I hope it comes out soon!!
***This ARC copy was given free from the author for review purposes. My honest opinion was given and is my real reaction to the above stated book.
I received a copy of this for free in exchange for a fair and honest review....
Oh my Goddess!! This was without a doubt one of the most awesome books I have read in a long time.. I had moments when I had to physically put my kindle down and stop reading, I thought my heart was either going to pound out of my chest or stop.. then there was the anger, the tears.... I ran the full gamut of emotions with this book.. This book so worked.. the characters are wickedly good... I love Marcus and Jon and Kate.... And the Cliffhanger ending... OMG!! what an ending!! the only complaint #2 where is it??? How many months do I have to wait!! Highly recommended to anyone over 18.... Wickedly good story I would have happily paid for this book and will be trying to find the paperback...
This was a book I couldn't put down. It had a full range of emotions as you read through the book. There is a cliff hanger ending that will leave you wanting to read the next book. My favorite characters are Kate, Jon and Marcus. Kate is a strong and no fear type of gal. She isn't afraid to face things head on. She does have a past but she was trying to leave that life style. The club she owned seemed like it was hoping. Marcus has been her best friend for a while. I really liked the story line as well. The characters totally fit perfectly.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a promising start to what looks to be a brilliant series.
I was so into this I read the whole book start to finish without pausing. The harshness of the drug world is so gritty, dark and full of hidden agendas, it makes addictive reading.
I love Kate, Jon & Marcus and can't wait to see what happens next in Dirty Money.
This is the first book I have read of Ali Parker and have to say I will be reading more of her books because of it, She keeps your interest and you never know if the characters are who you think they are and they are HOT. Looking forward to book Two, this is so worth your time put it on your TBR list, Thank you
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I was sucked into this book from page, I didn't want to put it down. This book is full of twists and turns, when I thought I knew what was happening, something else would happen. Can't wait to see what Ali Parker gives us in book 2!
Amazing from start to finish, had me hooked right away. Well developed plot and I can't wait to see what's in store for Kate and Jon as well as Marcus in the next book.
This book starts with the murder of a seventeen year old boy who just happens to be the younger brother of a cop. His last moments are spent with a woman named Kate who he has a relationship with but only in his mind. There are turns and twists all over this book that has to do with drugs, clubs, and bad cops in New Orleans. I can’t wait to read the other two books that continue this trilogy cause I want to know if Kate chooses who and what she wants between the cop and her partner at the club as well as a new agitator that decides to throw his hat and run things himself.
I got this book for an honest review. This book has suspense, sex, drugs, murder, violence. Once I started reading this book, it was hard to put it down. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to read.
Just couldn't get into this one. I always give them multiple chances because your mood does decipher what books to read, especially for a avid reader. It just didn't draw me in. It happens and it's usually the reader and not the book. However I wouldn't move on int this series.
This was a good book. The characters where amazing and interesting. I'm looking forward for Kate taking back her life.I'm also interested in reading the rest of the series. Thanks
Can't wait for book 2, I was on the edge of my seat. I had forgotten the two main characters which I had met by reading about the Castalettas. I look forward to the whole series.
Loved this book and would highly recommend it but warning to readers it ends with a cliff hanger. Kate, Marcus and Jon three people destined to meet with loving and jealousy as well as crazy criminals involved destiny awaits them.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
*I was gifted a copy of Blood Money by the author. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*
Club owner Kate Jarrett has not had it easy in life, and her past continues to haunt her even as she tries to walk the straight and narrow. When a kid Kate has known for a while shows up at the back entrance of her club with five bullet holes in his chest, she is thrown into the middle of the investigation of his death, and the investigating officer, Jon Peterson, thinks she’s guilty until proven innocent.
When Jon’s younger brother Adam gets himself killed, he’ll do everything in his power to find the killer and put them behind bars. But when his initial instinct about Kate proves to be wrong and he is undeniably attracted to her in a way he’s never been before, he’ll have to dive deep into the drug rings to avenge his brother’s death. His budding relationship with Kate could be a problem, or it could lead him right to the people he seeks.
Blood Money is a suspenseful story with a heated romance to spice things up. Although Kate has a “friends with benefits” arrangement with her best friend Marcus, once Jon enters the picture, there’s no turning back for either Kate or Jon. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and their heat turns it into a scorcher. One of the things I loved about this book was the way Jon used their chemistry to break down Kate’s walls about having a relationship. Although he was willing to give her what she wanted at first—just one night with no strings attached—he knew it wouldn’t be enough for either of them and made it clear he wanted more, but he would only give her more if she was willing to be in an actual relationship.
The plot was intriguing with Kate’s relationship to Adam and Jon being Adam’s brother, and then the way the other characters fell into place in the drug business. I always love a romance that has more going for it than just the romance, and Jon and Kate’s quest to find Adam’s killer while putting themselves in danger fit the bill. Kate was used to dealing with criminals and was able to take care of herself, and Jon had been a cop long enough to know what the world of drugs was like.
Unfortunately there were a few things that brought this story down for me. To start with, we got the typical cliché of the bad guy spilling his guts before being brought down. Of course I won’t tell you who it was or how it happened, but suffice it to say I was hoping for more out of the climax. It also ended too quickly, leaving some things up in the air that should have been addressed. While there is a second book, I was hoping to learn more about Jon’s past in this book since his not-so-clean record was mentioned a few times. The way it all wrapped up wasn’t very satisfying. The epilogue was really just another chapter, which then cut off the story instead of tying up those loose ends.
There were also some formatting and editing issues. There was a lack of commas before direct addresses. The phrase “could care less” was used a few times instead of “couldn’t care less.” At one point, Kate dropped her phone, but the next minute she slipped it from her pocket to make a call. A good editor would go a long way toward cleaning up these issues and polishing the book.
Overall, I liked the plot and the author’s writing style, but felt this could have been executed better.
It's probably near reality what happens in this book. I don't like the fact that there are only so few options for the characters. That life is full of things you can't change and just have to deal with. There are steamy parts and plenty of action but I guess this kind of mob scene is not for me.
Kate Jarrett, is not only beautiful but tough as nails, sassy, ballsy and she does what needs to be done in order to survive. I think she’s actually one of my new favorite heroine’s!
Kate grew up on the streets, so she knows how the game is played. After inheriting a club, she maintains a sense of normalcy, but it is actually just self-preservation after her dark past. Her bed buddy, Marcus is also her partner in the club, but he won’t give her the one thing she wants…love. He’s also the second hand to the drug lord in town only known as the “Boss”. Kate turns a blind eye to his drug dealings as long as he doesn’t bring it in the club! She always follows her gut instincts and keeps her eyes open for threats. Her instincts take her to the back alley of her club one night because she senses something is not quite right. She finds an old acquaintance, young Adam Peterson, bleeding out after being shot five times. She attempts to save him and ends up getting arrested in the process. How’s that for being a good Samaritan?
Unfortunately, her dark past makes her the best plausible suspect at the time, despite the evidence pointing to the contrary. This brassy brunette catches one of the detectives on the case off guard. Jon Peterson is Adam’s brother and he wants blood for his brother’s murder. But when he meets Kate, he can’t comprehend his feelings of lust towards her despite thinking she’s guilty. However, her story, the evidence, along with the pure emotions reflected in her eyes, changes his mind and he knows, or at least wants to believe in her innocence. After a series of thrilling events, Kate, Jon and Marcus know that Kate is being set up but they don’t know by who and they don’t know why. We soon get introduced to the new drug Lord in town, Victor Parence and a battle for territory ensues. After a harrowing ride, everything is revealed including the surprise of who the “Boss” actually is and who set Kate up to take the fall for Adam’s death. Unfortunately, with Victor coming out on the winning end and wanting Kate nothing will ever be the same for Kate, Jon and Marcus. Will Marcus finally admit he loves Kate, or will he push her towards Jon? And what will Victor’s lewd demands do to Kate and the men she loves?
This story grips you from the first chapter to the very last. You don’t know what to expect, and the suspense carries from beginning to end. The attraction, sexual chemistry and witty banter between both Jon and Kate and Kate and Marcus keep things interesting while the story unfolds. Piece by piece things start coming together to a climatic ending…or wait…is it just the beginning?? All I know, is I cannot wait to read “Dirty Money” the second book in the series, as the things revealed in Blood Money set up “Dirty Money” to be another thrilling ride.
I was given this book as a arc and I am so excited that I did what a start to what looks a promising series. This bok does end in a cliffhanger.
We meet Kate Jarrett, she has been around the lock a few times and has seen her fair share of trial of failures. The person she is closet to is her friends with benefits Marcus but Marcus is in love with Kate and would do anything for her.
When her dad dies she is left to run the family bar. Due to the situation of the bar some of Kate's old acquaintances turn but that doesn't bother her as she is accepted for who she is. Just as things are going well her past and a killing comes back to bite her on the ass. A old friend from her past Andy is found on the bars doorway after attempted murder attempt. Kate rushes to help Andy but she is to late as Andy dies in her arms. This leads Kate straight back to her old ways.
Step forward police officer Jon Peterson who works for the NYPD who is clean cut and is set on becoming the youngest captain in the forces history.
Adam was Jon's brother so immediately is led straight to Kate. Where Jon was clean cut Adam had fallen into the wrong crowd. The evidence against Kate is high but Jon has to work out if his brother was just a pawn in a game. Jon is sure Kate is involved but while he's investigating the case there is attraction between both Jon and Kate. They are like moths to a flame and the last thing Jon expected was to find.
Received a copy from the author for an honest review....
This book was great it had a smoking hot dance club, sex money, lust, what more could we ask for, well there was some mystery. I could not put it down, great read.
The story in his book is very well written and well developed and the story line is very fast paced, you will find yourself turning page after page to see whats going to happen. The characters in this book are very well developed and so much chemistry between Kate and Jon, while I find that there are no sparks with Kate and Marcus.
In this book we meet Kate who owns a club with Marcus, Kate and Marcus have a sex only thing going on. While working at the club Kate has a feeling that something is wrong and she heads to the alley behind the club, where her friend Adam has been shot and dies in her arms. This is how she meets Jon, Adams brother and the detective that is investing Adams murder, where Kate is the main suspect. We will see Jon and Avery share a night of passion, but will that all it be is one night??
We are left with so many things left unanswered at the end of this book, cannot wait for book two.
Marcus. Kate. Jon. Three formidable characters. Three fiery personalities. Three gorgeously sexy entities. Driven by force, greed, money, drugs, lust and love – all inflammable ingredients to one explosive story. Where one seeks revenge for the death of his brother, the other one tries his best to protect his partner to the extent of pushing her away from all the grittiness of it all. And in the middle of these lies the beauty that is Kate, damaged goods but definitely still worth picking up a fight for.
This is the world of Blood Money and once you’re in it, you can’t get yourself out of it. The lies, betrayal, the crimes of passion, the lust – it’s all to much to take, and the reader is left clamoring for more!
From one hit to another, Ali Parker proves once again that cliffhangers are her forte and she’s the queen of erotic fantasies! Damn girl, you just made my heart soar and palpitate like crazy!
Club owner Kate Jarrett hasn't had an easy in life, her past continues to haunt her even as she tries to walk the straight and narrow. Her life changes when her friend Adam dies in her arms, she is then thrown in the middle of the investigation of his death, and the investigating officer is Jon Peterson Adam's older brother, and he thinks she’s as guilty as sin until proven innocent.
Because of Adam's lifestyle he’ll have to dig into the drug rings in order to avenge his brother’s death. His budding relationship with Kate and Marcus could be a problem, or it could lead him right to the people he seeks.
This author does a great job building up the characters and keeping you in true suspense as you see where the next turn leads. Blood Money is a suspenseful story with a heated romance to spice things up. A Must Read! Blood Money
