I had the good fortune of being a guest at “Casa Blue” from this story, which is now a lovely boutique hotel owned by a French chef. This book was on the nightstand in my suite. Casa Blue is exactly as described in the book- 20 years later, and so is Zihuatenejo. That part of the book is magical, but the rest feels like 300 pages of arrogant navel gazing.

Curled up on my sofa, I eagerly finished this book. As I looked out windows to contemplate what I was reading, I watched the snow, thick and heavy cover the ground. Between the touching glimpses at the committed love that only a couple who had spent a life together raising a family, the mouthwatering descriptions of foods and the zany personalities of all characters involved I had a hard time putting the book down. This book was light hearted, heart felt and gave me the warm fuzzies. I am generally not one to read a lot of fiction, but I really enjoyed this book. I hope Daniel Kennedy will one day write another book, maybe even a second one on the School at Z. The cover design is what originally caught my eye at our local used bookstore with it's lovely illustrations. I would have loved to see a recipe section at the back of the book.

The characters and plot were decent, but the writing was really not up to a professional level. I think that this book may have been self-published, based on the large number of grammatical errors & the lack of publisher info on the back of the title page. Not recommended!

A friend loaned me this book when I was visiting. The best part about it for me was that years ago, on a visit to Mexico, I believe I swam at the very spot where this book takes place. Z refers to Zihuatenejo. Good light reading-I read most of it during a flight.

3 1/2 stars. A great find at a book sale. The story takes place in Zihuatanejo, Mexico....a beautiful port town I visited a few years ago. Decent entertaining story with interesting people.
