Reporters Abby Abagnarro and his ex-wife Ike Tygart are on-site at the New York Knicks practice when bullets pepper the arena, and after it is discovered that The Iceman, the team's top player, had been knifed to death, not shot, the duo goes on the hunt to find who really killed him.
Until It Hurts by Polly Whitney is a mystery set in New York City and features Ike and Abby. Ike is a morning news show producer and Abby is her ex-husband and a director at the television station. When the crew is at Madison Square Garden for an exclusive interview with a basketball player, a shotgun blast occurs injuring all players. However, only one doesn’t live and his death is a surprise. Archie Thorpe was the team’s star center and their hope for a winning season. Besides his death, the killer doesn’t want those who saw anything to survive either.
The characterization is reasonably well done. Despite being divorced Ike and Abby work together, rollerblade together, and participate in ballroom dance competitions. Squabbling, whining, and bad jokes abound. While it has a decent mystery plot and is amusing at times, it is also somewhat forgettable.
Overall, this is an entertaining mystery that moved at a good pace.
I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date was January 1, 1997. --------------------------------------- My 3.05 rounded to 3 stars review is coming soon.
The third and last of Polly Whitney's Ike and Abby stories is enjoyable enough, but the formula has gotten just a tad too set. Abby has a joke he keeps trying to tell, there is rollerblading, ballroom dancing, wisecracking. And network news, which continues to be an interesting culture to watch from the inside.
