Roman Young, quarterback for the Dallas Destroyers, doesn’t expect to get a gun shoved in his face by the beautiful red head, Katie Winters, when he arrives to sell the Inn he inherited from his uncle in Wolfe Creek, Utah. But, he’s not surprised, either. It’s the way his life has been lately. Just ask the tabloids that have happily reported his shattered knee, his wife's affair, and the car accident.
Unfortunately, Katie is wearing a wedding ring. Not that he noticed. He doesn’t know why he doesn’t tell her about the fact he’s selling the Inn, even after she shoves a list of supply demands into his chest and rambles on and on about all the projects they have to do.
When he discovers her husband passed away a year ago, and her seven-year-old son asks him to come to dinner and movie night, things start to change. Or did they start to change when Katie took him sledding? Or when all he could think about was kissing her? Now he has to make a choice—keep ignoring the truth—or try one Last Play.

A note from the author:
Thanks for visiting my Goodreads page.
I wanted to tell something meaningful about myself, but let's start with the important stuff--I love swoon-worthy heroes. The kind of heroes that are strong and would take a bullet for you, but also want to open your door and listen to you pour out your heart.
What else? I grew up moving. If you’ve read my books, you won’t be surprised by this. I have a lot of moving themes through my books centered around characters experiencing pain from someone moving.
It was hard. But, I believe there’s always a seed of good that comes out of everything hard, so I think the best thing that came from it was that I learned to love books.
And I had to learn a lot of mad skills on friend making. It gave me a love of people…good people, compassionate people. Interesting people of all kinds.
What else about me? I am a mother and wife! I have four amazing boys that are like little ninjas running around. I love them so much and I’m so grateful for my amazing husband who doesn’t get intimidated by all the billionaire men in my life.
I have a fierce love of my Savior, Jesus Christ. I am so grateful for Him and for the healing and forgiveness I’ve gotten to experience in my life. This is a theme in many of my books.
I love being an American. I am so proud of the men and women that support and preserve our freedom. This is another theme you will find in my books.
I am so grateful for my fans and for the support and love you all show me! Don’t stop reading!
I love a good clean contemporary romance novel and this one fit the bill! Once I can stop running around and sit down at my computer I'll write a full review.
I've seen so many friend's reviews for books by Taylor Hart that I finally read one and really enjoyed it! I keep reading these emotional and thought provoking, heart wrenching(to some extent) novels and I thought this one will be a sweet, fun lighthearted read. For the most part, yes it was. But with some of the craziness of my life there were some aspects that hit close to home that I found myself very emotional during this read. I think I'll probably be that way with many books for a while to come. Lol! Don't let my saying that I was emotional from this one deter you if you are looking for a fast, fun, light read because I think if I wasn't experiencing some of the things I'm experiencing I wouldn't have been as emotional.
Warning, my time is short so this will just be a quick blurb and not anything too in depth, which I'm sure is just fine by many of you, but it's definitely not quite like my other reviews. ;)
Roman is a big shot Quarterback for a professional football team. He has had many ups and downs between his career and his personal life. His knee went out which caused him to be down for the final big game and his wife had an affair which led to their divorce. Roman's uncle and greatest supporter(his other family members are gone or nonexistent in his life) has recently passed away. Roman didn't find out until after it happened because his uncle didn't want him to feel torn between getting back in the game or leaving all his hard work behind to come take care of him. Roman flies out as soon as he hears and finds himself stuck in a snowed in town up in the mountains in Utah at his uncle's bed and breakfast inn. He hopes to sell but his first few minutes there throw him into the path of Katie. She is a spitfire and keeps him on his toes throughout the book. Katie has been the caretaker at the B&B and is trying to get Roman to help her get it up and running and remodeled.
This was just a sweet, clean, fast paced contemporary romance novel that I really enjoyed. I liked the author's explanation of the title, Last Play. Katie and Roman had a lot to work through emotionally on their own but were able to strengthen and help each other as they did so.
The ending was so cute! I loved it. Without spoiling it for anyone it had me smiling pretty big and I kinda giggled too. :-D I'm definitely excited to try more of Taylor Hart's books, she has a fun, easy going writing style.
This is a fast fun read. One of those skip the movie and curl up with a book instead type of books that can be read in a couple of hours. Enjoyed and will read the next book in this series.
An Adult Sports Romance story that I’ve had on my iBooks library for the longest time. I binged it in one sitting and found it to be a good read, but not quite my cup of tea. Following a star quarterback for a top US American Football team, Roman Young learns about the passing of his Uncle and travels back to Utah to take up his inheritance- An Inn that he wants to sell on. But when he crosses paths with local woman Katie, both of them are forced to confront the demons of their pasts and whether a future together would work for them. It was a lovely snowy setting, that felt festive but not too chilly. The pacing and length were quick, but I struggled to connect to the characters on a personal level. An interesting start to a series, however, I’m not sure if this is for me.
When football star Roman Young arrives at the Inn in Wolfe Creek, Utah it's during a massive snow fall and the power's out. He's only there to check out the Inn he inherited from his uncle and sell it. He's not prepared to have someone with a shotgun threaten to shoot him because she thinks he's a squatter, but Roman adds it to the list of things that have gone wrong in his life the last couple of years--his injured knee, his cheating wife, and a car accident.
He's not ready for Katie Winters, with her red hair and green cat-like eyes. Roman thinks she's married because she wears a wedding ring, but finds out she's a widow with a young son. His Uncle Jim hired her to do work around the Inn before he got sick. She's a force to be reckoned with as she gives him a long list of supplies they need so they can accomplish all the work the Inn needs before it reopens in the Spring.
I liked Roman. He had made mistakes, some serious ones, but he was trying to get his life back on track and keep out of the media spotlight like his Uncle Jim had told him to do when he first started playing professional football. I felt sorry for Roman because his uncle kept his illness from him and told his attorney not to let Roman know about the funeral until after the playoffs. Roman had no control over that but the people in town treated him as if he hadn't cared about his uncle. That seems to be a common theme in books that take place in small towns. The prodigal son or daughter comes back and everyone treats them as if they know everything when more times than not they don't know the story.
I didn't like Katie at first. She was really hard on Roman when she didn't know that he didn't know about his uncle's illness and death until it was too late for him to do anything about it. She also had things to work through like Roman.
This is only my second book by this author and my first in this series. I got a free copy from Amazon and figured what did I have to lose if I didn't like it. I'm glad I took a chance on this story because I liked it. The author explains the title of the book in the story.
*I recieved a free copy of this novel from Instafreebie.* Last Play was a quick, easy read about superstar football player, Roman Young, who has to go to a remote town when his late uncle leaves him an inn. He meets feisty single Mum, Katie and quickly falls in instalove. I really wasn't fussed on this book. It was alright, but nothing to gush about. It felt like a first draft that needed a lot more fleshing out (it is possible do this in a romance novella- I have read some amazing ones). The characters were likeable, I just didn't buy their relationship. I won't be continuing this series.
I actually enjoyed this book. It was fast, fun, sweet, and entertaining. I loved that she was firery. I love that it wasn't all roses, but had real feeling in it. It was a good read.
This book was just okay for me. I was having a hard time getting into and at about 50% I ended up skimming a lot just to get to the end.
I have a lot of friends who absolutely loved this book as well as the entire series. So please do not let me not being able to get into it stop you from checking this series out! Enjoy! :)
Last Play: Book 1 Last Play Romance Series: A Bachelor Billionaire Companion: The Last Play Series is by Taylor Hart. This is the book that started the series. All of the main characters are major league game players of different sports. This reminds me of my Mother-in-law who loved sports- any sport, especially football. Roman Young was the Dallas Destroyer’s quarterback although he hadn’t played in the final championship game due to his injury. However, it was sufficiently healed that he could have played; but the coaches didn’t let him. Instead Sam Dumont was given his position on the team and he had taken Roman’s positon as husband to Sheena. Roman just knew he had to leave. He had gotten word from an attorney that his Uncle Jim had died and had already been buried. Now, he was headed to the Alaskan Inn to visit before he sold it. Roman’s place was on the field. Katherine (Katie) had been put in charge of getting the inn ready for occupancy. She was angry at Roman for not coming to the funeral until she learned the truth- Roman hadn’t known when it was. Katie was a single Mom bringing up her child and as long as Josh was happy, so was she. What chaos will Roman bring into her life? This book is really cute. It makes for short but fun reading.
Fue una historia bonita y entretenida. Bastante simple y muy inocente. Una lectura muy rápida. Dulce y limpia.
El amor entre los protas fue muy poco creíble. Me falto como un poco mas de desarrollo. De parte de él fue más creíble que por parte de ella. Tal vez tenga que ver con que no tenemos POV de ella.
I love Roman and Katie's meet cute. There was great tension between them from the very beginning. They are good people and both need a second chance at love.
This was a short and sweet read. The beginning was a little slow and I found the H to be a little whiny, but he really grew on me as his character developed and changed. There certainly isn't anything new in this story, but it was an engaging read nonetheless. If you're looking for a clean, sweet romance that doesn't annoy you with unnecessary angst, you might really enjoy this one.
What I liked: 1) The book is entirely from the H's pov, told in the third person. I found it a refreshing change from the dual pov romances that I've read recently. The most important aspect of the telling of this story, however, is the fact that the H actually sounded like a man, not a sappy girl. Thank you, Taylor Hart. 2) The h was an educated woman, who was hard working and real. She also wasn't socially awkward. I don't know about you, but I can't stand the awkward h's anymore. Er... 3) This story starts when the H is at the cusp of realizing some not so nice things about himself. He's also at the point in his life where he's ready to make some real changes. I'm glad this is where we find ourselves, and not in the midst of his bad decision making spree, as that might have made me crazy. We hear about the not so happy part of his life, we get a glimpse of how he felt during that time, and it was the perfect amount of unhappiness for me. It made his problems seem real without weighing the story down with sadness. 4) This book is very clean. I don't think there's any swearing in it and there's sex at all. Yay! 5) This was a quiet book. The MCs are adults, with adult problems, and they're trying to figure out their lives in adult ways. I found their story of forgiveness, whether it's for themselves or others, poignant.
What I didn't like: 1) The drama with Lou, the om, seemed very contrived. It really wasn't needed to make the story work. 2) The OTT reactions at the end of the book and the poorly timed kiss made me annoyed with the MCs. 3) We don't really know what went on with the individual MCs during their six month break. 4) There was no epilogue.
Usually speaking, I do not mind cliched romance novels. However, Last Play honestly seemed to be extreme. The plot was overly predictable and there was a possibility for character depth, however, a puddle is deeper than these characters. There was an amazing opportunity to delve into the grief and guilt Roman felt regarding his uncle, his death and the overall way he delved into the life of a professional athlete, but instead the reader is left with the typical tropes that usually accompany this type of novel. And for the most part, I would usually be okay with that, it's just in this instance, I felt there was so much that could have been accomplished and was just left hanging. Like many authors today, quickly pump out five to ten books that make a series without allowing for any form of character development.
4.5 Stars!!! Hart totally hooked me with this one! She really has a talent for writing romantic and heart touching stories. This one had me laughing out loud a few times and definitely grinning, a lot! I thoroughly enjoyed it! Hart writes characters that feel real, tension that seems genuine and romance that is both charged and sweet! I am looking forward to the rest of this series!
NOTE: Currently this novel is free and the rest of the series is available with Kindle Unlimited. The novel is longer than a novella but shorter than my average read. Perfect for a quick read that feels lengthy in a good way!
This book was my introduction to Taylor Hart's writing. It was a quick read, super fun, and cute!
Roman is a star quarterback who is beckoned to his deceased uncle's bed and breakfast after his death. He's a broken man, unsure of his calling in life and feeling empty after several betrayals in his life. Katie is a young widow, struggling to raise her son while renovating and managing Roman's uncle's property. Their romance is sweet and their banter is so funny and cute.
Now I'm rushing to book #2 of the series!
I received this book from the author via Instafreebies. I was not required to give a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
This quick read features Roman Young and Katie Winters in a whirlwind romance that had me cheering the cute couple on. Roman is a pro quarterback whose uncle has just died and left him the family inn. He takes off to quickly liquidate his assets, but meets Katie and gets snowed in before he can put his plan into action. The characters were great; the writing was edited well; the setting in the snowy mountains of Utah was fun and the pacing kept me glued to my seat. Overall a sweet read that I enjoyed a lot.
This was a very easy and short read. Would have finished much faster had I not fallen asleep and decided to go shopping. I would have loved to see more Josh in this book because you can't be a 7 year old boy being all cute and funny. It seems pretty unrealistic that someone could fall in love after 2 days, maybe if he would have been working on the inn for maybe 2 weeks it would have been a bit better. Well on to the next book.
I wasn't quite sure how this book would play out, but I really enjoyed it. The characters had depth and their dialogue was comical and witty- I definitely want to read more from this author!
I love Taylor Hart's books. Clean, fun, romantic and she knows how to pull you right in quickly. There's no skim reading to pass over unnecessary passages to bump out a story. Easy read and just the perfect amount of happy ending!
Very sweet, adorable romance. I liked the emphasis on family and this idea of home. I thought Roman was fantastic and loved the banter between him and Katie. Fun read
Can I just start off by saying that I absolutely love this series?! I have read almost all of them and every time that I get a new one I feel giddy inside! I have been reading them out of order, so good news everyone, the can be read that way.
"Last Play (Last Play #1)" by Taylor Hart started off with an almost bang (literally), for the new owner of the lodge walked into the room- never expecting a gun to be pointed his way from the feisty red head! Roman Young has been used to getting his way for so long, he never had to wonder if people saw his in a good light or not for he was a football star; however that is all going to change once he meets Katie Winters and her no nonsense attitude about 'his life' and 'his actions.'
Having been raised during the summers at his Uncle's lodge, Roman knows that he should have been more involved in his Uncle's life over the years; however, once that knowledge was finally obtained, it was just too late to do anything about it. Katie Winters helps him to work through his grief and learn to trust God again. Can God heal these places if only people will let Him?
Life always has an interesting way of working itself out. Things happen everyday that cannot be helped, secrets will always be brought into the light. I haven't read any of the other series by Ms. Taylor, but if they are even half as good as this one is- I know that they will be great.
This was an OK read. It wasn't the most original nor a particularly gripping read but it was quick and easy to read.
The main characters are Roman and Katie. To me neither of the characters are especially noteworthy. And I didn't find them all that interesting to read about.
There were secondary characters but I thought they were even less interesting than the main characters.
The storyline wasn't the most original and to be honest it wasn't the best book I've read in this genre. The pacing is OK but nothing noteworthy.
Cute and fun and easy to read with a good plot and characters who you can't help but root for! Enjoyed this clean and quick story by Taylor Hart. Note: There were a few terrible spelling errors that made me laugh... 1. At one part in the book a character gets behind another on a snowmobile and puts his hands on her waist, but waist was spelled like waste instead and I couldn't stop picturing him actually touching human waste. Kind of spoiled the vibe... 2. When he goes upstairs, he sees the bathroom is remodeled, but remodeled is spelled like remolded instead which made me think of someone purposely putting mold in a bathroom.
I think I rolled my eyes more times while reading this than I have my entire life lol.
I didn’t like the writing, I felt the author really sucked at giving the characters any sort of depth or emotion, which is crazy considering their situations.
I’d go into detail about what I didn’t like here, but it’d turn into a whole rant and I just can’t be bothered putting any more energy in for this book.

This is a sweet, clean short romance with interesting characters. Humorous in parts and there is tension between Katie and Roman-she lost her husband almost a year ago and is raising a son, he recently lost his uncle, inherited an inn, and is being judged by townspeople for not coming to the funeral. He would have been there for the funeral but his uncle wanted him to come afterwards. There are some awkward moments and a few misunderstandings along the way, but there is a HEA in the end.
Roman Young has good reason to not be very trusting, his marriage had been a big mistake. A championship is wonderful, but a little hard when you weren’t allowed to play, makes that ring a little tarnished and now his anchor, his uncle Jim, is gone. I love choices but is a rundown inn or a pro-football career really an equal choice? I guess it depends on which one gets the girl. I loved this story of finding what and who is important in your life.
I enjoyed this short read, only 168 pages on my kindle. A lot was packed in this little story of a pro football player, Roman and a sassy female, Katie. Both have been hurt by lost love. Both situations are different for them though. Katie is a widow and Roman is divorced because his wife cheated on him. They need each other, but will they realize it before it is too late?
Star quarterback Roman is heading to the inn left him by his uncle, surprising the manager who greets him with a shotgun. Katie and her son Josh soon have Roman wishing for a different way of life. Agents, real estate agents and wannabe boyfriends keep cluttering up the road to a HEA.
