A recognized tournament is coming to Redmoon Lake. If word gets out that a fifteen-foot alligator gar has not only taken over the lake it has taken someone’s life, the event would surely be called off. More than likely, it would never be rescheduled.
The members of the Castaline Bassackwards fishing club decide to take matters into their own hands. When someone gets carried away and kills a young gar the adult male retaliates in the worst way.
Lee Jackson, a thirteen-year-old budding geologist, moved farther away from his younger brother and the shoreline, as he continued on his quest to find more rocks and gemstones to add to his growing collection.
“Chal-ced-o-ny.” He pulled a spiral tablet from his hip pocket. Flipped through the pages until he found what he was looking for. “Yep. Chalcedony. Includes many varieties of, um, crypto-crys-tal-line... cryptocrystalline quartz gemstones.” He stuffed the tablet in his pocket. Following a worn trail around a curve he glanced back in time to see his brother, Tate, casting his line into the water.
He couldn’t believe his luck when he spotted the gray stone at the base of a tree. Moving forward another thirty feet, Lee came upon a flat chunk of petrified wood that had broken off of a much larger piece. Feeling lightheaded all of a sudden he pressed a hand against a tree trunk to steady himself. Beads of sweat trickled down his back. A brief gust offered little relief.
For the first time in a while he took in his surroundings. He wasn’t far from the private pier behind his grandparent’s lake house. He turned his head the other way. Not only had he lost track of the time, but he’d also lost sight of his eight-year-old brother.
