After reading and really liking book one of the Between Worlds series: Dark Promise, I was really excited for book 2! Broken Promise is even more enjoyable than book one is, with more twists and turns, and even more romantic scenes. It was an easy page turner that almost ended too soon. In Broken Promise, one of the things I really loved was how much more the faery world was involved and described. I feel like this book took me to wonderland where the grass is green and flowers bloom everywhere, and you can practically taste the magic in the air. Julia Crane and Talia Jager did a BEAUTIFUL job creating a believable faery world! I commend you!
Throughout the book I wanted things to work out so much between Rylie and Kallan, and as the story continued I fell more in love with him as a male lead. And here’s a heads up: in this series, faeries can’t tell a lie, soo every emotion given between the two was brutally honest which was awesome! There were no hidden secrets, no emotions that were held back, Kallan just lays his heart out on the table, and it was beautiful! The tension is set high in this book as the love triangle grows stronger, and I found myself aggravated by how much I wanted it to just play out romantically how I wanted it to! But believe me when I say that by the end of this book I was completely satisfied and sooo eager for more!
Yeah, Adam's great but I kept rooting for Kal (Kallan). Kal just appealed to me more. None of this is Adam 's fault. I had to agree with Ry on that one. I had mixed feelings about her, but she has really become an awesome heroine better than a lot of popular books. I also love how she wasn't all of a sudden this badass fighter ready to kill as a teenager, but was capable of accepting that some things were inevitable and even a little funny.
A lot happened. There was character and plot development. I would have loved if Rylie could have explored her powers a little more in this book. Crane is holding back on us. That end, though. Dark magick...
*unrelated note* I love Lelouch Vi Britannia making that last gif so awesome to me
At first, I had thought that the writing had improved than the first book and that it was going to be real good, but then turns out it wasn’t really anything special.
This book continues Rylie’s struggle in balancing her identities and relationships in the human world as well as the newly-discovered faery world. Someone who hasn’t read the prequel would never get the hang of what is happening in this book. In short, this would be a really bad standalone even if there isn’t much story it is carrying forward from the prequel.
There were a lot of revelations in this book. The authors tried to add more and more details to this faery world they had created, but to me it felt dumb, as if not much consideration was given to the world-building or characterization as much as the romance.
Another thing that bugged me was the protagonist. Not that she was unlikable; in fact her narrative was very soothing and comfortable. But the way she treated people around her was very unfair. Her cousins especially, threatening them to get her way, and Adam too. The way she ended things with him without as much as an explanation, was cruel of her. Not that I like Adam. Ugh no, Rylie and Adam’s relationship was basically just kissing-mates, nothing else. Still, no one deserves to be treated the way Rylie treated Adam.
The characters themselves were a bit unrealistic and two-dimensional. They did not show any reactions a normal human (or faery) would have under their circumstances AND their straightforward behavior was too good to be believable. The happily-ever-after ending didn’t do much to warm me up either.
In short, this book had no impact on me whatsoever. No sort of emotional response from my side. Since I wasn’t actually expecting anything, I am not that disappointed either. Like I said, neutral. Recommended to fans of Twilight, or ‘normal’ paranormal beings. Others- you have better books to read.
I'm happy to say that book 2 did not disappoint me. The book picks up with Rylie back in the human world still hoping life will return to normal. A year has passed since she made her promise to return to the dark faeries to marry Kallan, but it hasn't been as easy as she thought it would be to forget the changes in her life. She still thinks about Kallan and knows that her feelings for him haven't gone away. To make matters more complicated, he decides to come to the human world to be closer to her. However, Rylie is still determined to find a way out of the promise and have the life she always dreamed of with Adam.
In addition, as much as she'll want to distance herself from all thing faery and does the past year, things will come to a head when she starts to fail her classes (and realizes she is already jeopardizing her future college plans), travels to faery and meets other family members and learns more about her biological father, and brings Sierra into her confidence and introduces her to the faery world.
The only negative I have is that she does still drive me a little crazy with how much she tries to be "normal". She isn't and keeping Azura at a distance for a good portion of the book is sad. She does eventually see the beauty in faery, but then tragedy strikes and again, becomes a bit of a brat. At the end, she'll still have to make a choice between Kallan and Adam, and her responsibilities in faery. I'm happy to say she does finally make the right choice (at least to me).
I loved the first book in the series and I loved this! Rylie that girl, "I was obsessed with Kallan." Me to hun, me to. Kallan has changed but just a little he's still my sweet boy, that I sometimes want to strangle, Rylie I think has made him see his errors or however that saying goes, but he's still just as playful as ever, "this is the men's room, you know. Generally, that means no girls allowed." Rylie we see a different side of her one of jealousy I liked this look on her, "sure looks like you have a lot of girls to choose from," I told him. "Maybe you could pick another." Kallan is learning to actually speak how he feels which in the last book he never really did, "I love you, and I'm not walking away. I've been going crazy since you left." I'd never leave you Kallan why can't you choose me? The jealousy works both ways people Kallan also gets a jealous gene in his body, "I wasn't to thrilled myself. So what? You're not allowed to dance with anyone else? That's pretty lame. I didn't take you for the submissive type." Just as the jealous bone comes it goes and left in it's wake is the playfulness, "have you ever slept with a guy before?" Kallan smirked and patted the bed beside him." I liked the ending it's what I wanted and was hoping for, although I'm not to sure Rylie's story is done so I'm hoping there's going to be a third book.
I so needed some more Kallan so I dived straight in to Broken Promise and Julia Crane and Talia Jager did not disappoint. Rylie is still having a hard time dealing with the fact that her parents are not who she thought they were her entire life. Then to make matters more complicated Rylie keeps seeing Teal in her vision and knows Kallan is near. Why would he be in the human world?
Back to school and the new guy is getting all the girls attention. Guess who Kallan decides to enroll in an attempt to win Rylie over. Now Rylie is torn obviously drawn and very attracted to Kallan but dating long time boyfriend and best friend Adam.
Julia and Talia have this journey come to a head in the end of this 2nd book. Rylie will have to choose. Journeys and heartache are inevitable and Rylie will feel them full force. I can not wait to check out book 3 due to be released sometime this fall. I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars and will be buying this book in Paperback as well to keep on my bookshelf.
This is the second book in the Between Worlds series writen by Author Julia Crane.
Its been a year since Rylie has returned home after making a promise to Varwik, Leader of the Dark Faeries, to marry his son Kellen and return to Faery Realm on her eighteenth birthday. Follow Rylie as Kellen comes for her to show she has feelings for him.
I enjoyed reading this book though I did prefer the first. I found the writing to be descriptive, interesting and full of romance. The writer did a wonderful job but did come across as a little predictable.
The faery world was so different from the human world. Both were wonderful in different ways. I felt like I was being pulled in opposite directions. I wasn’t sure what I wanted anymore. -Rylie, Broken Promise.

I give this a 3.5 rating. I definitely enjoyed this one more than the first book. I liked how she was finally starting to figure things out. I was glad about her decision in the boyfriend department. I will admit it would have been better without the love triangle part. However, when this was written that was still the in thing to do. I just hope everything is wrapped up nicely in the next book.
I was enchanted with these two books. had to have the 2nd one as soon as I finished the first n not even 15hours later I am done n want more. it has been awhile since a book grabbed me like that.
I loved the first book and the second book she was having a very hard time understanding why all of this happened to her and she understands by the end of the book
Beautiful fantastic tale of wonderful characters and creative setting captures attention from beginning to end. Love the idea of this reality and thrilled with the struggle!
This was an enjoyable book. I was a little put off by the timeline of the book but it was otherwise an enjoyable book. I look forward to reading the next book.
In this book I really didm;t expect it to start where it did. I expected it to start closer to when her deal with the dark faery king was coming up, instead it starts a year before. Kallan coming to the school was a big plot twist for me, I honestly did not expect that at all. This book kept me on my toes and I liked that. I felt like Rylie was somewhat warming up to Azura in this book and while that was happening I was like: ABOUT TIME! Oren when we met him, really made me mad, did not like that dude at all. But when he came back, not only was I shocked but I also saw that he understood that he was really stupid to do what he did to Rylie when she was born. When Rylie kept pushing Adam away, I got super frustrated. Adam is practically an angel and she was completely blowing him off. Their relationship kept getting strained and she wasn't trying at all to amend it. Thats when Kallan came in. Although I'm team Kallan, I still like Adam. Just wanted to put that out there. Kallan really tried to get closer to Rylie in this book and every second he was so sweet and protective her I just knew she would end up choosing him, and she did YESSSSSS. How Adam and Rylie broke up really upset me. Adam deserved more than that, Rylie was really being a thoughtless. I know that Rylie felt guilty but thats no excuse, that guy was so good to her and didn't deserve the breakup that way. But I am glad that she choose Kallan. #TeamKallan
I would definitely recommend continuing the series to anyone who has read the first book.
Again, I loved reading about the beautiful faery world. The descriptions were vivid and enchanting.
Rylie's character has developed so much since the beginning and I really enjoy her strong personality.
Kallan still remains dark and mysterious (I agree with Rylie). I love characters who have these layers readers have to unfold and discover hidden goodness on the inside like Kallan. It makes his character interesting and intriguing to read about.
I love the relationship between best friends, Sierra and Rylie. They are always there supporting each other no matter what. Azura and Rylie's relationship has also grown to more than just friendly to almost a mother-daughter relationship. They aren't as close as Rylie's human mom, but I hope they come close to that as the series goes on.
The climax was quick and not as powerful as it could have been, but it didn't feel rushed. Also, it was news to me when Kallan told Rylie had used Dark Magick and maybe more clues to that happening would have been better. I was a bit confused when he said that because I read it as she just stepped in the fight and then it go confusing for me.
All in all, excellent sequel, great writing, amazing characters and I'll be reading book three once it comes out :)
Very enjoyable book. I liked it better then the first book because there was a more adventure. The first book stayed mostly in the same area, whereas in this book we got to explore more of the faery realm. Rylie continues to be a believable character as she struggles with deciding who to be with and where to go forward in her future. There's the future that's been dictated for her, the future she wants, and the future she doesn't know is possible yet. The storyline moves along at a good pace and as stated above, we get to explore the faery realm more. I can certainly see potential for future installments in this series, but the story is complete and whole of itself even if no future books are written.
The only bad thing I have to say about this book is that the ending is very abrupt and I wanted to read so much more of it! Apart from that, it was amazing.
In the second book, Rylie has been set free by Kallan, but not for forever. She has to return on her 18th birthday and marry him, or his father will have everyone she loves killed. She is determined to get out of the promise she made. She loves her boyfriend back home, but she can't hide the strange feelings she have towards Kallan. A year later and with a year left until she has to go back to the world of the Dark Faeries, Kallan turns up at her school and enrols as a new student, and it's all to win her heart.
With twists and turns, a lot of growing, some sad points, some new discoveries.
I loved the way the characters grow as the story continues. So many things happen, things change even more than book 1 with Rylie becoming a faery. So join her and the rest of the gang on the journey through this story.
Things progress with a nice flow and it keeps your attention, and puts you in Rylie's place as things go along.
Book 3 & 4 Talia takes over sole writing...hope it keeps up the pace of the story. Really want to see where the story goes from the last scene in this book
I love this book, it picked up where Dark Promise left off. The author left me wanting more, but I will have to wait and see if there is more to the story.... Rylie is just as loveable in this book and she was in the first. This story takes us thru her first year as a faye and all of the changes that go along with it. She is struggling to make both worlds fit into her life and trying to figure how to break the Promise that her faey father made with the king of the dark fairy when she was born.
I highly recommend this book and if you have not read Dark Promise, read it first!
I absolutely love this book. It is the second book in the series It tells the story of Rylie who is a faerie. Broken promise tells the captivating story of Rylie and her ordeal of finding which world she belongs in-Earth or the faere world. There is a lot of conflicts in feelings within herself, her boyfriend Adam, and Kallan; the faere she is promised to. It also involves a physical conflict between Kallan's father and her biological father. This book is great read for any preteen or teen. It's awesome! It leaves you wanting for more
Good book. Not sure if I want to continue reading the series or not. I feel like it could have ended nicely there. The main thing that really annoyed me was how much fairy stuff Riley had "forgotten" since the first book. I understand it's good to retouch on some details in a sequel, I just think it could have been done better. I'd also like to see Riley be more self assertive. She has grown in a way, but the appealing side of the third book is hoping to see her grow and learn more about her powers and the fairy world, with the added bonus of seeing more Kallan. ;)
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. It felt rushed but was a good book also. It's about Rylie deciding where she belongs, she's becoming more of a fairie in this book also. There is a fight between two fathers that kinda helps with her decision. I wasn't a fan of Kallan in this one, he had spunk and personality in the first one, in this one he was all about how much he loved Riley, and not much else. He needed more personality. But other than that it was a good read. I actually read it and book 3 in one day, it's just taken me over a month to get to reviews and the next book.
I absolutely loved Dark Promise and was dying for the second book to be released. Through this story alone, Julia Crane become one of my favourite writers. The book is so well written and the characters are so well established that I'm sucked into the story and can visualise everything happening like I'm watching a movie. Amazing story and characters and I really hope there's a third in the series :-)
