This is an excellent book. It fills in the gaps in one's knowledge of music theory. It might be a little overwhelming for a beginner, but for those with some musical knowledge, it is an excellent resource.
A useful book for music students. Covers the basics of music theory in easy to understand writing.
It's not a book of everthing...it's all about modern, Western music theory.
The reference to the piano being an old instrument isn't correct. It's a little more than 200 years old. Bach didn't know of it because it didn't exist during his lifetime--not what we think of pianos.
I really enjoyed this book because it gave me a lot of insight into music that I had no clue about before. It was also a great addition, accompaniment if you will, to my piano lessons. I'm glad I took the time to read this. It helped me to understand most of the terms that my piano teacher uses. I would definitely recommend this book to friends interested in music.
Much much better than the "For Dummies" book, as it seems to be written for actual musicians-- rather than, say, for dummies. Reading it is reassuring, as I am finding that I actually remember much more than I think I do.
The first sections were very helpful for a beginner, and then it got way too complicated for someone who struggles musically. I think this book is best suited for naturally musical people who just have little to no tangible practical knowledge of music or need a refresher.
