How far will a brother go to protect his little sister? To keep the promise that he made his mother? Will he reach her in time?
These are a few of the questions that came to mind while I was reading the debut book, Initiation, by Author Frannie Marie.
This is a story of love, loss, grief, and revenge.
A young man cares for his sister and trys to protect her from the life he used to live. But life has a way of sneeking back up on you, especially when that life was in a gang. He worries every day about her well-being trying to keep her out of harms way. The night he finally lets her out of his sight so she can have a good time with friends everything goes wrong and he is left to face the demons of his past.
When he finally figures out where his sister is and whose company she is in, he is worried to death. He has to figure out where to go and how to help before time runs out. And they aren't making it easy on him. The only thing he is concerned about is making sure his sister is safe and that she will have a promising future.

“I love them both to death, I don't know what my life would be like without them.”
“I keep telling myself that we knew this day was coming, but now that it's
actually here, I wish it never happened. The day came too fast.”
“Her words were soft and sincere and I could see it in her eyes that she meant what she said, but I don’t know that they were true.”

“I need you to take good care of Leanne for me, please. Also... Collin, I need you to please get out of that gang you're in. Please change your life for the better, Leanne is going to need you more than ever now, baby. Get a job, go to school, anything but being in that gang.”

“I’m uncertain of the truth of that, realizing that there’s something he’s keeping from me, but keep my eyes on the road ahead of me.”

Initiation by Franny Marie is an interesting story and a wild ride to read. The author did an amazing job in the first scene, which showed Collin's mother in the hospital on her death bed, where she tells him to look after his sister and sever ties with his gang. Collin's moral compass is in full display as he obeys his mother's final wish.

The story moves at a rapid pace and jerks the reader from one scene to the next with an abundance of action and eyebrow raising moments. The prose is just as swift as the action and I had no problems visualizing Collin's surroundings. I felt like I was standing next to him the whole time.

When Collin's sister is kidnapped, he spends a few days being idle for a while instead of taking action, and he even had his broken car windows repaired before rescuing his sister, which was a bit confusing. Nevertheless, it's a minor flaw that can be overlooked in the grand scheme of things.

I don't want to spoil too much, but there were more than a few delicious and shocking events in the final scenes which served as wonderful desserts to a good meal of a story.

I enjoyed this novella and I can't wait to see what the author cooks up next.

This short story starts with a punch. Or should I say a tear. After the main characters lose their mother they have nightmares to deal with - but not the kind that only lurk in your sleep. Older brother, Collin, is facing some difficult choices and the author doesn't go easy on him. Which I loved. The brother sister characters did come across as not relatable sometimes but given the roles they each had to play - with Collin playing the guardian...it sort of made sense. I will definitely read the next novella in the series which I believe is being told from the sister's perspective.

Confused

The story was there, the characters were there I'm just no entirely sure what the hell happened...
83 pages of "huh? Did that really just happen?"
The story starts off decent. The MC, Collin, is in the hospital with his baby sister and dying mother, from there everything goes south.
It had potential.

Decent plot, but needed more. Collin just did some pretty unrealistic things. I mean who stops to screw a hooker while searching for his sister, then kills her? No rhyme or reason to the things he did. This just fell flat for me.
