When Rose Wolfe is abducted and locked in a dark cell for countless weeks, she fears she is to become a meal for a soul-stealing demon. She soon discovers that there will be no quick death for her though, because her fate is far worse than she'd imagined: she’s to become the eternal slave of a blood-sucking vampire.
Mir knows he shouldn’t keep Rose as a slave. The witch-vampire treaty is on shaky enough ground as it is, and he’ll be put to death if he’s caught. Besides that, he has no idea what her powers might be. But the blood of a witch is said to taste the sweetest of all, and impulse control has never been his strong suit. The temptation to taste her might be more than he can resist.
This felt like forcing someone to make a cake and then being mad that they’re upset because you gave them a piece so they shouldn’t be mad they should be happy/grateful because they could have just eaten the whole thing. :) (sarcastic smile in case it wasn’t clear).
Basically I liked it until they excused rape and tried making it okay because he forced her but he could’ve been ‘meaner about it’.
Like okay whatever, fantasy fiction whatever. But STOP SHOVING IT DOWN MY THROAT that he is ‘a good guy bc he was a better bad guy than the other rapists :)’
Another kicker is that the rapist male lead isn’t lovable, isn’t good, always thinks of rape rape rape rape rape, and said specifically that he didn’t want to force her but if she didn’t accept his ‘emergency offer’ he would ‘have to’ and not raping her was making him insane….
This is not redeemable. I truly wish there was a better redeemable characteristic he has but this will be getting 1 star if the poor woman doesn’t get to kill the stupidly misogynistic motherfucker.
Like ???? ‘Oh he’s a darker male lead’ okay??? Doesn’t make him any better or likable????? Like ????? It just feels gross and I feel like I had to vomit reading the ‘oh it’s okay bc he forced her with alcohol and drugging to feel good’ like c’mon let’s be for real. If you’re a dark novel, it’s important need to know that and not try to excuse it. It just feels like every character is trying to excuse it which is not okay.
If it would just stay in fantasy-land then that would be better, but this is disgusting as it keeps trying to be like ‘oh it’s okay don’t worry he only raped her gently :)’ like ???? Just accept you’re a dark novel and don’t try to keep shoving that down my throat because I ain’t swallowing.
Another well written book by Soraya Cage, and although it is part of a series, you don't necessarily need to read the first book to understand this one (although it helps when names are brought up). Ella is suddenly captured and sent to the Vampire King on the "Other Side," where she is imprisoned. Her imprisonment is not as I had imagined, it was actually quite luxurious, and it was clear from the go that Mir really liked her, and of course eventually realized he loved her. She plots to escape, but in the meantime also falls in love with him, despite her really not wanting to. This book was lovely as Ella was truly a strong character, who was not willing to put up with toxic behavior. Sometimes books can promote toxic behavior that isn't realistic in real life, or can be very dangerous in real life. The ending was also perfect. Sad in a way, but very understandable. She stood her ground until the end and it's a wonderful reminder to all women to do the same, no matter how much you may love someone. Forgiveness is good, but does not have to be immediate. This isn't as good as the first book, but I still really love it and have read it a few times. The pace, the plot of this story is good. The "Other Side" is also really interesting and creative. If she does continue to write her third novel, I would love to see an update on these characters!
I didn't enjoy this as much as the previous book but having said that it is still an enjoyable read. I particularly liked that it was a bondage/ kidnapping story with a female lead who didn't succumb to her captor and who fought relentlessly for her freedom. Ultimately the book was romantic and emotional but comparatively speaking, it didn't have the emotion and beauty of the earlier book. One small niggle, the repeated use of 'lie' instead of 'lay' throughout was quite annoying.
I don't know how i feel about this book, I remember reading it like 2 years back and it was a good read. However, now that i read it again I must change my rating to 3 stars, because it was no where as great as the first book and wasn't that interesting. I would not read it again, as it isn't my type of book anymore.
