This being the third Matt Coyle book I've read in the last couple of months, the latest one first, I hope it’s obvious that I quite enjoy this series of Rick Cahill P. I. adventures. As its predecessor “Yesterday’s Echo”, “Night Tremors” also takes place in and around La Jolla California, the longtime home of authors Raymond Chandler and Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Even L. Frank Baum lived there for a while. The town got more notoriety when the Beach Boy’s sang about surfing there.

“Night Tremors” was a finalist of the Lefty Award for Best Regional Mystery, a finalist for the Anthony Award for Best Mystery, and a finalist for the Shamus Award, so if that collection of praise means anything others also liked the book. All these platitudes aside, “Night Tremors” a continuation to the Cahill series. I find an extreme amount of affection for, P.I. Moira McFarlane, Cahill’s sometime helper in sleuthing, whom I mentioned in my review of Mr. Coyle’s fourth book “Blood Truth”, which I happened to have read first (I hope Moira appears in the third book also).

As the series continues, we remember that Cahill has quit his restaurant job at the end of the last book to become a P.I. . “Night Tremors” picks up about two years later and our P.I. is stuck doing lowly entry level jobs, such as photographing adulterous spouses, and he is bored. So he is drawn to the case of Randall Eddington. Imprisoned in San Quentin eight years earlier, at age 18, for the brutal murder of his parents and sister.

The investigation is complicated by the involvement of a vicious biker gang, the ethically compromised La Jolla cops, who may have known that Randall was framed, or framed him themselves and Cahill’s own obsessive need to study every aspect of the murder.

The books move at a fast pace and are thoroughly enjoyable. If Mr. Coyle listens to his readers he will give us a book staring Moira’s background and adventures.

Night Tremors!! What a roller-coaster! Fantastic book!! 4.5 Stars!

You could say that Rick Cahill has had it tough. Eight years ago he was accused of murdering his beloved wife. Just two years ago he found trouble again and was forced to kill. So now he stays out of the way - making a quiet living working as a PI, taking photographs of cheating exes. Happy that the job pays the bills - yet yearning for something more, he grabs an opportunity offered to him by an old rival to join him in freeing an innocent man from life in prison. Little did he know the can of worms he would open by taking the case. As it jeopardises not only his job and security, but his life.

I'm just going to start off by admitting that this is the second book in a series, and I didn't realise it! Bad Mel not doing her research!! However I still managed to navigate the story and the characters perfectly well, as the author is an extremely talented storyteller. I probably would have liked to read the first one before this, if only to know Rick a little better, and know the events that happened two years prior, as it doesn't really delve into it too much. But you don't need to have read it. If I can pick it up, anyone can!

Rick Cahill is an AWESOME character. Totally flawed and damaged, yet so lovely and so darn likeable! I was rooting for him the whole time! I thought he was just fantastic! I loved how his head worked, and how he managed to get himself in and out of difficult situations!

All of the secondary characters were awesome! I don't have a bad thing to say about any of the characters, male or female, they were all written so cleverly. I absolutely adored every character! I loved the torturous romantically tense relationship between him and his ex Kim.

The ride that Coyle takes you on is SO MUCH FUN!! I don't know anything about La Jolla or San Diego, but I was taken into a wonderfully atmospheric city which I loved. It was FULL of action!! Not just beat-em-up action, but clever action that helped the story come together all the way to its dramatic conclusion.

So you must be reading this and wondering why I am raving about this book so much but only gave it 4.5 stars instead of 5!!? I shall explain... Two reasons.

1. The title. Night Tremors?? Makes it sound like some creepy scary horror story. I felt the title really didn't have too much to do with the story. I don't think many people who haven't read the blurb or know the author would think that this is a crime action novel. Perhaps aliens or ghosts?? :-)

2. The twist at the end was massive... MASSIVE!!! And I can understand why I have read other reviews of this book saying how awesome the ending was. It was a monster of a twist!!! And it was SO CLEVER!! But for me personally I didn't like it. I cant go into it without spoiling anything, but I just found it such a downer! However that's just me, and everyone else seems to have loved it! I think I had just developed too much of a liking for all the characters involved and then the ending just hit me. Ok no more! Don't want to spoil it!

So much thanks to Oceanview Publishing via Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Retired from the police force, after being charged and acquitted of his wife’s murder, Rick Cahill is now making good money working as a PI snooping on spouses cheating on their partners. Although work is plentiful and the job is safe, he’s more than a little bored and agrees to freelance on a case looking into a man, Randall Eddington, possibly wrongly acquitted of murdering his parents and sisters eight years ago.

This is a fast paced, action packed, gritty steam train of a novel. Once it gets up speed it just keeps going. Rick has to take on an unsympathetic bikie gang, a police force that still thinks him guilty of murder and an unlikely witness. Plenty of scrapes, fights and lucky escapes as Rick navigates his way through this minefield he has got himself into. Although this is the second in the series featuring Rick Cahill, Rick’s character and back story are sufficiently fleshed out that it works well as a stand alone novel. Rick is a very likeable character, a cynical ex policeman who has seen it all and works to his own moral code when it comes to dealing with criminals. The title of the novel refers to Rick's ongoing nightmares from killing a man two years ago (and has little to do with the story itself). The plot is complex and compels you to keep reading through the twists and turns until the final chilling ending. A great read, highly recommended for all crime and thriller lovers! 4.5★

Solid Crime Thriller

Book two of the Rick Cahill series is a solid crime thriller that has Cahill working for the legal defense on behalf of a convicted murderer, seeking to have his conviction overturned. Despite the search for new evidence and new witnesses, it is not a courtroom drama. Motorcycle gangs, drug dealers, corpses, bare knuckles brawls, and rooftop escapes fill this story. It really builds as the story goes on to where it's hard to put down at the end. You really wNt answers to questions at that point.

A special thank you to Oceanview Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Matt Coyle, returns with his engrossing and complex second installment--crime thriller (Rick Cahill #2) NIGHT TREMORS, a fierce comeback, following Yesterday's Echo (Rick Cahill #1) with grit, tenacity, suspense, and intensity. A flawed hero with his own demons; one you will find yourself rooting for, every step of the way.

As we catch up with PI Rick Cahill, presently with La Jolla Investigations, a former cop with La Jolla PD eight years before, who never envisioned his life now as a well-paid camera jockey, cataloging the weaknesses and bad decisions of others. A snoop. A peeping Tom. A private investigator. He now lies, stands, or waits for people to do what they shouldn’t while clicking and capturing their wrong doings. He was good at what he does. Maybe the best in San Diego. After all he is the son of a corrupt cop, and has to live with nightmares of the past every day and night.

Rick had been left with little choices, where eight years prior, he was a young hotshot cop in Santa Barbara. Someone murdered his wife and fingers were pointed at him. Charges were dropped, but he lost his job and out from jail, was working at a bar/restaurant, he hoped to own one day (Muldoon’s Steak House), when he gets tangled up with a reporter and a dark past and dangers from everyone around him. Things go downhill, and now he is forced to go into a different line of work, with his faithful dog, Midnight--starting over.

Presently, an old nemesis asks for his help to free a man from prison. Timothy Buckley, attorney wants him to help with the Randall Eddington murder case. His first thought is to turn it down; however, he needs his help and the grandparents remember Rick, and want him on the case. They are prepared to put their life savings into the case to sure their grandson gets a fair shake. The jury has already found him guilty, so Rick feels the kid got what he deserved. However, as Rick knows all too well, cops make mistakes, and Tony Moretti was the lead detective on the case. This of course, makes Rick take notice.

Bob Reitzmeyer had worked on LJPD for thirty years and ran his own private investigations firm for another eight. Now Rick is asking for some time off to moonlight on another case, freelancing for an attorney. Buckley, the only attorney he trusted, had warned him about Police Chief Moretti and Bob’s relationship. He wanted to do something besides take bedroom clicks. He and his corrupt cop father had left behind a legacy of disgracing the badge. But setting murderers free? God had the grace to forgive. He didn’t.

Jack and Rita Mae Eddington, mid seventies need his help. Their grandson grabbed a golf club one night and beat their son and daughter-in-law to death. He was to help spring a convicted murderer from prison, Randall Eddington? Imprisoned in San Quentin eight years earlier, at age 18, for the brutal murder of his parents and sister, Randall may get a new trial if fresh evidence can be verified. The grandparents want Rick after his fierce tenacity in his former case. They want their grandson set free and want him to uncover new evidence of an eight year old murder case to free their grandson. However, is he guilty or innocent?

What comes next is fast-paced action and danger, as Rick’s driven and intense investigation takes him from the wealthy enclave of La Jolla to the underbelly and dark streets of San Diego. All the while his real job is on the line, and now he has to once again face the man who put him behind bars years ago. (Rick does enjoy living on the edge).

When Rick is faced with enemies and those who will stop at nothing to keep his client’s grandson in prison, Rick once again risks his life to uncover the truth of the real killer, keeping your head spinning with twist and turns around every corner. Main protagonist, Rick Cahill possesses determination, and courage, fighting against all odds, no matter the consequences, and a plot which keeps on ticking!

Matt Coyle is an author to follow, delivering a superb kick-ass taunt crime noir series! After receiving the ARC of Night Tremors, I immediately purchased the audio of Yesterday's Echo (Rick Cahill #1), narrated by Nick Podehl, delivering an exceptional performance. Read both. A series, with and an unstoppable character, leaving you anxiously awaiting the next in this exciting crime series drama.

That was good!
I was expected a bit more of a horror I think, from the title. This was a solid crime thriller.
It was really good though! It had me gripped from the start. It's a really good story, with good characters and good background.
Without giving anything away, there is a twist which completely blind sided me!
Definitely one to look out for!

Rick Cahill returns in Matt Coyle's second novel, Night Tremors. Cahill is still dealing with losing his wife and being accused of her murder when he is drawn into a case which will test his limits. The grandparents of a young man convicted of murdering his family believes there is a new witness which could get their grandson a new trial with his testimony. Their lawyer, someone who Cahill was once at odds with, asks him to meet with the witness to see if he is credible. As Cahill digs further into the background of the witness, the La Jolla police chief does his best to interfere with his efforts. The result is a reigniting of their long running animosity for each other and Cahill's realization that there is indeed a truth that someone doesn't want revealed.

Matt Coyle, winner of the Anthony Award for Best First Novel with Yesterday's Echo, has penned another winner with Night Tremors. Coyle has created a cast of characters that is well-developed and with enough depth to make the reader want to know as much about each character as they can. As a reviewer, this makes a novel much more enjoyable and appealing. The plot is developed enough not to be boring, while at the same time not so complex that the reader becomes frustrated trying to follow it. Coyle is an author to watch and I look forward to future entries in the Rick Cahill series. This book has earned 4/5 stars.

Matt Coyle’s second novel, Night Tremors, is even better than the first book in the series, the Anthony-Award Winning Yesterday’s Echo. PI Rick Cahill is tired of spying on illicit lovers. He wants a case that will make a difference, and he gets one. But Cahill has apparently forgotten, though, to be careful what he wishes for. In Cahill’s world, you only get what you want at a steep price. This is an excellent noir thriller. Go buy Night Tremors—now. You won’t be disappointed.

I found this to be a good read, even though it seems like the protagonist, Rick, is always doing something that'll cause him grief later on. Looking forward to the next in the series, where the choice Rick made at the end may come back to cause him problems.

This was very good. A lot of the character back-story is a hold over from the first book in the series (Yesterday's Echo) and for that reason I found the first couple of chapters a little slow going. I'd read the first book, a while ago though, and my memory ain't what she used to be. Eventually I got myself back up to speed.

Night Tremors pretty much follows the fine tradition of California crime novels. Everyone seems to be working an angle, including the cops who all seem to be bent. And while the author takes you through plenty of twists and turns, he tends to write endings where nobody really "wins" in the end. Oh, your mystery is solved. "Justice" is served. But nobody truly "wins." Which means now I'm thinking my next read should be something suitably light and fluffy.

Matt Coyle follows up his Anthony Award winning Yesterday's Echo with Night Tremors, the second outing for former cop turned low-rent PI Rick Cahill, and it's a wild and wooly read. Coyle is a master at twisting the plot with prose that's sparse, crisp and sarcastic in the best noir tradition. Cahill, suspected by many to have murdered his wife, is a delightfully complex and downtrodden protagonist whose cynicism never quite runs deep enough to keep him out of trouble. He's sick of peeping on cheating spouses, so when an opportunity arises to work on a more meaningful case, he's at first wary, but is ultimately seduced by the lure of freeing an innocent man from prison, an echo of his own past. Thugs, drugs and Harleys. What more could you want? A must read.

Outstanding follow up to the award-winning Yesterday's Echo, Night Tremors picks up two years later with Rick Cahill working for a private detective agency. Bored with snapping sleazy photos of cheating husbands, Cahill longs to sink his teeth into something more substantial. A classic case of be careful what you wish for as Cahill is thrust into the spotlight again. No spoilers here, but I know that Matt is working on the next installation and I can't wait to read it!

I've had this on my Nook for a long time, one of my $0.99 specials, and decided it was time to see if it was any good. It is the second in a series for which I didn't have high expectations, but I have to say, I liked it more than I expected to. In fact, I'd give it 3-1/2 stars and would like to go back and read the first book in the series now.

Rick Cahill has endured many demons in his life. He has to deal with taking a man's life two years ago and being accused of murdering his wife . Rick is a PI doing the dirty work most people cringe at. His job is to take pictures of spouses cheating . It's a job that pays the bills, but not a job he enjoys.
Every waking moment is filled with memories of his wife and the knowledge that someone out there murdered his wife and is walking the streets a free man. When an old acquaintance asks for his help, he jumps at the chance to do something different. The case involves the brutal death of a family. It happened eight years earlier and his friend believes that an innocent man is behind bars for those deaths.

Rick knows what it feels like to be unjustly accused of a crime. He agrees to meet with the grandparents of the accused. Randall Eddington sits in a prison cell insisting he didn't do the crime. His grandparents are willing to do anything to get him set free. A man has stepped forward and says he has proof that Randall is innocent. Rick is suspicious of this witness suddenly turning up after all these years. He decides to visit Randall in prison . He needs to question him, and decide if he is telling the truth. As he is questioning Randall, he starts to believe that maybe he could be innocent.
Rick tell Randall's grandparents that he will take the case. That's when the true adventure begins. Rick will encounter a witness who stays high everyday and a bike gang that has ties to the witness . Everyone is looking for answers but for some , their motives are shocking.

The author has captured the essence of a PI in the character of Rick Cahill. He is determined, gutsy and a thirst for the truth , no matter the cost. You find yourself on a roller coaster ride with Rick that leaves you breathless at times and on the edge of your seat until the very end. As you find yourself glued to the book anticipating the end, a twist appears that has you wondering who the bad guy really is.
I cannot wait till Matt Coyle writes another thrilling book that keeps me guessing till the very last word. If I could give the book more than five stars, I would.

This is the second Rick Cahill book but I read it before "Yesterday's Echo." Switching order made no difference to my enjoyment of these books. Coyle's protagonist, Rick Cahill, is a great character: flawed in all the ways humans are flawed, struggling with his memories of his father and the wife he lost, and yet leaning always on the instinct to do what is right -- if not in the eyes of everyone -- at least his own. He is a refreshing change from the macho guy we so often see in noir novels and film.

Coyle has a sure sense of plotting and brings so much life to the setting, San Diego, that it feels like one of the characters. The story takes Rick to some of the darker sides of humanity and more than once I found myself muttering, "Don't do it, don't do it, Rick." But he always did. And that's what made a great story.

Solid

Rick is tenacious. He does what's right. He trusts few, and it serves him well. He's going against the masses to investigate a past murder, now that new evidence has turned up. How many more will have to die to get to the truth?

I'm hooked on the Rick Cahill series! Coyle's plot lines have the reader thoroughly engaged. His PI has the tenacity of a bulldog to get to the truth and do the right thing even if the law says it is wrong.
Cahill is also a vulnerable character with a lot of humanity. The terror those associated with his victims can be felt as his disillusionment of his past loves and life. Fast paced story with twist at end. Fun location of La Jolla, too, especially for us local So Californians. Highly recommend.

Matt Coyle has done it again! A great read with a strong plot and a well-defined cast of characters. I predict Rick Cahill will be right up there in the ranks with Harry Bosch and Elvis Cole. And the writing is solid and smart. This story will keep you engaged right up to the very end and leave you waiting for more.

Great 2nd novel by Matt Coyle continuing the story of PI Rick Cahill. Set in the backdrop of La Jolla CA, the book is a page turning mystery novel with lots of twists and turns. I started it over the weekend and couldn't put it down until I finished it. I didn't want it to end, but was dying to know how it ended! Looking forward to reading the next Rick Cahill book!

Suspense and intrigue guaranteed.

A suspenseful tale woven with intricate care. Rick has some few too many dead bodies on his conscious. Between drug dealers, gang members, corrupt law enforcement and cold blooded murderers the reader isn't sure what to expect next, not knows it will come with heart racing details.

I received this book as a free giveaway on Goodreads. I must say it had me hooked from page one. A wrongly accused do-gooder PI attempts to solve a nine-year-old murder mystery. I resisted the urge to stay up all night to finish the book and made it last three days. Well done Mr. Coyle.

The followup to his original Anthony Award winning novel is actually better than the first in the series. It is kind of a rogue PI story, fits both into the PI genre but offers new storytelling. I will keep reading this series based on the improvement between the first and second novel.

Interesting twist

The story was good, and kept me turning the pages, even though I didn't read the first book. Apparently Rick carries some horrible baggage from the first book and this story just adds to his woes. The ending was truly unexpected.
