Beautiful Place by the Sea
From the author of Ghost Writing—winner of the 2025 North American Book Awards Gold Medal in Romance and a 2025 Shelf Media Top Notable Indie Book—comes Beautiful Place by the Sea.
Beautiful Place by the Sea is a heartfelt coastal romance set in a small Maine vacation town—complete with a cozy bookshop, a spicy love story that starts off on entirely the wrong foot, and family secrets that refuse to stay buried. It’s about grief and healing, inherited stories, and the places that call us home even when we try to run from them.
At the center of it all is Ivy Parker, a disillusioned school librarian fresh off a devastating breakup. Seeking respite from her life outside Boston, she escapes to the seaside town that has always felt like home. Ivy takes a part-time job at the local bookshop and immediately butts heads with Oliver Clarke, the town’s guarded, infuriatingly attractive bookseller. Their early clashes give way to simmering tension—and before long, feelings neither of them expected.
When Ivy uncovers a decades-old family secret, it reveals unexpected lessons about true love and the choices people make for those they care about. These revelations force her to consider what she truly wants—and as she grows closer to Oliver, they must figure out how to make space for each other without losing themselves in the process.
Beautiful Place by the Sea is a slow-burn romance about second chances, seaside magic, and finding the kind of love that feels like coming home.

Where do I even begin? This book was beautiful. The writing was breathtakingly descriptive. I dont know if I've ever had a book convince me to want to visit a place so easily. The ocean almost felt like a character in itself - one of my favorite lines was "I wonder how many times the Atlantic has watched things fall apart". There's something special about reading a book about characters who love books, Ivy and Oliver working in a bookstore together was so much fun. The storyline also involved some family mystery and it was both devastating and absolutely heartwarming. Everything about this book was wonderful, I fell in love with it more and more each chapter until the very end.

The banter between Ivy and Oliver is pure magic. I was immediately drawn into their story and completely transported to the seaside setting of Ogunquit.
I loved how effortlessly Danielle Smyth wove together the different storylines. Ivy’s family history, Oliver’s past, Grandma’s story, and Laurel’s additional layer all gave the book depth without making it feel overly complicated. I kept reading because I genuinely wanted to know more about every character.
The combination of a bookstore, the sea, family secrets, and a beautifully paced slow-burn romance made this such a cozy and satisfying read. Ivy and Oliver’s chemistry was wonderful, and their banter made every scene between them even better.
Danielle Smyth is officially an auto-buy author for me, and I am already looking forward to Any Port in a Storm, the second book in the Beautiful Place by the Sea series.

The banter between Ivy and Oliver is pure magic-there is no other way to describe it! I was immediately drawn into Ogunquit and loved finding out that it is a real place.
The weaving of various storylines was done effortlessly. I was drawn into finding out more about grandma, Ivy’s family, and Oliver. Laurel’s storyline added another small layer, but I truly hope there is a sequel because I’d love to learn more about her.
As a book lover, the setting of a bookstore, along with the sea, was perfection! If you’re looking for a cozy romantic read for February, then look no further. While not spicy, it will give you the romance vibes you’re looking for, while also pulling you into a great story.

"My cheeks flush despite my overwhelming urge to smack his stupid face"
I mean any book that has that as a quote is okay with me... haha But seriously, Beautiful Place by the Sea surprised me. It was a story with family secrets, with serious banter and tension, with unknown life decisions and change, with getting over an unfaithful ex partner all while finding what you never knew you were looking for.
"I'm pretty sure I've never wanted anything so badly in my entire life as to make him look this happy."
In addition to the banter and tension we had these serious moments and realizations. The FMC had to make choices that would impact both her and the MMC's future. Should she return to the safe boring school where her ex works, take the dream job in a new city, or stay where she...just fits, in the bookstore by the beach.
"Don't let assumptions of how you'll feel scare you off from pursing something that's written in your heart, Ivy."
This was such a good coastal, cozy romance. I loved how they were working in the bookstore and Ivy's cousin was writing a dissertation. Academia - Bookish - Romance? Yes please.
I am looking forward to the next book (Any Port in A Storm) that is actually coming out really soon. They're both interconnected standalones but I loved the characters so much I will be first in line for any more with them!

This is genuinely one of my favorite coastal romances EVER🤩 These characters were so perfectly written, their banter was amazing, and I think Oliver might just be the sweetest book boyfriend ever! This slow-burn romance was simply perfect!
Right away, I was captured by the very first chapter. This book was so beautifully written. I can tell that @danielle.smyth.books put her heart into this story! It is so evident how much Ogunquit means to her!
This is the perfect cozy, coastal romance! I am so obsessed with this story. Its funny, witty, and the perfect mix of romance and family secrets!
This book makes me want to move to Maine and open a cute little bookstore by the coast!
I am so thankful to have received this story as an ARC! It was the perfect, charming coastal romance. Thank you @danielle.smyth.books for your kindness, it has been such a joy to get a glimpse into your world! 🩵

This was such a cute read. Would be perfect for the beach! Brings in the past to the present and how we can always learn valuable lessons from our grandparents even if they have already left us! Great read!

This book reminds me of time at Jekyll Island, GA. Going to the village with my grandparents and cousins. I can feel and understand the life Ivy wanted to retreat to. This was a read I didn’t know my soul needed and came at a perfect time when nostalgia was what I was craving. I enjoyed the generational experience. As mentioned above I have had this with my own family, and I felt it authentically.
The lavender marriage broke my heart but I can also see the beauty that came of it and appreciate that. Danielle out did herself and I look forward to reading more from her.
- This was an arc read for me so I want to thank Danielle Smyth and Astralumen Press for the chance to read early in exchange for my honest opinion.

There is something so comforting about a romance that completely transports you somewhere, and Beautiful Place by the Sea did exactly that. This story feels like a love letter to the Maine coast, to bookstores, to family, and to the idea that healing rarely happens all at once. It is cozy, heartfelt, romantic, and quietly emotional in all the best ways. I finished this book wanting to book a trip to Ogunquit immediately...and maybe open a little bookstore by the ocean while I'm at it.
Ivy arrives in Ogunquit carrying more than just a suitcase. Between heartbreak, grief, and uncertainty about what comes next, she desperately needs a fresh start. A summer working in a charming seaside bookstore introduces her to Oliver, and from their very first interactions I was hooked. Their banter is SO much fun. It's witty, playful, occasionally cheesy in the most endearing way, and full of the kind of chemistry that makes you grin every time they're on the page together. Oliver is such a green flag book boyfriend too. Kind, dependable, quietly romantic, and always showing up for the people he loves. I adored him.
The romance itself is a beautifully paced slow burn. The chemistry builds naturally, the emotional connection feels natural and steadily built, and while there is a little spice, it never overshadows what makes this relationship so special. This is a story built on friendship, trust, healing, and choosing hope again after life doesn't go according to plan. The angst here is pretty low and the relationship mostly soft. While I might have wanted a smidge more yearning or tension, I actually enjoyed how cozy this felt. Oliver's grumpiness is short lived, and then we just lean into the charm. It's very feel good and sweet.
But this book felt like so much more than the romance or charming setting. Ivy's journey of rediscovering herself after such a difficult season felt incredibly genuine and deep, and the family mystery woven throughout kept me hooked. As Ivy uncovers long buried pieces of her grandmother's story, the past and present begin to intertwine in such a beautiful way. I loved how each timeline added new layers without ever feeling overwhelming. Every storyline had a purpose, and each one contributed to Ivy's healing and growth.
Danielle Smyth's writing is so beautiful. At times poetic, effortless thoughtful, and so immersive. The setting is so vividly written that the ocean almost feels like another character, steady, comforting, and quietly witnessing every heartbreak and every new beginning. Between the salty air, cozy bookstore, charming beach town, and endless literary references, this book creates the kind of atmosphere you never want to leave. As a book lover, watching Ivy and Oliver bond over stories while working in the bookstore was honestly one of my favorite parts. WHere is my dreamy green flag book boyfriend book lover?
Beautiful Place by the Sea is exactly the kind of romance I love getting lost in. Emotional without feeling heavy, cozy without sacrificing depth, and filled with characters that feel wonderfully human. It's a story about love, family, second chances, and finding your way back to yourself. By the final page, I wasn't ready to leave Ogunquit or these characters behind. And I'm excited to check out more in this world. (this would also be fantastic on audio)

4.5 ⭐️
Ivy is a school librarian who has had a rough year! She lost her grandmother, her parents separated, and her long time boyfriend cheated on her. She really needs to getaway from it all which is why she decides to go to Ogunquit, their annual family summer vacation spot by the sea in Maine with her cousin Laurel.
She gets a job at a local bookshop for the summer where she meets Oliver. Oliver is a writer and poet who takes care of his disabled dad (and basically everyone else)! He is the epitome of showing up for someone you care about! As they work together and get to know each other Ivy starts to wonder if she could stay in Ogunquit.
In addition to a beautiful love story Ivy is also dealing with a huge family secret. She found her grandmothers diary and when she notices pages ripped out and a big gap in the story of her grandparents lives she begins to dig deeper. She uncovers some devastating truths that ultimately help bring healing and show the lengths someone would go for love!
This was such a sweet love story! I adored it! The bookstore and beach setting, along with the family mystery, made it the perfect read! My favorite parts were the banter (top tier), the setting by the sea, the family mystery, all the book references (this one is definitely for book lovers), and OLIVER!!!! He’s perfect.

I’m not sure I’m ready to write a review as this book emotionally destroyed me in the best way and I need to sit with it.
Beautiful Place by the Sea is so wonderfully descriptive. Even though I am nothing like Ivy, I completely related to her and the very real human emotions that she journeys through. Every feeling that she had is something I’ve faced just with different circumstances. Although I almost wish they were Ivy’s! Witty banter with a literary nerd in a bookshop on the beach?! Sign me up!!
Ogunquit and the ocean become their own characters throughout the book. There are many times when I felt like I was in the town also getting ice cream, dancing with friends, and smelling the brine of the ocean. When Ivy is healing, I was emotionally transported to every time I’ve been healed and comforted by the steadiness and majesty of the world.
This is romance novel with witty banter, green flags, found family, workplace romance, forced proximity and a man who can drive a boat. But it’s also so, so much more. It’s a love letter to Ogunquit, a story of finding yourself, embracing truths, and encouragment to always find a way.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5 stars!)
This story was so beautiful and comforting in the sense that the FMC had a place that was comforting and felt like a home to her that she could come back to anytime since she always visited Ogunquit every summer for majority of her lifetime.
I admire Ivy and Oliver so much they were so fun and precious to read, their meet cute was of course perfect and ending up working in a bookstore together with their banter and tension was MWAH. I also love reading books where the characters also love books so that was perf little touch for me too.
The family mystery of the FMCs grandparents was so intriguing and every-time it came up I was on the edge wanting to find out more exactly how the FMC was wanting answers constantly after reading her grandmas diary. It ended up being so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time and yes I cried because of it.
The romance was so beautiful in this between the characters and I love a good lil slow burn too which I think this book did give me a little bit of that vibe because the tension was SO LOUD. I admire all the side relationships too in this story like Ivy with her sister, Oliver with his dad & Maisie (bookstore owner)
I can’t wait to read the second book that’s coming out September 23rd called Any Port in a Storm with Laurel!! Im so intrigued by her and I want more of her story so I’m excited for this one!!
I recommend reading book one so we ALLL can enjoy book two together when it’s out!! 🤩

What a joy!! Honestly this was such a fantastic read! I may be biased though because I enjoy @danielle.smyth.books they are very romance driven.
So here we go. Ivy Parker has been vacationing at Beach Haven in Ogunquit Maine with her family since she was a child. But this year is a bit different her grandmother has passed away and this will be the first year back just her and her cousin Laurel.
Memories begin coming back after finding her grandmothers diary. While grief sets in a bit there’s so much joy especially at the local bookstore Ivy and her grandmother Eleanor used to visit.
At Shoreline Bookstore Ivy meets Oliver Clarke a seemingly grumpy employee. Great banter and laughter begins with these two 😉
I ABSOLUTELY loved this story it was cozy, funny , and sexy all you could want in a romance. I also liked the mention of Scarlet from By The Book-nice touch! 💙
As well the mystery with Eleanor’s diary. Oliver and Ivy have great chemistry .
I am so looking forward to Laurel and Nicks story
Thanks @beyondthebookspr for having me on this tour

The Beautiful Place by the Sea by Danielle Smyth is a quietly powerful novel that lingers more for its emotional depth than for dramatic plot twists. It’s the kind of book that unfolds gently, inviting you to sit with its characters rather than rush toward a destination.
Smyth’s writing is understated but evocative. The seaside setting isn’t just a backdrop—it mirrors the inner lives of the characters, shifting between calm, reflection, and occasional turbulence. There’s a strong sense of place throughout, with vivid but never overdone descriptions that give the story a grounded, almost intimate feel.
What stands out most is the character work. The novel explores grief, memory, and the complexity of relationships with a lot of nuance. The protagonist’s emotional journey feels authentic, particularly in how it handles loss and the ways people carry the past with them. Relationships—whether romantic, familial, or friendships—are portrayed with realism, avoiding clichés and easy resolutions.

this one right here kept me entertained and deeply in tune with the characters and the storyline.
if there is one thing i love more than anything is a character driven story. every plot contributed to ivy growing as a charcter which made me eat the story up more.
ivy and oliver have this tension from the moment they meet, it's an obvious start of constant banter and flirting-mainly from his part.
this one showed raw emotions and see ivy go through the motions of grief, a breakup, and finding out what she wants with her life. we see growth, love, and family mysteries come to life.
we also see oliver going through his own battles, through how much he tells ivy. we see his own growth and his artistic value which in tune goes with how he wants his future to go.
these two were truly book lovers and seeing them talk about books, bringing them to outings, sharing favorites was some of my favorite moments. any book lover could relate to them in those moments.
this story has nostalgia for the ivy. it touches on grief, heartbreak, love, and finding your place and true passion.

✨Beautiful Place by the Sea-Danielle Smyth
Ivy has spent every summer of her life vacationing with family in Ogunquit, Maine. The quaint seaside town holds her most cherished memories, days by the ocean surrounded by her parents and extended family. But after a devastating breakup, the separation of her parents, and the loss of her grandparents, Ivy finds herself untethered. Longing to recenter and reconnect, she returns to the place that has always felt like home. Spending the summer in Ogunquit with her cousin Laurel feels like the healing she desperately needs, a way to hold her family close again.
Of course, no summer escape would be complete without a little romantic turmoil.
Enter Oliver, the sarcastic, music-loving, perpetually cranky employee at one of Ivy’s most treasured seaside spots. Their first meeting is anything but smooth, yet their sharp banter quickly becomes one of the story’s highlights. What begins as irritation slowly unfolds into something deeper, and Ivy discovers that love may find her when she least expects it.
While there, Ivy reads a diary she discovered after her passing. As she works through its pages, she uncovers fragments of her grandparents’ past that raise more questions than answers. Determined to understand a hidden layer of their love story, Ivy pieces together clues, never anticipating that she may unravel the biggest secret of all.
There was something magical about this book. The salty ocean air, the warm sun, the cool, cozy evenings along the shore enveloped me. Danielle Smyth writes as though she is painting a vivid coastal portrait, each sentence layered with love, anguish, and longing. Her prose feels immersive and heartfelt, drawing me so fully into the story that the characters seemed real, as though I might run into them in my own world.
This story is dreamy, comforting, quietly emotional, steeped in a seaside atmosphere, family secrets, banter, and enemies-to-lovers set against a charming bookstore backdrop. Smyth writes a love letter to coastal towns and the memories that keep us returning to them.
This ARC was a gift to read. Thank you!

Thank you!
Beautiful Place by the Sea releases February 13.

Beautiful Place By The Sea by @danielle.smyth.books was absolutely incredible 🌊 breathtaking even. If you love slow-burn romances, seaside magic, second chances and finding a love so deep that feels like home.. this is absolutely the book for you 🤩 It’s set in a small-town in Maine and follows the story between Ivy, a school librarian and Oliver, a grumpy, book-loving bookseller. Ivy is dealing with heartbreak and grief and goes back to her family’s home in Maine in hopes to help her heal. She immediately clashes with Oliver and their enemies to lovers romance buds as they have the wittiest banter back and forth. And the chemistry?! YES!!!
.
I loved the combo of the coastal / bookstore setting - it just felt so cozy and magical 🌊
.
Looking forward to reading the next in the series called Any Port In a Storm! Thank you @beyondthebookspr & Danielle for gifting me with this early ARC!

I received this book as an ARC, and all thoughts are my own.
Beautiful Place by The Sea was such a beautiful, heartfelt read. I absolutely loved the coastal setting ; It felt cozy, atmospheric, and so vividly written that it truly came alive on the page.
This is a slow-burn romance done right. The relationship develops naturally, with plenty of emotional depth, making the payoff feel earned rather than rushed. I really appreciated how the story weaves together romance with themes of grief, healing, and second chances.
The setting plays a huge role in the story and honestly felt like a character itself, adding so much warmth and charm. Overall, this book left me feeling emotional, comforted, and completely satisfied.
A 4.5-star read for me, and one I’d highly recommend to fans of slow-burn romances and seaside stories that linger with you long after you’ve finished. 💙

This has been the 4th book that I've read of Danielle's. Like all of the others, this is so good! When I saw the opportunity to sign up for this book tour, I immediately ran to sign up and I'm so glad I did.
Her writing, as always, is amazing! The setting, a bookstore at the beach, sounds heavenly. The banter is witty from the beginning between Ivy and Oliver, it made me giggle just waiting for these two to be together.
I think this book really gets you to think about cherishing the time you have with your grandparents and remembering them once they have passed. I liked seeing Ivy be able to have the opportunity to read Eleanor's journal entries. That was really beautiful.
I really loved seeing the references to the Ghost Writing series. The new cover looks amazing, I can't wait for Laurel and Nick's story in book 2, Any Port In A Storm.

Would I Recommend?: Yes 100%
WOW 😍 This book was so cute and charming. I loved the setting of Ogunquit and the coastal charm of the small vacation town. It reminds me of my favorite place to visit in the summer.
Not so Meet cute in a bookstore, what more could you ask for. The banter between Ivy and Oliver is so good and watching them slowly recognize their feels for each other was so sweet. I loved the secondary plot of the grandparents story and the discoveries they Ivy finds along the way.
This book comes out February 13th and I can’t wait for you all to take a trip to Ogunquit with this wonderful book!

I absolutely fell in love with this book! From the first chapter, I was pulled into Ogunquit, and discovering it’s a real place made the story feel even more special. The seaside bookstore setting was pure comfort, especially as a book lover.
Ivy and Oliver’s banter is honestly magical—funny, warm, and effortlessly charming. Oliver might be one of the sweetest book boyfriends I’ve read in a while. Their slow-burn romance isn’t exactly that spicy, which I like, yet it delivers all the cozy, heartfelt moments you’d want. Beyond the romance, I loved how the story weaves in Ivy’s family struggles and her grandmother’s mystery. It added real emotional depth and kept me invested.
Overall, it’s a cozy, emotional coastal romance with heart, humor, and just the right touch of mystery.

My ARC Review.
A beautifully written coastal romance. From page one I was drawn into Ivy and Oliver's story. Their banter with each other sucked me in. In Beautiful Place by the Sea you will learn of some family secrets, dance halls, Shoreline bookstore and so much more!
Ivy's memories and the relationship that she had with her grandmother reminded me so much of the relationship that I shared with my own grandmother.
I hope you will pick up Beautiful Place by the Sea and find your own way home, whatever that may be to you.

This was a wonderful story, perfect for closing out summer. Love the dynamic between Oliver and Ivy, the bookstore setting, and all the apprentiation for books and stories in here. The family mystery and diary also had me hooked. A really enjoyable slow burn, contemporary romance.
Audio: Maeve James and Dan Smyth did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. The banter was a top tier part of the narration. I love all of the nuanced things Maeve does what she narrates--small inflections, different pacing, you can almost hear the smile in her voice. Would listen to these narrators again and again!

4⭐️ I bought this book on my recent trip to Ogunquit at the Perkins Cove book store because I wanted a souvenir book to bring home. I was pleasantly surprised to find this novel, based right in Ogunquit- the place that had so recently won my heart with its adorable charm. This is a really cute romcom that also tells a story about a family’s secrets, which adds mystery and complexity to an otherwise fluffy and atmospheric story. I really loved the descriptions of Ogunquit (except the author taking liberties with sunset/ the beach doesn’t face west 😣) and it was nice to relive my own memories of the trip while sharing in the character’s experiences. Glad I picked it up. :)

So happy to have been able to read ARC! The setting of this book, in the coastal town of Maine, at the beach house, and at the local bookstore - just made me have all the summer feels! As someone who has been to Ogunquit and spends my summers on Cape Cod, I could imagine it all perfectly! And I LOVED Oliver and Ivy! The story was perfect and cute in all the right ways, and I didn’t expect a twist of the family drama but that was great too! Definitely I recommend grabbing a copy of this lovely book!

This went from a 3.5 star read to a 5 star read in the last 30%. What a gorgeous rendition of love. It was a beautiful setting, a perfect cinnamon roll mmc, and wonderful side characters. The bookstore setting and coastal vibe was delish, and I loved the progression of the relationship. The grandparents and parents stories ended up being one of my favorite parts by the end. I can't believe that I thought I knew how I felt about this book halfway through, and then it completely moved to the absolute next level. This was so sweet I have cavities. Ugh...love love love.

I loved this story! It was so romantic and pure that I just couldn’t put it down.
The story between Oliver and Ivy had me in a chokehold with the banter, plus you almost get 2 stories in 1 with finding out about her grandma. I love how it makes you believe in love.
It was the perfect read, it was warm and almost magical ❤️
I will definitely be recommending this book!
Thank you to Danielle Smyth and BookSirens for letting me read this arc and I’m leaving my thoughts voluntarily.

I absolutely love this. This is the perfect summer read to get lost into. The banter between Ivy and Oliver was sweet, sassy, and intense. And honestly, what reader doesn't want to work at a bookshop by the beach? Ivy was living my dream! Danielle Smyth has such a way with words to describe the scene so well, you feel like you're there. This storyline was coastal cozy with such relatable characters; I cannot wait to see what she writes next.

This is one of my favorite books ever. The setting is gorgeous and felt like pure magic. Oliver is book boyfriend perfection; so sweet and smart and supportive. Ivy is my spirit animal, I think. I loved the journey she went on and the secrets she uncovered. The book theme of this story was also perfect for me, and I really loved how emotional the whole book was. The chemistry with Ivy and Oliver and also off the charts. Loved it.

Another 5* read from Smyth! Ever since I read GW I knew this author would end up in my auto buy list & after this second read by her, I can confirm. I love that her books are always filled with family drama & a character is always trying to uncover why. It makes it so easy to relate to. Her characters always grow so much & I fall in love with every last one. I loved Laurel so much in this one & can't wait to read her story next!
