This volume was so funny!

I love Mika so much that sometimes I feel like I don't give Yuu enough attention, but I do love him very much!

Yuu is freaking amazing, sweet and protective. His loyalty and his love for his family, friends and comrades is the most beautiful thing ever!! Yuu is just so genuinely good and nice. I love him.

The way that he NEVER gives up on Mika makes me love him even more.

I love Shinoa! I really, really do but I fucking HATE when she touches Yuu!

Can she please stop touching him, holding his hand and looking at him with that I think I'm in love" kind of look?

Please just stop this! Make Shinoa and Mitsuba canon and stop trying to mess with Mikayuu!!!

Mikayuu is canon, OTP and endgame. No arguments can be made against it.

The art is absolutely stunning, and at first this story felt kind of old (like I had read it somewhere before), however, later on towards the middle I just began falling in love with the characters and the plot and it’s just *chefs kiss* 💞💞

I was slightly confused, but that’s because I have not read books 1-4 yet :0 I NEED TO DO SO NOW!!

Not an awful lot happened in this volume, but we did get some insight into the way their cursed gear works. I think my main issue with this series is the characters; I find most of them quite annoying and difficult to really care about. Yu’s getting somewhat less hot-headed about everything and they’re finally accepting of each other as teammates, but I still dislike and don’t trust Guren or the rest of the higher-ups (apart from Shinya ^-^). Hopefully we’ll get some more vampire action soon, since I find them much more interesting as characters...

I’ve finished the book, now time to review:

First, Yu and Mitsuba are called in by the Hiragi family for some kind of interview. Mitsuba was promoted because she comes from a politically powerful family, but Yu was called in for other reasons. Mainly, the Hiragi family believes Yu is a vampire spy because of his relationship with Mika, which is a very stupid assumption considering everything Yu has done for the Moon Demon Company and these so called vampire-slayers in general. They threaten Yu with Yoichi and Kimizuki, and more specifically, stab them each in the shoulder in an effort to get Yu to talk, only Yu is still telling the truth by saying he is not affiliated with the vampires in any way. They also test his abilities and spar with him, which leads us to discover that Yu is not yet at his full potential, and needs to find out if Asuramaru (his demon) is a possession or manifestation type demon when used in battle. Putting that aside for now, they eventually believe Yu because he killed a vampire they threw at him, and their continuous prodding didn’t give them the answers they wanted. I think they’re still suspicious of him, and it’s even worse because they’re on opposing sides with Guren. They may hate and suspect Yu more because of Guren, if I’m thinking about this in the right way.

Yu also finds out that the orphanage he belonged to was just a ploy for human experimentation on innocent children who didn’t know any better. Yu was subject to that experimentation, explaining his outburst of power in the previous volume. I think they called it “Seraph of the End?”. After the confrontation with the Hiragi family, Yu asks Guren if he was truly using him the whole time because that is what the Hiragi family told him. Guren admits he only saved Yu because he thought his powers might be useful, and expects Yu to be mad. Yu isn’t mad because despite the reasons, he wouldn’t he alive without Guren. He only asks that Guren help him retrieve Mika should Mika be useful too since he came from the same orphanage. Guren seems to agree although he doesn’t directly say it, and leaves Yu to be coached by Mitsuba and Shinoa to further his demonic powers if I’m using the right terms. Actually, his cursed powers is probably the more correct way to say it. Yu is told his demon is likely a possession type, like Guren’s. When he attempts to let the demon possess him, he passes out. The process could take up to 20 hours according to Shinoa and he may go on a rampage at any time during the process. While Yu is out, Kimizuki questions the entire squad, asking them if they really consider themselves to be family. If they do, he suggests they truly tell Yu about his outburst in the previous volume because Yu doesn’t remember it even though he almost killed Shinoa. Kimizuki suggests that if that’s not the case, then he’ll stay quiet about it for his sister’s sake and will keep playing at their family game. Shinoa can tell Kimizuki is being like this because he is a kind person, and promises that they’ll tell Yu everything once he wakes up.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that Shinoa’s dead genius sister who developed the cursed gear was Guren’s former lover, and she seems to have been killed by him because her research drove her mad or something along those lines. Apparently her sister turned into a demon who currently possesses Guren. Technically, her sister is the demon inside Guren’s cursed gear. I can’t tell if Shinoa was angry at Guren or not when she found out, but she reveals she was not close to her sister, and Guren reveals that her sister is dead and will not come back. Even if her demon possesses his gear, he is completely in control of it. I look forward to seeing what will happen next with this. Also, Shinoa warns Guren against doing anything hurtful to Yu. In a way, she admits that she has feelings for him although not directly. We can also tell through this volume that Mitsuba likes Yu as well, which I was already suspecting. Yu is an airhead that leads both of them on because he treats them like family, but so far it doesn’t look like he feels anything romantic for either of them. That’s good for me because I’m not here for cheap romance. Actually, who am I kidding because I literally ship Yu with Mika… AHEM. Anyway, that’s as far as the romance goes in this manga series.

I think I summed up the entire volume. That’s all that went on as of yet. Like I said, hopefully there will be no romantic development if it’s with Shinoa or Mitsuba. I’d rather do without it to be honest. I ship Kimizuki with myself, and dang Yoichi is cool for figuring out how to use his cursed gear on his own. To be honest, he seems to have himself together the most, which is good. We need at least one stable character in this series. Kimizuki and Yu are still struggling which is funny considering they’re rivals but they’re struggling with the same exact thing right now. I don’t know how I feel about Guren. I mean, yeah he’s hot but I need more reasons than that to like him. I don’t like how he’s using Yu and he seems to have done something sketchy to Shinoa’s sister as well. I guess we’ll know in full what he did later on.

Anyhow, thank you for tuning in this far and happy reading! Even better if you check out this manga series!!

This volume is mostly focused on Yu, and his new life-goal: Getting Mika back! The first scene finds him actually studying for once, scouring the spellcraft library hoping to find information on how to turn a vampire back into a human. He – and the reader – also learn a bunch of new information about how the cursed gear weapons work. But the touching scene between Yu and Mika in the last volume has drawn the suspicions of the higher-ups in the Imperial Demon Army (who already suspected they had a mole) and…yeah, on my first read, it was their behavior here that made me notice the SS-like design of the human army’s uniforms!

Favorite moments (spoilers, obviously):
- Shinoa tells Yu it is rare for vampires to turn someone and that only nobles are allowed to do so. Yu immediately concludes that Ferid was the one to turn Mika – which is only halfway right, but a reasonable assumption given Ferid’s prior actions. [Shinoa] “So now you’ll charge off to slay those hated bloodsuckers, I assume?” [Yu] “Nah. Mika’s alive. For now, that’s all I need.” [Shinoa] “You’ve suddenly become almost mature! Is it because now you have a different reason to live?” Yep. Well spotted, Shinoa.
- Later, Shinoa spots Yu staring off into the distance and teasingly asks if he spotted a girl changing through a window. [Yu, confused] “Huh? Why do you keep bringing up stuff like that?” He was looking west toward the vampire city, because that’s where Mika must be. Obviously! He swears that someday he’ll go get Mika back…and that, when it’s time, Shinoa should come too. Because they’re friends, right*?
- When Guren confesses that he did actually take in Yu because being part of the Seraph of the End experiments meant he might be a useful weapon, Yu, weirdly, doesn’t mind. Because what he hears is that he and Mika would probably be useful to the army…and that means Guren might help him get Mika back, might even be willing to make a place even for a vampire. This is not very smart on his part, but it is touching!

*Actually, the language choice here is interesting. The character profile at the start of the manga describes Mika as Yu’s “best friend”, but Yu never actually calls him that, nor does he ever say they are “like brothers” (though the younger orphans did call them big-brother Yu and big-brother Mika). If he has to describe their relationship he always just says Mika is “my family” (which is the language the Shinoa squad uses to describe Mika’s relationship to Yu as well). Yu will start calling his squad members family as well soon, but will also refer to them as friends. It should also be noted that the character profiles aren’t 100% reliable; the first one described Mika as dead, but that was just what Yu and the reader would have assumed at the time.

Another interesting thing I realized here… There is some lack of clarity on the gender of several of the demons. Shinoa refers to her demon, Shikama Doji, as “she” here. But later, when we actually see Shikama Doji, he looks more like a “he," and is referred to as such by other characters. On the other hand, on the first watch of the anime I assumed Guren was just making assumptions in referring to Yu’s demon Asuramaru as “he,” because they look very feminine (tiara, backless gown, long flowy hair) and, indeed, most anime-only fans tend to refer to the demon as “she”. It is eventually revealed that Asuramaru was AMAB when human, but I’ve noticed that the demon never seems to use gendered language to refer to themself, and Yu – the person who knows them best – doesn’t either, so I’m going to go with “they” unless the author decides to have Asuramaru clarify that point explicitly at some point!

Oh, we finally learn more about the weapons and demons! \o/ I like that they got explained a bit (even though some new questions popped up) and that we also got to know a bit more about the structure of the military. I'm just curious what Guren's plan is (I don't trust him.).

I also like that Yu is starting to be a teammate. :)

That ending with Mika saying that he is so thirsty? *meep*

NOW we're getting into some interesting storylines here. The plot of this story has picked up with these last two volumes, and now I'm completely bummed I can't keep reading. Once the entire series is out, I will definitely be coming back to read this.

Yoichi was on the cover so I was super happy <3 He's my favorite character. And Guren is pretty studly. And the girls have some pretty bad ass weaponry.

I really enjoyed this volume too. Kagami-san seems to have a creative head on his shoulders, and Yamamoto-san's artwork matches the story pretty well. I really can't wait to read the rest of this series!!

So, apparently this volume's sole purpose was to establish that the Hiragi family (sans Shinoa) is a bunch of assholes. Oh, and Shinoa wants to kick Guren's shit because his curse gear is harboring her dead sister, which possesses him. A lot. Because, you know, why not right? Oh, and Yu and Kimizuki are training to have their demons possess them. As you do. Oh, and Shinoa and Mitsu had a really cool and interesting conversation that revealed quite a bit about the Hiragi family, but mostly that the family is filled with assholes. Shocker.

I honestly don't know what else to say, that's pretty much it.

Yoichi (the guy on the cover) has little screen time and it is unacceptable. T.T

I like the fact that Yuu is so blaised on how people are trying to use him. He is all for it as long as he can get what he wants which is Mika. Everything he does is for Mika anyway so it's not really surprising. Take that Shinoa and I forgot the tsundere's name.

The battle at Shinjuku is over, but the plot shows no sign of slowing down. Not with the sinister Hiragi family and its leader, Kureto Hiragi, showing a special interest in Yu, an interest that involves interrogating him while torturing Youichi and Kimizuki in order to uncover Yu’s secrets. Members of the elite family lines Hiragi and Sangu are spared such rough treatment, but Shinoa and Mitsuba are well-aware that the upper ranks of the Imperial Demon Army are watching Yu and all of his team members. Yu’s new family may be endangered if those ranks don’t like what they see. To make matters even more complicated, Guren is making claims of his own of ownership over Yuichirou, which Yu isn’t sure what to make of, given what he’s seen of the tension between Guren and his superiors in the military. Yu, however, wants Mika back. In order to retrieve his beloved friend from the vampires who’ve claimed him, he’ll have to get stronger. Guren, however, while saying he’s willing to help Yu, is showing an ambivalent attitude towards training him and the other new recruits. It’s clear that Yu’s mentor and surrogate father figure has dark secrets, something Shinoa is becoming more and more aware of. Determined to make her team stronger, she and Mitsuba lead Yu, Kimizuki, and Youichi out into the desolate landscape beyond the city walls where they can learn how to truly use their cursed gear. The location they choose, however, is crawling with monsters. In addition to those threats, there’s the menace of the cursed gear themselves, whom show an appetite for their users’ blood which rivals any vampire’s.

Kureto Hiragi is introduced in this volume and his creator has reason to proud of this complex, ruthless, yet blunt and direct antagonist. He’s definitely someone who moves the plot forward, gives the protagonists something to strive against, yet one can understand his motivations at once. His rivalry, yet struggle for control with and over Guren is quite intriguing, even it spills over to include the boy Guren has chosen to adopt and train. Shinya, on the other hand, is more enigmatic, yet never fails to intrigue this reader in the panels where he appears. I’d liked what I saw of him before in the manga and he was one of the strongest characters in the first of the Guren novels, so it was intriguing seeing the part he played in this volume. I suspect Shinoa got her playful sense of mischief from Shinya. Shinoa developed further in this book as a character, giving us a glimpse of the tragic family background she’s already alluded to in her reaction to Guren’s cursed gear. Her relationship with Mitsuba deepened, as the two girls showed a touching synchonicity in their determination to educate and train their team in using their weapons while keeping a wary eye on the upper ranks, even while they continued to snipe at each other. The similarity between Shinoa and Mitsuba’s backgrounds and how they reacted to the priveleges attached to them was fleshed out further, adding dimensions to them as characters. The two girls also had some sweet moments with Yu as each intensified their bond with him along with each other in their determination to protect him, yet push him to get stronger. Equally sweet was Kimizuki’s speech to Shinoa about Yu’s power and keeping it a secret from him, how it didn’t set well with him. Being tortured shook Kimizuki up, yet he remains determined to stay with the Imperial Demon Army for his sister’s sake, yet he’s becoming more and more attached to his new family. Youichi, whom started out this volume being a victimized along with Kimizuki in a very tense scene, got a chance to show some impressive new skills and strengths which were gorgeous and striking in the panels where they appeared. Yu spent a lot of time revealing that he remains a wide-eyed innocent, even as he learns and grows from what the other characters have to teach him, even while he’s exposed to the sinister side of the organization he’s a part of. Most disturbing of all was the dark aspect to Guren, the man who’s become the closest thing Yu has to a father. In spite of being tested, Yuichirou discovers once again his courage and convinction, getting closer to his new family and while remaining determined to rescue his old one. Poor Mika looked like he was bad need of saving, for all he’s set upon doing the saving himself, since he’s not about to abandon Yu to an organization which appears to be justifying some of his fears in this volume. My heart went out to Mika in the few panels he was in, which depicted in heartbreaking beauty the turmoil he’s going through. Overall, this story was gripping, exquisitely drawn, and built on what had been created before, making an increasingly complex and intriguing ongoing tale overall. The characters continue to deepen and steal my heart, leaving me eager to see more of them. For all of these qualities, I give this four stars.

3.5/5, brought up to 4/5. I love the development and fleshing out of the human groud side of the Seraph of the End since compared to the vampires I initially found it more plain. While I do feel like there could have been more "spice" through more action or more artistic "wow" moments added the story (and world) really ramps up to make this a good read.
At this point I think its clear that Seraph of the End is similar to Pandora Hearts. Both are what I would call mystery-action series. The focus is on the world building and the multiple character interactions, relationships, and mysteries with action interspersed in.
This is a very dialogue heavy volume. Very little action occurs and that which does is fleeting. But with all of this dialogue we get lots of development in this volume from new and old plot lines such as All of these development create a lot of interest especially in regards to
The art is really solid but the means there are few "big" scenes to really let Yamamoto go to town and amaze. The action and big art moments that are here are top-notch. Sometimes they feel crowded in by the paneling to fit more exposition panels though. The real standout for the art this volume are the moments with the demons. Yamamoto gives them this almost blurry washed out effect along with a gradiented dotted screentone to make them standout as otherworldly compared to the crisp, edged, and outlined art used for the human characters.

Seraph of the End Volume 5 slows things down just a bit after the intense vampire battles in the previous volumes—and honestly, I really liked the shift in pace. It gives the characters room to breathe, and the story more space to expand its world. There’s still tension and action, but this volume leans more into internal conflict and setup, and it works.

Yu’s loyalty is clearly being tested more and more, especially as he keeps Mika’s survival a secret. Watching that emotional conflict simmer under the surface is one of the strongest aspects of the volume.

We also get a deeper dive into the cursed gear, which was one of my favorite parts. Learning more about how these weapons work, the spirits that reside within them, and how users bond with them gave us a much better understanding of the magic system and how high the stakes are when using it. It’s dark, dangerous, and really well explained here without bogging down the pacing.

On top of that, we get small but intriguing glimpses into the Moon Demon Company’s hierarchy and the high-ranking families that seem to pull the strings. These nuggets of political and military structure hint at a much bigger, more complex world, and I’m excited to see how it unfolds—especially the part about how humans managed to push back against the vampires using cursed gear in the first place.

Visually, the art remains incredibly sharp and stylized. Every panel feels sleek and dramatic, with dynamic action scenes and emotionally charged character art. The attention to facial expressions adds a ton of impact. Plus, the banter continues to be a highlight—thanks in part to the way the text is styled. The playful shifts in font and layout during dialogue make the characters’ sarcasm, sass, and tension even more engaging.

Overall, Volume 5 might be lighter on action, but it’s richer in character development and world-building. It’s a necessary and rewarding breather before the next storm.
