I don’t think I loved this one as much as some of the previous ones just because of my irrational hatred of Mizuki, who’s on like every other page. I can’t stress this enough - I don’t care about Mizuki, stop trying to make me care about him. I do think his friendship with Shu is compelling and should’ve been focused on a little more if you’re gonna do a Mizuki-centric volume but that’s just me. Mizuki protecting Shu when they were kids and Shu spending the rest of their lives trying to return that favour - no wonder he puts up with Mizuki’s shit the way that he does. (Also, baby Shu and Mizuki are adorable, I deserved more flashbacks of them.)

“Last night was fun. Sorry to surprise you with my feelings, but it was all true.” - NOT A GOOD MORNING EMAIL MIZUKI WTF?!
Mizuki basically ambushing Hime with a date is insane behaviour, but I can’t say that I’m surprised. Him springing his feelings on her, causing her to spiral and start replaying every interaction she’s ever had with him… say it with me now: ‘if Mizuki has no haters it means I’ve been erased from existence because I would absolutely continue to hate him in the afterlife’.
Also, yes I hate the idea of Mizuki and Hime together, but their scene with the fireworks was really cute, especially when Mizuki actually says that he likes her - the way that Hime was drawn against a backdrop of fireworks and people, it’s so good, I can imagine exactly how this would play out in an anime.

My scattered thoughts on the HimexSenri (but mostly Hime) side of things.
-Hime pulling off this dramatic ass entry just to give Shu his mic is so iconic of her. (Be nice to her now you asshole, we’re literally at the end of the series.)
-“Why didn’t I fall for Mizuki?” - that really is such a good question because despite my own personal hatred for Mizuki, Hime had every reason and opportunity to fall for him, and she didn’t
-“Just when work takes off… I get popular with boys too?!” - Oh Hime, it must be so tough to be you… Okay, all jokes aside, Hime deserved to kick the shit out of that asshole who was harassing her, but Senri scaring him shitless was good too. (You know what, I hope Mizuki gets wind of this because one thing I can always count on him for is to have Hime’s back.)
-HE’S CARRYING HER HOME!!! OH SHIT, HE’S CARRYING HER HOME!!! (I want to know how Hime got away with hiding her living situation for so long.)
-Nah hold me back I’m about to murder Hime’s mom. (Hime, sweetheart, you do not need that devil woman’s approval.)
-Aw, he’s using Kazuma’s acting exercise on Hime.
-Yamada is such an interesting character because sometimes I’m not even sure if I like him all that much. I started the volume calling him an asshole because what do you mean you’re tricking Hime into a job?! Then I ended off by saying he’s a good dad and I love him???
-Not a bonus comic of Fujimori instantly figuring out that Hime is Shiro right after a Catherine’s Diary of her calling Senri an idiot for not figuring it out yet. (I like to imagine Hime and Fujimori are still close.)

Despite the Mizuki of it all, this volume was still enjoyable and obviously very significant for not only Hime and Senri’s relationship, but also the love triangle that’s not really a love triangle because Mizuki’s just been down bad for Hime this entire time while Hime and Senri have been trying to heal from their trauma and somehow become friends in the process.

Also, Sakura Aoyama is a nutjob.

THE GOOD

Hime/Shiro and Senri; Watching Senri and Hime grow closer in this volume was a fantastic thing. We finally see Senri coming out of his shell, and I'd be lying if seeing him save Hime from that stubborn guy wasn't something I loved.

Mizuki: I love him. I feel bad for him, but HimexSenri is just... my life.

THE BAD

boy: That boy who was hitting on Hime very aggressively got on my nerves a lot. Thankfully he was the only bad part of this volume.

For as much as I liked Voice Over!, I’ve also been fairly honestly about finding some volumes to be filler—enjoyable filler, but still enough to worry about “So how much of this are we going to deal with before getting back to the plot?” While I think that the earlier volumes of this series fell prey to that (and ended up peppered throughout the rest of the series), I do think that coming into the final arc of Voice Over!, Minami Maki’s been able to focus the progression of plot back on track.

One of the more frustrating elements that I’ve had is the whole conceit of Hime-pretending-to-be Shiro to start getting voice acting work, because it really just felt like it was there for wacky cross-dressing hijinks for most of the series. (I also finished out the series, and I still don’t know what Yamada P.’s intentions were supposed to be? I’ll get to that in the next volume.) I do like the fact that Hime/Shiro is finally able to come into the spotlight with this volume, with the inclusion of the AQUA single and the immense popularity she’s found with her Cruel Octalia character. (I kind of want an anime for Voice Over now. Partially because I want to see if it becomes popular and Cruel Octalia becomes a thing, mostly because I need to experience that AQUA single and MV and the concert performance in all of its ridiculous glory. Somebody get on this.)

I also really liked this volume because it puts the nail in the coffin for the love triangle that’s been brewing over the entire series. I’m personally still Hime/Mizuki (because I think there’s a much healthier relationship there), but I do like the fact that it gets quietly resolved with a minimal amount of drama for both Hime and Mizuki. I liked that they’re both going to remain friends, and that Mizuki helps Hime figures out her feelings for Senri and what to do with her professional career. It is obvious how that story was going to end, but I’m satisfied with how it ended, instead of just nuking Mizuki’s feelings because he’s not the Designated Love Interest.

We also get the lead-in to the final arc here, with Hime finally getting the chance to work with Sakura Aoyama on a project that will also be her last one as Shiro. Again, I really wish that we got more backstory with Yamada P as why he does the things that he does, because there are moments that imply a major backstory there, but we never get an explanation for it. (See also Director Yajima’s first appearance with the whole “Yes, there was another actress like her…” I know it’s a well-worn anime/manga trope to add in “Ah, yes backstory connections which are obvious but we will NEVER expand on them,” but for once in a while, just give us an answer.)

I still do like this series, and once I got to the end and saw the beginning for the final arc, I was excited to finish the volume and immediately move on to the final one. And I still think that it’s a cute series, even with the padding. I think that this is definitely one of the better volumes (not just for the massive spectacle of the AQUA concert, although not going to lie that was one of my favorite parts), and it made me really excited to get to the final volume.

In Summary

Voice acting takes a backseat to high school romantic angst. Hime’s alter ego reaches a new level of success, but the real focus of this volume is her personal relationships with Senri, Mizuki, and even Shuma. She may be a professional in the voice acting world, but she’s provides plenty of shojo fluster as she deals with first dates and confessions.

The Review

Senri dominated the previous volume, and as if to make up for it, AQUA takes the spotlight (quite literally) in this volume. Yamada finally thinks the time is right for fans to get a look at Shiro and arranges for her big reveal to take place with the idol duo. I found it really odd for Yamada to be so secretive about the AQUA music video; it’s one thing to keep the general public from knowing, but to keep Hime out of the loop when she’s actually in the video seems totally unnecessary.

At any rate, she’s back in close quarters with AQUA, and those wanting more of Shuma will get it in Chapter 60. Granted, most of the chapter deals with his objection to Hime’s fraternization with Mizuki, but we do get to spend time in Shuma’s head. The one conversation between Shiro and Shuma about “[covering] someone’s mistake” is a dead giveaway for what happens during the concert, but it does the trick of allowing our heroine to finally win over Shuma.

Then the focus shifts to Hime’s love life. Having made huge strides in her career, Hime now faces matters of the heart. For a girl nicknamed “Gorilla Princess” who spends her time impersonating a boy, she suddenly gets a lot of attention from the opposite sex in Chapter 61. Instead of the struggling newbie in the recording booth, Hime’s now the confused high school girl sorting out her feelings. Oh, and by the way, her hair gets longer, as if to highlight her femininity. Anyone who’s wanted to see a more girly Hime should be fairly satisfied with this installment

Extras include embedded author’s remarks and two bonus mini-manga.

Kudo decided to attend the small party with everyone because he is trying to not put up as many walls as before and slowly seems to be changing. Shiro also wants to be able to show his (her) face to people when people start mentioning that they don't know what Shiro looks like. Shiro finally makes an appearance on screen but his name is withheld to draw more interest to the mysterious boy who was in Aqua's latest music video. Shuma is also becoming annoyed at how much Mizuki is paying attention to Shiro and tries to keep them away from each other. At the Aqua concert Shiro's name (and face) is revealed to the audience and Shiro even helps Shuma out of a pinch. Then finally Mizuki reveals his feeling for Hime and unfortunately for Mizuki she finally realizes her feeling for Senri Kudo around the same time.

This was a wonderful volume that had beautiful illustrations and the story is really starting to evolve as Hime/Shiro become better at voice acting. The characters have developed so much to get to this point and the relationships are starting to become even deeper that makes this volume one of the best in the series so far. True a great volume and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

Seiyuu-ka! a.k.a Voice Over!

The rating and review are conclusion for all of the volumes. Except for the synopsis.

Okay. This is a good story to pass my time before I start to concentrate on my final exam. It is not a slow pace story. I had fun reading this because there are some funny moments.

However, I don't give this manga a high rating because I don't admire the drawing. I could say the story is not so bad but what interests me the most about manga comic is the drawing. The characters for this story is good I guess. I mean, for example, the hero of this manga feels like a robot. I don't really like that.

I mean it's all good but I just don't feel it that much you know? There are a few sad scenes but it's not enough to trigger my emotions. So I kind of feel that this manga is not 'compatible' with me. You might want to try it out as it is not so bad. But for me, I like other manga compared to this.

I've just realized that I've read this manga before but I just can't quite remember the flow of the story. That's how I know I just don't enjoy it so much.

Synopsis for volume 11:
Shiro is finally able to show the world who is he. The time has come.

~4.5/5

God, this series just kills me. Right in the heart. Every time.

Senri and Hime are changing. Senri is learning how to make friends, how to be around people, even if he’s still not too sure who he is. Hime is getting better at her acting, her voice, in person. She’s getting better, taking all the critique, and finally getting popular. Which is when her manager decides to throw a curveball at her.

But she’s also realizing what her real feelings regarding Senri are. And oh it just crushes me. It’s also amazing seeing her and Senri get closer while she’s actually Hime. It’s just so sweet! It just warms me up inside.

I have no idea how on earth this series is going to get wrapped up in one more volume. That’s way too fast and I’m not ready for it to be over. But I’m also super excited. The cliffhanger at the end of this volume is sure to bring in some terrible things, but I’m so, so looking forward to it. I can’t wait.

My only qualm us not knowing why Kudo is acting so differently, but he was not the focus of this volume, so I expect that the question will be answered later on.
