When Archie Coe, the very rich and detested collector of Chinese porcelain, appears dead in his room locked from the inside, the first hypothesis is suicide.
But a quick inspection by Dr. Doremus shows that Archie's corpse has been beaten with a blunt object and stabbed before being shot in the temple.
Suspicion focuses on his brother Brisbane, until he is found dead in a closet on the ground floor.
The clues come down to a valuable broken vase and an injured Doberman. Suspicions extend to the entire family and the staff, including the Chinese cook.
Philo Vance does not agree with the direction of the investigation. He must draw on all of his knowledge of dog breeding and Chinese antiques to solve the locked room puzzle.

"And the facts here seem pretty clean-cut. That door was bolted on the inside; there's no other means of entrance or exit to this room; Coe is sitting here with the lethal weapon -."
"Oh, call it a revolver," interrupted Vance. "Silly phrase, 'lethal weapon.'"
Markham snorted.
"Very well... With a revolver in his hand, and a hole in his right temple. There are no signs of a struggle; the windows and shades are down, and the lights burning... How, in Heaven's name, could it have been anything but suicide?"
