A sweet and romantic story.

The novel starts with Gwen and Edward sending letters to one another, until he summons her to his house in order to do some paperwork. This socks Gwen, as their first encounter isn't what she expected.

This was a very pleasurable read, I really enjoyed being inside Gwen's mind and the author's voice. It was just the right pace for such a short story, taking it slow at times to savor the characters. We get to read some Edward POV and I didn't think it was necessary, but was a nice addiction anyways. It's clear why Gwen fall in love with his letters, but not how she falls for the hero. I particularly don't think the title nor the book cover makes this book justice: it's sweet, romantic and with a small touch of sensuality. I would've enjoyed to see a sex scene between them.

I'm intrigued to read more by Cassandra Dean and the Silk series.

This story surprised me -- for one, I didn't know it had been released until I read about it at Buried Under Romance, then, it surprised me by how charming and concise it is.

The first 11% of the novella is epistolary -- and the letters between Gwendolyn and Edward start off by accident, and, despite Gwendolyn's protestations, the letters between the legal scribe and the duke grow with an intimate progression that, I think, surprises both of them. (Yes, I used the word "surprise" three times already.) It's breathtaking and beautiful to imagine being able to fall in love sight unseen -- and what is revealed on paper isn't the outward beauty of Gwendolyn, but her soul -- and Edward's.

Edward is a very curious hero -- he's a duke, but he isn't worldly or experienced -- because of the injuries he sustained when he was 12, he has lived a reclusive life in Sowrithil, communicating mainly to his solicitors in London. I kinda like that Cassandra Dean didn't delve too much into Edward's past or the circumstances of his accident -- all we know is that it was the same accident that claimed both his parents. Instead, the author allows us to focus on Edward as he is now -- without the tragic backstory to color our judgment of him or to define him. And Edward, scars and all, is a really, really great guy. He may not have Lord Byron's good looks, but he has his moors where he broods and contemplates the crags and rocks -- and his letters are poetic. Beyond his Gothic appeal (he loves to read Gothic novels), he also seems to be a fair-minded man who is exercising diligence and thoughtfulness in how he is managing his estates. If his letters to his solicitors are any indication, he is a man who is taking the role and responsibility of the Duke of Sowrith very seriously.

I think what is highlighted in this novella is that the falling in love part is easy -- it's how you get along with each other that is the greater challenge. By their first meeting, Edward was already in love with Gwendolyn, and, even though Gwendolyn never says it, how she reveals her feelings to Edward in the letters, shows a great degree of trust already. It's interesting that Gwendolyn and Edward communicate so well on paper, but not in person -- and it leads to some small misunderstandings and hurt feelings -- but the spark is there, and we feel the same excitement as Gwendolyn does when she meets Edward for the first time.

...He had handled everything badly from the moment she'd arrived at Sowrithil. He'd wanted to impress her, to have her smile and greet him warmly, and for them to find the easy conversation they'd found in their letters.

Against his misgivings -- Bloody hell. Throat working, he closed his eye. Speak it true, man. Against his downright terror, he'd concocted a plan to bring her to Sowrithil. In his head, it had been a brilliant idea. In his head, he'd been verbose and suave, able to speak to her with something approaching normalcy. But that had been in his head.

In the first two instalments of the series, "Silk" referred to the hero, but, in Silk and Scars, it's actually Gwendolyn who is involved in the law. Cassandra Dean also uses her story to show that the study of law was off-limits to women in the 19th century, and Gwendolyn's position in the law office was uncertain.

She was beyond fortunate to obtain this employment, which was both well-paying and in the industry she loved. She had not thought to be able to work in law; had thought the limitations of her gender would again keep her from something she loved. However, somehow she'd stumbled into this work and she would not lose it over this.

Silk and Scars is such a great example of an epistolary done well -- I loved reading the letters between our hero and heroine. I loved our hero and heroine. I loved reading this story.

Oh My Gosh! Why didn’t anyone tell me about this series! This novella has two of my absolute favorite tropes, Epistolary romance and a Beta hero, all wrapped up in a delightful love story. I was charmed by the unfolding friendship between Gwen Parkes and Edward, Lord Sowrith through their letters back and forth. It was very easy to see how the correspondence gave them both an outlet to be themselves rather than behaving as their social classes would dictate.

Gwen was truly a strong character for pushing past Edward’s fears to find the passionate man she had fallen for. Her drive to draw Edward out of his shell allowed them the find the intimacy they had shared through their letters and bring it into the real world. The author does touch on the ideas of class barriers and women’s rights within the Victorian age, but they are never heavy-handed so as to remove the reader from the fantasy of these two lonely souls finding one another.

The novella’s length did work against it as far as fully developing both characters. I would have loved more backstory about Edward’s accident, Gwen’s struggles to find work in the field she loved and more development of their romance once they had met face to face. I also felt there was a need for secondary characters that interacted with the main characters more than just Gwen’s prejudiced boss. They could have added dimension to the story rather than just the single string that we followed to the end.

All that considered, I would highly recommend this novella to anyone looking for a sweet romance to pass a few hours with.

A well written charming romance, I loved both Edward & Gwen who feel in love with each other through their letters, when they eventually met they found their feelings hadn’t changed but sometimes it's hard to put feelings into the spoken word. The story was well paced & I loved the chemistry between the pair. however because it was a novella I had some unanswered questions especially what exactly had happened to Edward when he was twelve? I read this engrossing novella in a sitting

A beautiful story.

Because of a misunderstanding, the Duke of Sowrith gets a letter from Gwen, one that was supposed to be for her friend Etta. He reads it and actually finds it very amusing, so he writes back to her to tell her what happened. Gwen is embarrassed and apologizes for the mix-up, especially because her employer would kill her if he found out what happened, since the duke is one of his clients.

Edward, the duke, writes to Gwen again, so that she can tell him about the story with Etta that was included in the first letter... Because he's just all about the gossip.

For over a year, these two keep writing to each other and, without realizing it, start having feelings for one another. So one day, Edward orders Gwen's employer to come to his house and take her with him, where she's now supposed to work.

This is so beautiful, you guys. Beautiful!

Edward and Gwen have an amazing relationship, ever since that first letter. The way he acts in front of her once they meet in person is adorable, and I love how she's usually the one to take the first step. He's very insecure and withdrawn because of his scars, but Gwen just keeps showing him again and again how beautiful he is to her and how he doesn't need to hide from her (she actually doesn't feel good enough for him, since he's a duke and she only a commoner).

You know that feeling you get when you see (or in this case, read) something so pretty that your heart kinda hurts a little bit, but in a good way? THAT'S WHAT I WAS FEELING. I felt for Edward so much, I just wanted to give him a big hug and tell him that everything was going to be just fine.

Another amazing thing about this is that Edward respects Gwen very much and sees her as his equal. Gwen does have a job, mind you, but she gets mistreated because of her gender. Edward can't stand this and sees how incredibly smart and passionate she is about what she likes.

I was actually grinning like an idiot the whole time I was reading this. It's just so precious.

Will what brought them closer tear them apart …

This is my first read by the author, and as I discovered this book was a short story instead of a novel, I wondered if it was the right work to discover her work.
I remember not having been entranced by my first read by Tessa Dare, a novella, and nearly missed her fun tales because of it.
But I more than liked this one, plus I love epistolary tales, there is something in letters not fond in classically written stories (why I love Emma V Leech, Elisa Braden and GL Robinson stories for these snippets of letters, and evidently much more but it adds to the pleasure).
Gwen is the overlooked to-be-contented-with-what-she-had employee, she has no choice but to abide to her employer’s terms. So when she is ordered to uproot her life to please his client, the man she has been corresponding for a year, she struggles to reconcile with the poet in the letters and the harsh cold one standing before her. Yet she can’t stop herself to see past his scarred appearance as she has come to know the man from the inside.
Edward has lived a painful solitary life, until a misdirected letter lands on his lap and opens his world to someone else view of it. For him, it is a window from an other’s view.
But can they balance the persons from the words to the ones in real life, as status, wealth and gender oppose them in everything.

A lovely moving tale of two persons who have fought their own hardships, each having to battle to stand where they are now, but can they join their struggles together …

Rated 4.5/5, rounded up to 5 stars.

The heroine of this novella, Gwen, works as a scribe within a legal office, of which the hero, Edward, the Duke of Sowrith, is a client. The two begin an accidental correspondence when a personal letter of Gwen's to a friend gets mixed up with legal documents sent to the Duke's estate. Edward is charmed by her spirited nature and implores her to keep writing him. The main plot begins when the Duke impulsively asks her employer to send Gwen to his estate to act as his personal scribe, and the two find themselves face-to-face for the first time.

This was a solid novella with plenty of depth to the characters and their chemistry despite its length. I love a good epistolary romance, so I was especially entertained by the start of the novel, during which Gwen and Edward begin to correspond with each other and develop their friendship. The first half of the novella is uniquely in Gwen's POV, so we are left in the dark as much as she as to why the Duke is so standoff-ish and seemingly cold in her presence, which worked well as a narrative device.

I enjoyed both the hero and heroine in this story - Gwen was intelligent, passionate about her profession, and more than able to hold her own when it came to interacting with the Duke. A lot of this moxey shone through at the climax of the story when she forces Edward to properly propose to her and there's no doubt that she will be every part his equal once they're wed. A strong heroine overall.

I also loved Edward. I've read a lot of historical romances with scarred hero where they tend to have the same gruff, alpha-male personality that they often blend in with each other. I found Edward to be a breath of fresh air due to his shy and vulnerable nature, and the endearing way he became tongue-tied whenever he was around Gwen upon her arrival at Sowrith. I've only read two works by Cassandra Dean (the other being Stealing Lord Stephen) and I find she has a talent for writing protagonists that feel unique for the genre but also wholly realistic. I look forward to reading more from her.

I do wish this story had more spice, as we are only treated to a passionate make-out session where the couple are half-naked. But we do get plenty of emotionally intimate moments as the two fall in love and Gwen shows Edward he is more than his scars and physical limitations.

Thank you to Booksprout and the author for providing me with a copy of this novella in exchange for my honest opinion.

This series from Cassandra is a reprint of some of her older books. I have mixed feelings on all of the book in this series. Each starts with the H and h writing letters back and forth. It was hard to keep reading not knowing much about the couples.
First, I would just like to say the cover does not do anything for this wonderful story. I would have liked to have had both the beauty and beast on the cover.
This story is a little like beauty and beast with beauty being Miss Gwendolyn Parkes, a commoner who is working at Beecham & Co. a law firm in London scribing transcripts. This is usual a man's job and as such she is keep away from the Clients and a secret. After writing a letter to her best friend Etta, it gets sent to one of the Companies best clients, the Duke of Sowrith ! Gwen could lose her job over this. The money she makes helps her parents back home. Instead of being mad or upset, the Duke starts writing Gwen back and so it goes for two years. Then when Gwen has a problem at work and tells the duke about it everything changes. Her boss, Lord Peter Beecham takes her to Sowrith the home of the Duke to live there doing whatever the Duke needs.
Nothing goes as she hoped at their first meeting, the Duke has told her he is scared and that is why he never goes to London. Nothing could ready her for what the Duke looks like scars and all. He is so handsome.
As the Duke and Gwen work together, learn about each other's faults and dreams everything chances between them. But in real life she is still a commoner and he is still a Duke.
What can come of this friend to more ? There is so many emotions, affection, longing and hope in this short story you don't want to pass it by. So far this is my favorite of the three books.
I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

A Stray Letter Brought Them Together

by Nanc

First time reading this author and I enjoyed the style of this book . The listing in Booksprout says this is a sweet book but there is a little bit of spice to it. It started out as a series of letters were exchanged between a duke and a woman working in a law office as a scribe.

Miss Gwendolyn Parkes was a very interesting character working in a field that was out of the norm for a woman. She had a love of the law and a letter she wrote to a friend was sent by mistake to the Duke of Sowrith a client of the law firm. When he sent her a letter back and requested she respond, they began a friendship. After months of corresponding she was surprised when her employer brought her with him to see the Duke at his Dartmoor estate. Finding the friend she had come to know cold and withdrawn was not what she expected.

Edward, Duke of Sowrith, became a duke at the age of 12 after an unfortunate accident that left him severely scarred. He has isolated himself after attempting a London Season due to the whispers about his scars. He enjoyed the letters from Gwen but wanted more than just a long distance relationship. Having her come to his estate and finally meeting her was wonderful but left him tongue tied and feeling inadequate.

Would Edward and Gwen be able to continue the sweet friendship they had begun on paper when they interacted in person? Would the difference in their classes keep them apart?

I loved the style of this book as it starts with letters passed between Gwen and the Duke of Sowrith.
A personal letter wrongly posted starts this correspondence which instantly seems to highlight loneliness.
A sweet and banter filled relationship through ink develops that is a beautiful to read.
A connection is formed with each opening up to this safe interaction.
Their letters seem to mean more as they are apart in distance until that suddenly changes.
Meeting the Duke in person after travelling as a scribe with her employer filled me with anxiety for Gwen just reading this.
The emotions provoked are so real and dramatic that I feel as if I am a part of this world.
Upon meeting the man and being told she will stay with him, she discovers he is fairly cold and is hurt by the reality.
Gwen searches for the Edward she came to know in him and is disappointed but it is fear that holds him back.
He thinks his scars are repulsive to her and her beauty.
I was so emotional while reading this regency delight and my heart was stuck between pain and joy.
A beautiful treasure of a story that deserves the same attention as any bestseller.
Perfectly written with fear, doubt, feeling, drama, concealment and love.

I read this story in one sitting. Gwen and Edward begin their relationship as pen pals. This works very well for Edward as he has been a recluse ever since he was scarred in an accident which also took the life of his father. The back-and-forth letter writing allowed the author to showcase her ability to write the witty banter which is so important in romances of this type. The story was not very steamy but given the nature of the relationship and the novella length, this was an appropriate choice for the author.
Gwen, an underling in a London law office, was summoned by the duke to work for him at his country estate. Their relationship began awkwardly, not because of his appearance, but because of their class differences. Gwen, although well-educated, was forced to hide in a corner at the office because she was female. She would send money home to help support her parents. The duke was completely out of her league. She couldn't believe that he wanted a relationship with her. Happily everything worked out. At the end, Gwen reminded me of the Julia Roberts character in "Pretty Woman."

3.75 STARS

I guess this was previously published in 2015, which I wasn't aware of. I was furnished an advanced copy by Bookfunnel - all opinions are my own and voluntarily given.

I enjoyed the beginning where the h accidently sends the Duke a letter meant for her friend. The Duke enjoys her wit and phrasing and they start writing letters back and forth. The Duke (H), arranges for her to visit his home in the guise he needs her to do some work for him. But, he is cold and distant and she feels like she has lost the friend she knew through the letters.

We know the Duke was badly scared when he was 12. But, I wanted to know more about how he lost his father and what actually caused such destruction to his face and body. There is a small hiccup in their journey to HEA and then all is resolved quickly. I was very disappointed the wedding was off page because I wanted to meet the h's best friend. Because of this, the story ended abruptly for me.

There is kissing and some fondling above waist one time, outside of marriage. The wedding night is off page. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and some romance. (ljb)

A Love Story to Sigh About

It is ironic that before reading this book that reminds me of Beauty and the Beast, I read a highly erotic and graphic version of Rapunzel. While I do enjoy reading “sexy time books” (as my husband would put it). I felt the need to read something light and sweet and innocent (compared to the last book).

Silk and Scars is the first book I have read written by Cassandra Dean. I really fell in love with the book and its characters. Gwen and Edward started out as pen pals. Then one day Edward found a way for Gwen to work for him. And from there their budding relationship really blossomed. There were a lot of touching moments. And, although there was no lovemaking scene, there were kissing scenes where it was loaded with emotion and connection so it was really sweet.

I think whenever I need a story to just fall in love with then Cassandra Dean will be one of my go to authors.

A Beautiful Story . . .

Due to a mistake, Miss Gwendolyn Parkes and the Duke of Sowrith began corresponding with each other. Even after discovering the mistake, they continued to write as their friendship strengthened.

Edward, Duke of Sowrith, has wanted to meet Gwen, to the point of even arranging her passage to come to his estate. But when he sees her, he feels inadequate due to his own facial scars and he cannot even speak to her. She is lovely and he lets his fears force him into silence which brings her pain. Gwen is devastated that her friend is being cold and imperious, so unlike their warm correspondence. She sees him as extremely handsome despite his scars that don’t matter to her.

Only when Gwen’s safety is threatened will Edward find the strength to act and keep her safe. Their love pulls them together. But is it possible for a mere commoner and a Duke to find a HEA?

Through a mixup of mailing a letter to the Duke of Sowrith (instead of to her sister), Gwen begins a 2-year correspondence with him. They both comfort each other—she’s a scribe (copies documents) in a solicitor’s office who is hidden away because she’s a woman; he has horrific physical and emotional scars that we don’t know how they happened.

They had many angsty moments after she visits him at his estate. He’s afraid to trust and she’s afraid because their life stations are so different. The craggy, bleak landscape of Edward’s land reminded me of his scars and bleak outlook he had on life.

I loved how Edward could overcome some of his traumatic past to help Gwen with her issues. Love has no boundaries.

I read Book 1 of this series, Finding Lord Fairlisle, and enjoyed it. But after reading Teach Me I was hoping for steamier stories. I think the plots and characters are great and will definitely read Book 2.

I received a free copy for my honest opinion.

Gwen and Edward's relationship began with a mistaken correspondence that blossomed into a friendship with each of them wanting more. But when they finally meet face-to-face, Edward is rigid and cold. He is self-conscious about his injuries and scars from a childhood accident. Gwen and Edward begin to rekindle their relationship, but Gwen is a commoner and Edward is a Duke. This is Victorian Beauty and the Beast, and I mean this in the best possible sense.

Silk & Scars is a sweet novella with high emotions and wonderful characters. Gwen is a woman working in a law office in the 1840s. She is vibrant and smart, and she sees the best of Edward. Edward is a tortured hero who feels deeply internally but struggles to show his emotions. They are perfectly crafted for each other, and their journey is lovely. Highly recommended!

Gwen and Edward

Gwen is a secretary at a law firm when a letter intended for her friend Etta is sent to a client. He replies and a friendship develops. Edward has been badly injured and has numerous scars. Edward summons Gwen and her employer to his property. Can friendship from correspondence become friendship when they finally meet?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this engaging, entertaining and compelling story. I loved how Gwen and Edwards relationship develops and strengthens as they get to know each other, Gwen seeing beyond the scars to actually 'see' Edward; and Edwards devotion to Gwen. The story is well written, fast paced with lots of chemistry between the characters. The story is told from dual POVs reveals intimately their thoughts, feelings and emotions as they explore their relationship. There's an epilogue and a HEA 💓

What an absolutely, delightful, love story! This book had me from the beginning with witty and wonderful letters written back and forth between, Edward, Duke of Sowrith, and Gwen Parkes, a transcriber for his solicitor. When she accidentally sends him a personal letter that she’d written to her friend, their relationship begins. The Duke is a recluse, having been badly scarred in an accident that made him the Duke at the age of twelve. Her letters brought joy to his life and he needed to meet her in person so he devises a plan to bring her to his estate on business. But when they meet, he is self conscious and unable to speak. In a beautiful way, she draws him out and their relationship flourishes, but what can become of it when she is only a commoner, and he is a Duke?

As with the rest of this series, it starts with letters between the hero and heroine. In this instance, the letters are poignant and freeing for both, as they express themselves without inhibition or thought to propriety. Being able to be themselves should give them a head start to a rich relationship. Right? Maybe not! After meeting, not only propriety, but all their insecurities come to the fore.
This is an enchanting tale of finding not just each other, but themselves. The inequalities of men and women are also part of this story. In this one, the overbearing and downright nasty men in Gwen's life almost get their comeuppance, but not quite.
I wish I had read the series in order, but each is a standalone, merely adding to the rest.

This is the first book I've read by Ms Dean and I found it completely delightful. Full of wit, banter, lots of feelings and with a storyline that will tuck at your heartstrings! Gwen is a woman in an unusual position for her times, Edward is a Duke with scars that have kept him separate not just from high society, but from people in general. Through their correspondence, they begin to form a relationship which turns into love when they meet. But their HEA requires that both step out of their comfort zones. I wouldn't have minded it being a bit longer and with more details about their respective pasts but a great read nonetheless! I look forward to reading more from this author.

Accidental correspondence cause a scared Duke to fall for a headstrong commoner.

This is the 3rd novel in Cassandra Dean’s “Silk” series. It is a novella that well exhibits Ms. Dean’s wordsmithing talent and storytelling ability. While it was previously published, it is an nice introduction to Ms. Dean’s literature. Because of its length, the characters are not completely developed but the story does not suffer from this, Don’t miss this quick read.
“Silk and Scars” is a wonderful tale of a peer falling in love with a commoner, first through written correspondence and then through face to face interaction. I recommend this book and I am sure you will enjoy reading it.

Delightful! Gwen was a scribe at a law office that serviced Edward, the Duke of Sowrith. One day she accidentally sent him a letter intended for her best friend. They began corresponding and a friendship developed. Gwen and her boss were summoned to the duke’s estate, enabling her to finally meet her Edward. This is a story full of vulnerability and frustration. Gwen is trapped by the way society views women and class, while Edward struggles with his insecurities due to his disfigurement. I love the way their correspondence begins and ends this tale. It is clever and charming, and a wonderful way to bring intimacy to the story. This story is emotionally satisfying and uplifting.

I adored this novella! I'm such a sucker for relationships that start with written correspondence in historical romances, and it was done SO well here! This also has huge Gothic/beauty and the beast vibes which was delightfully fun. I can't wait to continue on with this series and also read more of this author.

~Tropes~
- Written Correspondence
- Scarred Hero
- Smart Heroine
- Gothic Vibes (moors, castle, beauty and the beast feels)
- stuck in a big castle with only a duke
- he falls first and HARD

This is a steamy historical romance, but it's pretty low spice overall (1 scene that's not too explicit).

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I so enjoy Cassandra Dean’s novellas. She is an amazing writer and, despite this novella’s brevity, she captures everything necessary to construct a beguiling story. In Silk and Scars the conciseness is facilitated by a series of letters, which initially form the romantic attachment and introduces the reader to the two main characters - the reclusive Edward and the sunny natured Gwen, who are both captivating personalities and their story is sublime.

When written well, which this is, novellas are my favourite format because a reader is able to become engrossed in a splendid story, enjoy the characterisation and finish the book uninterrupted; hopefully, in one sitting. I’m looking forward to reading Book 4 in this series, Silk and Scholar.

I really enjoyed this story of Gwendolyn and Edward, Duke of Sowrith. They have been corresponding for over a year and when they finally meet not everything goes as expected as Gwendolyn finds Edward aloof and standoffish. However this is due to Edward being badly scarred and it makes him tongue tied in front of Gwendolyn. Can Gwendolyn break him down and find lasting happiness? There are twists and turns along the way especially when Gwendolyn finds herself in danger. This is not a long story and I read it in a single sitting. I received an ARC and am leaving a totally voluntary, unbiased and honest review.

Gwen and Edward have a sweet, wonderful story that started with a letter that wasn’t even meant for him. After a year of correspondence, they felt like old friends. Edward, who was scarred in an accident in his youth, wanted to meet Gwen in person. She traveled to his estate with her employer. In the time they spent together their friendship became much more. Is it possible that a duke and a common girl can find happily ever after? Edward and Gwen were great characters. Their story, and especially their letters, were entertaining and amusing. I recommend this one.

Edward is a deep thinking, physically and emotionally scarred, lonely man. Gwen is more than the world sees, seeing beyond Edward’s scars. ‘Silk & Scars’ is truly a beautiful story.

The banter between Gwen and Edward —especially in their correspondence—is hilarious.

Cassandra Dean is one of my favorite writers. All her books I've read are very interesting with strong characters and unexpected stories. The beginning of the book as an epistolaire is an unusual option but I like it a lot. The development of the subject, the twist and turns between the psychological approach - the explanation of Edward's attitude - his outside and inside scars - and adventurous approach - when Gwendolyn finds herself in danger is very skilful.

I warmly recommend this book and I very much look forward to the coming books of this author.

Miss Gwendolyn Parkes and Edward, the Duke of Sowrith, have struck up a correspondence through his solicitor for the past year. When Edward requests her presence in person at his estate, she is disappointed to find that the man doesn't measure up to his letters. Edward, scarred and overwhelmed by his attraction to Gwen, struggles to open up with her.

This story was a quick read, low steam, and a little bit of mystery thrown in. This is my second book by Cassandra Dean and while I enjoyed it, it didn't live up to my expectations.

The plot was a soft take on beauty and the beast. The heroine is relegated to the backroom at her employers because she is a woman and thus must not be seen. She inadvertently sends a letter, meant for her friend, to one of her employers customers. This sets off a lovely chain of letters, with a scared Duke who has little contact with the outside world. It was a lovely, sweet story. The romance is fast paced- (no misunderstandings etc) and the friendship, which turns into romance , feels authentic.
