Dear Author, It’s been seven months since I have been deployed. It’s been nine months since we found our surrogate. So much has happened in so little time. It should be happening anytime now; our baby coming into the world. I hated leaving him to handle this alone. I should be home in three months. The baby will be here and I can finally meet him/her. Please tell our story?
Photo Description: A man, his broad, bare, and tattooed back facing the photographer, holds a small, sleeping newborn baby. Tiny hands and fingers stretch out across the man’s shoulders, almost clutching a set of dog tags that rest over the scripted, Old-English style inked word of “Family”.
This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love is an Open Road" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

This was a sweet established couple story about a solider returning home in Massachusetts to his newborn twin boys and hubs. A lot of cooing and awing about the babies and their smells. Oh and the towels and their smells. And the house and the decor and the subtle changes. And the baby proofing. And the uniform cloth texture.
Oh and there was a shower hand job too.
Yeah.
It was sweet. Very sweet.
I think the length was perfect because my attention span for sweet established couples is quite small.
So I'll just stick a sweet pic right here:
And thank the author and the team. This is rated I like it. Not bad for my first LOR story. :)
A truly adorable story about a sexy man in uniform returning home from a tour of duty to a loving husband and his two newborn sons. Yup. That right there? That was the sound of my ovaries exploding. Uh... in a good way.
While the whole thing was cute, I thought the author did a particularly good job with the opening scene. The disorientation and anticipation and sheer joy that I see on the faces of every serviceman and woman that I see returning from combat on the videos I watch on YouTube (because I am a SUCKER for a surprise homecoming video) was perfectly captured here by Jackson.
Reading this story is like playing with a basket full of kittens - an instant mood booster. Do yourself a favour: read Becoming Dad and give yourself 10 minutes of happy today.
Thanks to the author for participating in this year's DRitC event, Love is an Open Road!
Well, this is sweet, humorous, and relays the realistic anxiety and excitement about, not just arriving back home but, meeting your babies for the first time.
Some of the phrasing was awkward, like six words were squeezed into a space meant for four. It didn't lessen the joy and exhaustion and wonderment both Kyle and Alex were feeling.
If you need a smile...this is bursting with happy feelz. New daddy coming come from deployment is welcomed by his husband and newborn twin boys. Short. Sweet. Smiles all around.
Thanks to the author for participating and offering this freebie.
It's a sweet story of a homecoming soldier meeting his babies for the first time. Many will like it. The writing style didn't work for me - I got more of an impression of the weather than the reunion - but that's one-of-those things, we all read differently.
Free from the M/M Romance group's Love Is An Open Road event.
I can only imagine that this sort of thing happens quite a bit - a soldier coming home from deployment to meet his newborn babies for the very first time.
I liked how the author captured the wonder of that, plus settling back into life state-side after being gone for so long, the reunion with his husband, the musings at the changes - this all sounded very realistic to me.
Thank you so much to the author who have participated in this event
This 5k short story is basically a slice-of-life; the day when Kyle, a soldier who has been away for a tour of duty, is going home to be reunited with his husband and his new babies (twins!!). I love stories about established couple and I could definitely get the vibe on how Kyle and Alex loved each other very well. The idea of Kyle adjusting his life with the new babies is also adorable; fumbling with mistakes and all. It was sweet.
Unfortunately, I also felt like I missed stuffs because of its length. I missed the connection with Kyle and Alex (since they were an established couple). There was not much of a plot or conflicts (yes, I know, it's a slice of life, but that will work better for me if I am familiar with the characters like in fan-fictions). I admit that my eyes glazed over around half-way, and this was only a 5000 words story (never a good sign).
Note: Per my own policy, any story from this year's event that I can't give 3* rating to, will be left unrated
A short, sweet story (with some spice) about a soldier, Kyle, adjusting to new changes after coming home from a years deployment overseas. Reuniting with his husband and meeting his babies for the first time, this is a snippet of a couple I'd love to read more about.
Love the prompt picture (hot!) and wonderful prompt. My thanks to the author for their time and participation in the Love is an Open Road event.
What a great story. It's got two men who are very much in love, one of them a soldier coming home to a somewhat enlarged family, and some very hot reunion activities.
Kyle has missed a lot while he was stationed in Afghanistan, and he is both excited to see his husband Alex again, and a little intimidated that they now have twins. He knew about it, of course, but the practice is different from the theory. As expected, dealing with two babies isn't as easy as it sounds - the description of him attempting to deal with the car seats is hilarious.
Alex was the one who stayed behind, and he deals with the babies as if he'd never done anything else. Having Kyle there to support him now has many advantages, and while Alex is not afraid of anything, shared joy is twice the joy. There is a difference between "coping" with life and enjoying it.
If you like stories about men with children, and if you are looking for a sweet read with lots of opportunities to laugh, then you will probably like this free short story.
I don't want him to go back but the homecoming was beautiful.
A very nice story.
Thanks to all the Group members who provided awesome prompts with lovely pictures, the authors for writing free stories based on those prompts for all of us to read for free and the M/M Romance Group for all their hard work in putting this years Don’t Read in the Closet event, Love is an Open Road, together.
Short contemporary story Kyle is returning home from a tour duty in Afghanistan and meeting his twin sons for the first time, and being reunited with his long term partner Alex. This is a glimpse of the first few hours home but a very sweet reunion story.
short and sweet. Kyle has come home after months away after being deployed. He missed most the birth of his twins and alex was left with to handle things. kyle is home and he will adjust to the new surroundings and get to know his babies. And kyle and alex will reconnect and now nothing matter they will be an family at last wonder what happens next though. wouldnt mind to read more about them and they twins.
Loved this little snippet. For me, everything felt on point since I'm a military spouse. At least my husband was there when all the kids were born; even when he had to deploy less than 3 hrs after our youngest one was born.
The author did great showing the feelings of the returning airman. And, how difficult readjustment could be.
I would love to read Kyle & Alex's story. How they became husbands, and if DADT was part of it or not.
I enjoyed this sweet story about a soldier returning from deployment to his husband and brand new twin sons. Seeing how awkward and out of place Kyle seemed with everything concerning the babies was endearing, and the overall feeling of the piece was quite heartwarming.
Awwwwww. First meeting between a military dad and his twin sons. Super sweet and a lovely little established couple story. Really just a slice of life moment out of their history but one well crafted and endearingly presented.
