In 2026, it finally arrives, the drug promising to make life easier for the masses. One dose of M and anyone can gain an ability. There are no promises made as to what the power could manifest as, but people are crawling over one another to take a chance.
There's a problem: One pill costs a million dollars. Only those with extraordinary wealth are afforded the luxury of cleaning house with a click of their diamond-adorned fingers or solving a puzzle by talking to it.
A knockoff begins circulating in 2038 that does the same thing as M. Hundreds of thousands of people have mutated for a mere one hundred dollars.
Enter the year 2042.
Seventeen-year-old Griffin is a normal kid, who has a regular job, and dreams of going to college someday. When his girlfriend of three years succumbs to peer pressure, they break up. He believes the body is a temple not to be messed with outside of nature, and she wants to fit in. Once he meets the supplier, things take a turn for the worse.
He's left with nothing but pain in his heart and the desire to make them suffer when his plans for payback blow up in his face.
Thirst for revenge consumes him, and he finds himself locked in a battle he never anticipated with a merciless kingpin as they struggle to gain the advantage.
Jo Michaels loves writing novels that make readers gasp in horror, surprise, and disbelief. While her browser search history has probably landed her on a list somewhere, she still dives into every plot with gusto, hoping "the man" will realize she's a writer and not a psychopath about to go on a rampage. Her favorite pastimes are reading, watching Investigation Discovery, and helping other authors realize their true potential through mentoring. She's penned the award-winning Pen Pals and Serial Killers series and the best-selling educational book for children, Writing Prompts for Kids, which has rocketed the kids that use it into several awards of their own.
Most of Jo's books feature the places she's lived: Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia. That's given her a special amount of insight to what makes those locations tick. Her works are immersive and twisty, and she wouldn't want it any other way.
Imagine a world where you can take a pill- called M- that will reshape your DNA and alter you so that you are given a special ability...would you take the pill if you had one million dollars to spend on it? Or would you take a cheaper knockoff version- called M2- for one hundred dollars that may not be safe, but others have been taking for four years with what seems to be no ramifications? If I am the one answering those questions, I would like to think I wouldn't take either pill. I would want to be an Emfree just like the main character in this story, Griffin Taylor. I would want to just stay myself and be who I am, but it is hard to know for sure what I would choose unless faced with that decision in real life.
I really enjoyed reading this one. The idea for it is original, creative, and is written in a way that makes it easy to read. I was able to finish it in just a couple of hours. The main character is a teenager who is passionate about what he believes in and is willing to fight for it. He is the kind of guy who looks bullies in the face and stands up to them and is also a big brother and son who is adored by his family. Of course I like Griffin Taylor, it would be very, very difficult not to like the kid- even though trouble seems to follow him like the plague.
The only thing that kept me from giving this 5 stars is the way the book ended.
However, even with all of that being said, I still had fun reading this. If you're looking for a quick, fast-paced read, then add this one to your list.
A pill. One pill, one ability, a superpower of sorts useful or pointless, good or bad (A Bertie Bots every flavoured bean of the designer drug world.) Want one? That will be $1 Million. M is the drug that everyone wants but only the super rich can afford. It isn’t long before M2 reaches the market, same super power but at a fraction of the price, what could possible go wrong?
For Griffin, a self proclaimed EmFree, his world comes tumbling down when his girlfriend gains an ability through taking M2 at a new years party. His relationship in tatters he starts to plot his revenge against those who took his girlfriend from him, a small victory becoming a horror story and a spiral of events snowballing into catastrophe.
This is a real heart thumper of a ride, from Griffin’s first successful yet misguided attack through to the terrifying end, this is a book you will not want to put down. Thinking back now there are so many issues woven into this story, some will break your heart and many will have you thinking long after the last page. It’s set in the future, but it’s not so distant that it isn’t out of reach, many of the ideas are within grasp and that’s what makes it all the more exciting and terrifying. The science bit is super sciency and the twists you won’t see coming, so i’ll be quiet about those!
The characters are amazing, Articus Bane is the most charismatic bad guy and Griffin can be kind of annoying as a protagonist, he’s certaining not your typical hero, if you can even call him that at times. There are certainly a number of failing moral compasses going on and the lines are often blurred between doing the right thing and doing what they think is right.
If you want a fast paced, thoughtful, heartbreaking and terrifying read, take a dose of M. 5 amazing stars!
Griffin knows who he wants to be... the new, and now inexpensive, drug M is not part of his plans. Many disagree and are excited to embrace an altered life, including Griffin's girlfriend. For him, it's a deal breaker. But it's more than that. He plans to rebel against the makers and make a statement.
Unfortunately, that statement leads to heartache, setting him on the path to revenge. A path that rarely goes well.
Griffin is headstrong, a character trait that leads him into some hairy situations but also gets him out of them. As he plots his revenge, he runs into more people affected by M. These characters have their own pain to deal with. As they dig deeper, they realize the full impact of this knock-off drug. One character, a mother, left me in tears with her loss.
There's so much great story here, and I don't want to spoil anything. Just trust me... once you read the first page, you'll be hooked. It's a crazy ride, full of action and emotion. And it leaves you wondering how far you would go to right a wrong.
Oh, and if you love a villain who's bad to the bone, this story's for you. Although we get some insight into what made him evil, there's no question of how far he's willing to go. There's some harrowing scenes.
Finally, for fans who love at least a little romance, you won't be disappointed either. Just saying.
A must-read!

Imaginative, fast paced, YA, science fiction thriller! When Griffin's girlfriend decides to take M, the thing Griffin hates most, Griffin takes revenge. Highly recommended.
