Rate this book

I reviewed Vol I previously and found it helpful. Vol II is superior to Vol I, not least perhaps because it deals with more recent history a bit more accessible to the modern American.

This volume begins with the February Revolution in 1917 and details the prominent Jewish role in the Russian revolution and the assassination of the tsar. It further details their rise to power in the Bolshevik government and highly disproportionate representation in the communist government and their brutal behavior in the suppression of Christianity and the massacre of the priests, as well as the dekulakization in the Soviet Union.

Solzhenitsyn pulls no punches in this volume but is fair throughout, recognizing the precarious position Jews held for the previous periods in Russia. He also deals with their fall from grace in the Soviet Union following their period of ascendancy in the 20s and 30s.

The author is sympathetic to the Jewish plight throughout but holds no countenance for the "always a victim" grievance insisted upon by the majority of Jewish intellectuals. As a Russian himself, Solzhenitsyn calls the Jews to task for their own part in the tortured history of the Russians' and Jews' 200 years together.

Recommended.

He makes great efforts to understand why they are the way they are without making excuses for them, but it unquestionable that they are a curse to the lands they inhabit as well as the unfortunate people who are their neighbors. Like any plague they should be shunned.
