4.5 stars - I continue to wish Goodreads allowed half stars.
The Quest of Second Chances is so much fun! I had a great time reading this book. I love how much the story values and celebrates friendship. I highly recommend this to any fantasy reader.
The idea of quest companions left behind when the Chosen One returns to their own world (and there having been so many chosen ones that this is a common thing) is an original premise that helps create a fresh take on a traditional fantasy story.
The characterization and world building are both detailed and fascinating. I would happily read several books set in this world. Somehow this book managed to remind me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, A Wrinkle in Time, and a traditional Dungeons & Dragons campaign all at the same time.
I appreciate that the choices the characters make fit the situation and are consistent for what we know of their character. There was not one time where I thought, “well, that was a stupid thing for him/her to do, but I guess we need it to move the plot.” There were a few events that seemed too coincidental to be random chance, but then later we learned the reason for that.
This is listed as Christian fantasy, which is not a genre I am aware of having read before (other than The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when I was 10). There are a few scenes where the characters discuss religion, and the heroine from Earth witnesses to some of the characters in the fantasy world. I am not currently a religious person, and the witnessing scenes felt inserted to me and not necessary to the plot. (Although the idea of being forgiven for one’s sins was relevant to those characters.)
Having said that, I remember reading a portal fantasy at age 15, a time when I took the religion of my upbringing very seriously. After reading it I spent a lot of time wondering what I would do if I were pulled through my mirror to a medieval world, and one of my concerns was how I might adhere to certain tenets of my faith in that situation. A story like The Quest of Second Chances would have been reassuring/aspirational to me at that time, since it has characters who are able to have adventures while maintaining and sharing their faith.
