Shooter is a good collection of video game essays focusing on deep level criticism of the FPS genre. Looking for a female perspective of gameplaying? How about a culture dive of Pripyat and nuclear fallout? Maybe just a mechanical focus on how to turn genre expectations around? This books has an essay for you. In fact, it probably has several essays for you.

The mission of this book is really to just take the FPS genre from the hands of your local college frat boys. They want to spotlight the way that DOOM and Fallout 3 are connected, how FarCry 2 and Perfect Dark are similar, and how any game in one of the most maligned genres can be deep and spiritual and cultural in a way you'd never expect.

At the very least, I now have a handful of new writers to check out after reading this.

Bit New Game Journalism-y but each essay is well written enough to get away with it
