This book had a few things I love starting with two adorable cat sleuths. It’s so much fun when the cats help solve the crimes. No, these cats don’t talk but they didn’t have to. They got their point across and helped to save the day.
Beatrice Young is an older amateur sleuth, which is another aspect I liked. She owns a Cozy Cat Cafe - an excellent setting for a cat mystery :) There’s a hint of romance which will probably be explored in future books.
It’s not a complex murdery mystery and can be read in just a couple of hours. It’s a good start to a new series and I’m looking forward to reading more.

This is a good-humoured small town mystery. The sleuth is a lady in her golden years, divorced, on good terms with her husband, who is now widowed from his second marriage.
I am sure not even a Maine Coon could do all that this cat does, such as pickpocketing a young woman for her phone, hiding and cluching it between his back paws, until he could drop it for his owner. So let's call it a smart-cat fantasy. As to why a cat would sniff out a forged banknote, an explanation should have been provided, like the money smelling of fish oil or something. A cat doesn't just decide to point out a particular banknote.
Young people and their problems are also in the tale, although we're assured the town is now better for the young than it used to be. (Probably because of broadband and wi-fi, if we're realistic.)
The sleuth destroys evidence and wrecks the chain of evidence on several occasions. No police department, except a totally incompetent one, would work with her or prosecute on the strength of the items she brings in - they must be left in place for proper forensic recovery and investigation. Don't pick them up, shake them off and carry them in to town in your hot little hand. Nor should you breach privacy as described. Read a few police procedurals and see the difference.

May 27, 2016There were a lot of reasons I expected to enjoy this book, and obviously many people did. HOWEVER,I wanted to make a note to warn those who, like me, have their pleasure spoiled by poor mechanics of writing. There were so many in the first chapter that I gave up. Examples: "She spooned in ground beans into the portafilter". "Most...either worked at the park or in various tourism-related jobs." If those examples bother you,I suggest you skip this one, even if it does feature a cute Maine Coon cat.

Jessica Fletcher with cats. So "cosy" that her business is even called the Cosy Cat Cafe, but this novella was very short, very underdeveloped and very bland. The end just chopped off short. We have the obligatory references to previous cases she has helped out on.
Rogers writes cats as if they were dogs. I myself was owned by an albino Siamese for years, that I treated more like a dog than a cat, but I know from experience that you won't get any response from a cat by giving it "a hard look". It will ignore you and proceed to do what it wants to do. Also, I doubt many restaurants, supermarkets etc would allow cats in due to health and hygiene legislation. Added to that, Rogers needs to go back to eighth-grade composition class and review English mechanics, as well as style. We are treated to such wonderful writing as "He looked up with a knowing look." Where was the proofreader? Oh, that's right, there wasn't one.

It's not awful. There's only one or two "ah-ohs". It's just that there is nothing really appealing about anyone, including the cats and I'm a cat lady.
I had most of the mystery "unraveled" before the middle of the book and really just didn't care who killed the guy (you do get a who, but that's it, no how, etc., so that's a bit lame).
Nice try, but no cigar.

What a delightful book about a 60 something woman who owns a cafe has 2 cats who accompany her everywhere and a penchant for solving mysteries. She makes sure to listen to all the gossip so she knows what is happening in the small town she lives in.
Then she receives a counterfeit 20.00 bill from an old (male) friend and starts to wonder who is passing them out. Well, her maine coon knows there is something wrong with that boll and tries to take it from her! Then comes the fun as she, her 2 cats and the sheriff-with a bit of help from her friend (who is actually her ex) have an additional puzzle to solve--who murdered the young man?
I highly suggest you read this one--fast read with fully developed characters. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

I am sorry to say, I did not like this book very much.
The writing was very well done. Ms Rogers is a talented author, but she created a plot that was preposterous and the lead character, Beatrice acted dumber than a box of rocks.
Bee is not some young woman who does not understand life. She is a woman in her sixties. And yet, every time the sheriff asked her to stop doing something, or not do something, she went right ahead as though she were impervious to the law.
And finally, I enjoy cozy mysteries which include animals. But, this went too far. I am sorry. Maybe today was not my day for fantasy.

I'm basically a dog lover, but the curious cats in this story won me over!
A mystery that takes place in a small town in New Hampshire and the Cozy Cat Cafe. It seems that the owner of the cafe is destined to get involved in the mysteries that spring up. Her cats are not just her loyal friends, but indeed true investigators that help her discover the murderer.
I recommend it as a short lighthearted read.

The cats are cute but who takes their cats everywhere -and who tolerates cats being taken everywhere? The story is predictable and the mystery too quickly solved for my taste. The characters are endearing Bee and Matthew as old divorcees who still get on are really sweet. This book was a quick easy read but something was missing.

This was a charming, easy and quick to read mystery book. An excellent book for middle school ages and up. It is fast paced and sure to keep the reader's interest.
The story is set in the small tourist town of Ashbrook, New Hampshire. The town and local businesses as well as the main characters are well described. The author does such a great job, it made me want to take a [long] road trip and visit this town. I also enjoyed that one of the main characters was a Maine Coon cat. I have always admired the breed. The Main Coon cat's appearance is regal and majestic while at the same time you can imagine their wild heritage.
This is the first book in the Cozy Cat Mystery series. Given how good this book was, I hope there will be many to follow it.

When Hamish, her Maine Coon cat, sniffs out a fake twenty dollar bill, Bea is determined to find out if there are other counterfeit bills in town and if so, who's behind it. Things take a sinister turn when a young man is seen leaving a bar and walking into the woods, whereupon he disappears. Beatrice thinks the two situations are connected, and she gets the sheriff to let her help investigate. Beatrice also enlists the aid of her ex-husband and current best friend, Matthew, along with her inquisitive cats. Together, they may just crack the case, clean up the counterfeiting, and put a killer behind bars.
The story was oka-aay. As much as I love cats, I don't really see them in an investigative role, unless it involves tuna or catnip. I'm not onboard with people who take their dogs everywhere with them, let alone their cats. Also not buying into the sheriff letting Beatrice help with any investigation. And, for as much time as she and Matthew spent together, why not just up and marry him again? Whatevs.

For the first in the series, the book completely lacks a real depth or introduction to characters and an unappealing, in descriptive world building.
A cozy mystery, it’s not. Maybe more like an elementary vocabulary for a MG audience. Although I think our MG readers are more advanced and need more meat in their literary picks.
I love cats and was eager to love this book. But it just didn’t do it for me. Not sure who I would recommend this to. I think most adults would pass - it’s just implausible and unrealistic.
Two stars because it wasn’t a waste of my time - just not worthy of more of it.

This was a very short book, but it was fun. Beatrice runs a coffee shop, but is hardly there. She and her two kitties like to solve mysteries. I love the cats. They are very entertaining. I like the characters, but the story did really work for me. The revealing of the murderer happens so fast and yet, there really isn't a ton of sleuthing. Also, I felt that there were parts of the story that were missing. That's why I gave this a 3 star rating. The story was enjoyable but the mystery wasn't fully developed.

A good read. She has been single since her divorce, over 40 years ago, but her cafe and cats have filled her life up (alongside the young woman she had taken under her wing after her mother died). The small community had always been peaceful but now counterfeit money and a young man are missing. How can she, her two cats and her ex-husband help the sheriff? A nice plot with characters that you could meet anywhere.

sure. Now that I've read the first one I
can't wait to read the rest. Love the 2
cats, Hammish and Lucky! The rest of
the characters are interesting, also. Like

Wonderfully funny book, the only problem is they think they have the killer,but! Don’t care for cliffhangers. I love the comments of the pet cats Hamlisch & Lucky who were instrumental insolving the mystery. Can you imagine your pet cats being able to communicate with you. All in all would recommend this book to cozy mystery book lovers.

The was an interesting story about a cat owner who has them help her solve, supposedly small mysteries around town. Except that this time the problem is counterfeiters and murders! I only gave it a 4* because even though I like cats – the abilities they showed were way above believability but, was a cute cozy! And it wasn’t a million pages long! Cute cozy and, NOT a million pages long! Quick read!

I love cozy mysteries but this one is a little underwhelming. Too many points that make me come out of the story and think that wouldn't happen.

Fun cozy
A different kind of cozy. I liked the plot about counterfeiters. The characters being older was an interesting twist. I liked that the cats helped solve the case.

The Counterfeiter-Catching Cat, A Beatrice Yount Cozy Cat mystery, Book #1

This was a short and fun read. The series is a true cozy, taking place in a small community, with limited characters, where the main characters are seldom in any real danger. The main character is pleasant and easy to like, as are most of the supporting characters. Even the "baddies" aren't 100% bad, just local folks caught up in a bad situation. So, if you are a fan of heart-stopping danger, violence and intrigue, this might not be your cup of tea.
The involvement of the cats reminds me of other "cat" cozies, such as Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who" series, and Ali Brandon's "Black Cat Bookshop" mysteries. The cats don't actually have any preternatural powers (like the cats in the "Magical Cats" series), nor do they talk to humans (like the cats in the "Joe Grey" series), nor do they talk to each other or with other animals (like in the "Midnight Louie" series or the "Mrs. Murphy" series). These cats just seem to be adept at understanding situations and finding clues, etc. So, if you like the more fantasy style, again, this might not be your cup of tea. However, if you'd like a watered-down version of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, just with cats, then this is definitely your cup of tea .

She is well known and like around town, even by the local Sheriff, who won't admit it, but welcomes her help. In this in episode, a young man of dubious character, Jason, has gone missing. His long-time girlfriend and her mother have no idea where he is or why he would have left. People at the last spot he was seen or at his place of employment don't know of any altercations or bad business deals that would account for his disappearance. At about the same time, Beatrice's best friend/former husband, a local forest ranger, stops to pick up a coffee drink from Beatrice's cafe, something he does every day. When he pays for the drink, Hammish, Beatrice's Maine Coon, jumps up on the counter and grabs the bill out of his hand. When the bill turns out to be counterfeit, and other bogus money shows up at other retailers around town, Beatrice suddenly has two mysteries to solve. Can she find out what happened to Jason and why? Can she find out where the counterfeit money is coming from?
The plot is well done and well paced. There is sufficient backstory to allow the reader to know the main characters and care about them. The mystery is engaging. The cats are adorable. But, it still is a very light and breezy cozy, with the main characters never really being in too much danger. The editing was nice, and the proofing adequate, although I did find four instances of either missing words, or incorrect tense, or, in one case, just a kind of cheese that to my knowledge, isn't one you would "crumble" (but I didn't look that up, so maybe it is -- I've just never seen it in that form).
If you're looking for a pleasant, quick read, you'll like this read. I have one more of the books in the series on my Kindle, so I'm sure I'll read it. I'm just not sure it will become a series I will follow.

Another cat book. Another short story. This time the cat(s) aren't the narrators. A stubborn busy-body vaguely offensive woman is the main character.
Beatrice Young is sixty-two, owns a cafe called Cozy Cat Cafe, and has two cats. Who follow her everywhere. And I mean everywhere. She wants to visit a friend? Pack the cats into the car, drive over, enter friends place with her cats. I love cats but . . . that's just unreasonable. Stores, restaurants, homes - everywhere the cats follow her. Right. So. She's a busy-body and kind of bored. So solves mysteries. With her cats. The mystery in this short story involves 'the case of the counterfeit twenty dollar bills, and the missing man'. She investigates the case with the help of her cats, and her ex-husband. Meanwhile the sheriff, who has this odd idea that it's his job to investigate crimes in their town, is also investigating. Mostly directly with Beatrice. Though he's very gruff, reluctant and stuff. Apparently being the once babysitter can give you enormous power over a person. Which Beatrice has no problem slapping the sheriff with.
Despite the words I chose above, the characters weren't that annoying. The mystery wasn't half-bad, and, overall, the story was entertaining and a good way to pass the time. Vaguely annoyed that I entered the story expecting it to be from the point of view of the cats, but meh. Live and learn. The huge main coon, and the tiny black cat were entertaining.

There are a couple of things that intrigued me about this book when I chose it to read. I love cats, and I love to read about cats especially when they are basically the stars of the book. I also liked the fact that Beatrice is a older lady not a young 20 something. I really wanted to see how life experience would play a part in solving the case. By the way it did. I think that and the cat had a lot to do with me enjoying the book so much. It's hard to believe in a lot of books that a 22 year old has encountered so much in their life that can help solve cases from experience.

A very good book!
Beatrice is the owner of a popular cafe and has two cats. She loves nothing better than solving crimes. Her cats Hammish and Lucky also help her solve crimes. They have an excellent knack for sniffing out the guilty party. I really enjoyed this book and I will be reading the next one right away!!
