Too basic for an entire TPB.

I bought this in its single comic book issues, but I chosen this TPB edition to be able of making a better overall review.

This TPB edition collects “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero” #10-13, from its run made by Image Comics & Devil’s Due.

Creative Team:

Writer: Josh Blaylock

Illustrators: Kevin Sharpe, Jamal Igle & Mike S. Miller

BATTLE ANDROID TROOPER: JUDGMENT DAY

Dr. Mindbender has developed a new type of BAT (Battle Android Trooper) but it needs to be added an extra piece of hardware.

That new piece of hardware is safely handed by Zarana (Zartan’s sister) in her comeback to the Dreadnoks, and therefore to Cobra also.

Cobra Commander is quite interested in the success of the tests to the new BAT, since it costed too much money.

G.I. Joe Task Force is right behind of their tracks and thanks to the intel of an undercover agent at the Dreadnoks’ base at Chicago, Duke sends Lady Jaye commanding a strike team to deal with it.
However, an unexpected third party which hired an even more unexpected mercenary (I won’t spoil it) messed up with the BAT’s programming and now the very dangerous android is attacking everybody on sight, not matter if it’s Cobra, G.I. Joe or civilians.

So far, you may think, “well, that’s sound cool enough, why the 2 stars rating?”…

…indeed this is a fair plot, BUT

…to be developed in a single comic book issue!

Not investing a whole TPB (in this case 4 comic book issues) in such simple and basic story.

I don’t know why nowadays it seems that the creative teams are unable to make a story in a comic book title without having to use 4 or 6 issues (sometimes more!), when back in the good ol’ days of the Silver Age, you almost everytime you were getting pretty good stories in one single comic book issue.

You may want to say that nowadays the plots are deeper and more complex. Well, many times they are, I can give you that, no problem…

…but in this specific story at hand…

…trust me, that wasn’t that deeper or complex for not being able to fit it in one comic book issue.

Image/Devil's Due: G.I. Joe Volume 2 (Disavowed), Issues 10 - 15.

I've always been a big fan of the BATS, especially because even in the cartoon it was the one enemy they could completely blow up because it was a robot and not a person. The story started out great and kind of fizzled at the end, so I'd give that 3 stars, but the artwork was amazing, 5 stars. The cover art especially was fantastic.

It was still an interesting read and well worth it with some unexpected twists and turns.
