Bleach Thousand Year Blood War Cour 3 PV trailer dropped today and it looks incredible!! The music, the visuals, the designs, the colours, everything is amazing!!

Okay, now that I screamed my excitement (waiting patiently for October!), let's go to the actual review ;)

"Ichigo Kurosaki, you can't defeat me. And even if you somehow manage to, there are three Espadas above me. No matter how many times you get back up again, there can be no victory for you here."

Volume 31 surprised me with more ways than one. It's not like there are any additional scenes. Things play out exactly like in the anime, but the manga brought some of the emotions in me that I haven't quite felt while watching the anime version (I am talking mostly about Orihime, but more about it in my additional thoughts, to avoid spoilers). My first surprise was the fact that, despite having Szayelaporro on the cover, we started the volume with the Ichigo vs Ulquiorra scenes. I prepared myself for something totally different (for the Szayelaporro fight, to be exact). And since the Ichigo vs Ulquiorra fight started, it was obvious to me how it will end up.

And it was obvious to me how I will end up. In tears. It's kind of funny how, despite knowing what's gonna happen, I still couldn't properly prepare myself for the emotional impact that came with it (more about it in my additional thoughts on the end of the review.)

"What happened, Renji? You look like somebody beat you up!"

It seemed that Renji's situation is completely hopeless. He was up against the craziest Espada member, Szayelaporro Grantz, who already knew about all his abilities. How to fight a guy if you cannot even leave a scratch on him? But help always arrives in a way you will never expect it to - suddenly Ishida had shown up, and with Ishida a new hope for victory.

"There are things about me you don't know. Shall I give you the news in your own language? Se Acabó... Szayelaporro Grantz."

Did I already wrote somewhere how cool Ishida is? Because he is cool! Incredibly cool! I never truly realized it while watching the anime, but I have a tremendous amount of fun with Ishida in the manga (okay, it came out kind of wrong, but I hope you know what I mean!). I always knew that he was skilled and his fights always looked amazing, but in it looks much more impressive in the manga. Szayelaporro's expression when he realized he was tricked was priceless. Ishida's smiles in this volume are so precious to me. And, honestly, the Ishida and Renji team up is heavily underrated. I really like their dynamic and it's something that manages to keep me focused (otherwise, with Szayelaporro present, it would've been hard - I despise this guy with everything in me). Anyways, both Ishida and Renji fought spectacularly, but Szayelaporro didn't show his hand yet. He still has some tricks upon his sleeve and our heroes need to brace themselves. The worst part didn't even start yet.

We ended the volume with a new fight starting, and we know that there will be a continuation of the Renji and Ishida vs Szayelaporro fight. While I wasn't excited for Volume 31 (because of Szayelaporro), I am very much excited for the next one (because one of my favorite Bleach fights is incoming!). I will be starting it immediately!

Some of my thoughts I like to share: (beware of the spoilers)

~ "Tell me you hate me more than anything in the world." - I don't hate Szayelaporro as much as some other characters, but I do hate him and cannot wait to see him lose.
~ The fact that initially Ichigo intended to leave, not to start a fight with Ulquiorra, is worth noticing. Nothing would've happened, if Ulquiorra didn't provoke him.
~ The raw surprise on Ulquiorra's face when Ichigo transformed, was priceless.
~ Nel was my spirit animal in this volume. We both cried too much.
~ Ishida's smile when he had shown up in the middle of the Renji vs Szayelaporro fight is so precious to me.
~ Grimmjow's intervention in Orihime's room was RUTHLESS. O MY GOD. I did not expect to see such brutality!
~ It was the first time that Orihime's powers were seen as monstrous and it's understandable. Her powers are godlike and no one knows where the hell they even came from.
~ I always thought of Pesche as annoying, but he made me laugh in this volume. He is hilarious!
~ The scene of Szayelaporro eating one of his minions grossed me out. I never liked his Fracciones, but I feel deeply sorry for them. All they existed for was for Szayelaporro to eat them when he felt like it :(
~ The fact that Nel felt guilty that Ichigo died because of her and her breakdown when she realized that he's dead :(
~ Ichigo's dead eyes KILLED ME while his beautiful, bright eyes when he was brought back, brought me back to life as well. And his face when he looked at Nel? Please, instant tears 😭

Okay, now about Orihime:

I'm surprised to admit it, but I felt a deep sorrow for her in this volume. And I might a little bit change my mind about her. You see, previously I had a grudge against her, because of her behaviour in Hueco Mundo. She let herself be captured, despite knowing her friends (that they will definitely come for her). She did nothing the whole time, just standing in her room and observing a window. And she let herself be beaten up while her friends fought to get her free (and for their lives, let's be honest). But the manga version changed my feelings a little. I realized how young she is and how much had been thrown at her in such a little short of time. I don't think she had any time to properly process everything. She had been captured by the enemy after watching both of (nameless, but still) Soul Reapers get brutally murdered. She felt her friends die one by one and couldn't do anything to help. She felt ICHIGO, the boy she loved, die, and, at the same time she got ambushed by two Arrancars. She got beaten up badly by them (the sight really touched my heart, o my gosh), but still used her powers to heal them (after the Grimmjow intervention). She got captured AGAIN (by Grimmjow) and forced to do heal Ichigo while knowing that he can die again (in the fight against Grimmjow). It would've been to much for everyone, really. I know that she will piss me off again, but, for now, she and I are cool.

This was such a good volume. We got to see a team up between Uryu and Renji, but they still need a way to stop that Espada. Orihime’s abilities are incredible and terrifying every time I see her use them.

For a second there I thought Grimmjow was switching sides, but he just wanted Ichigo healed so they could have a fair fight. I have a feeling it’s gonna be an amazing one too. They’ve also got a few hours until Ulquiorra comes back so let’s see where this goes in the next volume.

This was a bit better than last volume if it feels too similar too. What helped was Ichigo feeling hopeless in this world, grimjaw returning, and Quincy and Renji teaming up. All of that worked for me. Sure the story beats are really similar to the Soul Society arc so no huge surprises but least the pacing is quick.

This volume was as full of fight sequences as any other volume yet and it was a bit disappointing in the optics that it's finally feeling like it's all being overstretched. Then again, these fight sequences are probably more than necessary for the anime...

The ending was also a bit unusual, even if we've been sold to Grimmjow's arrogance and honour. It almost felt like "boys will be boys" kind of situation instead of an epic and long-awaited battle being prepared to happen.

At least mangaka Tite Kubo knows how to draw his fights and have readers flipping through these volumes at an insane speed.

Bleach, Vol. 31 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (270–278) of the on-going manga series.

A furious Ichigo Kurosaki uses his Bankai in addition to his Hollow powers, but is unable to defeat Ulquiorra Cifer. However, Ichigo refuses to give up, believing Ulquiorra to be the top-ranked Espada and that his defeat would end this war. However, Ulquiorra explains he is actually Espada Four and stabs Ichigo in the chest while telling him his only choices are to either escape from Hueco Mundo or die.

Meanwhile, Orihime Inoue is confronted by Loly Aivirrne and Menoly Mallia – two female arrancars decide to deal with the girl for winning Sōsuke Aizen's favor. However, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez defeats the two female arrancars and takes Orihime with him after she heals the girls to Loly's disdain.

In Renji Abarai's fight with Szayel Aporro Grantz, Uryū Ishida arrives to aid him. Despite joining forces to maneuvers him into a trap, Renji and Uryū find that Szayel Aporro survived as he eats one of his Fracciones to completely heal himself. Szayel Aporro then leaves to replace his damaged clothing while giving Renji and Uryū time to formulate a new plan.

Elsewhere, Grimmjow brings Orihime to Ichigo, and asks Orihime to heal Ichigo so he can fight him again. Ulquiorra intervenes, but Grimmjow isolates him in another dimension.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The incursion into Hueco Mundo continues as the invasion group heads deeper into enemy territory. It continues the battle with the Arrancars and their Espada leaders. We finally get a glimpse of Orihime Inoue's captivity and is finally brought to Ichigo Kurosaki to heal him after his fight with Ulquiorra Cifer, but Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez no less.

All in all, Bleach, Vol. 31 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

How people can prefer ulquorria to Grimjow is beyond me. Grimjow literally finds a near mortally wounded Ichigo and heals him back to full health just so he can run the fade with him. One of the coldest moves I've ever seen. Also the infamous reveal of Ulqorria being no 4 was in this volume, getting into the good stuff now.

Ulquiorra vs. Grimmjow! I love interpersonal politics and the Arrancars’ positioning under Aizen and their infighting is just great.

What a bizarre cover. Not only do we have a pink-haired man in all white in the throes of ecstasy, there’s this purple thing coming out of his waste band. You can imagine what I thought it was originally. Second glance it looks like a bowel loop and that isn’t any better….

Ichigo fights Uliquorra who tells him Rukia is dead. This battle doesn’t go so well. Orihime is being tormented in her cell but Grimjowl puts an end to that since he wants her to heal Ichigo so he can kill him himself. In the meantime Renji and Uryu are fighting the pink-haired freak on the cover. At least they’re faring slightly better. Bleach is Bleach, one long continuous, often not even that interesting, fight scene. This is strictly library, I’m not paying for it, fare.

This volume featured some of my favourite moments from the Hueco Mundo arc. It was terrifying seeing Loly and Menoly beat Orihime up when she’s so defenceless. I loved seeing Grimmjow come to her rescue and then insist it wasn’t out of the kindness of his heart, rather him owing her a favour. I loved seeing how despite Loly and Menoly beating her up, Orihime still chose to heal them first after Grimmjow left them for dead, and I loved how this aspect of Orihime’s character perplexed Loly as she can’t even fathom that kind of selflessness. The beginning of the fight with Szayelaporro has filled with awesome moments. I loved Renji and Uryū working together, seeing Renji trap Szayelaporro in order to perform a kamikaze attack with kidō was cool, and I loved how Uryū uses his swords to make a giant explosion. Szayelaporro cannibalizing his own Fracción was brutal and I loved how it had a more gnarly depiction here than it did in the anime. I liked the entire sequence with Ulquiorra punching a hole in Ichigo’s chest in the same spot as his own Hollow hole, and I liked seeing Grimmjow force Orihime to heal Ichigo just so he could fight him and kill him at his full strength. Seeing Grimmjow and Ulquiorra briefly tussle before Grimmjow locks him in a pocket dimension is also an interesting small scene. I liked the ending and the lead up to the fight between Ichigo and Grimmjow, which is a highlight of the entire series.

Nowww this is the real good stuff!Szayelapporo, Grimmjow, Ulquiorra, and the surprisingly good Kaien/Aaroniero all moving at once.

The Kaien duel is a highlight for Rukia’s character. It serves as a Rukia flashback and reminds us that she has hundreds of years of Soul Reaper’ing under her belt. With that comes some loss, some grieving. Aaroniero exploits that and it makes for an awesome fight with the emotional undertones firing on full cylinder.

Szayelapporo is just fun. If he wasn’t cast around the same time as Grimmjow and Ulquiorra, he’d shine as a fan-favorite imo. He’s pretty much an Arrancar reflection of Mayuri. Who doesn’t want more Mayuri? Who doesn’t want a chaotic evil Mayuri (even though he’s already teeter-tottering on the line)? Renji doesn’t win (big surprise) but he’s not a total jobber here (bigger surprise) and that’s a W for this team-up with Uryu.

Orihime’s plotline is great too. Hueco Mundo is dark. Something about watching Orihime get abused changes the entire tone of the manga. Grimmjow and Ulquiorra both fight to be top dog at the dog pound and they simply don’t have a bad moment. Both drip with aura. Arrancars are the Akatsuki of Bleach. Gosh I love those two 😭💚💙

Another decent volume, the fight happens this time between Renji and Granz and we see how a mad scientist he is and then Uryuu comes to rescue him and their fight is on a whole other level and wow its lethal. Meanwhile Ichigo vs Grimjow is happening and we see how the latter wants an equal battle thus getting Orihime to restore Ichigo and thats something but they have Ulquiola to deal with and its something. The stakes are getting higher.

Sooo much closer to my favorite fight in this arc. I love almost everyone!

I feel bad for Uryu and Renji. They are literally up against a wacko. He even ate one of his subordinates to heal himself. Uryu was able to injure Szayelaporro with his weapon. Renji was having a rough time before Uryu showed up. Then again Renji wasn't able to use his bankai. His zanpakuto is strong in just shikai form. He's incredible in bankai form. Szayelaporro is one of my least favorite villains in this arc.

Ichigo came face to face with Ulquiorra again. Ulquiorra tried to tell him that Rukia was dead. That was a mistake on Ulquiorra's part. Ichigo used his mask to attack. Ulquiorra stopped the getsuga tensho with two hands. He was also surprised Ichigo was like an Espada. Ichigo also finds out that Ulquiorra is also the fourth Espada. He thought he was the leader. There are three Espadas above him. Ulquiorra almost kills Ichigo. Grimmjow grabs Orihime after she's being attacked. So she can heal Ichigo. I felt bad for Ichigo since he almost died again. (He did die in volume like 7.)

This volume is a lot of fun. Pity on those girls who tried to hurt Orihime also.

Given that Manga, and especially Shonen is split up into bigger arcs as composed to volumes I will be analyzing and reviewing this by Arc. I also reread this manga over the span of 2 months, some days reading as much as 100 chapters a day. It would be quite tedious for me to review each 7-8 chapter volume. So this will be copy and pasted throughout all of the 72 manga volumes. That being said, if you're looking at this without having viewed the series...spoiler warning. I don't recap anything, but I also mention things that happen. If you want me to answer the question "Should I pick this up?" Yes. Even if you stop at the end of the Soul Society Arc. It's worth it.

Karakura Town Arc - Chapters 1-56 - Rating: 7/10
(The official page lumps this in with the Soul Society Arc however I feel as if they are two very separate arcs with two very separate themes)
- A fun introduction.
-An interesting premise on the idea of ghosts and demons (Hollows)
-Does a good job of introducing the characters and I especially enjoyed the love for characters like Chad, Orihime and Uryu as these characters would later lose more and more spotlight as the series went on.
-It is a bit of a monster of the week. When it works, like with Chad's introduction story. It works. But Characters like Don Kanonji felt superficial and very gimmicky. Which, fair. I didn't enjoy them as much.

Soul Society Arc - Chapters 57-182 - Rating: 10/10
-The height of Bleach
-Establishes an afterlife seemingly perfectly. Later on revealed to be full of plot holes and never fleshed out but hey! That's not an issue in THIS arc. The fights are top tier, the themes of Ichigo owing a life debt to Rukia and his passion and determination to rise above literally God's army is inspiring and to this day is why I love Ichigo so much. He doesn't have some grandiose plan. He doesn't have a major goal to accomplish. He is a protector by heart, losing his mother has made him sour to failing to protect those he cares about and he'll do anything in his power never to feel that helpless again. Very powerful stuff.
-The twist near the end of this arc is revolutionary and would make waves for the next 200 chapters onward. A perfect ending and set up for the forthcoming arc.
-The only issues I have for this arc would be Ichigo's lightning speed progression. The guy goes from being able to barely defeat a third seat to besting multiple captains in roughly 100 or less chapters. I get that that is the point and him defeating captains was more of a struck of luck, but progression and pacing wise it feels very unearned and a factor of "for the plot he needed to be this strong" It only seems as fast as it is because Ichigo's progression slows drastically down for the rest of the story moving foreword so it's only now that I make that criticism.
-Also, and this will be an issue in most Shonen. There are 13 Captains with 13 Vice Captains and seats that branch all the way to 10 I believe? Regardless, there's a fudge ton of characters that are introduced here and it can get a little jarring at times. Luckily, Kubo does a great job at making their designs and characters unique despite such a large cast.

Hueco Mundo Arc - Chapters 183-423 - Rating 7/10
-This is another arc where personally I would split it up into two separate arcs. But for the sake of this review I will simply refer to the first half of the arc and the later half of the arc. First Half 9/10. Second Half. 5/10.
-The first half of this arc is a great continuation of the last. Ichigo now struggles with his inner demons and it affects his ability to protect the ones he loves. We are also introduced to a deadly unknown new villains. The Arrancars/Espada to this day remain one of my favorite villain factions in all of manga enemies.
-Just so you're aware I would say the first half of this arc ends right around the point of Ichigo vs Grimmjow. Grimmjow is one of the first Arrancar that Ichigo faces. And he's also one of two Espada that he faces three times. The conclusion of that fight shows Ichigo conquering his inner demons. Where Grimmjow is very much fighting to establish himself. Grimmjow has to fight Ichigo to prove to his fallen comrades that he is as good as he says he is. He doesn't care about Aizen, he doesn't care about the rest of the Espada. It is very personal for him. For Ichigo, Orohime is within his grasp of saving and he views this as his "final" battle. It's my favorite fight in all of Bleach.
-However, this is where things start to take a bit of dip in quality in my opinion. We had a goal and we were striving towards that goal. Each character of the original cast coming to repay the debt they made to their friend who had risked her life to save them in the Soul society arc. But somewhere along the way it seems we just had a fighter fest. Captains would face enemies with no themes or character revelations. The Espadas got a little light but nothing that made their fights compelling. You almost just feel bad for the Espada as they were monsters turned into a military force by an unstoppable tyrant. But even that wasn't enough to make half of the fights interesting. Now, that's with knowing the outcome. These fights played little importance in the larger scheme of things. Where at least in the Hueco Mundo fights each match up had the protagonists striving for a goal. Rukia to defeat Aaroneiro to free her former superiors soul. Byakuya to defend Rukia. Renji and Uryu teamwork. Nel to protect Ichigo and get revenge on Nnoitra. Whereas Stark fought Kyoraku.....cause.....and Hitsugaya fought Halibel because Water vs Ice would be cool.
-This leaves me to the end. I won't say it wasn't satisfying that Ichigo was able to defeat Aizen. And yes, I do feel like his new power was earned. 3 months of training. But this was clearly a last minute decision to save Aizen for a later date and the show must go on. I do feel like it wasn't as satisfying as 200+ chapter buildup needed to be.

The Fullbring Arc - Chapters 424-479 - Rating: 8/10
-A very underrated arc. And yes, I acknowledge that rating wise I think the Fullbring arc is superior to the Hueco Mundo arc. That is mostly true. Though I like the first half of the Hueco Mundo Arc more than the Fullbring arc. The end of the HM arc really brought it down for me. The Fullbring Arc is much more concise and is actually the shortest arc in the series and works as a glorified Ichigo getting his powers back arc. But that doesn't mean its bad.
-When I read it originally back when it was coming out in 2010. (Cause I'm Old) It wasn't phenomenal. In fact, I hated it. But wouldn't you? It took just short of a year to get to the point that we were at. But upon rereading it, it gave much deserved love to the characters who hadn't been shown love in quite some time. The original cast. It was a very character focused arc. Ichigo never seemed more human. And despite me hating it before for taking so long, reading weekly can sometimes hurt these mystery based arcs. The twist is heavily foreshadowed and I really appreciated it.
-That being said, the end was super rushed. This was a big bummer for me. The villains this time around were humans. And the ones who had the most exposure and relations with these characters were the original cast who again....were humans. So to have the soul reapers, who have no connection to the fullbringers show up and basically no diff most of the fullbringers felt very forced and fanservicey to me. This very well could have not been Kubo's call. As the community was very vocal about their dislike for this arc as it was going on. But I appreciate it now much more as I appreciate character and story over big sword fights. Lol.

The Thousand Year Blood War Arc - Chapters 424-689 - Rating: 5/10
-And we're finally here. The final and largest arc within the Bleach story. And man...does it not stick the landing.
-That being said, this arc has phenomenal moments. Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai. Ichigo's double swords. Renji's true Bankai. Rukia's Bankai. And many more. However, they are put together against the most break neck speed arc that I have ever read. Kubo was very ambitious when he introduced 26 new villains. However, most of them got barely any screen time and a lot of them even got off screened by higher level captains. This was unlike the Espada who each got a full double page spread for their Resurrections.
-Yhwach himself was a phenomenal villain but was dealt with swiftly and imo dirty. They did him dirty.
-There was just something off. The mood changed and it was very apparent. The villains had random powers instead of the powers reflecting their personalities or needs. The finale felt so underwhelming.
-Ichigo gets to be the strongest he's ever been....but he doesn't defeat a single person besides the main villain despite being in several fights.
-It isn't a good arc. In fact, I would say it's the worst. Hopefully the anime does a better job with this already mammoth of a story. 260 chapters is no joke.

This gives the story of Bleach an Overall rating of 7.4/10. Which to me is above average. It has it's ups and downs. It's not perfect. But when it's high, it's peak shonen. But when it's low, it's very forgettable.

Ichigo comes face to face with Ulquiorra, who informs him that Rukia is dead. And so is the Espada she was fighting. Ichigo doesn’t believe him, insisting he will save her. When Ulquiorra asks why Ichigo doesn’t attack him, he says it’s because Ulquiorra hasn’t hurt any of his friends. That quickly changes when Ulquiorra replies,” What if I told you that I brought Orihime Inoue to Hueco Mundo?” And the battle is on…

Meanwhile, Orihime is alone in her room, her solitude disturbed by two young Arrancar girls, one of whom is determined to torture her. But their fun is quickly disrupted by Grimmjow, who sets the torturer straight, despite her threats to tell Aizen what he did to her. But Grimmjow has his reasons for his actions, which he reveals to Orihime.

Renji is still battling Szayelaporro, who has a rather disturbing way of replenishing his health. Renji is at the end of his strength when help arrives from an unexpected source. Grimmjow has taken Orihime with him, for his own purposes, despite the intervention of Ulquiorra. Grimmjow is determined to use Orihime’s healing ability to fully heal the opponent he intends to fight. Orihime doesn’t wish to obey, until she is presented with a good reason to do so.

Another battle-centric volume of Bleach. I imagine that’s what we’ll be getting for a while as Ichigo and his friends make their way to Aizen’s inner sanctum. I’m sure he’s anticipated all this in advance and is waiting for them with plans of his own.

I love the banter between Renji and Dondochakka, and Uryu and Pesche. Not to mention Nel and Ichigo. At the same time, they are more than mere comic relief. If we know nothing else about Ichigo, it is that he will not give up, no matter what the odds, in order to save the people he cares about. Never say never is his motto.

More battles ahead, looking forward to the next volume!

I liked the ending and the lead up to the fight between Ichigo and Grimmjow, which is a highlight of the entire series.

jeeezus. I don't know if I'll continue. I kinda want to, but really don't. When does this get better?

This volume if full of battles. A lot of explosive fighting. Unlikely things happen. But then some easy solutions arrive. But then problems come up again. It's a cycle really.

I don't know why...but the abuse that Orihime gets in this volume just...bothered me. I was not at peace the way she was beat up...and I don't want to say other battles didn't have women being beat up, but it just felt...wrong. Anyways, Ichigo and the gang continue their rescue attempts. This volume had a lot in it, but really it was simply a slow progression of the team moving closer to their goal, which is the rescue of their beloved friend Orihime. Beautifully rendered as usual by Tite Kubo.

This was a pretty good one.

Summary:
Ichego was defeated in battle by Ulquiorra, the Number 4 espada. Orihime is getting beat up by 2 arrancars and grimmjow stops them. Renji is getting beat up by Espada 8 and Uryu shows up to help him fight. Uryu defeats espada 8, then espada 8 starts eating hollows and recovers. Grimmjow brings Orihime to heal Ichego and Grimmjow is confronted by Ulquiorra. Grimmjow beats him by using a special power that traps an arrancar in another demetion.

Kubo's art continues to shine but again, I feel like this needs to have conversation and actual character exchanges to give it that feeling because all these fights, while super cool, make this feel very bloated. Like damn, I need a breather. I want to see these characters have meaningful conversations again. Plus, it feels a bit repetitive. I feel like now that I think about it, Bleach is just one big fight manga with everyone trying to one up each other. 3.5
